The Week Ahead in Hip-Hop: April 11, 2016 – April 17, 2016

As the saying goes, “You don’t know where you’re going until you know where you’ve been.”  Here is a look at notable events that took place in Hip-Hop culture this week from years past.

The Meek Shall Inherit Her Work: The Mis-Classification of Ms. Lauryn Hill

Intro:

The times have changed and the era of raw artistry seems to be slowly shifting to one of pre-packaged professionals.  It begs the question:  Where does Ms. Lauryn Hill fit in?

To some, Ms. Lauryn Hill is a living legend— a Hip-Hop fairy god martyr.  To others, she seems a few tics shy of a “bag lady”.  Those who got a chance to watch her in her element at the Black Girls Rock! Awards (a show created to uplift Black Women who may be otherwise overlooked) were either left inspired… or confused.

Verse 1:  The Pursuit of Perfection

lauryn hill

In today’s world of:  click tracks, live Auto-Tune, pre-recorded performances, glamour armies, choreographed “freestyle” dances, and corporate sponsored colonics, most of us aren’t used to seeing imperfection on stage anymore.  Today’s concertgoer and live-viewer sort of just wants to sing along, take pictures, and post it all to social media in real-time; in an effort to be acknowledged by both artist and fans alike.  In some way, pledging your allegiance to a flawless demigod is a reflection of your life and social status.  The deepest connection to an artist, short of stalking, is that of the elusive “retweet” or “mention”; not so much spiritual growth or even an autograph.    So, aside from the committee-approved (pre-rehearsed) vocal run, everything must remain as polished as humanly digitally possible.

For someone of Ms. Hill’s musical caliber and apparent devotion to the African Diaspora, perfection may look and feel all together different.  While some artists fume and vex over red carpet time, she may very well be more concerned with how to achieve a transcendent performance.  Who knows?  What we do know is that the prospect of playing the same song… the same way… for 20 years must seem like Analog Purgatory.  This would mean that, given a capable band (which she has), the freedom to experiment with your music is both tempting and overwhelming.  “Should I mix in a Trap beat to make it modern?  Should I switch to Fela to honor my roots?  Should I break it down here or… here?!”

For most artists, the thrill of sharing something unpolished and creatively raw is usually reserved for management and algorithmic industry robots.  Not to mention that the symbiotic relationship between an artist, an audience, and social media has changed the performance experience to say the least.  The performer pours their heart out before a sea of blue-lit faces bowed before smart phones, the audience yearns for a “post-able” moment, and both parties pray silently for “likes” and followers.  The pressure of knowing that everything you do, whether good or bad, will be etched in digital stone can cause even the most seasoned performer to go out of their way to eliminate all chances of failure and self-consciousness… or just not show up at all.

Verse 2:  The Gods Must Be Crazy
 lauryn hill ex-factor video youtube
Let’s be honest, every artist is a little weird.  Okay… really weird depending on your definition of weird.  Some will only write a song if they can get a particular candle, a particular pen, and be in a particular studio surrounded by white orchids.  Some may not even touch a stage unless they’ve eaten 23 green M&Ms, while facing east and brushing their beard counter-clockwise.  For a chosen few, these superstitions and eccentricities (as well as the occasional arrest, overdose, or seizure) can be seen as formulas for success.  For the rest, it’s the reason why Thanksgiving is always so tense.

Ms. Hill, at this point, has seemed to have lost her right to eccentricity.  Whether it be:  the fact she’s been classified as crazy, the stigma that mental health issues carry in the Black Community, the fact that the industry at-large has declared her difficult, or just a simple case of biased third-party anecdote disguised as fact, she is an easy target for criticism.  To those who revere her, Ms. Hill is a god incarnate who can do no wrong.  To the “Mean Girls of Twitter” however, she’s a fatted calf ready for virtual sacrifice.   “Is she crazy?  Why she wear that?  What the f*ck is a Fela?  Why does she keep pointing at the speakers and looking off stage?  Why they just didn’t get Rihanna to sing?”

Gossip folks will always find something to say.  We know that, for the most part, it’s because online negativity garners the attention that these soul-less cyberbullying ringworms so desperately desire.  Every good parasite needs a host.  Be that as it may, what concerns even the most casual music aficionado, is that the criticism have less to do with an artist’s music, and more so to do with the artist’s image.  And one must wonder just how the legends of yesteryear would fair out in today’s marketplace of corporate artists?  Would Jimi Hendrix have a shot?  Would Miles Davis or Janis Joplin get a deal?  Sh*t… what would happen to Miss Nina Simone?

There are thousands of examples of music, film, visual, and even literary artists becoming more detached from societal expectations the deeper they delve into their craft.  We tolerate odd behavior from winners, so long as they are winning.  So who gets to draw the “crazy line” in the sand?  You?  The industry?  Lifetime movies?

Verse 3:  Painting By Numbers
lauryn hill for da ladies vid BIG KAP
While we all can appreciate the well-oiled performance machines that we’ve grown accustomed to, thanks to the savvy industry shamans, true Art is about expression.  It is about going into oneself and making the abstract elements of our existence make sense in a tangible (or downloadable) form.  It is more about astrological charts than it is sales charts— or at least that’s what an artist would say.

The average consumer judges the quality of an album by its first week sales.  One week.  Television shows are gauged on an episodic basis.  No one watches… it’s gone.  Is it a bad album/show or a bad marketing department?  You’ll never get a chance to know.  On to the next one.

When the fans are more concerned with sales and branding, there is less incentive for an artist to rock the boat in an effort to reach for artistic legacy and integrity.  The S.S. Formulaic is a big, slow-turning ship and the shareholders can’t afford for you to try out that didgeridoo solo.

How will this analytical approach to art play out in the long run?  Will there be less Ms. Lauryn Hills in favor of puppy-mill clone army girl groups?  Probably.  The analytics have spoken and “The GoldenDoodles” are going on a Snapchat tour with “E####### Connection” this summer.

Outro.

Ms. Hill’s Black Girls Rock! Awards performance seemed to be met with both reverence and ridicule.  She tried things.  She reached, pulled back, and reached some more.  She did and then re-did.

For those who appreciated her effort, they were granted a glimpse at one artist’s attempt at her idea of perfection.   For those that didn’t appreciate her effort, they were granted a glimpse at a waste of good airtime.

The bifurcation of opinions towards Ms. Lauryn Hill may be indicative of a larger issue with Black culture, but we can let Don Lemon and Talib Kweli debate that.  What we must decide is what we individually think of someone like Ms. Hill.

Is she an eccentric diva?  Is she crazy and in need of meds?  Or is she an artist still struggling to find herself in the public eye?

Whatever your opinion is of Ms. Hill there is no denying her work and impact on countless artists (including the writer) and music fans alike.  The torch she carried will and must be taken up for the sake of Art and Hip Hop culture.  It’s doubtful, however, that the next little girl to inherit her work will be like the corporate clones we’ve grown to love.  No, she will be meek, introspective, and laden with the burden of African roots—past, present, and future.  She may write of this legacy in a simple notebook and carry it all in possibly a cloth bag of sorts.  Yes… a bag lady.

Rap and Responsibility: Great Examples of Hip-Hop Dads

It has been observed that some people of the Hip-Hop generation could use and/or be more responsible father figures. However, that’s not to say that there aren’t many men in that demographic who take the task of parenting very seriously. They are not only setting a positive example for their children to follow, but also breaking the cycle of absentee dads that have affected many families and communities.

AllHipHop.com has put together an alphabetical list of some Hip-Hop pops who are doing right by their kids and have recently been recognized for it in one way or another. In other words, as Chris Rock once put it, “I’m not talking about the guy that just f*ed you [the mother] and left. Fk him. I’m talking about the real daddies.”

Los Angeles Brewery Honors Phife Dawg With Special New Brew

Phife Dawg Has A New Brew Out

(AllHipHop News) Yesterday the LA Times revealed that the late Phife Dawg is being honored by a Los Angeles based beer company with a memorial beer called “Buggin’ Out.”

The libation is made by Mumford Brewing Co. in downtown L.A. and was released as a toast to the life of Malik Isaac Taylor aka the 5-foot assassin.

But there’s more to it than just a name.

The beer has an alcohol percent by volume of 5.3%, a nod to Phife Dawg’s actual 5’3” height.

The “Buggin’ Out” beer is an India Pale Ale chosen after the popular Northeast IPA’s found frequently on the East Coast.

“We’re a very musical family,” co-founder Peter Mumford told the LA Times. “We bring that love of music into the brewery. All of our tanks are named after musicians.”

Ironically, the “Buggin’ Out” beer wasn’t supposed to be a memorial tribute, but as the brewing was being finalized Phife Dawg passed away.

According to the LA Times the brew, “has some tropical and grassy top notes, then finishes dry with a lingering impression of bergamot and jasmine tea. ”

This week friends, family and fans attended a tributary celebration of Phife Dawg’s life at the Apollo Theatre.

A Tribe Called Quest, Kanye West, D’Angelo, André 3000, the Roots, Busta Rhymes, Chuck D, KRS-One, Consequence, and several others all contributed to the celebration.

Phife Dawg also dropped a new video this week called “Nutshell” featuring production from the late-J Dilla.

EXCLUSIVE UPDATE: Afrika Bambaataa Attorney Releases Statement Regarding Alleged Sexual Assault Of Teenager

(AllHipHop News) Today (April 8) Afrika Bambaataa’s attorney released a statement on behalf of the iconic rapper in regards to recent accusations that he assaulted a teen in the 1970’s.

Earlier this week, a former New York politician, Ronald Savage, recalled the charges in an interview with radio personality Star on Shot97.com.

Bambaataa’s attorney told AllHipHop.com the following in an exclusive statement:

Recently, defamatory statements were published seeking to harm my client’s reputation so as to lower him in the estimation of the community while deterring others from associating or dealing with him. The statements show a reckless disregard for the truth, were published with knowledge of their falsity, and are being made by a lesser-known person seeking publicity. Valuable cultural resources, such as Afrika Bambaataa’s good name and time, should never be used to assist a mediocre person’s asinine quest for social media popularity and superficial gain. – Attorney Vivian K. Tozaki

The statement comes on the heals of a third man coming forward to make sexual assault claims. The unidentified man says that the assaults happened when he was 12 years old.

Ronald Savage made similar claims of oral sex in his 2014 book, “Impulse, Urges and Fantasy’s.”

He claimed that Afrika Bambaataa molested him between the ages of 12-14 in the late 1970’s.

The book claims to be a “true Hip-Hop story,” and is told through the eyes of a fictional character named “Bee-Stinger” of The Zulu Nation.

Savage, who is now in his 50’s, served as a New York State Democratic Committee for six years.

More news as details emerge.

Is Lack Of Support The Reason Why N.W.A Isn’t Performing At Their Rock & Rock Hall Of Fame Induction?

Although N.W.A will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame today, unlike many inductees, the group will not be performing as part of the ceremony. Ice Cube revealed that N.W.A would not perform in an interview with The New York Times.

“Nah, we’re not performing. I guess we really didn’t feel like we were supported enough to do the best show we could put on,” said Ice Cube

When Ice Cube was asked if the lack of support came from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame organizers, he replied saying,

“Pretty much, yeah. We wanted to do it on a whole other level, and that just couldn’t happen. But we’re totally honored, humbled and appreciative to the Hall for even just considering us, inducting us and inviting us.”

Man, wouldn’t it have been nice to see them perform!

DMX Isn’t Looking Or Sounding Too Good!

DMX recently stopped by the Drink Champs podcast to share a pretty legendary story with hosts N.O.R.E and DJ EFN about the time Diddy offered him a record deal after initially turning him down. X recalled auditioning for Diddy before getting signed to Def Jam, and while the audition didn’t lead to a deal, DMX said that he respects Diddy for telling him to his face what he didn’t like about his rap skills. Weeks later, Diddy decided to offer DMX a bigger and better deal when he found out he was signing to Def Jam, but X wouldn’t budge because he felt like he couldn’t sign with Puff if he couldn’t see his talent from the beginning. While this is a great anecdote, we are more concerned with X’s appearance and the sound of his voice. We hope it’s not drugs. We just want to see DMX win again!

Cuba Gooding Jr. May Be Trolling Us Into Thinking He’s A Young Thug Stan

Either Cuba Gooding Jr. is an extreme Young Thug fan, or he has taken trolling to a new level. Fans weren’t too kind to Young Thug on one of his recent Instagram posts as they criticized his music. Cuba quickly came to Thug’s defense saying,

“This is better than literally anything The Beatles ever put out. Fam, I swear you finna make me catch a body. First off Thugga is an amazing rapper on a technical level, as well as being a great lyricist and stone cold G.”

It looks like Gooding may be on more than alcohol from the looks of this rant and that video of him partying and putting a whole cell phone in his mouth in a nightclub. He openly admitted that his role as OJ Simpson in the FX American Crime series also took a toll on him. Let’s hope he’s trolling! The ‘Cuba Thugger Jr.’ tape is coming soon!

Police Arrest Fat Trel On DWI, Narcotics Charges

(AllHipHop News) Details are emerging from Washington D.C.’s WJLA that MMG rapper Fat Trel has been arrested again.

Arlington County Police say Fat Trel was arrested overnight in the area of I-395 North and S. Joyce Street,

A Conversation With Ray J About WE tv’s ‘Driven To Love’, New Music, Vince Staples & Scoot-E Bikes

(AllHipHop Features) Ray J may very well be the reigning king of reality television. The 35-year-old entertainer has starred on Brandy and Ray J: A Family Business, Bad Girls All-Star Battle, and Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood. However, it was the two seasons of the relationship show For The Love Of Ray J that first established the singer-actor as an undisputed champion of unscripted programs.

Fast forward to 2016, Ray has found his soul mate in fellow LHHH star Princess Love, so he no longer needs to search for a better half on the small screen. Instead, Ray J is helping other people potentially find a romantic partner through the new WE tv series Driven To Love.

The hour-long program is a blend of the TV classic The Dating Game and the long-running game show Cash Cab. On Driven To Love, single daters get to question five prospects as they ride in an SUV driven by Ray J. Pick ups that fail to impress get kicked to the curb. The vehicular speed dating format features Ray serving as both host and adviser.

AllHipHop.com’s Yohance Kyles spoke with Ray J about Driven To Love. The Mississippi born, California raised showbiz veteran also discusses his latest music releases, his upcoming projects, his perceived legacy, and more in this exclusive interview.

[ALSO READ: EXCLUSIVE: A Conversation With Jurnee Smollett-Bell About Her New TV Series ‘Underground’]

What first attracted you to want to do Driven To Love?

I’ve been on a couple of dating shows before, so I’ve been down the dating show road. To come back to be an executive producer and create this new twist on dating, I thought it would just be hella fun. Being engaged now and having a new perspective on life, I thought it would be really cool. The whole time I was playing wingman and hooking people up. I was having a lot of fun, and I was taking it seriously making sure they connected.

You definitely come off as more than just a traditional game show host.

I got a lot of jokes. I say what everybody’s thinking. It’s a pretty good dynamic.

You’re very interactive with the people on the show. Was that concept presented to you or did you develop your own role for the series?

They just told me to be Ray J. I know how to do this reality thing. I think me connecting with a regular person is funny. Us having those conversations and trying to figure it out together is a good time. I knew I would connect, because I’m good with people.

One of the segments that stood out for me was “Phone Check.”

Yeah, the “Phone Check” is always the best one.

I think the concept of letting someone you’re dating look into your phone is kind of scary for a lot of people, but I’m sure that led to some really interesting TV moments.

It definitely gets critical and intense.

Did you ever have anyone say, “I don’t think I want to do that.”

A lot of people wanted to get out of the car. I had to convince them to go along with it. In a lot of the scenes you don’t see, I was like, “Nah man, don’t get out the car. Trust me. You know I got you too. Give me that phone.”

You mentioned before about your experience on reality TV. You have the Love & Hip Hop franchise in California, and you’re doing Driven To Love in New York. How were you able to balance doing both shows?

It’s not that hard. I have another show I’m shooting on BET called Music Moguls with Snoop Dogg, Jermaine Dupri, Birdman, and Dame Dash. I got another show on Reelz that I produce called Hollywood Hillbillies. We’re on our 4th season. Then I got another show I’m working on now on the Food Network. And I’m doing a show with my sister [Brandy] on Fox.

This is what I do. I’ve created a brand around reality TV from day 1 when it first started. From there, I’ve capitalized off creating great relationships. My production company – we’re nonstop. I feel good. I like having multiple things going on, and I have a strong team that makes sure we juggle it all the right way.

When can we expect the Music Moguls show?

Music Moguls will be out in June. Hopefully, the show will come on right after the BET Awards.

When your song “Caddi (Real Life Playa)” first came out, it was reported that it was a response to Kanye West. Was that actually your intention?

I dropped it on my own social media the right way. You can listen to it. It’s really not like that. It’s just a smooth song talking about how I’ve been a player before, but now I’m changing my life. The girl that I’m with, she’s the one.

That seems to be a theme that you’re going with now. Even with “Curtains Closed,” it feels like you’re saying, “I’m closing the door to the old Ray, and I’m entering a new life with my fiancée.”

Yeah, that’s what I’m focused on right now. It’s about that time for me to grow up, do bigger things, build bigger brands, and be a one-woman man. That’s where I’m at.

With you releasing all these singles, is there a plan to do a full album soon?

Maybe. I don’t know. I’ve always been independent, so when I feel like the world wants a Ray J album I’ll give it to them. But until then, I’m gonna keep jabbing them with singles and finding my way musically.

The industry has been shifting the last few years. It almost feels like the concept of an album is fading out. With streaming, it seems to be a major move happening. How has that affected you as a music artist and where do you see the industry going as far as the way music is presented to the public?

I really haven’t thought about it. I love music, but that’s like the last thing on the schedule for our business. It’s something that I love to do from the heart. That’s why I put out songs, because they’re songs from the heart that I care about. Other than that, that’s not a way that we get it financially. We make okay money, and it’s cool. But it’s nothing like what we do in television and this new venture that we’re working on.

I don’t know if you saw this, but last year Vince Staples did an interview where he was talking about you. Vince said he felt like you were one of the greatest West Coast artists of all time. He went on to say almost everything that’s happening in black culture right now, you’ve had a hand in. Did you see that?

Yeah, I laughed at that. He was keeping it real though. I appreciate that. I don’t like to boast about what I do, but he knows what’s going on. A lot of people on the West Coast know, because they know my real life and the real business side of it. Everybody else around the globe and in the other states don’t really know the situations that go on on the day-to-day business side out here on the West Coast. I respect that from him and much love to him.

Speaking of your business work, I wanted to ask you about these Scoot-E bikes you’re endorsing. Can you talk about the product and what led you to want to join forces with that brand?

I think it’s cool. I’m a brand ambassador for it with Snoop Dogg, Chris Brown, and Diddy. We’re having a whole lot of fun. This thing is starting to catch a new wave. Yesterday I was with Snoop. I was texting Wiz [Khalifa] and French Montana. Everybody’s getting into these Scoot-E bikes. I think it’s perfect for the summer. We’re even centering it around Christmas time too. It’s going to be a real good time.

Knowing how you love to incorporate your different brands, could we possibly see a “Ridden To Love” spin-off featuring Scoot-E bikes?

I’m not mad at that. [laughs]

EXCLUSIVE: Cipha Sounds Names His Stand-Up Comedian Mount Rushmore

(AllHipHop News) Veteran NYC deejay Cipha Sounds is not just a former Hot 97 radio personality and current co-host of the Juan Epstein podcast. Cipha is also a stand-up comedian and curator of The No Small Talk Comedy Series on Tidal.

With his years of experience in the comedy realm, AllHipHop.com connected with Ciph to get his list of joke tellers that he believes should be etched on a potential Mount Rushmore of stand-up comics. The Bronx native selected four funny men that are responsible for causing millions of laughs in comedy clubs, concert halls, and living rooms around the world.

Dave Chappelle

He can rock any crowd. He still loves the art form 100%. He can rock for hours and hours on stage. He will take a regular conversation you have had and go on stage and make that sh-t the funniest comedy bit ever.

Patrice O’Neal

R.I.P. He would spit the truth in the funniest ways possible. He would make a comedy club almost uncomfortable at times with the truth, but then bring it all the way back from the depths of uncomfortable and make it the funniest show ever.

Louis C.K.

The guy is a killer on stage and was coming up with new hours every year. That is very hard to do. But I also like him cause he doesn’t give a sh-t about being the “man” in the industry. He does what the f-ck he wants. It’s impressive.

Jerry Seinfeld

We all know the obvious things that he’s done to change the game. What I like about him is that even though he is rich and famous, he still wants to get on stage all the time and tell jokes – write jokes from scratch, get on stage and tell them, fix and edit them, and then try them again.

Did Chris Rock Just Reveal Andre 3000 Is Working On A New Album?

(AllHipHop Rumors) Many Hip Hop fans have been waiting for Andre 3000 to finally follow after his OutKast partner Big Boi by releasing an official solo studio album. Despite rumors and innuendos for years, that 3 Stacks LP has never arrived. Last night, comedy legend Chris Rock reignited some people’s hope a musical body of work from Dre is on the way.

Rock posted a picture on both Twitter and Instagram that included him, Andre, Dave Chappelle, D-Nice, Jarobi White of A Tribe Called Quest, and Jack White of The White Stripes. The caption for the photo read, “Me, Dave, D-nice, Jack White and Jarobi hard at work on the new Andre 3000 album.”

The statement had social media users questioning if Rock was just joking or if the post was a hint that something was indeed coming from the Grammy winning emcee. Dre was recently in the studio with Kanye West, and in January he said, “I’ve been holding [back] for a long time, so now I’m really interested in figuring out some type of music to do. I’m always recording.”

This is not the first time an industry insider used Twitter to suggest Andre 3000 was set to return with a new LP. Back in 2013, BET executive Stephen Hill tweeted Dre would drop an album the following year which did not happen.

Joey Bada$$ Explains Why He Didn’t Sign To Jay Z’s Roc Nation (VIDEO)

(AllHipHop News) It has been well reported that Jay Z was interested in signing fellow Brooklyn rhymer Joey Bada$$ to his Roc Nation company at one time. Joey even rapped about it on A$AP Rocky’s “1 Train” and his own track “Ready.” The RN deal never happened, and the Pro Era front man decided instead to just build with the independent label Cinematic Music Group.

DJ Whoo Kid caught up with Joey to get more details on why the “Unorthodox” spitter chose not to sign with Jay. According to Bada$$, it was Hov’s own words that convinced him to stay indie.

“I even read Jay Z’s Decoded book. There’s this one chapter where when he went to go meet with Russell Simmons to sign to Def Jam he said his only thought while sitting across the table from Russell Simmons was, ‘Damn, I don’t want to be signed to this n-gga. I want to be this n-gga,'” explained Joey. “I kind of had that same perspective. Shout out to Jay, because he was on it before a lot of people.”

Joey went on to release the Summer Knights mixtape and his debut studio album B4.Da.$$ via Cinematic. The LP opened at #5 on the Billboard 200 album chart and #1 on the Rap Albums chart with first week sales of nearly 54,000 copies. The 21-year-old New Yorker recently announced plans to drop two projects in 2016.
