EXCLUSIVE: Asher Roth Hits #1, Addresses Altercation Reports

Two days after the release of his debut album Asleep in the Bread Aisle, SRC/Universal Recording artist Asher Roth has reached another career milestone.

The Morrisville, Pennsylvania born rapper received news today (April 22) that the album’s lead single, “I Love College” has officially been certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.

The single, released on January 13 in the U.S., is Roth’s tribute to the same college experiences that allowed him to connect with his fans via social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook before becoming a bonafide internet sensation.

A video clip soon followed, featuring appearances by The Cool Kids and DJ/Producer Don Cannon.

Roth’s manager, Scooter Braun, attributes the song’s success to the fans.

“I think it’s a testament to the power of the fans,” Braun told AllHipHop.com. “And it’s also a testament to the fact that people are getting their music from these blogs. And they’re getting introduced to artists.”

Asher Roth fans made their voices heard resoundingly on the Monday (April 20) when Asleep in the Bread Aisle officially hit stores, one day before this weeks other album releases.

According to Braun, the album has completely shocked retailers, who have already doubled their forecasts for what they thought he would sell.

Several fans and bloggers reported being unable to purchase the album on Monday, as retailers around the country sold out of the record by mid-afternoon.

The album also debuted at #1 on iTunes, where it was ranked among albums released on April 14 and earlier, that included the Hannah Montana movie soundtrack.

“I hope that the majors see this and realize that they have to give the music back to the fans and start asking the fans what they want to hear, instead of just trusting research of radio and that stuff. Go to where these kids are and ask them what they want,” Braun stated.

The news comes on the heels of web reports of an altercation Tuesday night (April 21) that left Asher Roth unable to perform as expected in New York City, a rumor the rapper says was grossly exaggerated.

“I wasn’t even really involved,” the rapper told AllHipHop.com exclusively. “I was watching Chester French side stage, and this kid just came up and threw ice at one of my buddies. He slapped me real gently and ran. A friend of mine went after him and the kid got thrown out.”

The rapper added that text messages found in the assailant’s discarded phone, indicated that he might have attended the show with intentions “on creating a scene.”

“I feel bad for the kid and the fact that he thought this was the way to make news,” Asher commented. “But I’m just frustrated that people would put on for that. Please, let’s not continue to make this a big deal.”

Brief interruption aside, the sold out performance, which took place at the Blender Theater at Gramercy, took place without a hitch, with fans joined by industry tastemakers and high powered execs like Sylvia Rhone, Executive Vice President of Universal Records.

Asher was joined onstage by alt rockers, and recent Diddy-collaborators, Chester French and Beanie Siegel, who both make appearances on the album as well.

Asher will be performing a private concert tonight in Philadelphia for winners of an on-air concert run by local radio station Wired 96.5.

Produced by former Miss USA Kenya Moore, Banner plays the role of Jackson, a talented art major on full academic scholarship.

When his best friend and college football star Nigel (Boris Kodjoe) mistakenly kills a man in a gambling dispute, Jackson forms a pact with childhood friend to eat charge.

Under their agreement, Nigel promises that Jackson will be taken care of financially once released.

However, Banner’s character becomes twisted in prison, and upon his release he plots to take over his former friend’s life, starting with the illicit seduction of his lonely wife.

Richard Roundtree, known internationally for his work in Shaft, will also star in the film with more cast members to be announced.

The project is slated to be the first motion picture under Kenya Moore’s Moore Vision Media company.

Previously, the actress/producer has lent her talents to Trois, Deliver Us From Eva, and Waiting to Exhale.

David Banner’s last major motion picture was 2007’s#### holiday drama This Christmas, which grossed close to $50 million dollars.

Principal shooting for The Confidant begins in May, with a tentative release time for Fall 2009.

Greg Street, Glasses Malone Drops ‘2010’ Mixtape

Veteran Atlanta DJ Greg Street has teamed with West Coast rapper Glasses Malone to conceptualize a Dr.Dre-based mixtape entitled 2010.

Originally dubbed Beats By Dre, the 2010 project focuses on bringing together the new generation of West Coast talent to rhyme over the classic production of Dre’s The Chronic and 2001 albums.

“Greg Street came to me with a crazy idea, at first it was going be titled, Beats by Dre,” Malone told AllHipHop.com in a statement. “Street said this CD would probably be one of the biggest mixtapes ever. I did some real street sh*t that the West Coast and the world would love, on some Chronic/NWA street sh*t.”

The 2010 mixtape features appearances from D.O.C., Mistah FAB, Jay Rock, Bangloose, 211, Roccett, K Boy, Big U, OG Muggs, Crib Kev, Black Diamond, and Wayne Hustle.

Even with a plethora of hungry emcees to choose from, Greg Street explained to AllHipHop.com that Malone was always his main choice to host the project.

“I knew this mixtape would be classic and Glasses was the guy who could pull the whole thing off,” Street stated. “Dude is so dope on his verses and concepts for the songs. We’ve worked on this since January and hope you will like it. The message is real and from my heart. Dr. Dre is definitely one of if not the best to do this. His journey and story is incredible. I really hope Dre likes what we did on his beats. It’s all part of the Greg Street stimulus plan, the big bail out on Hip-Hop!”

On the sports end, Greg Street will host the 2009 Atlanta Amateur Boxing Championships at the Metro Fitness Sports Complex.

The family-oriented event takes place on April 25-26, with fights running from noon-8PM on both days.

The event will showcase several divisions, including kids (8-16 years old), seniors (17-34 years old), and novice (17-34 years old with less than 10 bouts).

Tickets are $5 for kids and $10 for adults.

Pharoahe Monch Joins Brooklyn Hip-Hop Fest; Plans New LP W.A.R.

This year’s Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival (BHF) will showcase different vibes on the Hip-Hop soundscape with the addition of rappers Pharaohe Monch and Styles P.

The fifth annual event, which takes place from noon to 8 p.m. June 20 at Empire Fulton Ferry State Park, marks the latest endeavor for Monch, who is best known for his classic hit “Simon Says” as well as his popular collaboration with Mos Def and Nate Dogg, “Oh No.”

In addition to the BHF, the Organized Konfusion co-founder is gearing up for the release of his forthcoming opus, W.A.R. (Let My People Go).

The album, which includes production from Black Milk, Mr. Porter, Lee Stone & M-Phazes, is slated to come out this year.

“Monch is a conscious rapper who is at equal ease on the bully pulpit as he is in the club. Some know him for Organized Konfusion’s ‘Releasing Hypnotical Gasses.’ Some know him for the anthem ‘Simon Says,’” BHF executive director Wes Jackson told AllHipHop.com in a statement.

For this year’s event, BHF organizers hope to unite Monch onstage with Styles P to perform the D-Block affiliate’s 2002 hit, “My Life.”

The pair, along with famed mixtape DJ J. Period, joins previously announced performers Smiff N Wesson as they take the stage for the BHF.

According to Jackson, the new additions represent an effort to give festival attendees more bang for their buck and a well-rounded dose of Hip-Hop in all its forms.

“We are more than pleased when we look at our lineup so far. Our goal has always been to unite the Hip-Hop audience under one banner,” Jackson said. “Monch, Styles and Smif N Wessun represent different branches of the Hip-Hop tree… And J Period is the glue that keeps us all connected. This lineup is diversity. This is Hip-Hop.”

Tickets the fifth annual Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival start at $10.

You Know I Got Soul: Twista

This

edition of You Know I Got Soul features one of the fastest rappers to ever grace

a microphone. Hailing from Chi-Town, Twista’s fast way of rapping was his

ticket to landing his recording contract with Loud Records in 1991, but even

then, acquiring notoriety was difficult to come by.

Through

diligent work, the fast rapping artist finally represented Chicago on the

biggest record of his career, “Slow Jamz” with the help of Jamie Foxx and

mid-west brethren Kanye West. Since then, Jay-Z, Ludacris, Elephant Man, R.

Kelly and more made sure that they worked with the talented Twista. Back with

his seventh album Category F5, slated for a mid-year release, Twista is ready

to rip through the music scene like an F5 tornado to climb the charts once

again. Fans should expect features from his Get Money Gang label as well as he

taps Kanye West, Bobby Valentino and Lil’ Wayne for a guest appearance.

With

a mouth flowing as fast as a category F5 tornado, is there anything out there

to slow him down? Without a mention of Luther Vandross, Twista describes to

AllHipHop.com Alternatives his top five songs that automatically mellow his

energy down to a category F1.1.

“Stir It Up” – Bob Marley

It’s

Bob Marley singing to a woman, but it’s basically a slow down, real [feel] of

the reggae music – the way Bob Marley does his music – and then the

hook itself is the way it sounds. It’s a real mellow song. Most of the songs on

the Legend

CD in particular are like that. So, I just like that it mellows me out.

2.

“Getting Grown” – Cee-Lo GreenGetting Grown – Cee Lo

[This

is from] Cee-Lo Greene’s Closet Freak CD. It’s about a boy becoming a young man. Just

doing a lot of wild things when you’re younger and just how he sees his self

getting grown. It makes me feel elevated. It makes me feel like I’m more

experienced than what I’m doing and how I’m taking care of my business as a

whole. Just being better and looking at through a more adult eye and just the

way the music sounds. That’s one of the first things I play when I get up in

the morning or when I’m getting dressed for a show. That’s what I always play.

3.

“Adore” – Prince Adore – Prince

Yeah!

[snaps fingers to the thought of the song] That’s that thang right there, boy!

That’s that thing that I put on when I just want to get into that groove

because I’m a big Prince fan. I liked “Purple Rain” when that movie came out.

That was a heavy movie when I was coming up. That’s just that song when I want

to hear that vibe or Prince singing that type of tone. Some people might go to

a D’Angelo record, which is cool also, but I go to a Prince record and I bust

that song out, or I bust it out in a room too with a female when I’m ready to

break that mood. Like “BAM!” bust it out when Prince go “Oooooh!” Man, it’s on

and poppin’!

4.

“A Long Time Coming” – Sam CookeA Change Is Gonna Come – Sam Cooke

That’s

my jam right there. For one, it used to be my intro, still is sometimes, for

when I start out my shows. For one, it just sounds real good. When you hear

that song come on it just sounds real good for you and just what he’s talking

about. It’s been a long time coming. Every time I listen to it, I think about

all of the things that I went through and the trials and tribulations that we

went through to get to this point in the music game, us as people when it comes

to Black people, it’s just been a long time coming. [It] says so much,

especially [for] a Black person or a person who been through a lot of stuff.

That always charges me up. It’s like an intro for a boxing match.

5.

“Between The Sheets” – Isley Brothers

[This

song] mellows me out. It makes me want to get into that stepping vibe. It makes

me want to get my freak on, too. It make me feel nasty, it makes me feel like I

want to slow dance, it makes me feel all that.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Superhead Is Married! Asher Roth Beat Up? J-Hud Preggers?

DISCLAIMER:

All content within this section is pure rumor and generally have no factual info outside of what the streets have whispered in our ear. Read on.

THE DAILY TWO SENSE

Mike Tyson came back to NYC the other day, joined by Nas, Mario, Jimmy “Henchmen” Rosmond, Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele, Ice-T and wife Coco and more – click here for the story and here for the pictures.

Everybody has their opinion and here is mine: “Why Rick Ross Will Not Lose

Also, excuse my Typo game! LOL…I saw some doozies!

ASHER ROTH BEAT UP?

I got this in my inbox. Smells like BS, but I know Asher was in New York last night. I wonder if there is any truth to it????

A very reliable source told me tonight that Asher Rother and his brother (or someone that looks JUST like Asher Roth) got beat up tonight by another up and coming New Yprk rapper (did not get a name) Apparently Asher was set to perform at the Blender Theatre when two men approached Asher, punched him in his face, caked his brother with a handful of ice and then got dragged out by security. No word on yet Roth still performed.

WHERE WILL 50 CENT GO?

50 Cent’s term at Interscope as been a glorious one, but after this next album, it may come to an end. 50 is still a bankable artist and I heard he’s got plenty of options. I heard that both Def Jam and Atlantic are very interested in bringing G-Unit in their buildings. Also, it looks like somebody (one of the previously mentioned labels) will be buying out the rest of Lloyd Banks’ contract to bring him over there. Again, Banks is a bankable act as well. Good luck, G’z!

RICK ROSS’ SALES PREDICTIONS!

I got about a hundred thousand trillion emails on Rick Ross and what he’s projected to sell. Not that sales are THAT important to the music, but I just wanted to know what people were guessing. So, I got a wide range. I got a few people that felt that Ricky would straight flop – selling under 80k in his first week to people that felt he could do upwards of 300k. My prediction? I think he’ll be able to do a solid 200-250. I can’t see him moving under 150k off hype alone. We’ll see.

I heard that Rick Ross’ baby mom Tia Kemp and her brother Trabone are going to go see Ross at an autograph session in Florida. I wonder what they are looking to do?

RICK ROSS’ “IN COLD BLOOD” VIDEO

Check out the video for this song. Where the hell is 50 Cent? Now that I think about it, can 50 Cent really come to Def Jam with Ross there?

KARRINE STEFFANS GETS MARRIED!

Superhead is married! She married Eddie Winslow! Sike! She married Darius McCary of “Family Matters!” Wow. AOL broke this story. Here is some of the interview.

Okay, you’ve mentioned “husband” a few times. I had already heard that you and Darius McCrary had quietly reconciled, but is there something else you need to tell?

The statement is that Darius and I have always been married. When and where is confidential. Our license is confidential. In the state of California, if you live together as husband and wife, then you can file a confidential license. Darius and I have always been married, whether it’s spiritually or legally. We’re married on both levels. Legally on paper, signed, sealed, delivered.

But this isn’t a Brandy Norwood kind of marriage? You’re saying you legally went and got married and have a wedding license to prove it. Wow! When did this marriage take place? Was there a ceremony or did you visit the justice of the peace?

Darius and I are not going to explain when and where we got married, if it was before the breakup or after. I’ve known Darius for 20 years. We’ve been living together for two years and we are married. We’re a couple. That was important for us on many levels. With the help of our pastor and the help of our church, it was the right thing to do for the situation that we’re in so whenever we did it, we did it.

Well congratulations! Now that is the perfect transition into the church topic. I have some friends whDarius McCraryo attend Living Waters of San Fernando Valley and I was told you had been there.

Darius and I go to a church in the valley in California called Living Waters, and we have a fabulous, awesome pastor by the name of Barry Lyons. We were going to a Presbyterian church before in Bel-Air. We would go as a formality, but we weren’t satisfied. We didn’t leave feeling fed.

FOXY SEES AMIL!

This Foxboogie Cartoon is like the funniest thing EVER!!! Whoever did it, hit me up – you are the funniest!!

YO! I can’t believe it. “Twenty dollars? What am I gonna do with that?”

J-HUD PREGGERS?

That’s what they are saying! Take a look at the pic and you tell me:

ILLSEED’S QUICKIES

I am hearing that people in BK have been protesting the Obama Fried Chicken for a few days and a local councilman is looking to take the fight to the White House.

Rumor has it, Chris is still dating Rihanna on the low and several new interests are just to throw the media off. Is it all that?

Shoutout to Jill Scott. She had her baby boy and his name is “Baby Jack!”

Amy Winehouse accidentally poured scalding hot water on her legs when she was trying to cook for friends.

Rumor has it, Eminem is going to be on The Jimmy Kimmel show three times in one month. That’s not a relapse – that’s an overdose!

They are saying the Fat Joe almost finished his video, but the NYPD broke it up and stopped the show.

RANDOM QUOTES

Beyonce doesn’t get twitter!

“My sister is the Twitter queen. She told me about the twittering, but I don’t get it, I feel like I’m getting really old. I’m like, what? I don’t understand. Just call me.”

People are weird.

EPIC FAIL OF THE DAY

I know weddings are supposed to be a joyous day, so I hope these good people prove me wrong. HOWEVER, I have to call it how I see it. Missy Quinn wanted to get married. Missy is 16 and her man spouse is only 17. OK. She wanted a big, white wedding and she needed help. First, she needed her daddy’s approval. Her father agreed and let he go an get hitched. Now, for the “big” part. Her father paid $32,000 for a massive wedding dress that wasn’t so massive (see the pic) and let her have 150 guests. There was all sorts of lavish extremities like $10k in flowers. Here is where the fail sets in. Her father is a 35-year-old worker that does driveways and lives in a trailer park. His daugher never finished the 9th grade. THIS WEDDING COST ABOUT $200K!!!!! Last but not least, the bride and broom, I mean groom, moved into their own deluxe trailer that cost rougly $36,000. FAIL! FAIL! FAIL!

Here are some pics.

Lil Wayne Loses In Court; ‘Carter’ Doc Greenlighted

A state court has refused to block the upcoming release of a new controversial documentary on Lil Wayne named The Carter.

The film is being released by QD3 Entertainment, a company owned by producer Quincy Jones III, which has also released Hip-Hop themed titles like Thug Angel, The Freshest Kids, the Beef series and others.

Lil Wayne filed a lawsuit against QD3 Entertainment, claiming the company reneged on a deal that would have allowed him to have approval over the films final cut.

The rapper reportedly took issue with certain scenes displaying his drug use in the documentary, which follows him all over the country and to Amsterdam.

According to the lawsuit, Lil Wayne’s manager reviewed The Carter in December and requested that the scenes in question be removed.

A second cut also failed to live to his manager’s expectations in January and the scenes in question were still in the film when it premiered during the Sundance Film Festival a few weeks later, prompting the lawsuit.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Mink denied a request for a preliminary injunction, paving for the way for QD3 to seed distribution for the project.

“We’re very pleased with the court’s decision,” Quincy Jones III told Variety. “We made a great film, which was incredibly well received at Sundance, and showcases Lil Wayne’s extraordinary talent.”

The Carter, which was directed by Adam Bhala Lough, has no scheduled theatrical release date as of press time.

Rap Stars, Celebs Celebrate Mike Tyson’s Movie Return

Last night former heavyweight champ Mike Tyson was the talk of the evening as a gaggle of celebrities convened in Manhattan’s downtown AMC theater to celebrate the release of the documentary called “Tyson.”

Celebrities included Nas, Mario, Jimmy “Henchmen” Rosemond, Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele, Ice-T and wife Coco, TV host Sway, media personality Egypt, boxing legend “Smokin’” Joe Frazier, Christopher Walken and several others.

Film director James Toback managed to capture the many facets of Mike Tyson from his early beginnings to his present existence as a family man. Much of Tyson’s family and friends were present for the premier as well.

Michael Steele, the chairman of the Republican National Committee, said that seeing Tyson resurrect his career was a joyous reason for celebration and one that he’s very familiar with.

“Mike is family. Mike and I have a long history together. Of course, he was married to my sister Monica,” Steele told AllHipHop.com. “I’m excited for Mike. He’s got a lot of things going on and, you know, he’s pulling all the ends together and this documentary is kind of a way to help him do that.”

Rapper Nas served as one of the movie’s producers and he also crafted the theme song of the movie, a rap tune called “Legendary.” Other producers included basketball player Carmelo Anthony, Hip-Hop producer Salaam Remi Gibbs and Toback.

Rappers like LL Cool J, Tupac Shakur and Canibus all had some form of relationship with Tyson and the icon’s name has been mentioned countless times in rap songs. Nas explained that the Hip-Hop generation has a special affinity for Tyson, as he emerged during a period where Hip-Hop was exploding on the scene.

Nas said, “We never had anybody represent us in the way that Mike Tyson represented. He’s a leader. I think it’s a great thing to…give the people his life. It takes a brave man and an intelligent man [to do that]. You get to see the real side of Mike.”

In “Tyson,” the Brooklyn native cries, expresses rage over his rape conviction, self-doubt, fear and an entire spectrum of seemingly conflicting emotions. He even admits he contracted a sexually transmitted disease prior to winning the heavy weight belt at 19. He was the youngest to do so.

Nas suggested that Mike Tyson could venture into acting, stating that the boxing champ was equipped for everything from drama to comedy.

“Just go back on what Mike has meant to us thought all the years. Mike has been the first baller of our generation, the first champion of our generation that stood for the common man,” he continued.

“I don’t think legacies can be defined. It’s something that we witness. The rise and fall of a man and a boxer and to see him rise again,” said Anthony Anderson, who admitted that his favorite Mike Tyson moment was when he defeated Trevor Berbick.

Ultimately, many felt the film served to give fans a deep dive into the mind of a man mistakenly vilified as a monster.

“A lot of people have an idea about him that’s not correct,” Nas concluded.

“Tyson” will start screenings in Los Angeles and New York on Friday.

Snoop In Line to Host MOBO Awards

West Coast legend Snoop Dogg is currently being considered to host this year’s MOBO awards.

The MOBO (Music Of Black Origin) Awards was founded in 1995, and is an annual UK event that celebrates the music achievements of elite artists, regardless of race, who perform what is deemed “black music.”

Genres that fall under this classification include jazz, soul, R&B, and Hip-Hop. For the last 13 years, the show has run exclusively in London.

This year, organizers have moved the event to Glasgow, Scotland, and are keen on bringing in Snoop due to his past successful hosting duties.

“It would be a huge coup to get Snoop,” an anonymous “insider” explained to The Mirror. “He’s such a crowd pleaser and was a great host of the MTV awards in Munich.”

Three years ago, the UK permanently banned Snoop from entering the country due to an alleged entourage brawl at Heathrow Airport.

Last January, the Long Beach emcee recruited celebrity friends David Beckham and Paul McCartney to assist in having the travel ban reversed.

The 2009 MOBO Award will commence this year on September 30 at Glasgow’s Scottish Exhibition Conference Centre.

At press time, organizers have not announced any performers or award nominees.

Attorney For Rapper C-Murder To Withdraw Over Finances

Rapper C-Murder is facing serious financial trouble as his upcoming murder trial looms, in addition to prosecutors renewed efforts to jail the rapper for allegedly violating a gag order.

In a bombshell announcement in court yesterday (April 20), C-Murder’s longtime attorney Ron Rakosky announced that he wants to withdraw as Miller’s attorney.

Rakosky successfully represented the rapper during his first trial in October 2003.

C-Murder, born Cory Miller, was originally convicted of shooting and killing 16-year-old Steve Thomas during an altercation in a now defunct Jefferson Parish nightclub in 2002.

He was immediately sentenced to a mandatory life sentence.

Thanks to Rakosky, the verdict was overturned in Louisiana Supreme Court in March of 2006, after it was proved that prosecutors expunged the records of several of their witnesses to bolster their credibility.

Yesterday, Rakosky said that C-Murder has not paid him for hundreds of hours in legal fees over the past three years.

According to the Times-Picayune, the attorney asked for permission to be removed from the murder trial, which is scheduled to go before a judge and jury in August.

C-Murder’s need to fund his murder trial may also send him back to jail for violating a gag order.

Prosecutors claim C-Murder used the website to indirectly proclaim his innocence.

“Let me finally take a moment to personally thank all of you for the outpour of love and support you have given me in the past seven difficult years, due to postponements and red tape,” the rapper’s website www.corymillerinnocencefund.com states. “When justice is delayed, then justice has been denied. Had this faulty Justice system been as slow arresting me as they have been in validating my innocence, it would’ve known they had ‘the wrong man’. As the evidence shows, ‘ I am innocent!…As my day in court approaches, my family and I pray and are confident I will be acquitted and cleared of all alleged incidents. When that day finally comes, we’ll be looking forward to celebrating with you in prayer. ”

A news conference the rapper recently held with Reverend Toris Young is also being scrutinized. The rapper participated in an anti-violence/crime rally last week.

Prosecutors say the gathering was a violation of C-Murder’s probation because of Rev. Young’s criminal past.

Three years ago, Young pleaded guilty to 11 felony counts of identity theft and access device fraud. Miller is prohibited from associating with felons.

C-Murder’s murder trial is slated to start on August 3.
