EXCLUSIVE: BJ The Chicago Kid Talks “OMG” Video & Gives An Update On Jay Rock Following Accident

THE SINGER-SONGWRITER ON NEW VISUALS, HIS FRIEND’S CONDITION & THE STATE OF SOUL MUSIC

(AllHipHop News) Motown singer-songwriter BJ The Chicago Kid recently released his major label debut album In My Mind. The LP includes appearances by Kendrick Lamar, Chance the Rapper, Big K.R.I.T., and others. Then shortly after the project’s arrival, BJ dropped a video titled “OMG X Woman’s World” featuring TDE rapper Jay Rock.

“Oh My God” was not included on In My Mind. BJ explained to AllHipHop.com why the Jay Rock assisted cut was left off the final tracklist.

“It was supposed to be on the album, but because of a lot of clearance purposes and other things we chose to give it to you guys in a dope viral video before going to the next level of what we’re about to do,” said BJ.

Jay Rock was recently involved in a serious motorcycle accident. The Black Hippy member is said to be recovering from his injuries. BJ spoke about his friend’s current condition.

“He’s doing well and can’t wait to get back out to continue doing Jay Rock. He’s just taking his time,” stated BJ. “The good energy and prayers sent up are definitely helping the brother. He’s definitely appreciative.”

While In My Mind does not include Jay Rock’s voice, the album is still a monumental moment for music. BJ is helping to breathe life back into Soul music, and the Chicago bred vocalist is not conceding to the criticism that the genre is no longer as vital as it once was.

“I think Soul music is always in a great place. When you got Kanye making songs like ‘The Joy,’ it’s always welcoming us. All roads lead back to Soul music,” declared the Grammy nominated performer. “That’s why you have Drake trying to sing. Fetty Wap is a singer. Ty Dolla Sign is a singer. If all these guys don’t make soulful music, they still do it soulfully. All roads lead back to Soul music.”
