Uncle Luke Suggests Jay-Z Is The NFL's "Token Black Guy"

(AllHipHop News) Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter is back in critics’ crosshairs over his Roc Nation company’s partnership with the National Football League. Some people have a problem with Roc Nation and the NFL selecting Puerto Rican entertainer Jennifer Lopez and Colombian singer Shakira to headline the Super Bowl LIV Halftime Show in Miami.

“Ever since I saw Diana Ross fly off into the sky at the Halftime Show, I dreamed of performing at the Super Bowl,” said Lopez. “And now it’s made even more special not only because it’s the NFL’s 100th anniversary, but also because I am performing with a fellow Latina. I can’t wait to show what us girls can do on the world’s biggest stage.”

South Florida rap legend Luther “Uncle Luke” Campbell expressed his anger over the fact that no African-American nor Hip Hop acts from the area are currently part of the Super Bowl LIV concert experience. He voiced his frustration on Instagram.

“I would’ve thought you had the sense to get Pitbull, Flo-Rida, [Rick] Ross, or somebody, Trick Daddy or something,” said Campbell. “You’re gonna rape the town of all our money… We don’t need the NFL. Our hotels are already filled up. You need us. Jay-Z, you gotta fix this sh*t. I’m just gonna keep it 100.”

The former 2 Live Crew member further discussed his issues with Jay and the NFL on TMZ. Uncle Luke said in a video interview, “They’re basically showing, ‘Let me go get a token black guy, throw him out there, saying we’re dealing with systemic racism, saying we’re having him involved in the entertainment.'”

So far, the Roc Nation/NFL alliance has donated $400,000 to two Chicago nonprofit groups focused on assisting at-risk youth. Roc Nation artists Rapsody and Vic Mensa took part in a mentoring program with BBF Family Services. The teenagers in attendance got to ask the two rappers about life advice, their professional careers, and tips on planning for their futures.

This week also saw the introduction of the NFL Inspire Change’s first record in the “Songs of the Season” series. All revenue from SASH’s “What Would a Champion Do?” track will go to support Inspire Change grant recipients.

During his conversation with TMZ, Luke went on to say the social justice efforts of the League’s Inspire Change initiative deserves an “F” grade. The “Banned in the U.S.A.” and “I Wanna Rock” performer also stated that he loves “everything” that Jay is doing in the business world, but called the Super Bowl LIV Halftime Show lineup a “blackeye.”

“If they did this, and you were at the table and [they] said, ‘Hey look, we’re not going to include these artists from Miami’ – then Jay-Z should’ve been putting in his resignation at that point and say, ‘Y’all ain’t gonna use me like this. You ain’t gonna put my name and my face out there and dirty my face up,” offered Luke.

Campbell continued, “If he does not resign or they don’t make this right, then they’re actually using him. He could then be really considered as what a lot of people said was a sell-out deal from the jump.”
