Waka Flocka Flame has not been shy about his support for former President Donald Trump. The 37-year-old rapper recently made a public request for the Republican MAGA leader.
“Dear Trump abolish Christopher Columbus Day… As a what’s called Blackman in [the] United States this holiday is a spit in our faces… Thanks from Waka Flocka Flame and the People!!!” Waka Flocka tweeted.
On June 28, 1968, President Lyndon Johnson signed legislation to create a celebration for Christopher Columbus’s arrival in the Americas. Columbus Day officially became a federal holiday in the United States in 1971. It is observed on the second Monday in October.
“It is fitting now that we give national expression to our faith in the spirit of discovery embodied by this great adventurer. This new holiday will henceforth honor one of our finest and most cherished national characteristics — our ability to live and work together, men and women of all national origins, as one united and progressive nation,” stated President Johnson in 1968.
There has been significant opposition to Columbus Day. Most of the objections to the holiday stems from Christopher Columbus’s role in the genocidal eradication of the indigenous population in North and South America.
Instead of recognizing Columbus Day, many Americans choose to celebrate the second Monday in October as Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Previously, Waka Flocka Flame claimed to be of Native American descent, not African descent.
Waka Flocka has a history with Donald Trump. In 2021, Trump presented the reality show star, born Juaquin Malphurs, with a Lifetime Achievement Award. That recognition came after the “No Hands” hitmaker tweeted “F### Donald J. Trump” in 2015.
