Native American Rapper Responds To Macklemore’s “White Privilege 2”

(AllHipHop News) A new song from an Indigenous brother of Hip-Hop is taking Macklemore to task after writing the controversial song “White Privilege 2.”

Gyasi Ross, a Native of America, responds to the song, requesting that his fellow Seattle peer “pass the mic” and let others speak for themselves. He relayed his exact feelings on the song and offered up  “White Privilege III” as a lyrical response to Macklemore’s “well-intentioned piece.”

White Privilege III is obviously a response to Macklemore’s well-intentioned piece, ‘White Privilege II.’ Yet, White Privilege III is much bigger than one song as Macklemore is simply the latest in a very long line of white liberals who chose to play the white savior role and speak for brown-skinned people instead of providing the platform for them to speak for themselves. He’s neither the first nor the greatest, only the latest. We must resist that tendency and push white people who wish to be allies to, instead of attempting to speak for us, passing the mic and leveraging their platforms to let us speak for ourselves. Specifically, if Macklemore indeed wished to limit the universe of parties affected by white privilege and ignore Muslims, Latinos, Natives, Asians, etc. as he did in this song, I suppose that’s his prerogative. Still, if he truly wishes to be an ally he should put marginalized voices to the forefront instead of simply consulting with them and keeping the glory for his white guilt epiphany for himself. The next step in the evolution of the ally is simply to utilize her/his platform and make the introduction, get off the stage and let the stakeholder speak for themselves; for the stakeholder to become the subject and not the object.

Pass the mic.

    Mackemore js can’t win….! Lol!

    • Skappie

Damned if he speaks on the issue and damned if he doesnt. Let Macklemore live…

      • O’s

        Smh!

      • DJ7

The “ISSUE” has been spoken on for decades…by men of greater statue than this white kid…It’s time to start doing…you know…putting all that talk into motion or else…it’s just that…talk

      • Skappie

He is just one man, what can he possibly do than speak on it (to show he is not just an ignorant white rapper) and let others listening to his music know white privilege really is a thing

  • #RealSpill

  • Aaron Etrnl

Gimme your story… Don’t try and tell me mine

  • Pac said in a famous 96 the minorities of America REALLY NEED HELP

I guess we don’t really want help as long as we can be 100% real niggaz and shoot down efforts made by whites

We all need damn help. EVERYONE…for different reasons….

Here is where it gets deep though….. European immigrants who came over here after slavery are thrown in the same basket as the ones like the butcher in Gangs Of New York….

Irish were considered niggas and lived in squalor when they ran over here….straight up. And they are the whitest looking motherf***ers but they were in clans/tribes too and still recognize them today….

Italians and greeks…..they are damn near black but their traditional ethnocentric family culture makes the older family members who are about to die still look down on African americans. Young people….not so much. I dated a Greek girl but her parents were cool…

Anybody wonder why people look so ethnically ambiguous in much of eastern europe even far as Germany?….Ever heard of the mongols?

People don’t research history anymore or have any damn sense of geography and it’s impact….

They like to call Moroccans Hindu a** 711 motherf***ers….

    • Q.

The Moors ran all up and through Europe. Africans were the first nobles in Europe–every royal line in Europe and Russia has African blood. In fact, you can’t be a royal without melanin in your lineage. SECRET. Racism flipped the hierarchy of the planet. #BLACKHISTORY

      • Anthony Mason

        Yup bruh…You know your s***….

Hey everyone who is interested in what he said…. Google image “Moors”….and see what they looked like.Your f***ing jaw will drop through the floor….

Maybe that will motivate some of you to take interest in your ACTUAL lineage……

Black people were running s*** like bosses back then….

  • I don’t know…. Seems like some piggieback sh*t to me. Make it off your own sweat (kinda weird saying that about a Native American versus a White person). Or better yet, if you’re going to address the issue, try a new title. There are so many issues within the Native American experience to address and he chose to address a White dude about White privilege? He has a right to but it still seems kinda fake. I never heard of this dude before this.

    • Anthony Mason

Native Americans very much have their own story. Unlike blacks, they were given monetary reparations but they have done little but build casinos and bars. Alcohol ruined generations….This s*** is all f***ed up….like really, really, really….f***ed up bruh….

Minnesota area, indiana area, Iowa….etc. I am part native American too. That is another problem swept under the rug by white people….

      • …they were given monetary reparations but they have done little but build casinos and bars.

As a half-Native man myself, there’s a part of that story that’s never been told. Only white Natives (and that’s still up for debate) got reparations while the Black Natives still didn’t get shit…

      • Anthony Mason

I heard about something like that…

    • hoeyuno

This dude really is a activist though. Dude fights for indigenous rights on the daily..You don’t think white privilege effect Natives just the same??

      • I hear you but…. With all of the other problems plaguing Native Americans, this dude wastes his activism on…

        Macklemore??????? Really? Macklemore????

That seems a little beyond stupid to me. It just feels like an opportunistic moment for him. Native Americans have more reasons to straight beef than Black People. I just didn’t see Macklemore on that list of the TOP 10 IMPORTANT THINGS THAT NATIVE AMERICANS NEED TO PROTEST ABOUT.

      • hoeyuno

hahaha…I actually liked the Macklemore song other then the last verse. There is nothing more lame then a white dude trying to apologize for his white privilege…. My main point though was this dude goes hard for Natives. Gyasi is a Lawyer, a activist and a Emcee. Check out his track “Marlon Brando”

      • Yeah but isn’t he doing what Macklemore did? He’s Native American. Last I checked the song was about Black and White interaction. So…. It still looks suspect.

      • hoeyuno

Natives are effected by the same struggles Black Americans are. Its just “cool” or “trending” to talk and support the black man’s struggles. There is no platform for us to talk about the bullshyt that goes on in our communities. Im actually surprised at all the hate directed at Gyasi for this. Dude just flipped the song to include all brown(black) peoples.

      • I doubt anybody would be saying anything if he came up with an original topic and bum rushed the system with it. I’m down for righteousness no matter the skin tone. But hip hop (real hip hop) is about innovation and originality. D*ck riding on someone else’s shine is not looked upon well in this culture. Especially when you’re off target and nobody even mentioned Native Americans to begin with. Now if he did some dope sh*t on a refreshing level with a Talib Kweli or another MC looking to uplift, that would be dope and better received. But on this it’s almost like he’s putting a dude down when all I gathered was Macklemore was trying to start a healthy dialogue, something that most MCs are too p*ssy to do.

      • hoeyuno

He has some dope original songs. I agree with everything you are saying and do not think this was the greatest move by Gyasi either. My intention is only to try to show you guys this guy is dope weather you like the one move or not.

      • You know what? I don’t know much about dude but let me quit being ignorant and educate myself on his sh*t. Although he’s off on this topic, he might be someone I rock with. To be continued…

      • hoeyuno

        haha thats all I ask

      • Brindle

Natives wasn’t Macs topic, Blacks and hiphop were… this dude is basically trying to high jack the whole concept of the song for his own gains…

      • hoeyuno

I think what Gyasi tries to do is build a bridge between Black and Native peoples. Are struggles are so similar..There are differences but like I said to Jay its always “cool” and “trending” for white Americans hearts to bleed for Black people but we have been getting fucced by the same people since the 1500’s and its still socially accepted to have professional sports teams like the “Redskins”.

Why is it wrong for us to unite to better all of us?

      • Brindle

When black folk unite, we get fukced, look at the Mexican take over with the push for illegals who now take the jobs we used to have. I do believe Native Americans have better intentions but as for this song, dude jacked something that was focused on hiphop and that white boys experience with black lives matter… Nothing wrong with what he did, I still think Mack sucks but I give him credit for the song…

    • Brindle

that’s exactly what it is… Spot on Black… this fool is high jacking his damn self

  • J. Smith

So every time a white person speaks out against the trouble other white people have caused, we’re just going to tell them to shut up? I’ve heard more about people not accepting his offering, than I have about people using it as a point of reference. “Hey, white America! Your son can obviously see what’s going on. How much longer will you pretend not to?” I would have liked to have seen this guy, add on to Macklemore’s song, and pick up where he left off, as opposed to hearing him attack him. Just my opinion.

  • Markus

You give Macklemore credit for saying what other people in his position would not. But when it comes to unifying as a people and addressing issues as a unit, the culture has to do that on its own before taking on allies.

    • W.E.B. Du Bois

white America still “wins” displaying your culture with a million vids online as we speak showing you sexually attacking infants — and no one talking about it

      • hoeyuno

You’ve mentioned child porn on every thread for the last year. You literally type “child Porn” or something equivalent at least 5 times a day..You replaced RM Fag

      • W.E.B. Du Bois

you , like everyone else wont reply to it – just fail at distracting to me like you just failed again

      • hoeyuno

Huh!??? Those ESL classes are not working.

      • W.E.B. Du Bois

“huh” —- dumbass typing with nothing to say

      • Anthony Mason

Niggas idea of a vacation is travelling to third world counties to molest babies then flying back the same day….lmao!!!!

Then posting the pictures for profit on the deep Web to pay for the next “vacation”….

      • Celz

This nicca prolly on the FBI watch list man..

      • W.E.B. Du Bois

when talking to a man who converse in facts found out for myself – you show your stupidity and cant think of nothing to say

      • Celz

Very true, you show stupidity with every post..

  • Q.

Cool idea, but it looks kinda weak when you gotta neg somebody else’s sh!t to come up. That was like a positive negative message. Anything for attention these days! #MILLENNIALTACTICS

    • hoeyuno

Nah Gyasi Ross is legit man. Check him out.

      • Celz

And what he’s talking about is real spill.. Think the teacher in Everybody Hates Chris..

      • hoeyuno

Celz my dude!! Please explain how you compare this to the teacher from Everybody hates Chris??

      • Celz

The teacher in Everybody Hates Chris. Really likes Chris and wants him to excel and feel comfortable. Yet she is incredibly biased and even racist in her dealings with Chris. She assumes that because she has good intentions her negative stereotypes aren’t racist because she attempts to use her negative stereotypes to better help Chris.

Dude isn’t saying Mackelmore is that bad. But the white savior complex is a very real thing. If Kendrick would have dropped the same song word for word, he would be heavily criticized. While Mackelmore will be critically acclaimed for taking a chance and telling the truth. He did the same thing with his gay song.

So Gyasi Ross is saying minorities can speak for themselves. If you want to help let them speak. Let the white public think that its ok for Kendrick to say something as bold as you. Sure Mackelmore means good, but he will gladly take all of the accolades and elevated fame that actually stems from someone else’s pain. A large number of abolitionists weren’t against slavery because they felt blacks were as smart as whites, they supported the movement because they felt they were smarter than slave owners. Slavery was never abolished for equality.

An another example is the NWA movie. Compton is a city torn apart and left in shambles mainly due to racist federal policies such as the IRAN-Contra scandal and racists mortgage lending guidelines. Then you have a group of young kids work hard, barely make it out, become some of the most successful entertainers and businessmen in America, then have a biopic made about the miraculous tale, the movie is a smashing success, wins many awards, then is mainly snubbed from America’s top movie awards, and the people who the movie is actually about aren’t even invited to the award show. The people of Compton, the families of NWA members, and NWA themselves paid a large price for this story to exist, and none of them will be there to witness when it is contention for its most prestigious award.

Ironically one of the underlying themes of the movie was that young black men don’t need a white savior and will be just fine doing for themselves, even in the corporate world.

Sorry went on a lil tangent there. But yea Mackelmore is dope, even if I don’t fucc with his music, but like Gyasi said if Mack wants to be more dope he needs to do more. He isn’t the last hope for black people.. There are many black people who can rap better than him and from a first person viewpoint..

      • hoeyuno

OK I get ya…You were saying it about Macklemore. I thought you were saying it about Gyasi…So your with me then on this haha..I wasnt sure if you were talking about Gyasi or homie Q on your original comment..

Also hahaha at the teacher who was proud of Chris showing up to school even though he never knew his dad and his mom was a crackhead ..

  • Celz

Real shyt though. Give Mack his props but that white savior mentality is passively racist in itself. Not accusing Mackelmore of having that but the whole white savior thing is a huge American problem.. Google it, you’ll be surprised what comes up..

    • W.E.B. Du Bois

google ? – you learn nothing bout life thru research , you can only learn by getting out here

      • Celz

You learn thru your experiences and use that to judge your sources credible.. Then thru research you can learn at a pace that’s exponentially faster. Research will tell you that the abolitionist movement was racist. They didn’t look at black people as equals, good luck experiencing the past…

      • W.E.B. Du Bois

wrong again – research is typed by a lying white child molester that got you praising them , and distracted away from their millions of vids of their culture shown

      • Celz

So you’re saying W.E.B. DuBois never conducted any research?

      • W.E.B. Du Bois

Im saying instead of googling what a lying pedofile typed , we got our research by going out here and getting in it

      • Celz

So now you’re saying that our research isn’t on Google?

      • W.E.B. Du Bois

all you done is show you a dumbass , trying to hide it by asking stupid questions LOL !!

      • hoeyuno

Peoples talking about a fuccin song and here you are talking about molesting children again. Your computer has to be on some monitoring list for all the times you mention that ish..

      • W.E.B. Du Bois

wrong shithead – we talking about research , and what is research

  • Brindle

I get what dude is saying but he’s doing the same thing, Mac’s song was about black lives matter and hiphop music/black cultural music being high jacked by white artist… this dude is basically high jacking that concept for his own… so I say, STFU

  • hoeyuno

My dude Gyasi! Why all the hate??

  • Ionithus

I ain’t mad at dude. He has good intentions. I just see this as an addition of things to come for this racist global structure. It’s going down. Now if he can also address the many white people who claim native American heritage, while being nothing but racist pricks, that would be tight. If he already has, coo. If not get em. Those types urk my nerves and need to be set straight.

  • DreamBigLiveLarge

this was a solid suggestion. I agree 100%

  • damned if you, damned if you don’t . . . there were conversations in respects to why white rappers/entertainers weren’t speaking on the Black Lives Matter movement especially those who are benefitting off of the culture. People were saying “hey they can come in and use the culture to get rich but won’t speak up or do anything when it comes to Black Lives matter etc . . . Now here comes this dude and Marches with the ppl, and then does not one but TWO songs to help shed light on the issue and he gets attacked by some . . . LOL . . .
ANYWAY ON TO THE BIG PICTURE:
There is a plan to divide so that THEY can then conquer, a very old and simple philosophy, and guess what? ITS WORKING!! They used it in Egypt, Syria, Turkey, Iraq etc . . . and they’re using it HERE and IT’S WORKING!! Everyday its another Race story magnified to 1000th degree, a MILLION other stories of different varieties yet this is what’s pushed on the daily…. DIVIDE AND CONQUER. In the End its not about Race its about Classes – Divide and conquer. In the end when society comes crashing there’s gonna be THE POOR of ALL RACES stuck trying to make it to stay alive while the upper CLASS OF ALL RACES heads off to Mars or whatever the F*ck they have planned… but then again who gives a F*ck, these days People change ideologies of race, politics and religion etc every two minutes after watching every other Facebook/youtube/instagram video . . .

    • Team Weezy

No black person listens to white rappers.

      • Celz

No real niccas listen to Rick Ross..

      • LOL

  • ItGoesDownINtheDM

dope … i wouldnt dig to deep its his opinion but @ the sametime you have your right to critic his art …

    • W.E.B. Du Bois

naw dawg , every respectable commenter can explain when asked- you cant comment till you explain what ” finding yourself ” means

  • Team Weezy

    Kill yo selfs, crackers

  • DR.WHO?

Macklemore is the biggest ass kisser in hip hop history
