EXCLUSIVE: Danai Gurira On ‘The Walking Dead,’ Lupita Nyong’o, & Broadway’s Diversity

(AllHipHop News) The popular actress and proven playwright, Danai Gurira, possesses a cache of artistic integrity. Recently, during the 2016 Imagenation Revolution Awards – where she was honored – the talented thespian exclusively spoke with AllHipHop. Within the candid convo the subjects of her thoughts on The Walking Dead, Lupita Nyong’o, and her new Broadway play, Eclipsed were discussed.

Gurira’s ability to portray Michonne’s conflicted characteristics has helped to enthrall the cult following of The Walking Dead. She insists, “These last eight episodes are quite a roller coaster. We are going into situations that we never faced before.” Anticipation grips her, “I’m excited; I’m actually really excited to see people watch it.”

In addition to her small screen success, Ms. Gurira’s kaleidoscope of creativity bolsters an incredible ability to create plays. Today (Feb. 23), Eclipsed is set to début to New York City’s Broadway audience.  In this drama based upon Liberia’s second civil war, the emerging actress Zainab Jah, and the celebrated Lupita Nyong’o are slated to provide standout roles.

“The thing that excites me so much about this is that you’re going to get to see all the new beautiful Black women talent — on one of the biggest and best stages in the world — which is Broadway. And that to me is so thrilling,” she stated. Captivated by a benevolent spirit she then added, “A big mandate to me as an artist, and as a creator of work is to let other women of African descent to get to shine.”

Challenged by the prospect of providing more ethnic diversity Danai Gurira excited about Eclipsed. “To me, what’s the most thrilling is that the world is going to get to see these women shine.”
