Common vs Drake? Hip-Hop Beef Needs a Funeral and a Proper Burial

“Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to pay our last respects to a ‘friend’ that has been dear to many musical artists, fans and readers….that ‘friend’ is HIP-HOP BEEF.”

What forward-moving purpose does Hip-Hop beef serve? Can someone please educate me? I was a little thrown aback by the recent beef that spread quickly throughout the Internet and radio shows involving Common and Drake. Frankly, I found it pretty weak for Common, an artist I respect, to engage in such nonsense.

He supposedly took shots at Drake in his song “Sweet” from his newly released album The Dreamer, The Believer. I wasn’t impressed with the song; too much cursing. I wasn’t that impressed with the album either (I’m still listening to it, though, to see if my opinion will change). And now it continues with Drake supposedly clapping back in the song “Rich Forever,” and as expected, Common getting in more lyrical jabs in the song “Stay Schemin.”

No, I’m not siding with Drake. I don’t even listen to him much at all. I got his album along with Nicki Minaj’s just to see what all the hype was about. They didn’t move me. I just think they are doing an excellent job of mastering their moment.

Getting back to the eulogy for Hip-Hop Beef: I love Hip-Hop culture and trust me I’ve enjoyed true lyrical battles in our history, but this mudslinging, name-calling, backbiting, buffoonery, and randomly picking out other artists just for the heck of it has outlived its usefulness and has become a destructive force. The new trend now is grown men and women using Twitter to take shots instead of sitting down in person to solve our problems. I even read where Young Jeezy said one of his friends was killed due to an exchange of words on Twitter.

When it comes to Hip-Hop, I always sit and wonder who calculates when a beef should start? Who should be targeted? How long it should last? What dirt should be unveiled? Do some artists start beef to make up for poor record sales? Are they thirsting that bad for publicity? Is their marketing and lyrical engine that weak that they need to start a beef to save their careers? If an artist has millions already, why waste time attacking people? Is it out of greed? Is there really a winner in a beef?

Nobody in Hip-Hop can deny that The Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan has been the most critical in putting an end to a lot of the beef in the genre.

Back in 1997, Min. Farrakhan gathered a group of Hip-Hop artists at his home in Chicago to call a truce between East Coast and West Coast rappers. In attendance included Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Common (his name was Common Sense then), Tha Dogg Pound, Willie D, Fat Joe and more.

In 2001, Min. Farrakhan was the keynote speaker at the Hip-Hop Summit in New York hosted by Russell Simmons.”Every time you use your rap song against another rapper and the magazines publish your words, the people that love you then turn on the people that you have spoken against. Then, the one you spoke against speaks back against you and his group becomes inflamed against you. When you are a rapper and you understand your leadership role, you must understand that, with leadership comes responsibility. You did not ask for it. It is imposed on you, but you now have to accept responsibility that you have never accepted,” Min. Farrakhan said to the packed room.

He added, “Your potential to change reality is so great that, if you learned the skill of words and how to use words; if you learned how to say what it is you want to say, but say it in a way that gains universal respect, then the rap would evolve to an art form that will never be replaced. It will evolve to be that form that will set the stage for the next phase of its evolution.”

In 2003, Min. Farrakhan sat down with Ja Rule in the midst of his heated feud with 50 Cent. In his conversation with Ja Rule, that aired on MTV and BET, Min. Farrakhan told Ja Rule not to give in to the pressure of his listeners who wanted him to keep dissing 50 Cent but rather “teach them that there’s more to life than beef.

“A war is about to come down on the rap community. When you and 50 throw down, it goes all the way down into the streets. The media takes the beef between you and 50 and they play it, they jam it, they keep it going. Why would they keep something going that could produce bloodshed? There is a bigger plot here, Ja, and this is what I want you and 50 and our hip-hop brothers and sisters to see,” said Min. Farrakhan.

Where would Hip-Hop be if they had fully implemented the guidance of this wise man? As for the beef, let’s throw some dirt on the coffin and pay our last respects.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Taiwanese Animation Recaps How Jay-Z Baby Security Kept Man From Seeing His Infants?!!

Hova runs things. Don’t y’all know that by now???

There’s already been a well-publicized New York Post rumor floating around  today that Jay-Z’s top-notch security at New York City’s Lenox Hill Hospital kept a man from seeing his own premature, infant babies. Now, we don’t always believe everything we read in the Post, but it seems pretty feasible that this guy, Neil Coulon, is telling the truth, since the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the hospital is the same reported floor as the one Jay-Z bought-out for $1.3 million during the family’s stay.

By the way, a Lenox Hill Hospital rep says that dollar figure is exaggerated, although they did pay a lot of money.

What boggles our minds even more is how quickly these animators and graphic designers are coming up with “Baby Blue Ivy Carter” coverage of their own…and how much work they’re putting into these things! We don’t know about y’all, but we got other work to do! Anyway…

Check out this Taiwanese animation clip that breaks down the whole Blue Ivy Carter birth drama and the “lockdown” being experienced by the other parents at the hospital! LOL!

Snoop Dogg Arrested For Marijuana Possession In Texas

(AllHipHop News) Rapper Snoop Dogg was arrested for possession of marijuana in Texas over the weekend.

TMZ.com reports that Snoop’s tour bus was stopped at a border checkpoint in Sierra Blanca, in West Texas.

During the Border Patrol agents’ routine search of the bus, a K-9 reacted to something in a waste basket.

Police said they found a red prescription bottle with several joints inside, with just under a half-ounce of marijuana.

According to TMZ.com, Snoop claimed responsibility for the marijuana since he has a prescription in California, but Texas has a zero-tolerance policy.

The rapper was issued a citation for misdemeanor drug possession and released.

He faces up to 180 days in jail.

Attempts to reach the rapper’s rep were unsuccessful.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Drake’s Right Hand Disses Common, Calls Him “Old Head”

Well, what do we have here?  A battle. Well, I will be the first to say that I have a bit of a conflict here. I’m on Common’s side. I’m just going to say that as a matter of fact so there is not confusion. There’s no love lost for Drake. He’s dope too, but Common is more my Era.

EDIT: THIS AIN’T 40! I MADE A MISTAKE! ITS SOME SIDE DUDE DOWN WITH THE DRAKE CREW!

So, now that we have that established…I’m peeping the tweets and I see that Drake’s dude and main producer “40” (not 40…another dude named HUSH) is going in on Common pretty crazy. At the same time, I can’t rock with him. His main points of note are that Common is “old” and he’s just beefing to sell records. I don’t know, but I don’t agree. I don’t know, because this seems to be something unspoken going on that we don’t quite know (ie: Serena). At any rate, Common has never been the type to just go at a cat for no reason. And he’s got a career rappers would kill for…Drake included. So, lets see what 40 is saying. Peep the tweets.

(I’m an idiot…see the tweets below from somebody not named 40.)

WHAT DO YOU THINK???

Earlier today (January 9), Mike Posner released the visual for his sophomore album’s first single, “Looks Like Sex.”

The 21-track mixtape includes both original music as well as a few covers and was meant to hold fans over until Sky High‘s release. Joining him on The Layover are a number of Hip-Hop artists, such as Bun B, CyHi Da Prynce, Big K.R.I.T., Elzhi, Slim Thug, and more.

“Looks Like Sex” was co-written and co-produced by Posner and Mason Levy.

Lil’ Wayne has just announced that he is ready to debut his new clothing line “Trukfit.”  The new line will feature clothes dedicated to the culture of skateboarding and quality street wear.  I’m not sure what this line will look like, since lately, Weezy has been dressing like a pre-teen girl from the Valley. Random Weirdness From The ‘Net: Asian Drake & A Genetic “Baby Blue Ivy Carter” Predic-Pic?!?!

Strange Internet Face-Alterations…Featuring Asian, Female Drake???

You can literally find anything on YouTube these days. From people performing various “acts,” to taking bad ones off coffeetables, to giving lessons on how to pop zits, there are a lot of people with A LOT of time on their hands on YouTube.

BUT, every now and then, you see a video where someone has gone above and beyond the stuff that most regular people think about doing. In this clip, an Asian woman decides to transform herself into Black/White, biracial rapper Drake! With not very much, she does a decent job at somewhat, kinda resembling him. The way she nails his lip gestures and hand movements, though??? Priceless! Take a look:

On another note, these Drake fan obsessions are getting just plain kray.

No, Really. What Will/Does Little “Blue Ivy Carter” Look Like?

So, not even 36 hours old, Beyonce and Jay-Z’s baby has already spawned endless photoshopped prediction pics on the Internet of what she will/does look like. There’s even a reported first pic of the baby, although it’s likely one from when auntie Solange gave birth some years back.

BUT, the YouTube clip below might be the closest we’ll get for now to ACTUALLY seeing what Baby Blue Ivy may resemble. You see, someone actually did a reported 90 hours of genetic research into Beyonce and Jay-Z’s backgrounds, coupled with 45 tedious hours of Photoshop, and came up with this! This really looks feasible (if Beyonce’s strong Creole genes won out), but what do you think?:

And Now, On To Some Dysfunctional Family Mess…

Stories like this are well, hmmm…un-friggin-thinkable!! This one comes all the way from Kenya, Africa. So, there’s a cheating husband – not uncommon. A wife who catches her scandalous husband in the act at a motel – still pretty common. And then there’s the husband in the clip below, who decides to turn the tables on wifey, even though he’s clearly been caught!:

Dang, where they do ‘dat at??? Apparently somewhere in Kenya.

Common Drops New Diss Record Directed Towards Drake

(AllHipHop News) Despite the fact that the Rick Ross’ Rich Forever was undoubtably the most downloaded mixtape last week, many hip-hop fans have paid closer attention to the Drake verse that was seemingly directed at Chicago rapper Common on the French Montana assisted, “Stay Schemin'” track.

Although Drake didn’t say Common’s name, Common has already replied with a diss record over the same beat and has specifically called out Drake for his use of singing during his raps and the sensitive nature of some of his songs.

“My motto is Chicago b**ch, everybody know you’re sweet, what the problem is? / Don’t play dumb, I’m the one that acknowledged it, son of a b**ch I imagine what you father is/She said how you make your oppponent?/The rapper of the moment, the style he don’t own it…

And later Common raps:

Can’t say a ni**a name but you rap about a ni**as wife, you sho’ black and white tryna live a ni**a’s life/I’m taking too long with this amateur guy, you aint wet nobody ni**a, you Canada Dry. ”

While the nature of the beef is unclear, some speculate that it could be centered around professional tennis star Serena Williams, who is rumored to have been involved with both artists.

“Soft ni**a, make no mistake, I’m taking to Drake,” Common concluded.

To make matters worse for Drake, Common concluded the song with Destiny Child’s song, “Say My Name” repeating in the background of the track.

Drake has not yet replied on Twitter or in any interviews as of press time.
