Stars Line Up To Celebrate Pac’s 38th B-Day

Afeni Shakur has confirmed the participation of more celebrities for today’s (June 16) Atlanta celebration of her son’s birthday.

The idea for the event originated with co-host Mike Epps, who worked hard to fit in the festivities with his national comedy tour commitment, and two new movies in “Next Day Air” and “Janky Promoters.”

The benefit concert will take place in the Tupac Amaru Center for the Arts, and feature appearances from Big Boi, Dungeon Family, Playas Circle, Bun B, Lil Scrappy, Young LA, B.o.B., and Eightball and MJG.

Along with Mike Epps, hosting duties will be handled by Dead Prez member M-1.

While attending the concert, first-time visitors to the Stone Mountain facility can experience the rotating exhibits, gift shop, 6-acre Peace Garden, and purchase Tupac memorabilia.

Tickets for the event are $25, and can be purchased at www.tasf.org, or the Tupaac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts box office, located on 5616 Memorial Drive in Stone Mountain, GA.

All proceeds from the fundraising concert will go to the Tupac Amaru Center for the Arts.

In the thirteen years since his death, Tupac has become an iconic figure whose influence has been studied on musical, educational, and social levels.

Today, Tupac Amaru Shakur would have celebrated his 38th birthday.

Jay Rock: From Gangbanging To Banging Beats

Watts, CA rapper Jay Rock, a product of the Nickerson Gardens projects which is home to one of the largest Blood sets in Los Angeles, has become one of the top new West Coast faces on today’s rap scene. With the help of superstars Lil Wayne and Will.I.Am, Jay Rock’s “All My Life” single received a good amount of radio play not just in Los Angeles but in cities around the nation. The huge co-sign from the superstars opened up the doors but it was up to Jay’s own skills to ensure that he stood out on his own as an artist and not get lost to the features on his own song. With a style that some say is similar to Compton superstar The Game, Jay Rock uses a rough gritty flow in raps that details life growing up in the ever-dangerous city of Watts. Signed to Warner Brothers, Jay Rock is preparing his debut album and is out to make his presence known as one of rap’s new faces. The young artist recently sat down with AllHipHop to talk about his budding career, his radio hit “All My Life” and his surprising alliance with rival gang-member and fellow upcoming West Coast artist Nipsey Hussle.

AllHipHop.com: You grew up in the notorious Watts Nickerson Gardens projects. Tell us how you went from gang-banging to rapping.

Jay Rock: I started rapping at about 13 or 14 years old with the homies around the hood but I didn’t really get serious about it until about 4 to 5 years ago. That’s when I really started to get more serious and began doing mixtapes. People started telling me that I was hard. I was just a young dude out there trying to hold his own by gangbanging and slangin’ a little bit – trying to bring some food to the table for the family. I was running around the mean streets being raised by the big homies. I used to listen to the homies O.F.T.B. who were from the neighborhood and were signed to Death Row. I also listened to N.W.A., Snoop Dogg and of course 2Pac was my favorite. By 16 I started to develop my own style and tried to say some sh*t that really meant something. I started to put all of the stuff that was going on in my neighborhood in to my raps and that’s when I started to get serious.

AllHipHop.com: How did you go from someone doing underground mixtapes to being signed to Warner Brothers?

Jay Rock: I had done a few mixtapes that got in to the hands of one of my big homies named Dude Dawg. He grew up in the projects and made it out but I didn’t know that he was involved in the music business. He started looking for me and I thought he was coming to discipline me for some stuff I did in the neighborhood, because he used to always come back and try to holler at the young homies in the hood. I started ducking and dodging this n***a, but he was trying to come at me on some other stuff. One day I was sitting on my porch getting a haircut and he pulled up on me in his truck and I was like, “Aw sh*t!” Then he was like, “I heard you on some mixtapes and I want to put you in the studio.” That sh*t threw me off! I finished up my haircut and hopped in the truck with him. He locked me in the studio and told me he wasn’t going to let me out until I come out with 3 good songs. I go in there and I’m thinking about my money in the streets so I hurry and put some bullsh*t together. He listened to it and told me to get my a** back in the studio. He had me locked up for 3 days and I worked. He took the 3 songs that he really liked and took them to the labels. A few the labels put their bids in and he chose to go with Warner Brothers.

AllHipHop.com: Its good have someone like that to push you and drive you.

Jay Rock: Real talk. The big homies that know better should always come back and grab the younger homies and try to help them out. He told me that’s why he came and got me and for me to do the same thing one day for some of the other n****s to pull them out of the bullsh*t.

“I don’t give a f**k what anybody says about [Lil’] Wayne. People call him fake

or whatever, but he’s a real n***a to me. A lot of people that I’ve

spoken to in this industry have told me one thing and done another, so

I respect Wayne for what he did.

AllHipHop.com: I see that’s already started with you. Last Thanksgiving I saw you on Fox 11 News giving out Turkeys to residents of the Nickerson Gardens projects.

Jay Rock: Growing up, there were times that we didn’t have food on the table. Sometimes Thanksgiving was a struggle for us. Growing up in those projects, I know who’s doing ok and who needs help. That prompted me to go back to my hood and take some Turkeys for me to give out and to look out for those that don’t much. I haven’t made it big yet but I’m doing somewhat better than I was. I need to start making a difference now. I wanted to try to bring some hope. I’d like to do things on a bigger scale. This Thanksgiving coming up, I’m planning on doing something even bigger.

AllHipHop.com: Are you going to do this in your neighborhood only or spread it out to more areas in the city?

Jay Rock: This was my first time doing that and it was cool. I want to do it on a bigger scale in my neighborhood first and then I want to branch out to different projects and help out people from projects all over the world. If I were to go to a project in Atlanta, I’d want to team with some of their local artists and do it together. I don’t want to do it for my own shine. I want to do this out of love. I want to hand this off to other artists and show them what I’ve done in my hood so they can do the same in their hoods.

AllHipHop.com: You hooked up with Lil Wayne and Will.I.Am for your single “All My Life.” How did you make that happen?

Jay Rock: I met Lil Wayne when he did a show out here in L.A. Me and my people were backstage and I was there trying to make my presence felt so people can know who I am. I introduced myself to him as “the next n***a from my city to blow up” and I told him that I wanted to work with him. He gave me his math and he was a real n***a. He gave me the real hook-up on him and told me that if I needed something to hit him up. Cool & Dre gave me a record and I got down on it and I figured that this was the record that I wanted Wayne to get on. I hit him up and told him that I needed him on the record and he told me to send it to him. I wanted to do it in a real way so I offered to meet him wherever he was and bring it to him myself. He was in Washington D.C. at the time so I bought some tickets and met him at his tour bus. He was asleep on the bus and I showed up banging on the door. I told him that I had the song and he told me that he couldn’t do it then because he had to go to South Carolina. So me and my boys jumped in our rental car and drove with the tour bus to South Carolina. From there we went to Pharrell’s studio in Virginia and the rest is history. We were in the studio for like 12 hours and the dude was like a machine. We knocked out 15 verses that night and he blessed me with a hell of a verse for the “All My Life” song.

I don’t give a f**k what anybody says about Wayne. People call him fake or whatever, but he’s a real n***a to me. A lot of people that I’ve spoken to in this industry have told me one thing and done another, so I respect Wayne for what he did. I don’t care what anybody says. He’s a real n***a to me.

“It’s time for the Black on Black [crime] to get cut off. Me and Nipsey are going to be the two to get that [money] because nobody is expecting us to get together like that. We’ve

got a new President that’s Black and it doesn’t make any sense for

Crips and Bloods to continue fighting and killing each other.

AllHipHop.com: The original version of “All My Life” had your homie K-Dot doing the hook but then you released another version with Will.I.Am from The Black Eyed Peas. What was the reason for that?

Jay Rock: My camp and I loved the version with K-Dot but when we took the song to the radio, they didn’t like the hook. They told us that the hook needed to be better. So we had to go back and re-do the hook. I ran in to Will.I.Am while we were both working at The Record Plant studio and I got at him there. He’s from the projects too – not the same one as mine but he’s a project boy also. I asked him to bless the song with a hook and he agreed. He added that “ghetto, ghetto” on there and we took it back to the radio and they thought it was a cool hook. So we ran with that version.

AllHipHop.com: Honestly, which version do you like better?

Jay Rock: I love the version that K-Dot did, that was my sh*t. To me that hook said more. Those are the politics of the game. I really needed that air-play. Some people were disappointed in me for changing the song and felt that I was selling out for the radio but they don’t understand the politics of it all. You really do need that radio exposure. If it was up to me and I had the choice, I would have ran with the K-Dot version.

AllHipHop.com: When I hear that, I really have to question the ears of the radio people that turned down the original version. It’s a much superior song. That’s no knock on Will.I.am though.

Jay Rock: That’s real talk. I don’t want to diss anybody in radio but it is difficult trying to please them. You make a song that you really love and you take it to them and they are like, “No. This isn’t it.” That song will never get the chance to really be out there because they feel that it’s not “it.”

AllHipHop.com: What is the status on the album? Has Warner Brothers given you a real release schedule?

Jay Rock: We were trying to get it out this summer but right now we are looking at having a September release. I’ve got to get that next record out there and get it moving. I’m not trying to rush it and have it do like 18,000 upon its release. I am trying to sell as many as I can when it comes out. I know there are people waiting and I appreciate their patience but I want to come out on top. When you are in a rush, sometimes you don’t do sh*t right.

Jay Rock – “DOA Freestyle”

AllHipHop.com: You announced via Twitter last week that you are teaming up with fellow rising West Coast artist Nipsey Hussle for a few projects. Can you tell us about that?

Jay Rock: Nipsey is my dude. We’ve got a lot of sh*t in the works. We want to shock the world and put the town on our backs – to push it the way Snoop & Dre did it back in the day. We are two young n***ga’s trying to make it.

AllHipHop.com: You’re a Watts Blood and he’s a South Central Crip. How does that all mix together?

Jay Rock: Red and Blue makes Green. We are on some other sh*t now. It’s time for the Black on Black bullsh*t to get cut off. We’ve got two big homies over us telling us both that it’s time for a change and for us to all stick together as one, instead of fighting. Instead of Red and Blue splattering Red blood all over the city, it’s time for us to make Green together. Me and Nipsey are going to be the two to get that going because nobody is expecting us to get together like that. We’ve got a new President that’s Black and it doesn’t make any sense for Crips and Bloods to continue fighting and killing each other. I’m young but I have seen how bad that sh*t is for us. I’ve got a baby now and I don’t want to walk out the door and have some n***a knock me off with my daughter in my arms. That sh*t is played out.

AllHipHop.com: Do you believe that you two can have a positive impact and have others follow your lead?

Jay Rock: I think it’s started already. We did the Green Lantern show on Sirius and everybody expected us to be on some bull-crap. People were shocked when they found out how tight we were. Some of my people may have had doubts about him and vice-versa but we showed them something different. I think we can make a big dent as long as were are out there grinding and showing that it can all be good.

AllHipHop.com: We’ve also heard that you are teaming up with DJ Drama for a new project. Is that correct?

Jay Rock: It’s coming! I’m 15 songs deep on it right now. I’ve got to at least do another 10 so he can pick the ones that he wants to use.

AllHipHop.com: I know that you are good friends with The Game. Do you two have anything coming out together?

Jay Rock: The Game is the homie. We do have some records in the works. He took me and Nipsey on tour. This is the second time that he’s taken me on tour with him. Game has helped open up the door for me and others, so I have nothing but appreciation for him. People compare us and say that we sound alike.

AllHipHop.com: I’ve seen people say that you sound like Game. Does that offend you?

Jay Rock: That doesn’t offend me. I don’t think I sound like Game – but at the same time he’s sold millions of records. If someone is going to buy my records because of that, then keep preaching it. I don’t think that we sound like though. Game is Game and I’m Jay Rock.

Jay-Z and all the Roc-A-Fellas…I hope you are ready for this one! Amil, the girl that was dissed at every show…is coming back. I am hearing that Amil is about to write a tell all about her life and times over there at the house the Jay and Dame built. She’s been quiet but that’s about to change, my super sources say. Basically, you can take this one to the bank. I wonder if this will strike fear in the hearts of thugs and millionaires?

LIL WAYNE BUYS HOMES FOR BABY MOMS?

Well, it would seem that the truth is coming out and that Lil Wayne indeed has babies coming from both Lauren London and Nivea. I haven’t seen anything that is refuting that. But, I am hearing that Wayne is being the ultimate good father. According to one of the morning shows (we don’t know which) has reported that Wayne recently purchased new homes for both of his soon to be baby moms. WOW. How funny is that? Like, one baby is going to be luckier, because he mom is Lauren London. LOL.

REMY MA THE BIG TIME GRADUATE!

Valedictorian. What is that? AHHH…look it up if you don’t know. One of my homeys was upstate at Bedford Hills correctional facility a ways back for a graduation and guess what? Remy Smith aka Remy Ma was one of the valedictorians. I heard she was one of the speakers for the graduation and Papoose was there to show his support. WHAT RAPPER CAUSES MAYHEM IN NYC?

Yesterday morning there was a stabbing in a NYC neighborhood. Two men were stabbed and one dude got shot. From what I have been told one of the men who got stabbed died. Anyways the hood is saying that this all happened because the people who got injured robbed the brother of a rapper that was once signed to a bigger-named rapper. The word on the street is the brother was robbed for his chain.

DIDDY HAS A PROBLEM AND THAT PROBLEM’S NAME IS BOW WOW

Boston Summer Jam when down a couple days ago and something very odd went down on the stage. When Bow Wow got on the stage, I heard he lost his mind for a few minutes. The rumor is, he got up there and started running his mouth about Ciara. I heard he talked about her quite a lot during the entire show, but shocked everybody. He allegedly said that he wasn’t stressing Ciara like everybody thought he was, because he was sleeping with Cassie. Fam…what the heck?

Bentley Signs With E1; Kanye Executive Producing Album

Musician and reality TV star Fonzworth Bentley has become the latest artist to join E1 Music, the label formerly known as KOCH Records and its ever-growing roster of Hip-Hop stars.

The From Gs to Gents star announced that he has partnered with E1 Music for the release of his long-awaited debut album CoolOutrageousLoversOfUniquelyRawStyle (C.O.L.O.U.R.S).

While the album does not have a scheduled release date yet, E1 and Bentley have confirmed that Kanye West has signed on the as the Executive Producer of his G.O.O.D. Music protégé.

Along with the announcement, Bentley revealed the second single, “Greener,“ which follows the release of his popular single “Everybody,” which featured Kanye and Bentley’s longtime friend Andre 3000.

“Greener” features crooner Anthony Hamilton helping Bentley deliver an important message over production by Chris Scholar.

“Being Greener is a lifestyle,” the “first gentleman of Hip-Hop” explained. “A better diet, taking care of our environment, and maintaining healthy relationships. I believe that living a greener lifestyle is important, yet challenging. The song ‘Greener’ is about leaving the past and looking to the future…whether it is a relationship, a career change or any type of upgrade in your life. ‘Greener’ ultimately speaks to broadening our horizons and celebrating new possibilities. It is my hope that after listening and seeing the visual for ‘Greener,’ people will be inspired to join the movement.”

The new song is simply a continuation of Bentley’s effort to usher in the new “Cool,” which he defines as having faith in God, the importance of education, self respect and treating others as you want to be treated.

If these concepts sound familiar, it is because they are the foundation of his popular MTV series From Gs to Gents.

The rapper and author maintains a very close relationship with the former From Gs to Gents contestants, he told AllHipHop.com in a previous interview.

And he continues to participate in activities that will allow him to reach an even wider audience.

On Saturday (June 13), Bentley spoke to approximately 500 teens from the New York Tri-State area as the featured guest of Hip-Hop 4 Life’s second annual YouthFest.

During the event’s Rap Session, Bentley joined activist and author Kevin Powell, producer Kwame, KISS FM personalities Raaqiyah Mays and Talent, Sinorice Moss and BET hosts Samson and Alesha Renee to create a fun, interactive empowerment setting for the youngsters.

“It was inspiring to see the amount of youth there to hear from the those of us who volunteered our time,” Bentley told AllHipHop.com of the experience.

“But it was also inspiring to see just how many did volunteer their time on a Saturday. They could [have been] doing anything else and instead decided to motivate and empower the youth. I feel like some real seeds were planted, some they might not even realize yet. But with programs like Hip Hop 4 Life’s YouthFest, they will continue to grow.”

Sticky Fingaz Shoots Friend In Mishap

Sticky Fingaz and a friend were playing with a gun and the firearm accidentally discharged and shot the friend in the leg.

Luce Cannon, an associate of Sticky Fingaz, was shot in the shin, a wound that shattered the bone in his leg. According to tmz.com, Luce is underwent surgery and is recovering from the shot that happened last week.

No charges have been filed.

The report states that Sticky was “showing off” his Desert Eagle gun, when it inadvertently went off.

Sticky is a licensed gun owner that has rapped on hit records such as “Throw Ya Gunz” with his rap group Onyx.

J. Cole: Roc Nation’s Young Gun

“Get your buzz up” has become the prevailing mantra for the unsigned hip hop community in the past five to 10 years. The quality of an artist’s music has played second string to their ability to acquire a following independently. This new breed of artists with “movements” has converted record labels from havens for the development of new talent into investment firms searching for the next small business to acquire and fund.

Enter the “buzzless” J. Cole, the first Hip-Hop artist in recent years to be signed based primarily on his music. Seemingly coming ‘out of nowhere,’ the Fayetteville, North Carolina native and current Jamaica, New York resident has found himself in one of the most lucrative label situations in the hip hop world. He is Jay-Z’s first and only signing to his forward-thinking attempt at resurrecting a decrepit hip hop industry, known as Roc Nation. On the verge of releasing his first major mixtape, The Warm Up, J. Cole, who’s name has begun to light up the blogs over the course of the past month, sat down with AllHipHop to discuss his unique situation and what the hip hop world can expect from a soulful lyricist/producer who puts the music over the movement.

AllHipHop.com: So now you are the first artist signed to Roc Nation; very prestigious. How did you end up meeting Jay-Z and getting the deal?

J. Cole: Well, as the story goes, somebody ended up playing the song I had [called] “Lights Please” for Jay. And from what I’m told, he heard it, and as soon as he heard it he was just like ‘yo, who is this kid, like what the f###, I wanna set up the meeting.’ When it was told to me I didn’t believe it, like I always say and a few weeks later I got the call out of nowhere. Just as I was starting to lose faith that is was real, I got the call that he wanted to meet. So I just flew out to the city, met with him for like three of four hours and the rest is history. Couple months later we’re doing a deal.

AllHipHop.com: Did you ask Jay any of those fan “if I ever meet Jay I’m definitely going to ask him…” questions?

J. Cole: Aww man, I still haven’t, I ask him questions but I haven’t asked him some of those questions like “Yo one day I’m gonna ask him…” I don’t feel that comfortable yet. But I did tell him this funny story about how I stood outside the studio all night just waiting for him to come and I had beat CD for American Gangster, I was trying to get (a beat) on American Gangster and I tried to give it to him and he just played the s### out of me. He was just like ‘yo, I don’t want that s###.’ I told him the story, it’s a hilarious story.

AllHipHop.com: So Roc Nation is not your run of the mill record label. How does your deal differ from an artist that signs with an Atlantic or a Def Jam?

J. Cole: I don’t know how their deals work over there now, so it might be similar but my deal is almost like all levels, obviously. Its not just record sales anymore it’s touring, it’s merchandising, actually I don’t think they get merchandising, but it’s a lot more well rounded. But this works to my advantage because I’m not just left out there to dry if my album doesn’t do well. Which I’m not expecting, but lets just say it did, I wouldn’t be left out to dry, they would still be booking me shows cause they have an interest in that, they’re taking a piece.

AllHipHop.com: Ok so you have this mixtape The Warm Up about to be released. What can people look forward to on that? What’s the sound like?

J. Cole: I guess just an overview of my sound meaning you can expect a lot of storytelling, witty lyricism, introspective lyrics, you know, I get deep. I got some fun s### on there. But one thing you can expect is, what’s the word, like a concise sound. Its me doing most of the production so its not one of those mixtapes where it’s like every song is different. It’s not like that. There’s a sound, it almost feels like and album, it flows. So you can expect that. (There is) a lot of production from me. (There are) only two other producers on it, two songs. (not produced by me)

AllHipHop.com: So you are from Fayetteville NC which is a big Army recruitment town. What was it like for you growing up?

J. Cole: Well, the whole reason I was there is because I was an army brat. My mother and my father were in the army when I was young, so that’s how we ended up there. Its diverse, there’s a whole bunch of different types of people. You got, White, Black, Asian, Latino. So you meet a lot of different types of people, (I have had) a lot of different types of experiences. I done seen it all from the worst side of town to new kids from the best side of town.

AllHipHop.com: I can imagine it must have been a big change moving to NYC. What kind of adjustments did you have to make?

J. Cole: First of all, I had to get my sense of direction around here, it’s such a big city. [I had to] figure out how things work as far as trains and s###. I had to adjust to attitudes. It’s faster paced so people have much shorter tempers and just different interactions with people. So I had to get used to all of that, get adjusted to being in school and not being around any family and having that to fall back on.

AllHipHop.com: Now you graduated from St Johns in 2007 and from what I understand you were an excellent student. Since you were obviously not relying on your talents as a rapper to be your meal ticket, what was your major? What were you planning to do if the rap thing didn’t work out?

J. Cole: I started out a Computer Science major as a freshman but I switched quick as hell cause it was boring, to me. Then I switched to Communications a couple years later. It seemed like a generic major but I couldn’t picture myself doing anything else. But the honest truth is I never ever even visualized any other career, I never even decided on the type of job I would look for. I knew, at least I hoped, I just knew it would be rap.

AllHipHop.com: Shifting gears, your first mixtape The Come Up hosted by DJ On Point came out in 2007. How did you connect with On Point and how did this tape help you get the attention of your new manager Mark Pitts?

J. Cole: I got On Point for the mixtape through my man Aristotle. We were working together for a while, back in 07. So he set up the On Point thing. As far as the mixtape goes, it didn’t get me to Mark Pitts. (laughs) I don’t even know if Mark Pitts honestly has heard The Come Up, it was so under the radar like that. I got to Mark Pitts through other avenues. Actually someone that works for him happened to hear my s### and got it to him. So The Come Up was really under the radar, people are just now going back to listen to it.

AllHipHop.com: You recently went on a small tour with Wale. Was that your first time on tour? What was that experience like?

J. Cole: Yeah, that was my first time on tour. I really didn’t even go to every city with him, I was doing east coast cities. It was fun man, it was literally just me and my team hoping in the whip and driving down the east coast to the shows. It was fun. It gets no more fun than that at these beginning stages. We’re paying for s### (like) food out our pockets, hotels and s###. It’s just really the grind. It was the best man because people don’t know you when you get on stage and they don’t know whether they want to cheer for you or be like ‘get the f### off the stage.’ By the end of the show hopefully I grabbed their attention enough for them to be like ‘yo that dude was sick, what was his name again?’

AllHipHop.com: These days it seems like artists need to saturate the market independently before they are able to get a deal which can be a problem because when they do get their deal and its time to release a project, their is no anticipation because they have released so much material. You on the other hand got you deal before the buzz really even began which is reminiscent of a 90s marketing format. Do you feel like that gives you an advantage?

J. Cole: I hope so. I hope that gives me an advantage. I think so and I hope so but that was all planned. Three years ago when I was really like ‘I’m getting a deal, f### it.’ Everybody was saying that you have to go out and get your buzz first before you get a deal. You have to put out mixtape after mixtape, you have to do this, you have to get radio, you have to get your myspace friends up. I think right now I probably got 2,000 myspace friends. There are independent artists with way more friends than me. I have no buzz, or had no buzz up until right now. So I never believed in that theory. I was always the one that was like ‘I don’t HAVE to do that I don’t have to f##### follow that way of thinking’ And I didn’t I got a deal based off my music with zero buzz. And it does help me out because I’m sneaking up on the game rather than already having my name out there. Now people are more curious like ‘who the f### is this that just got signed.’ It’s just like what you said, the way it used to be.

AllHipHop.com: Hopefully they’ll start doing that again.

J. Cole: Yeah, I hope so.

AllHiphop.com: Another artist whose buzz is defining right now is Drake. I have heard people compare you to Drake several times in the past few weeks. I don’t really hear the similarities, have you been getting a lot of that?

J. Cole: I’ve been getting enough of it to hear about it but I wouldn’t say I’ve been getting a lot of it. But I’ve definitely heard it.

AllHipHop.com: When I listen to your music, I hear subtle elements of 2pac, Nas and Kanye West. Who are your biggest influences?

J. Cole: Damn, everybody you just named definitely. 2pac is just my favorite rapper, period. Kanye, he’s one of my favorite rap ARTISTS, period. Not even just rapper/producer, just one of my favorite rap artists ever. Nas, I’m a huge fan, huge studier. Eminem as well was big for me. Even Royce Da 5’9” in that same 98/99/2000 period, Royce was huge for me, Canibus…and Jay of course, a sprinkle of Jay. These are artists that all had huge influence on me. Kanye definitely though with the beats, and Dilla and Preemo (laughs) as I fade out with all of the greats.

“Simba”

AllHipHop.com: I have heard a great deal of your music but the record I have seen generating a buzz online is “Grown Simba” what’s the reaction you have been getting from that song?

J. Cole: It’s been great. From what I’ve seen from it, it’s a good response. People are really feeling the beat. I’m proud of that. And I just see people saying ‘oh he goes hard.’ But I look at it like, those songs that I put out, other than “Dead Presidents 2,” I feel like the other songs that I put out, they’re dope, I like them and I stand for them but they don’t even really truly reflect me. You’re gonna see the ENTIRE me on the mixtape. That’s why I’m really adamant about people listening to the whole mixtape and not judging based on “Grown Simba” or “Dead Presidents 2,” hearing everything. But “Grown Simba” yeah, I love that song.

AllHipHop.com: Have you begun working on the album? What producers have you been getting in with? Any secret Jay-Z colabs we should (or shouldn’t) know about?

J. Cole: (laughs) As far as my album, yeah I’ve been working for the past two years on my album, so I been working on that but once this “Warm Up” s### kinda cools off, little play on words, (laughs) I’ll be able to really get in. Two weeks from now I’ll be able to really sit down, analyze what I’ve got, what needs to go, what needs to come in. As far as secret Jay-Z collaborations man, I mean all I can say is, (laughs) if there were to be any secret Jay-Z collaborations, I wouldn’t be able to speak on them. BUT, you know, I would ASSUME that by this point I might have been in the studio with him. If I was an outsider looking in I might assume that, but I’m not saying anything in particular you know… (laughs)

AllHipHop.com: What can the people look forward to from J. Cole in the coming year?

J. Cole: This bangin ass mixtape that I need you to dive in (to) and explore, in an out, which is called The Warm Up. I’m on Wale’s mixtape as well, “Back to the Feature.” I’m on Wale’s album which comes out I think end of the summer. I might, I got some top-secret s### lined up, top-secret features lined up. And then look for a big college tour from me. Not big in terms of size but big for me in terms of my idea for it. So look out for that next semester, what’s that fall 09 for all you college kids. And you know, just look for me around, I’m working hard. I haven’t gotten a deal and gotten comfortable, I feel like I haven’t made it yet. So I still got a lot of work to do.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Lil Wayne’s New Foe! Fake Lil Wayne Needed! Amber’s Down With Drake!

DISCLAIMER:

All content within this section is pure rumor and generally have no factual info outside of what the streets have whispered in our ear. Read on…

THIS IS REAL: LIL WAYNE IMPERSONATOR NEEDED

This may be the foulest thing I ever saw in my LIFE!!!!!!! Peep this and tell me its not!

My son is turning 16 and really wanted Lil Wayne to perform for his birthday gala. Unfortunately his schedule will not permit him to make it. I need a Lil Wayne impersonator desperately.

Here is the kicker my son is blind so you do not need to look like the rapper just sound like him. I understand he grunts and mumbles a lot. I don’t care if you are 67 and Jewish if you can sing the songs you’re hired. Money is not an issue. Name your price. Interested individuals please let me know your rap experience, video of you performing as Lil Wayne would be better. If that is not feasible we can arrange for a live audition.

Serious inquiries only, this is very important to my family. Young Money Baby!

LAUREN LONDON IS HEATED AT LIL WAYNE!!!!

If you are a pimp, you have to respect Lil Wayne’s cold pimp game! Lauren London is about to have a kid and now so is Nivea. SMH. Here is a letter and in it, reveals something about Ms. London’s alleged state of mind:

I was told yesterday Lauren London was at lost for words today after finding out that her baby daddy was expecting another child yesterday. Lauren who is almost 6 months pregnant didn’t know anything about Nivea pregnancy, and found out online and was outraged. Like every other star these days, she took to her Twitter page to express how she felt. But after speaking to a family friend left the topic alone. She then decided to spend the day with her family and close friends. Lauren told her friends that she is worried if her career is over as a result of these issues. As we all know Lauren is on the pinnacle of Black Hollywood as the face of Sean John and reoccurring role in the remake of Beverly Hills 90210 on the CW. A reliable source stated that Wayne doesn’t want anything to do with Lauren.

Today Nivea called Ryan Cameron’s and confirmed that she is indeed pregnant with a boy. In fact, both of them are pregnant with Wayne’s sons. This is a really bad situation, considering that she is knocked up and the baby daddy is in love with someone else.

Lauren London can have any man in the world but she chooses to get with an engaged man… Is the recession effecting men too!!!! This makes Wayne about 4 babies up and 4 baby mamas down. I guess it is true about Wayne ” He can f*&^k any girl in this world”. Sidenote… I really like Lauren London, she is such a sweet and caring person. I hate to see this happen to her. I hope this is an eye opener and she’ll come back from this stronger than ever. P.S. Lauren hit me on twitter… [source]

FLO RIDA CANCELS CANADA?Maybe Flo Rida has never been to Canada! If he did, he wouldn’t have cancelled a recent show there with out telling them why. Actually, I am hearing that the little town of Salmon Arm, BC in Canada was supposed to have Flo Rida perform an all-ages show on TODAY (Monday June 15th) From the saddened fans, I’m gathering that no reason was offered for this one. Then, he was also supposed to do a gig  in Vancouver and then in Nanaimo, BC.  No good! Anyway, the show in Salmon Arm was nearly sold out….not enuff for the Flo Man!

MY DAILY TWO SENSE

PEACE to all the good people out there in the world. I know the world revolves off conflict, beef and whatever, but I had a great weekend with my family and friends. Very simple, very simple, but just what I needed after a long weekend. So, I just wanted to say WHAT’S UP!?! Anyway, this is my lite rumors. I’m getting up and will be adding more in a few! Thanks, fam!

DRAKE – AMBER SHOWS UP TO THE VIDEO Over the weekend, Drake was shooting the video for “Best I Ever Had” in Brooklyn, New York City. From what I understand, the club scene was one of the ones that was going down. Doesn’t ever video have to have a club scene? Anyway, from what I heard Amber Rose was over there at the video shoot. Oh, who am I fooling, here is the pic.

Kanye is directing the video as well, which is pretty much confirmed. Hopefully, Kid Cudi is still remembered from  ‘Ye.

Shout out to Yungfab!

WANDA AND SHENEHAH?

I have an interesting rumor for all your people that are fans of Martin Lawrence and Jamie Foxx. Well, fans, there is a rumor that Jamie Foxx and Martin Lawrence have shot a treatment/pilot for a Wanda/Shenehah sitcom! That would be totally bonkers for two comedic cross-dressers (not dissing). “You so crazy!”

SIGNS THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN END

Craigslist is not to solicit crimes! But, that is just what a North Carolina husband did. He tried to use the list to find a man to find a man that would rape his own wife at their home. WHAT? OH and he found a person to do the deed. The 25-year-old Kannapolis man now stares at first-degree rape and other related charges. She was raped right there in their bedroom at knifepoint – as her husband watched. Police were suspicious of the mess after there were no signs of forced entry or break in. The crazy husband was jailed on $200,000 bond and they are still looking into the man that did the actually raping. What is wrong with people?

Knockout Nation: Cotto Escapes Clottey, Mayweather-Marquez Postponed, Klitschko

Cotto Wins Controversial Decision

With a gushing, cut eye and a determined foe walking him down nearly every round, Puerto Rico’s Miguel Cotto (34-1, 27 KOs) escaped Madison Square Garden Saturday night (June 13) with a disputed split decision win over Ghana’s Joshua Clottey (35-3, 20 KOs).

The Ghanaian asserted control in round one behind a stiff jab that repeatedly broke through Cotto’s guard. The Puerto Rican champion struggled to land any significant shots early, but hit bank as the round concluded with a short, counter jab that scored a balance knockdown on Clottey.

The challenger cursed himself for his mental mistake, knowing that the 10-8 round could possibly cost him a decision. In rounds two and three Clottey went to work, clipping Cotto constantly by doubling and occasionally tripling the left hook to the body and head. Cotto attempts to retaliate were unsuccessful, as he could not break Clottey’s guard even with short, flashy hook combinations. Further compounding Miguel’s problem was a hard accidental headbutt on the inside which opened a jagged, bleeding cut over his left eye.

By the 4th, Clottey was regularly utilizing the uppercut, the main punch that proved to be Cotto’s downfall in his sole loss to Antonio Margarito. As a confused Cotto continued to flurry at his challenger’s guard, Clottey would time him with chopping overhand rights on the bleeding eye. Another left uppercut from Clottey seemed to seal the round, but the Ghanaian allowed Cotto to flurry in the last 30 seconds which may have swung the card for judges swayed by the raucous Puerto Rican crowd.

Disaster nearly struck for Joshua Clottey in the fifth. After bloodying Cotto’s eye again and forcing him to retreat, Clottey was pushed hard to the canvas following an awkward corner tie-up. The challenger hit the canvas and immediately complained to the ref of knee damage. Aware that a retirement would result in a TKO loss, Clottey gingering walked off the injury but favored it the rest of the way. Despite this, the blood flow from Cotto’s eye prevented him from capitalizing, as this time Clottey flurried hard to close the stanza.

The six proved to a great comeback round for Cotto. Perhaps due to fatigue or the leg injury, Clottey surprisingly channeled Ali for his version of the rope a dope, and lay in the corner while Cotto unloaded an obscene amount of power shots to the head and body. Referee Arthur Mercante, Jr watched closely, since at times it appeared Clottey was being hurt by the punches. However, once Clottey’s face was visible it was apparent he was waiting for an opportunity to strike with counter shots. Once, he succeeded with a sneaky right that briefly stunned Cotto. However, the wounded champion had overwhelmingly outworked him with punch output to take the round.

Clottey took over again in rounds seven through nine, as Cotto’s bleeding eye made him a sitting duck for right hands. The champion’s attempts to run occasionally elicited scattered boos, but Cotto bravely kept throwing on the inside despite getting the worst of it. Clottey’s uppercuts and rights hands were visibly slowing down the cahmpion, and the crowd began to murmur nervously with Cotto in damage and demeanor reflecting the beaten warrior seen in the Margarito fight.

The tenth round was slow for both men, since Cotto took to running the majority of the round. Clottey’s bad leg prevented him from sustaining any prolonged pursuit, and Cotto effectively protected his eye with flickering punches before dancing away. Clottey’s attempt to steal the round in the last 30 seconds backfired when Cotto perfectly timed him with two counter left hooks. Clottey snickered at the shots, but the round was close enough to have gone either way on those last two punches.

The remaining championship rounds favored Cotto, who at least regularly threw punches while Clottey was content to follow him around. Although the majority of Cotto’s shots were being picked off, he controlled distance and prevented Clottey from enacting any type of significant offense to close the bout.

As expected, each man felt he did enough to win the decision after the final bell sounded. Still, their faces showed much concern with how the judges interpreted their performances. The final scorecards read 113-114, 115-112, and an absurd 116-111 for Cotto, who retained his WBO welterweight title.

“I just think I need to rest a little bit,” Cotto explained to HBO in his post-fight interview. “[After] nine weeks of training, I just want to rest a little bit. And then we can talk with the company [about who I should fight next].”

Clottey was disappointed in the verdict, and felt he was the victim of a hometown decision against a bigger, more viable star.

“I don’t expect this decision. I fought my heart out,” Clottey stated. “I’m chasing him, he’s running…So what does a guy have to do to win the fight? I won the fight. As soon as the decision went long [to score], I knew something was going to happen. I want a rematch.”

When questioned about his sudden low punch output in the later rounds, Clottey rationalized that he was being cautious of getting caught again for a flash knockdown.

“Cotto is a tough fighter, I have to take my time,” he stated. “He’s throwing one shot at a time, so I have to be careful when I’m coming in. So it’s not like I’m not throwing punches. Whatever he’s throwing to me I’m blocking.”

Although exciting, the fight was likely frustrating for fans of both men. In Cotto, we saw the same issues that have beleaguered him recent bouts such as bad defense when moving backwards (especially against uppercuts) and becoming somewhat shellshocked when faced with educated pressure. With Clottey, we again saw a lack of killer instinct down the stretch. A rematch is definitely warranted (I had Clottey winning), but likely won’t happen as their promoter Bob Arum is still fixated on pairing Cotto with Manny Pacquiao, in part to avoid having to work with Golden Boy for a Mayweather-Pacquiao megafight.

But with the damage Cotto took on Saturday, it’s unlikely he’ll be ready by October or November to face Pacquiao. And to his credit, Pacquiao has made it clear he wants Mayweather by the end of this year.

For Clottey, he’ll likely have to look at a fighter like Luis Collazo or Carlos Quintana to get his name back in the mix.

Mayweather-Marquez Off for July 18

The highly anticipated return of Floyd Mayweather Jr has been pushed back due to a rib injury the former champ sustained in training camp.

The unfortunate news was verified on Sunday (June 14) by Mayweather himself from his Las Vegas training headquarters.

“I am extremely disappointed that this fight has to be postponed,” Mayweather explained. “I was training very hard and looking forward to getting back in the ring on July 18th.”

Lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez was not happy with the news, but remained hopeful that his showdown with the six-time champion would come off soon.

“I was very disappointed to hear the news about the fight being postponed,” said Marquez in a statement from his Mexico training camp. “I will remain focused, in shape and ready to fight whenever the fight is rescheduled for.”

At press time, neither HBO nor the fighters could confirm a proposed reschedule date.

Hopefully, fans may win out and see this fight rescheduled for regular HBO instead of PPV.

Klitschko- Chagaev This Weekend

Due to challenger David Haye pulling out with a back injury, HBO has decided not to broadcast the heavyweight unification match between WBO and IBF champion Wladimir Klitschko, and WBA titleholder Ruslan Chagaev.

Many expect the new fight to be another mundane Klitschko title defense. However, David Haye will be in attendance in hopes of enticing either Vitali or Wladimir to face him.

Unfortunately, neither fight would come off this year if either Klitschko agrees. Wladimir is obligated to make a mandatory defense in September against Alexander Povetkin, while the WBC organization has scoffed at the notion of letting Vitali defend their belt against Haye.

With that said, David Haye represents the most lucrative fight for either brother in the 2009 heavyweight division. No other fight will give them much recognition outside of their native Germany, so I fully expect David Haye to eventually get his shot.

In the meantime, he’s made it known that he’s looking to get back in the ring by September. To further build his heavyweight credentials, he’ll need to seek out a “safe” name like a James Toney to build himself in the States. The press conferences alone would be classic.

Throwback Fight of the Week: Lennox Lewis vs. Andrew Golota (October 4, 1997)

In honor of Lennox Lewis’ recent induction into the Boxing Hall of Fame, we’ll take a look at one of the most dominant performances of his ring career.

In 1997, “Foul Pole” Andrew Golota was seen as the premier contender of the heavyweight division. He had effectively ended Riddick Bowe’s career as a top fighter 1996, courtesy of two prolonged, vicious beatings. But amazingly, Golota lost both fights simply because he could not stop landing low blows.

He would get a chance to prove his worth with a WBC title shot against Lennox Lewis. Many experts viewed this fight at 50-50 because of Lewis’ knockout loss in 1994 to Oliver McCall.

The fight itself was a massacre, as Golota froze in fear after tasting the power of Lewis’ right hand. Lewis easily blinded Golota with hard jabs before dropping him at the 2:00 mark with a combination of right and left hooks to the head.

Golota made it to his feet, but cowered in the corner before surrendering to the canvas after a series of right hands.

Lennox Lewis would go on to make 8 more defenses of the heavyweight title, and post wins over Evander Holyfield, Mike Tyson, and Vitali Klitschkko before retiring in 2003 with a record of 41-2-1, 32 KOs.

Andrew Golota continues to fight to this day, but has never been able to overcome the best fighters of his resume, losing to Lennox Lewis, Mike Tyson, John Ruiz, Lamon Brewster, Michael Grant, and drawing with Chris Byrd. After losing a November 2008 fight against Ray Austin, Andrew Golota’s record is 41-7-1, 33 KOs.

The NBA Finals Finale

We have come to the end of another National Basketball Association season. And I will go on record to say that I will miss it. Will I miss the “Where Amazing Happens” commercials? Probably not, because it’s about time that the league spearheads a new marketing campaign. Will I miss the “Most Valuable Puppets” commercials starring Lebron James and Kobe Bryant? Probably not, because Lil’ Dez rapped in the last commercial, and I’m sorry to say it but, he killed 85% of the non-puppet rappers in the game. Finally, will I miss NBA Superstars that could hit wacky half court shots during practice but takes an Epic Fail in hitting clutch shots when it counts? Probably not, because I would hope that these superstars that are not fitting their fingers for jewelry this summer will realize that nobody has footage of Kobe taking any shots from half court and look what it got him.

The Los Angeles Lakers are the NBA World Champions for 2009 and I’ll man up to say that I didn’t predict it. My prediction of the Orlando Magic winning in 6 was beginning to look pretty good until inexperience showed up. Stan Van Gundy is a great coach. However, he is no Phil Jackson. The Zen Master would never had foiled team chemistry just to give a player, whether he earned it or not, game time in the NBA Finals. When Van Gundy inserted the NBA All-Star, Jameer Nelson on the court, sitting Rafer “Skip to my Lou” Alston on the bench for long periods of time, he took the air out of a team that learned to fight together over the past four months. The Magic fought back to beat the Sixers in the first round; fought back from being down 3-2 to eliminate the Celtics; handed walking papers to the “unstoppable” Cleveland Cavaliers, just to fall on their face to the Lakers?

Phil Jackson would have made it his dying wish to have his best or most clutch player, taking the last shot in regulation; not a rookie, not a career team hopper whom last name rhymes with peaches. Phil has won his tenth championship as a coach because he sticks to what works and adjusts on the fly better than any other coach in NBA history. And if you haven’t noticed, Phil wins championships in three’s. So if you know Phil and his on court general like I do, winning two more consecutive championships is a MUST, or this one won’t even count.

So Kobe Bryant will receive his fourth ring, and first as the leader of a team. Congrats on that. There are a lot of AHH loyalists that love the sound of that. I’d like to say that you are more than just the best player in the league; you are Phil Jackson’s #1 pupil. When you realized a few years back that you didn’t have a team that could win you a ring, you took it upon yourself to shake the boat until Jerry Buss got queezy. C’mon Kobe, we both know that you weren’t going to leave the Lakers. Why would you leave a team that needed a few tweaks, for a team that you’d have to start from ground level to make a contender? Really Kobe, really? I don’t know why anybody believed your mind games anyway. I saw right through them. The Black Mamba my a**… you are the Black Phil Jackson, that’s who you are.

NEWS JUST IN: The Cleveland Cavaliers are looking into making a trade to bring Shaquille O’Neal to Loserville. Extensive research brought me to the conclusion that Cleveland gets pretty cold and Shaq, better known for his warm city choices, might take the opportunity of extending his career, he just won’t be enthused by the trips in two feet of snow to the arena. Furthermore, you already have an All-Star center in Zydrunas Ilgauskas. And you should know that Shaq will not accept a bench role (i.e. Allen Iverson). Cleveland, I have already gone on record that what you NEED is a Power Forward, not the Big Shaqtus. Damn, if you are willing to make this move, maybe the writing is on the wall that Lebron will leave Cleveland in 2010. Where are the Knicks fans at? We haven’t heard from you all year!

What will you miss about this season? Has Trevor Ariza taken that position of ‘Kobe’s Sidekick’ that was handed to Lamar Odom? Will Lil’ Dez do a song with Drake?

Grand Hustle’s “Muscle” 8 Ball MJG Honored In Memphis

8Ball MJG was honored at the annual Urban Network Music-Entertainment & Marketing Summit in Memphis, Tennessee last Saturday.

The group, natives of Memphis, was elated.

“Just getting to be honored is a blessing. 8Ball MJG don’t get nothing,” 8 Ball told AllHipHop.com jokingly. “They finally gave us something, ” concurred MJG.

In a more serious manner, 8Ball said that the honor by The Urban Network was augmented, because they were honored in the presence of other Memphis greats such as Al Bell (former chairman & co-owner of Stax Records), Willie Mitchell (Grammy-winning producer for Al Green) and radio icon Bobby O’Jay.

“Them boys are pioneers. Just to be spoken in the same breath as those cats [is an honor.] Willie Mitchell is Stax Music. Did a lot for Memphis. MJG said, “Willie Mitchell is a cool mother f***er with a cool a** sound.”

Few groups have been as criminally overlooked as 8Ball MJG, but now that the group has been signed to T.I.’s Grand Hustle, they expect to see the recognition that recognizes their legend stature.

“We stay working, but 8Ball MJG, we’re [signed to] Grand Hustle now. The album will be out in October. Just [letting] all the haters know it’s for real. 8Ball MJG is now Grand ‘Muscle.'”

They admitted that they expected a more prosperous experience than they had during their brief, one album stint with Bad Boy Records.

“Its a totally different situation. I can’t describe it in all the ways, but time will tell,” 8Ball said.

The situation at Grand Hustle is distinctive as well now that T.I. is incarcerated for various infractions related to an attempt to purchase guns and silencers.

“[T.I.] hadn’t been making our records for us and he ain’t the one that Grand Hustle gotta market and promote. Its really up to [Jason] Geter [CEO of Grand Hustle] and the rest of the staff…and us,” 8Ball continued. “T.I. needs to take his ‘vacation’ and rest his mind and we got it.”

Various groups performed at the Urban Network gala, which attracted local Memphis acts including Kia Shine. Throughout the weekend, other acts like Pretty Ricky and West Coast rapper Spice1 performed as well.

Urban Network Group Inc. expanded the showcase to allow unsigned and independent artists to perform live for the music industry top execs.

Participants of the conference had the opportunity to join with decision makers in the industry to learn several layers of the industry. The company gave artists a symposium to present their creativity to the movers and shaker in the music world from major labels, publishers, distributors and others.

Motown’s Lamont Dozier Teaming With Rappers; Speaking In NYC

One of the architects of R&B and pop music is bringing his years of experience in the music business to help expand the Hip-Hop genre.

Legendary Motown producer/songwriter Lamont Dozier is planning to work with a number of rappers and producers on an upcoming project, he revealed exclusively to AllHipHop.com.

Dozier was first introduced to Hip-Hop through his two sons and later via rappers, who have sampled from his lengthy catalog.

“My attorneys told me over 150 of my songs had been sampled, bits and pieces here and there,” Lamont Dozier told AllHipHop.com. “They started showing the many people that had sample stuff of mine, Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco, Nas, Mary J. Blige, Faith Evans, 36 Mafia, Remy Ma, Big Pun, Notorious B.I.G., Tupac, Common, Just Blaze to name a few.…

“It’s flattering and I am glad,” Dozier said. “I started realizing there was an opportunity here for us to join forces, so I am going to be working with these people. And it started out because of the sampling.”

Dozier is a founding member of the hit making Holland-Dozier-Holland (H-D-H) Motown songwriting/production team, that has sold – literally – billions of records, since the late 1950’s.

He will be speaking at the 3rd Annual Master Class, which is presented by the Songwriters Hall of Fame Awards on June 16 in New York.

R&B historian/journalist Nelson George will moderate the Q&A session with Dozier.

H-D-H launched their careers at Motown, where they penned hits for The Supremes, The Four Tops, Martha Reeves & The Vandellas and others.

A split with Motown occurred in 1967 and the H-D-H collective formed the Hot Wax/Invictus labels and immediately scored hits on artists like Freda Payne, Chairmen of the Board, Dozier himself and others.

The Hot Wax/Invictus releases, as well as Dozier’s classic solo albums like Out Here On My Own and Black Bach, have been sampled throughout Hip-Hop’s history by countless producers.

On June 16, Dozier will speak and answer questions during the 3rd Annual Songwriters Hall of Fame Masters Class.

Dozier, who is a teacher the USC Thornton, said that he is looking forward to working with a new crop of artists.

“I really get excited when I hear songwriters that are good, have the passion to succeed and are in relentless pursuit of this thing,” said Dozier, who also turns 68 on June 16.

“In my classes, I talk about the passion that you must have. We are in a business where you deal with rejection everyday…but technology has always been the launching for a lot of historic stuff happening, from the day of the first atomic bomb, to the invention of the eight track. It’s limitless and there’s a lot of territory there we can all participate in.”

The Songwriters Hall of Fame Master Class takes place Tuesday (June 16) at 8:00 Pm at the Kaufman Center on West 67th Street.

At press time, there were no more details were available about Dozier’s upcoming album with rappers.
