David Banner: The Greatest Story Ever Told

It’s refreshing to hear when a rapper has more substantial lyrics in a rhyme than the typical subject matter. The man responsible for helping put Mississippi on the map has gotten really deep on us as of late.

David Banner’s fourth album, The Greatest Story Ever Told (SRC), attempts to reroute your attention to what’s going on in current events and the Hip-Hop’s involvement. He doesn’t abandon the persona that his fans have grown used to; however this album doesn’t prove to be very consistent.

“So Long” opens with Banner testifying about why our generation is filled with cowards and touches on topics from Bush to Sean Bell. He then transitions to “Suicide Doors” featuring UGK and Kandi Girl formerly of Xscape. Young Dro is sampled on the chopped up hook while Pimp C and Bun B brands the track with their distinctive verses. “9mm/Speaker,” which contradicts the opener , follows with backing by Akon; Lil Wayne stands out most on the pulsating bass driven track and amongst Snoop Dogg.

Club ready tracks like “Get Like Me” featuring Chris Brown with Yung Joc and “Shawty Say” featuring Lil Wayne, which samples a line from “Lollipop,” prove to be the highlighted radio friendly tracks. However the buck stops with “A Girl” which is all too reminiscent of the extremely played out whisper-on-the-track scheme from a few years past.

Things then slow down to a more inspirational tip with “Hold On” featuring Marcus and “Cadillac on 22’s (Part 2)” which is the follow-up to the original. While the latter sends a good message, Banner could have benefited more by keeping the singing to the pros like on “I Get By” featuring Carl Thomas. One thing noticeable on this album is that it has several guest appearances throughout which can be very distracting and takes away from an already established artist.

More stand out listings on the album include “Freedom”, an interlude where Banner speaks on how others view his people and tells them some of the things that could be done so it wouldn’t continue to be encouraged. Message inconsistency comes into play once again with “K.O.”. The bass and drum transmitting beat with the occasional synthesizers will nonetheless be a favorite to many.

All in all Banner makes an attempt to put things on a more positive inspiring note, but couldn’t seem to resist keeping some of the subject matter consistent with previous albums like his best to date, Mississippi: The Album. Its good to see that he’s been speaking up for what he believes to be the rights and wrongs in today’s culture, however he should’ve focused a little more on translating that into a more consistant offering.

Death Row Owners Respond To $25 Million Lawsuit

After completing a $24 million dollar acquisition of Death Row Records, Global Music Group was hit with a $25 million dollar lawsuit from venture capitalist Ron Goldberg, who claimed to have been illegally cut out of the deal by his partners.

In an exclusive statement to AllHipHop.com, the Global Music group disclosed their stance on the lawsuit and the details of the acquisition.

“We represent Global Music Group, Inc, a New York Corporation which was the successful bidder at the auction of the assets of the bankruptcy estates of Death Row Records, Inc., and Marion Knight, Jr,” explained Roger Muse, a partner at the Beverly Hills business and entertainment law firm of Muse Methany. “My client and its principals put up all the money necessary to make the bid and were successfully present at the Bankruptcy auction to make that successful bid.”

Muse also states that Ron Goldberg was never a member of Global Music Group, or recruited investors for the company as he alleges in his lawsuit.

“Mr. Goldberg is not a principal of Global Music Group Inc., a New York corporation, nor does he have any ownership in that company or in its assets, including the Death Row assets subject to the company’s court-approved bid,” Muse explicates. “Mr. Goldberg has apparently filed a Delaware corporation under the same name of my client; but of course anyone can file a corporation in any state under any name as long as the name is not then in use in that state by another corporation. Mr. Goldberg’s claim that it is his Delaware Global Music Group was the ‘true’ bidder of the bankruptcy assets simply has no merit.”

Goldberg’s lawsuit, filed in Superior Court, claims that the investors he recruited conspired with Global Music Group vice president Anthony Marotta to use “confidential know-how, data, techniques, and contacts” to secure the bid without his consent.

Among the investors he claimed to have recruited are president Susan Berg and Reggie Bush of RSB Investment Strategies.

Global Music Group secured the winning $24 million dollar bid for Death Row Records in June 24.

The deal was confirmed as finalized today in a statement released by Global Music Group.

The acquisition gives the company the entire Death Row Records catalog of recordings, artist’s agreements, artwork, music videos and publishing rights, all free of past debts and lawsuits.

Terminator Trailer Revealed, Common Talks Acting

The first scenes of the newest installment in the Terminator franchise were revealed to the world this week with the simultaneous international release of a teaser trailer for Terminator Salvation yesterday (July 18).

The new movie, starring rapper Common and Batman’s Christian Bale, is due in theaters May 22, 2009.

Salvation brings to life the future of which John Connor has been warned in the previous three Terminator movies.

Connor, played by Bale, assumes his role as the leader of the human resistance against Skynet.

But he finds that the future has been slightly altered from what he has been preparing for.

Common is currently in Albuquerque, New Mexico filming Terminator Salvation, his fifth appearance in a major feature film release.

He is also putting the finishing touches on his ninth studio album, Invincible Summer.

“I realize that for me to have a career in this [film], I can’t approach it from a Hip-Hop artist’s perspective,” Common told AllHipHop.com. “I’ve approached my career, my acting career, definitely as a new actor.”

The veteran emcee says that his burgeoning acting career has also had a great impact on his Hip-Hop music.

“I feel more free now that I’m doing more movies and stuff, to just put out music that I love and I believe in and get it out there,” stated Common, who has landed high profile roles in American Gangster, Wanted, Smokin Aces and others.

“It makes me do Hip-Hop even more for the love now,” Common revealed. “When you’re making music and you’re like okay this is my job, I love what I’m doing and I always had dreamed of this, but this is how I pay my bills and take care of my daughter, and this is how I’m able to pay my car note or whatever it may be. When you’re creating at the end of the day, you can try to remove everything from your mind that this is your job, but somewhere in the back of your mind you still know that you gotta do something that’s viable to the market for you to survive.”

Invincible Summer is due in stores in September.

Produced by Mr. DJ and the Neptunes.

The album is enjoying an early online buzz due to the early release of it’s first two singles Announcement” and “Universal Mind Control.”

AHH Stray News: Hip-Hop Hits The DNC

At least two high-profile events surrounding this year’s Democratic National Convention in Denver are expected to feature Hip-Hop acts, early reports indicate. The RIAA is said to be courting Kanye West as the headlining act for a celebration of U2 front man Bono’s One Campaign. Also expected to appear at the DNC are Wyclef Jean and N.E.R.D., who will both entertain crowds attending MTV’s Rock The Vote bash. The 2008 Democratic National Convention takes place in late August, with festivities at the Pepsi Center from the 25th to the 27th, and a grand finale at INVESCO Field at Mile High on August 28, during which Senator Barack Obama will officially accept the Democratic Party’s nomination to represent the party in the presidential elections in November.

AJ Johnson: Self Worth and Wellness Coaching – A Convo with Tha Hip Hop Doc

I read about celebrity fitness experts all the time. On a

regular basis, some muscle-bound man or woman trainer poses with a

muscle bound man or woman celebrity promising us the same results if you

just buy his/her book, protein drink, or some pill or potion.

Potentially dangerous exercises are taught via videotapes

and on websites without reliable medical research. Routinely I see patients who

get hurt performing exercises the wrong way or who experience side effects from

supplements that are not FDA approved.

Then enters the gorgeous, talented and “shredded” AJ

Johnson. A vision of perfect health from her skin tone to her physique – and

it’s all the result of her hard work, dedication and spiritual beliefs.

When I contacted AJ, she was doing what she does on a

regular basis – educating and teaching others about healthy living. Let’s meet

AJ Johnson and find out how she has been successful not only in her acting

career, but as a life coach to many celebrities and non-celebrities.

AllHipHop.com: AJ,

where are you?

AJ Johnson: I’m

in my in car in Chicago and I pulled over in front of the John Hancock Center

to talk to you for as long as you want. [laughs]

AllHipHop.com: What’s

happening in Chi-town?

AJ Johnson: I am here for a number of things, but primarily

I’m doing a seminar and fitness demonstration at the Lake Shore Athletic Club

and an “Explore the Flavor of Health” event with Glaxo Smith Kline (GSK) who

I’ve done a lot with over the past year or two.

AllHipHop.com: I’ve never heard of that AJ. Tell me a little

more about GSK and this event.

AJ Johnson: “Explore the Flavor of Health” is a health fair

sponsored by GSK, which will be held at the YMCA on 63rd and Stoney

here in Chicago. I am on GSK’s Multicultural Council and I have been very

active with them. Last year I did some promotions for their newly released

weight loss medication Alli. I have been combining their mission with my

mission, coming together for ultimately a bigger mission, which is to promote

healthier living, to teach people about their bodies, and to be an advocate for

the health and wellness of others by just being me!

AllHipHop.com: You mentioned the over the counter drug Alli®

which can help us with weight loss. Do you think over the counter medicines

like this are a cop-out for weight loss?

AJ Johnson: Ultimately, you have to modify your

lifestyle. Nothing beats good nutrition, exercise, and proper rest. Using Alli®

is an aid, but not a substitute for modifying your behavior. What are your

thoughts on Alli® Doc?

AllHipHop.com: In combination with exercise and diet, it’s a

great drug.  Alli® is safe and if the

patient understands how it works, the benefits of weight loss and maintaining

that weight loss can be significant. So, how did you get in to this health

thing AJ?  I mean, many of us are

familiar with your wonderful roles in movies like The Inkwell, Baby Boy and

House Party but, I have to admit, I

had no idea you were so involved in health, wellness and personal training.

AJ Johnson: Doc, a lot of people did not know. I encourage

you and the AllHipHop family to become a participant in my wellness movement. Check

me out on the web at www.theAJzone.com

and learn more about what I do. I also want to correct you on one thing,

however. What I do is not training individuals, but it is advocating healthy

living!  Most people think its just

fitness because of my physique and that’s a compliment, but it is really

healthy living.

You cannot do this without a healthy mind, body, and spirit.

Consistency, having a great nutritional program, loving life, being disciplined

and not procrastinating are what I am all about. These traits carry over into

every facet of my life, and as much as Hollywood has given me a platform, my

Hollywood friends started coming to me for help asking me how they could be as

happy and as energetic as they saw me.

AllHipHop.com: Wow! That’s what’s up. But, for those old and

new fans of yours who don’t know, let me list for them a few of your clients: Terrell

Owens, Stevie Wonder, Damon Dash, Gabrielle Union, Boris Kudjoe and his wife

Nicole Ari Parker, and John Singleton to name a few. You have some heavy

hitters on this list.  Some people would

think that you would only “train” females. And by the way, how do you train a

Terrell Owens?

AJ Johnson:  Doc,

there you go again!

AllHipHop.com:  What?

AJ Johnson:  Using

that word “training.”  The people at my

company don’t even say or use the word training. I mean look at the list! How

do you train Gabrielle Union to do anything? How do you train Stevie Wonder to

be more dedicated? How do you train T.O. to run faster? These are individuals

at the top of their games looking for something more than just better

performance.

What I do for them is coach them; I’m a life Coach!  I just let them know that there is a”better”

for all of us. And as great as they are in their careers, there is a “better”

that everyone can be and we need to strive for that “better” and live life to

the fullest.

AllHipHop.com: Did anyone thing or person motivate you to be

so lively and energetic?

AJ Johnson: I lost my mother to cancer and literally

witnessed my father on his deathbed.  I

don’t like losing things that I love. My dad would write a saying to me in

every birthday card. Before his salutation of “Love, Daddy,” he would write, “Dance until the lights turn off.”  I honestly thought the first time I saw it in

my birthday card, that he meant for me to close the club down. [laughs]  But what I realized was that there was a much

bigger message in that statement!

AllHipHop.com: What do you mean?

AJ Johnson: The much bigger message, which is tattooed on my

ankle in French is to simply “Live life to the fullest!” Basically, I’m going

to close it down everyday and I don’t mean the club either!

AllHipHop.com: Cool! Your energy is making me want to

exercise now! So what’s an average day in the life of AJ?

AJ Johnson: Doc, I

have to send you back to the website, www.theajzone.com.  Everything I do is there. The website is

written in first person, and I have a team that helps me tremendously to

continue to build and grow the site as well as keeping the information current.

The site provides my clients and visitors with tools that will make them happy,

healthy and energetic!

AllHipHop.com: And you update your portion of the site how

often?

AJ Johnson: Weekly, daily:- it just depends what’s going on

and there is a lot going on!  There are

so many sections on the site that can help us. I discuss what motivates me,

provide daily words, wellness plans, and success stories. You name it, and if

it has something to do with maintaining a happy and healthy lifestyle, The AJ

Zone is addressing these very things.

AllHipHop.com: What about stress? Actress, life coach,

marriage…  How do you do it all?

AJ Johnson: First of

all, you know I’m not married. [laughs]

AllHipHop.com: Hmmm…  Then I still have a chance

AJ? Need to tone up a little… (doing pushups between words)

AJ Johnson: Doc, you are a mess! [laughs] I try to avoid

stress.  Stress… that’s the killer. As

African-Americans, we’ve got high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, just to

name a few, and we are dying earlier than other ethnic groups. One of the

things you said to me was you were sick and tired of young people dying from

preventable and treatable diseases. Well, so am I!  I don’t want to go anywhere, and I don’t want

people I love to die as a result of unhealthy living.

No, my parents are no longer living, but I learned a lot

from them while they were alive. All I’m doing is accepting my life purpose and

the mission God has given me to help other people with what I’ve learned. This

is not a job to me, this is a lifestyle. The reason you have not seen me in

movies lately is because I have been traveling, spreading the message about

healthy living. It’s very obvious that our country is about to experience great

changes and I want to be a part of that change, especially when it comes to

health. I also want to do it stress free!

AllHipHop.com: How do we make changes in our lives? How do

we get started?

AJ Johnson: Start small. I started with some minor lifestyle

changes and over time they became not just routine, but essential for living. I

am excitedly living naturally now.

AllHipHop.com: All natural? Come on AJ! Not an occasional

burger from a fast food restaurant?

AJ Johnson: Yes Doc, all natural! All the health care

products, hair care and skin care products are all natural- not chemical,

completely natural.

AllHipHop.com: That

is great and studies support that living natural is better for our bodies. What

advice would you give to young people who have a sense of invincibility and

think that they are exempt from health problems?

AJ Johnson: First of all, none of us are invincible or

exempt from health problems. We can, however, reduce our risk of some medical

problems and live better lives. The most general and important message I can

give them is to truly believe that there is a “better” and that the “better”

comes from the choices one makes.

AllHipHop.com: You have given us all some great information

today. Is there anything else you would like to add before we bounce and I head

to the gym?

AJ Johnson: My final words to AllHipHop and to you Doc would

be to love yourself.  None of what I’m

saying will do any good if you don’t have self worth.

Movie Review: The Dark Knight

If you’re gonna see The Dark Knight here’s some advice: Don’t bring the kids. This ain’t no cartoon.

I don’t how in the hell it got a PG-13 rating. The sh*t gave me nightmares, and I

ain’t no kid. Secondly, see it on the IMAX. The aerial scenes and fight scenes

are crazy. While the story line is a little convoluted, the action and

characters make you forget about it. Director Christopher Nolan’s sequel

to Batman Begins is the opposite of Joel Schumaker’s Batman and Robin, which was a like a Broadway musical

without the music. The movie is also nothing like its predecessor, which spent

way too much time developing Batman and not enough time showcasing him. The

Dark Knight is a grimly realistic modern portrait of Gotham’s great hero.

The movie deals with issues like police corruption, money laundering, terrorism

and vigilante morality. Nolan, who wrote and directed Memento, offers a

way more complex take on good and evil than any previous superhero

movie.Much has been made about Heath Ledger’s final performance as The

Joker. I’ve heard things like he’s better than Hannibal Lecter or Jack Nicholson’s version of the same character. Neither of these are

true…To read the rest of the review, go to: http://www.theurbandaily.com/movies/article/the-dark-knight-enters-the-real-world Also, be sure to check out our AllHipHop Batman movie tribute here:https://allhiphop.com/stories/lifestylefilm/archive/2008/07/16/20300582.aspx

50 Cent Passes Drug Test, Allowed To See Son

Hip-Hop star 50 Cent passed a drug test yesterday (July 18) and was granted more time with his son, 11-year-old son, Marquis.

50 Cent and his former girlfriend Shaniqua Tompkins have been feuding with each other in court and in the media, over the ownership of a $2.4 million mansion in Dix Hills, Long Island.

The mansion was burned to the ground in May in a suspicious fire as Tompkins, Marquis and others were sleeping in the house.

Tompkins has accused 50 Cent of orchestrating the fire to avoid her gaining ownership of the contested residence, while 50 Cent has claimed the Tompkins is preventing him to see his son.

According to Newsday, the rapper has not seen his son since April.

“She wants Marquise to have access with his father, but with safety precautions in place,” Tompkins lawyer Paul Catsandonis said.

In addition to battling over the mansion, the pair have filed lawsuit against each other in relation to the mansion burning incident.

In June, 50 Cent filed a $20 million dollar defamation lawsuit against Tompkins for accusing him of burning down the mansion, while Tompkins countered with a $50 million dollar lawsuit.

Tompkins was also granted a temporary restraining order against 50 Cent, which required the rapper to forfeit any guns or weapons in his possession and he must also be at “curbside” when he picks up or drops of Marquis.

The Last Word: Keri Hilson Says No to Sex with Timbaland and Polow Da Don, Rihanna Gets Tattooed, and Chris Brown Bones With TI!!!

What’s good, folks? We have arrived at the end of another week. From the New Yorker catching heat over running a controversial cartoon cover of Barack and Michelle Obama to Anheuser-Busch being sold to a Belgian company to baseball fans taking in this year’s all-star game, it was another active five days. Congratulations to Black Eyed Peas member Taboo, who tied the knot Saturday (July 12) with his fiancé Jaymie Dizon and Angelina Jolie, who finally gave birth to twins Knox Leon and Vivienne Marcheline. Shout out to the US Postal Service for releasing a set of postage stamps honoring vintage Black cinema, my cousin Jerome, who will jump the broom this weekend when he marries his girlfriend Na’Kisha and the sounding boards for staying cool as the summer heats up. For your information…the Last Word for the week ending July 18, 2008. 1. Keri Hilson, Solange and Teyana Taylor Ponder L-Boogie, Dating Mentors and That Other Knowles R&B may have its issues, but Keri Hilson, Solange Knowles and Teyana Taylor are out to blaze their own unique path in a crowded genre. One that doesn’t include intimate episodes with mentors like Timbaland and Polow Da Don. “Oh hell no. I never considered them for a second,” said Hilson regarding the possibility of “shacking up” with her production partners. Hilson graces the cover of Rap-Up Magazine’s Summer 2008 issue with fellow “Brave New Girls” Knowles and Taylor. “Firstly, because I never mix business with pleasure. I’ve never dated anybody I had to work with ever. So you’ll never see that. Not now, not in the past, not in the future.” With Taylor, the inspiration to succeed comes from Lauryn Hill, as she cites the revered diva’s confidence and voice among the things she admires most. “From her being a rapper and a singer to the stuff she talks about,” said the entertainer, who is aware of those who compare her to Lauryn as she admitted that she tends to “get so happy and start blushing when people say that I am like her.” Although she loves her big sister dearly, Solange feels that her association with Beyonce and her family is, at this point, “starting to hurt me more than help me because my family is sort of known as the new age Huxtables.” “We’re the clean-cut girls. But I got married at 17, had a kid at 17, the singer shared. “Ever since I was younger, I always considered myself to be into more artistic things than [Beyoncé]. People just hear the [Knowles] name and they just put a stamp on it automatically.”Rap-Up‘s Summer 2008 issue is on newsstands now and online at Rap-Up.com. 2. Chris Brown has a Bone to Pick With T.I. Chris Brown may be thought of as a good guy in the music world, but the 19-year-old crooner is turning over a new leaf for a new movie. Brown, who was last seen alongside Lauren London in This Christmas, is in final negotiations to star with rapper T.I., Matt Dillon and the Wire’s Idris Elba in the film Bone Deep. The John Lussenhop-directed thriller centers around a group of criminals who plan a major heist at a money depot as they are pursued by two detectives. Brown, who is also in talks to executive produce the feature, will play one of the members of the heist crew. In addition to Bone Deep, fans can also check for the 19-year-old crooner in the sports drama Phenom. Brown will portray a basketball star that turns pro after high school who later finds out he is the illegitimate son of an aging NBA star. Both films are scheduled to be released in 2009. 3. J.Lo Channels Diddy for Triathlon Never let it be said that a new baby will keep Jennifer Lopez down. The singer/actress is taking a page out of ex-beau Sean “Diddy” Combs’ book as she trains for a triathlon. The move comes eight months after J. Lo gave birth to twins Max and Emme. According to husband Marc Anthony, J. Lo is going all out for the event by biking, running and swimming. Although he supports her fully, don’t expect Anthony to be running with his famous spouse in October as he told Extra, “I’ll be on my Segway (encouraging her).” With Jennifer prepping for the triathlon, it makes me think of what might’ve been. It could’ve been a sight to see Jennifer and Diddy running together in that marathon the mogul ran a few years back if they would’ve stayed together. One small step for us, one giant sprint for Hip-Hop. 4. Michael Jackson Hips the New Kids to His Comeback The New Kids on the Block are making sure people know that they are back on the scene, as media sources report that the ‘80s boy band has been secretly meeting with that other music phenomenon, Michael Jackson, at his home in Las Vegas. The two have been in talks to record a song for NKOTB’s forthcoming comeback album as well as Jackson’s own long-awaited comeback disc. “He has been in the studio for months. He wants to create an amazing album and won’t release anything until he is totally satisfied,” a source told The Daily Mirror about Jackson. “He’s a musical genius and record bosses want to leave him to develop his magic. It will be down to him when it is released.” NKOTB’s meeting with Michael comes after news leaked that the group hit the studio with New Edition to record a track for the forthcoming New Kids album. The five man collective – who are set to work with Timbaland and want collaborate with Madonna – join Kanye West, will.i.am, Ne-Yo and Akon, as those rumored to be working with the King of Pop. Looks like the ‘80s are on the way back. Still, with being dogged by child abuse charges over years ago, you would think that Michael would steer clear of anything with the name “kids” attached to it. Guess not. Don’t be surprised if Donnie, Joey and the boys start dropping revelations about those “private” recording sessions that were supposed to be between them and Mike. Stay tuned to see who had the right stuff.5. Rihanna Gets Tatted for Charity Fresh from opening for Kanye West, Rihanna is making good news as the new face of Gucci’s new Tattoo Heart ad campaign. The venture will feature the 20-year-old vocalist wearing limited-edition Gucci tattoo-heart-motif products, according to WWD, which added that 25 percent of sales from the products will be donated to UNICEF. And while she’s doing her thing for charity and music, Rihanna recently added a new tattoo to her person. The Insider reports that the marking is actually the birth date of her best friend and assistant, Melissa Forde, in Roman numerals. “Me and my best friend got the same thing,” Rihanna told the women of The View as she added that Forde returned the gesture by getting her famous friend’s birth date in Roman numerals tattooed on her. “I love her so much. More than some of my family. She’s a blood sister.” Blood sister, ha? If that’s the case with her best friends, makes you wonder what show of loyalty she’s got for Chris Brown. Nevertheless, how about a standing ovation for RiRi’s positive endeavors? In Other Words… * Madame Tussauds has struck again. More than a week after announcing it will unveil a wax figure of singer Amy Winehouse, the museum has now come out with a wax figure of Beyonce that will reside at Madame Tussauds’ Hollywood Boulevard location with a new figure of actor Jamie Foxx. The new museum is slated to open in 2009. * Bob Marley fans can get more of the singer to enjoy, as rare concert footage is now available for download purchase at http://www.wolfgangsvault.com, a music and memorabilia site. * Looks like whatever doesn’t land you in jail or six feet under attracts more work. Although she’s not in a “frame of mind” to make music these days, Amy Winehouse is being sought after by rapper Busta Rhymes, who has expressed a desire to get in the studio with the embattled diva.  * Natalie Cole has been diagnosed with Hepatitis C. According to reports, she discovered she had the disease during a routine doctor’s visit. Doctor’s suspect that Cole, who they say is responding good to her medication and is now virus negative, may have gotten Hepatitis C from her past drug use.* Earth, Wind and Fire will release its first album of original tunes in four years. The three-disc collection will be comprised of a CD of original material, a live CD and a concert DVD. The group will begin work in October on the project, which they hope to release in 2009.

LL Cool J: The AllHipHop Interview

LL Cool J is a man of many firsts. James Todd Smith was the first artist on the house that Rush and Rick built. Uncle L was also one of the first successful rapper turned actors, and pioneered what is now an industry staple, the chick record.  With 12 albums released, movies, books, clothing, television shows, among other ventures, one has to wonder, what does Hip-Hop really have to offer Mr. Smith? With an industry seemingly changing for the worse by the day, and so much already accomplished, many people wonder what makes the Queens, NY native still pick up that mic. But what people don’t understand is when you’ve been in love with something since you were 16 years old, it’s impossible to let it go. And nothing, no movie, book, clothing deal, or TV show can ever take the place of your first true love. To LL Cool J, the upcoming release of Exit 13 is more than just his 13th album. It’s a love letter to the music that made him great and a declaration to every fan and naysayer, Uncle L is still here.   AllHipHop.com: Your career spans over two decades. While everyone can agree that nobody is perfect, you’ve maintained an almost spotless image over the years. Is that a conscious lifestyle decision or some just damn good PR work?LL Cool J: [laughs] It’s just how I live. I’m not trying to be perfect. I’m not trying to get up on a pedestal and do the pedestal thing. That’s how I live my life. I don’t go around trying not to play myself but I don’t go around trying to either. I’m just doing me. I have a family because I chose to have a family. I never let the culture we’re involved in dictate what I would or wouldn’t do. I ran my career, I didn’t let my career run me.

“I’m not trying to recapture something I did many years ago or imitate anybody today. I’m blazing a path and a trail nobody’s ever blazed before. There’s no artist for me to follow.”

AllHipHop.com: The image we just spoke about make you incredibly marketable. With the industry being in the state it is, why not shift your focus to the film aspect of your career?LL Cool J: It’s what I love to do. That’s one thing about me. A lot of people expect you to do what they think is going to be most lucrative for you.  I really turned down a lot of movies during this period. I turned down like seven or eight movies because I really just wanted to focus on this project. A lot of people want to just count the money and tell me what I should be doing but what people don’t understand is that in life, you have to do what makes your soul feel good. You can’t sell your soul to go after the quick buck. I don’t make decisions based on money I base them on what I love to do. I love Hip-Hop and me doing Hip-Hop doesn’t mean I’m trying to be 19. I’m not confused, I don’t have things twisted. When I put a hat on backwards I’m not trying to recapture something. I know who I am. I’m comfortable with who I am, my age and my status. I love our music and I love creating music. Anytime I can go do a mixtape with a guy like Kay Slay or drop freestyles and have the Internet buzzing that tells me that what I feel and what I have to say is still relevant. When I can go out on [the] Summer Jam stage and get the reception I received that shows me that I’m relevant, so it’s justified. I’m not one of these guys trying to cling on to something I had before. I’m not trying to recapture something I did many years ago or imitate anybody today. I’m blazing a path and a trail nobody’s ever blazed before. There’s no artist for me to follow. And the artists that came after me looked at Russell then looked at me and decided they wanted to be a hybrid of both. My desire was to be an artist. That was what I wanted to do with my career at that point. My desire was to make great music and that’s something I was able to do. I want to show people I still have the ability to do that and I’m going to have fun doing it.

“I know that I introduced the

campaign towards the girls to cats back in ’89. I had the panthers and

the rope chains and the champagne on the album covers. I been doing

this for years since back when me and Jam Master Jay was battling over

who had the biggest chain.”

AllHipHop.com: You are responsible for creating the now obligatory “chick friendly” record. Do you feel that guys give you your proper credit for finding and capitalizing on that particular niche?LL Cool J: I think that people give me credit but let’s just call it what it is, when you’re a guy that a lot of females talk about cats aren’t going to give you but so much credit. We can sit here and pretend that we don’t know that but, the reality is if there wasn’t so much of that female appeal, and it’s definitely a blessing, but the amount of female appeal is definitely what keeps fellas from giving it all the way up. But they listen to them freestyles and they hear them rhymes connecting so they know what it is. I’m okay with that because we all have our paths that we choose. I’m comfortable with that. I know that I introduced the campaign towards the girls to cats back in ’89. I had the panthers and the rope chains and the champagne on the album covers. I been doing this for years since back when me and Jam Master Jay was battling over who had the biggest chain. When you’re in that position you kind of have to take it with a grain of salt. That’s part of the responsibility of being first. It comes with the territory. My thing has always been to focus on making great music and loving that. I never really wanted to go outside of that. Once people realize I’ve been completely satisfied and fulfilled with what I’ve done with my career thus far, I think that they’d have a better idea of who LL is.AllHipHop.com: What are some of the misconceptions you’ve dealt with?LL Cool J: Many people seem to have this picture in their minds that I had all these other things I wanted to do but in reality all I wanted to do was my 10 albums then three after that. I’ve done what I wanted to do. A lot of people were saying, “LL wants a job at Def Jam.” LL Cool J does not want to work at a record company. I don’t know why people think I’d want that. It’s not attractive to me to have to wake up at the crack of dawn to drive into Manhattan at 8:30 in the morning. Most of the people that have to do that everyday don’t want to do it. What makes people think LL wants to work at Def Jam? People got things so twisted then came back around and were saying LL is bitter. I’m a 40 year old multi-millionaire who owns his own catalog, done movies, just made the biggest clothing line deal in the history of Hip-Hop culture so what am I bitter about. People need to realize you don’t need to live your life being compared to other people. And people sometimes feel those same comparisons about me. They think I want to be somebody else when I just want to be LL.AllHipHop.com: They say you have to lose something in order to gain something. With all that you’ve been able to achieve in your career, can you think of anything you lost or any moments that made that you regret being in this industry?LL Cool J: I don’t have any regrets about that. I’ve loved it since I was nine years old. At 12 I was writing, 14 I was making a record and at 16 we started Def Jam. I never regretted being out there. I have been frustrated. I’ve had times when I wanted to quit but that’s a part of being great. You have to live up to those challenges. Michael Jordan got frustrated, he had to play with the flu a couple times but he did it. It’s a part of life. The key is just to believe in yourself. You have to believe in yourself when no one else believes in you.  There’s always going to be people around you to tell you that you can’t do something. When I first started I would tell guys I’m going to be a rap star and they used to tell me I was crazy. The first time I ever rapped in public a girl came up to me and told me I can’t rap. I didn’t let that frustrate me. You can’t expect everybody to be your fan. I love what I do. I love the culture, I love the music and I do it from the heart.

“I’m not going to have to blame anybody because my album is

going to win… You’ll never hear me say I never

made a bad album or a wack record because everybody has to someday.

Somebody somewhere thought that single or that album was wack homie.”

AllHipHop.com: The age of our favorite MCs is becoming an issue. Most of the younger guys coming into the game feel that at a certain point the torch must be passed. What’s your take on that statement?LL Cool J: One thing that people have to understand in Hip-Hop, the thing we have to be clear about is; because you continue to make rap music it does not mean you are trying to be younger than you are. They have to understand that I will not stop liking rap music because my birthday passed. I know, for some, that might be difficult to believe but a birthday does not mean you can no longer like Hip-Hop. That’s the thing for me. AllHipHop.com: So when guys say Jay-Z has had his time and he needs to fall back and let some of the newer artist have their shine you defend him?LL Cool J: I’ve heard them say that here and there, and I’m not looking to defend Jay on any level but, I don’t see any reason for him to stop making music. These guys just have to understand that you need to prove you’re better. This isn’t sports. I’m not on the court trying to mix it up with the young boys. I’m solidifying a legacy and making great music for people who appreciate LL Cool J. It’s not about guys getting older and trying to capture somebody younger. Just do you. That’s what your focus should be. If you get it in, you spit crazy, then you should just focus on making the hottest records you can. Focus on making the greatest material you can and just really bang cats out. That’s what you should focus on. You should not focus on why guys are 10, 13, 14 albums later, still making music. That’s a waste of time.AllHipHop.com: This album, Exit 13, is you’re 13th. What does that mean to you?LL Cool J: I think that this whole project, the mixtape, the album, the excitement and the energy that comes with them…it’s what I live for. I live for these moments.  I laugh when I see guys say, “Now who’s he going to blame when his album flops.” I’m not going to have to blame anybody because my album is going to win. I’m going to succeed. You’ll never hear me say I never made a bad album or a wack record because everybody has to someday.  Somebody somewhere thought that single or that album was wack homie. But I’m coming from the heart with this music and I’m doing what I got to do. And if you can’t understand that then you need to just click onto another site. Allhiphop.com: What was your process when making the record? I heard you worked with 50 Cent for most of the project?LL Cool J:  I did a whole album with 50, I did an album by myself, then I went and did another album by myself. I decided to use like two or three songs from the album I did with 50, one from the second album I did by myself, and the rest is all new material. 50 definitely inspired and motivated me. Watching him work made me hungry again but, it was also important for me to come out with an LL Cool J album that doesn’t sound like I’m trying to be 50 Cent. I’m not doing that.

“There were a lot of, for lack of a better word, doe-dos out there that were like. ‘LL is going to sign to G-Unit.’ I don’t know what these guys are thinking. Why would I work for 20 years to sign to another artist?”

AllHipHop.com: Now that you mention it, people thought you were signing to G-Unit once word got out you two were working together.LL Cool J:  [laughs] There were a lot of, for lack of a better word, doe-dos out there that were like. “LL is going to sign to G-Unit.” I don’t know what these guys are thinking. Why would I work for 20 years to sign to another artist? I don’t know where the stupidness came from. I don’t think they understand who they’re dealing with and the reason I’m here. I just wanted to make good music. 50 definitely motivated me, pushed me, and inspired me a lot. I go a song on the album with him and a couple songs that we just worked on together. It sounds good man. AllHipHop.com: You’ve been rhyming for over 20 years and have maintained your relevance through constantly adapting to your surroundings musically. Is that part of the creative process or a conscious action? LL Cool J:  Well that all depends on how you look at it. To most people LL is adapting and changing over the years but LL looks at it like he’s leading. I’m not trying to imitate what’s going on today and I’m not trying to recapture yesterday. I’m trying to push the envelope. It doesn’t mean I have or always will succeed in doing that. It’s not easy and when you’re doing something for 20 something years you’re going to make some mistakes. It’s a fallacy to think that you’re never going to make a mistake that’s not a reality when you’re and artist. Everybody does it. With that being said, I just constantly look to the future. I don’t walk around with the 1995 high school championship ring on. I don’t live my life by what LL used to do. Although, in a freestyle I may have to re-educate some cats and set the stage for them so they can understand who I am but I don’t live in the past. That’s the thing that people have to understand with me. When I make music I make it from the heart. I don’t run around trying to fit in. My first record came out in 1984, I’m not following nobody. At this point who am I following? Who is there for me to follow? The guys that people are calling veterans have like 10 or 12 years. I’ve been out twice as long as some of the guys people call veterans. AllHipHop.com: You’re known for having your hand in a bunch of different pots. What else do you have going on outside of music?LL Cool J: I’m doing a lot of stuff man. I have a drama coming out on CBS as a mid-season replacement. The deal is inked and drying as I speak. I have a movie coming out with Meg Ryan. Actually, let me talk about the Sears deal. Most people have been saying, “LL is crazy. Why’s he doing a deal with Sears? He should be with Ed Hardy or Gucci or something like that.” What people fail to realize is I’m not above people. I’m not trying to disassociate myself from regular people. Everybody doesn’t have $10,000 to blow on one pair of jeans and a hoodie. Even though stuff like that sounds fly, there are people out there that work for a living that can’t afford all that. So why not partner with a company that’s trying to put fashion forward designs at affordable prices on the backs of people who don’t have the disposable income to spend at those “upscale” stores? Why wouldn’t I, a guy who is supported by regular people, support that and help make people proud to embrace that? It doesn’t make you any less aspirational to do something that affects your community in a positive way. You can do good and still be very rich and very successful. I always want to maintain my connection with my community. So the decisions I’ve made from making a song called “Around the Way Girl” to this have been based on that idea. I got a digital distribution network called www.Boomdizzle.com and that’s crazy because it’s going to give people an opportunity to get out there. Def Jam is working with me on it and it’s really going to be an exciting thing for upcoming artists. I want to help people; I want to see people make it. I’m not trying to hog the game. I want to see other people be successful, make money, and get rich. I’m okay with other people coming in and becoming legends.  AllHipHop.com: Do you feel that other veterans do enough for the up and coming artists new to the game or still trying to get in?LL Cool J: I’ll put it like this, there are two ways people can make it to the top. You can make it creatively or competitively. Competitive people get to the top then kick the ladder down or pull the ladder up so no one else can make it up. Creative people make a ladder and leave it there for others to climb. I think we, as a people, have gotten used to the competitive way where you just worry about you getting up and screw everybody else. I don’t get down like that. People are going to see me succeed in the next couple years and when they witness my success it’s going to be a lot clearer to people that you don’t have to cut everybody’s throat to succeed. You don’t have to position yourself like “I’m better than you” to be successful. Like, I don’t have to distance myself from my neighborhood. I can go to the barbershop and say what’s up to my people. I can still go to my old neighborhood and still be rich. It’s a car drive away. I’m not saying you can’t grow and develop new circles of friends as well. There’s nothing wrong with growth but remember, the taller a tree grows the deeper the roots. If not, that tree is dead. There’s no problem with evolving. We’re going to evolve, we need to evolve. We need Fortune 500 businesses but that doesn’t mean we have to abandon our people to do it.

“People don’t know I owned a piece of Def Jam but I sold it back at a certain point for a certain price. I own my catalog. Before Lyor [Cohen] and them left we did a deal and I got my full catalog. LL Cool J owns his whole body of work.”

AllHipHop.com: While we’re talking about evolution, have you had a chance to sit down with Russell Simmons or Rick Rubin and talk about the current state of Def Jam?LL Cool J: No. not really. The way I look at it is, I was there from the beginning. Everything that you guys are seeing right now represents growth. It’s not like we went wrong or anything. When we started it was me Russell, Rick, and Heidi Smith the secretary ordering sandwiches for lunch with no furniture in the office. So when I look at Def Jam now with hundreds of employees, I’m impressed. That’s not to say that, musically, things can’t be better but that’s ebb and flow. With any label or any situation that will happen. I don’t have a problem with the growth. People don’t know I owned a piece of Def Jam but I sold it back at a certain point for a certain price. I own my catalog. Before Lyor [Cohen] and them left we did a deal and I got my full catalog. LL Cool J owns his whole body of work. Every record. I’m very happy about the growth Def Jam has experienced. Now, do I feel the Hip-Hop side of the music needs more attention, yes. Do I feel like that’s going to change shortly, yes. I think Hip-hop will be served more now that Shakir [Stewart] is up there doing what he does. You’re going to see the Hip-Hop get better. You can see from my project. You’re probably going to be getting calls from people you’ve never spoken to before. People are excited about Hip-Hop. People are excited about my project and I know it’s going to succeed. You now have people up there that are really rooting for the artists. There is no more competition between the executives and the artists. It’s back to artists being artists and executives being executives and we’re all going to have success. AllHipHop.com: When you look back at when you came in and all the doors you’ve opened, who are some of the artists, besides yourself, that make you feel like it was all worth it?LL Cool J: There are too many to name man. Off the top of my head, I think what Lil’ Wayne is doing is great. As an artist and just his overall work ethic is great.  For him to consistently come up with that many verses and mixtapes and then what he did with the album, that’s great. All that speaks to his work ethic and success never rewards the wrong person. I’m happy for him.

“All I know is when it comes to this microphone and this whole MC thing I’m fearless. I been doing this my whole career and I’m built for it.”

AllHipHop.com: You’ve been in your fair share of situation when you had to introduce somebody to the wrong side of a battle rap. If someone challenged you on that level today, at this point in your career, would you entertain them or let it go?LL Cool J: I don’t know what I would do. I’m so unpredictable I don’t know what I would do. I might not say nothing or I might make like 19 records about you. I don’t know. It’s all according to how I feel it. I’m quirky like that. I might ignore something people thought I wouldn’t ignore and then I might feed into something people thought I really wouldn’t or shouldn’t feed into. I really don’t know. All I know is when it comes to this microphone and this whole MC thing I’m fearless. I been doing this my whole career and I’m built for it. But I’m not going after that. Bullies always end up on their back at some point so I’m not going that route. But if anyone feels like they want to underestimate me, it’s whatever turns you on homie. Just know what it is. I enjoy making my music. I really enjoy that so I do what makes my soul feel good. That’s why I’m here 24 almost 25 years later. Since the day you were actually born I’ve been making records. I’ve been doing it because I love what I do. I don’t sell out and that’s why I’m still there. I’ve been very courageous in the decisions I’ve made. Be they popular or unpopular I’ve always stuck to my guns. On “I’m Bad” I said, “When I retire I’ll be worshipped like an old battleship,” and I meant it man. I got to do this man. I need it, I want it.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Shawty Lo and “Meatball”: Who Is Lying? Busta: What’s The Deal?

DISCLAIMER:

All content within this section is pure rumor and generally have no factual info outside of what the streets have whispered in our ear. Read on.

TODAY’S RUMORS!

Yesterday, I saw somebody beefin’ about the rumors being too long. I agree. So, I am chillin’ today, but read the rumors yesterday – its a doozie. I think I am going to see Dark Knight at the first matinee. I can do that.

KIA SHINE REPLIES TO THREE SIX MAFIA

I’m not going to spend a bunch of jibber jabber time on this one. Just go to illseed.com for the video. It’s pretty interesting. Basically, Kia Shine takes the high road and claims that Paul and J were a lil’ shook ones to pop stuff in his face. He also says it’s a time for peace and all that good stuff.

INTERSCOPE: I BEG YOU!

Listen, Interscope, and listen GOOD! Illseed needs for that Busta Rhymes album to come out this year. It’s a decent year for Hip-Hop and we have some momentum with Lil Wayne, Nas, Common and the Game…NOW…we need that Busta. For fans, go to the AllHipHop media and music section to hear the new Busta with producer Bangladesh called “I Got Bass” – ITS CRAZY!!!!!

Now, here is the rumor. I recently heard that Busta was re-added to the Interscope schedule, if he was ever dropped. But now I am hearing that he’s been totally removed from the UK release scheduled and nothing is being said about the U.S. release. With this new song and the last two records, Busta needs to come out. JEEZ.

For the love of God and family, will this man’s album come out already?

ILLSEED’S QUICKIES

Baby Time? I don’t believe it, but rumor has it Alicia and Swizzie are preggie.

SIGNS THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN END

I was reading USA Today and peeped the following lead:

In Europe, great apes are inching toward obtaining the same legal rights as humans.

The apes are looking to get their Civil Rights on thanks to some humans. I don’t think apes should be killed or any of that, but giving them basic human rights seems crazy when a lot of humans don’t have human rights. Right? Spain seeks to be the first nation to give human rights to animals, apes in particular. Wow. Austria is doing something similar. Apes and chimps would be able to keep a bank account and even have a legal guardian, like an adopted kid. They have first and last names in Austria. Now, in the defense of the ape lobbyists, they say they just want to stop the apes from being killed or tortured. But if it pops off right, apes would get better zoos and all that.

I guess homeless people are like, “WTF? Put me in a zoo then.” And Cambodian sex slaves are like, “HELP US!”

Go to illseed.com for part 2 of “SIGNS THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN END” A 68-year-old woman forces a handicapped person into sex. SMH!SHELZ: KICK IT

The GZA Strikes Back

Yeah… so I jacked this from Miss Info. But I found it amusing, so I’m going to share.

The GZA has a track about to drop and it’s aimed at the General of the Guerilla Unit, Mr. Fifty. It seems last year there was some slight beef between GZA and Fifty. (I must have slept through that.) Fifty threw a couple jabs, but GZA put it on pause. Well, dude is going to push play tomorrow morning. The song, entitled Paper Plates, according to GZA would be enough to annihilate Fifty. That’s if his career wasn’t already dead. “He can’t f*ck with me lyrically,” said the Genuis. And you know what? I agree.

Kim Porter Finally Gets Realistic

Those Hollywood writers might want to re-think hitting the picket stroll again because damn if we don’t have another reality show a-brewing. This time it’s Kim Porter. Lifetime has reportedly offered Diddy’s most prolific baby moma her own 30 minute slot. The show is supposedly going to be about a single mother raising her kids. Damn, that’s creative. Hey, maybe they can somehow merge this with Making the Band and Diddy can make her walk to Brooklyn for some diapers.

Maybe She Misplaced Her Brain Cells in the Library[Illseed note before Shelz continues. Maybe some people people have it confused. If you rock this shirt, I’m going to look the other way if somebody jumps on you. Don’t let a single hair on Obama’s head  get hurt…just trust me on this one.]

I don’t know if any of you have heard this story, but it simply cements my belief that some people slough off more dead brain cells than others. A Grad Student in New York decided it would be a good idea to don a t-shirt that read “Obama is My Slave” and walk down the streets of New York. You know what happened next. She encountered some Obama fans and they let her know what they thought about her new shirt. That girl is probably still washing spit out of her hair. But anyway, she decided that her fashion felony was not her fault and may be suing the designer she bought the shirt from. I’m really going to need her to forget about the doctorate and invest in a red helmetimmediately.

Meatball Airs It Out

Head over to AllHipHop’s podcast section to get the word from the meatball’s mouth. This dude claims he and his peoples did indeed hand Shawty Lo his ass over the weekend. However, Meatball said he did not snatch Lo’s chain; someone involved in the mêlée gave it to him, he claims. He then said his intention was to give the chain to T.I. Presenting a gift to the King? That’s some straight La Cosa Bankhead ish right there. Then Meatball went on to say that Shawty Lo cried during the incident and prior to the fight, Lo was paying him to hang with his crew. But Meatball also said that while he was in jail, Lo swagger jacked him all to hell, stole his whole style and his friends too. This is really starting to sound like an after school special to me. And with those last little axe grinding comments, I’m not sure if I’m buying this story. But what do I know?

Deuces!!

I’M BORED

Here are some pictures. Maybe I will do something else after “Dark Knight” like update with some more rumors.

YESTERDAY, WE LOVE YOU!

They keep us talking, but if we stop talking about them then they should worry!

BREAKING NEWS: Keak da Sneak Arrested

AllHipHop.com has confirmed that Bay Area rapper Keak Da Sneak was arrested on July 10 and charged with four felony counts.

The arrest occurred around 11 PM in Sacramento, a few hours after Keak had attended a funeral.

The apprehension left the Hyphy pioneer with unspecified injuries which he was treated for.

Afterward, he was booked on firearms charges and resisting arrest.

Keak remained detained over the past weekend due to a separate outstanding warrant.

A Justice Department statement confirmed he appeared before a magistrate judge on Monday July 14.

At press time, Keak is scheduled to post bail and be released in the next few days.

A Bay Area veteran and favorite, Keak began his career in 1994 appearing on C-Bo’s 1994 EP The Autopsy.

He would gain his first mainstream exposure in 1997 as a member of 3XKrazy, with their single “Keep It On the Real.”

As a solo artist, Keak’s biggest moment came in 2006 with his appearance on E-40’s “Tell Me When to Go,” which sparked a short national interest in Hyphy music.

His latest album, Deified, was released on June 10 through Koch Records.

The album features appearances from Prodigy, Alchemist, Too Short, Celly Cel, Lil Keke, and Daz.
