Killer Mike won three awards at the 2024 Grammys, but his family got something much more important on Monday (February 5). The Run the Jewels member learned his 21-year-old son was finally getting a kidney transplant after being on the waitlist for more than two years.
“What sticks out to me the most has nothing to do with last night,” Killer Mike told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “I woke up to a phone call that my son who’s been waiting on the kidney for the last two and a half years is on way to his hospital right now to get surgery, to get the kidney.”
Killer Mike was still in California when he received the exciting update about his son. He flew back to Georgia to be with his family for the surgery.
The 2024 Grammys turned out to be a chaotic event for Killer Mike, who went from winning awards to getting escorted out of the building in handcuffs. He was detained over an alleged physical altercation, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Killer Mike was booked for misdemeanor battery. He was released on zero bail. The 48-year-old rapper did not want to discuss his run-in with the law, instead focusing on the positives regarding his son and the Grammys.
“Man, ain’t nobody talking about all that mess,” he told the AJC. “I walked out with three Grammys. I took beautiful pictures, man. I got the job done and it was a beautiful time. I swept an entire category yesterday. That’s what I got to say about it.”
Killer Mike won the Grammy for Best Rap Album for his acclaimed project Michael. He secured the awards for Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance for his track “Scientists & Engineers,” which featured André 3000, Future and Eryn Allen Kane.
