Missy Elliott Talks About The High Expectations For Her Return To Music

(AllHipHop News) It is going on nine years since rapper/producer/singer Missy Elliott dropped her last full length studio album. The multiplatinum selling performer spoke with Yahoo!’s “The Yo Show” about what is taking so long for the official follow-up to 2005’s The Cookbook.

“When I create something, it’s got to be special, and it can’t just be to throw something out there because I feel like I’m Missy,” said the Virginia native. “I got to feel like what I’m giving the fans is 100% and that it’s game-changing. I don’t just throw out microwave records.”

Miss E. assures that writer’s block is not the cause for the delay. According to the “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)” rapper, she is still searching for inspiration.

“Just being inspired by things is what I’m grabbing for,” explains Missy. “It’s different now, so I’m just trying to make sure that what I give is 100% because I know that expectations is high from my fans, and it’s high of myself.”

While Missy fans may have to wait a little while longer for her next LP, she does reveal that listeners will get to her work with Faith Evans. The former roommates are collaborating on Faith’s upcoming album.

missy is the greatest female rapper of all time she created her own lane and set trends and was lyrically ahead of her time

    • Black Jay

Missy is dope, but the greatest?! I think MC Lyte would have something to say about that.

      • Rick Ferguson

Damn it don’t matter if we talking greatest female or one of the greats in general LAURYN HILL always gets overlooked. Doper than 100% of the female MCs and sh*ts on 95% of the males but still no respect.

      • SeekingMyMassa

Maybe because she only put one album out then spreadedher legs to any Haitian with money.
        Should have spread for Massa!

      • Black Jay

        ……………

      • SeekingMyMassa

        Yep Massa does have money.

      • SeekingMyMassa

All MC Lyte does today is introduce other hip hop artists twice a year.

      • Black Jay

        ………..

      • SeekingMyMassa

        Yes, on BET.

  • WeakSauce

Ain’t finna lie, Missy is missing in the game of half talented mothffkksssss!

  • hoeyuno

Missy was bigger then nicki minaj could ever be but even though she did have skills her and timbaland bit the shit outta busta rhymes flow, videos and wardrobe.

    • DC King Of Hearts

I always thought that, but I also feel like she added a bit of her own craziness to it. Plus her and Busta both have a tight relationship with similar directors (Hype Williams and Dave Meyers)

      • hoeyuno

true. she definitely could do her thang..plus she never faded outta style. she left on her own terms.

    • Antwon Grant

she had enuff of her own signature..everything she did was outside the box..u may even say she prolly inspired Bus a little bit…they’ve worked together alot

      • regal84

She even referred to herself as the female Busta Rhymes..

  • Black Jay

I don’t know about this one….. I think she’s missed her window. Most superstars leave the game due to ego (what up Jodeci) and then try to reenter when they’ve realized how much money they left on the table. But by that time it’s too late. Your career got crushed by your dumb thinking.
Missy’s a little different, but not by much. Maybe she’s a little different than a Jodeci. She had medical issues. But ultimately, I’ve never seen anyone except Dr. Dre leave the scene for so long and think they can just waltz back in whenever they feel like it. Hip Hop is a different monster than other genres. It eats up superstars and spits them out. You can try to take one week off if you want to, you’ll be getting your Ma$e on after that. Praying to God, begging to Puff, and hiding from the feds.

    • King Flashy TheFirst

I think she has potential to at least go gold if she can make one major hit. Probably just needs the right feature. Sade had a ten year gap between albums, and Soldier of love became a smash hit.

      • Black Jay

Let’s keep it real dude. Sade is Sade. Missy ain’t even on the same planet. You’re comparing apples and dump trucks. Not even close.

    • Anne Noise

Missy isn’t just another superstar, she’s one of the most successful hip-hop artists ever, and one of the most critically appreciated. I don’t disagree that long windows of absence can cause a huge drop off on sales, and that she’ll have a tough time with a comeback given the massive changes in the industry since her last album dropped, but man… it’s Missy Miss. She can put that shit together.

      • Black Jay

Oh… No doubt she has my well wishes. She might do okay. But the odds are strongly against her. And that’s real.

      • Anne Noise

Yeah, agreed. As long as she is happy with her creative output and has a stable life, I am happy for her; as long as I get more music from her, regardless of sales, I am happy for me, and even if I don’t get new music from her, The Cookbook, This is Not a Test, Miss E, and Under Construction are still fantastic albums.

      • Antwon Grant

I think Missy will be fine…she’s not just boxed in the hip hop scope of things…even though she hasn’t been behind the mic/in front of the cam…she has been behind the pen of a lot of shit over these yrs…so I think she’s still relevant even if her name isn’t on it…and will be able to put it out there right when her name is

      • Anne Noise

Absolutely. She’s been out for physical health issues, which are understandable, and has remained creative and involved behind the scenes when she had the time and energy. Her continuing strength is inspirational!

    • SeekingMyMassa

That’s because apes run the genre and not Massa.
Even bama is running this country into the ground.

      • Black Jay

        ……….

      • brotha_man

i hate when the klan tries to infiltrate

      • SeekingMyMassa

I love it, klans love turning black men like me out.

  • MrNoName2K

I think she’ll still hold her weight

    • SeekingMyMassa

      Lol

  • Romia Blue

Missy’s been doing a lot of behind the scenes collabos though. Kelly Rowland, Fantasia, Katy Perry, Eve etc. Let her get in the right space and Timbo on speed dial…it could be supa dupa fly all over again. Damn that’s been almost 20 yrs. Eve’s album was slept on

    • Anne Noise

Eve’s album had some total bangers on it. Above average album for sure.

      • SeekingMyMassa

Even her Massa billionaire husband couldn’t help give it play.

      • brotha_man

eve first album was her only banger all the rest were….ehhhh

  • Jayson C Williams

She’s a genius! Do what you want! If it’s in the best interest of the art/genre

  • acapwn

Missy not only a legend but a real trendsetter. I can wait for greatness.

  • I respect Missy, she will return as she left….Lil Kim is finished, Foxy Brown is a fraud still repping Brooklyn, and ain’t done nothing for the borough. She refuse to change it up, same weave, outfits, and still beefing her way through life…..Remy might still have a chance and Nicki made her money and ran.

    • SeekingMyMassa

      And we care why?

    • brotha_man

dont forget foxy’s turrible beer belly
