Pharrell Addresses The Lack Of Black Women On His Album Cover

(AllHipHop News) The reason there will never be anything truly perfect is because there will always be someone to find a flaw in the most beautiful art. Today (February 27th), Pharrell addressed the recent criticism over his upcoming album G I R L not having any Black women on the cover.

During his interview on The Breakfast Club, Pharrell says he he was disappointed in the backlash due to the fact that his mother, a Black woman runs a part of his business and his wife, Helen Lasichanh, is also Black. While using the chorus to the song “Mona Lisa” from his new album, Pharrell explained why it is ridiculous to interpret his album cover as racist:

The one thing I was trying to help change is this crazy statuesque standard of you have to white, fair and thin to be beautiful. You know my next single goes ‘Not even Marilyn Monroe, Cleoprtra, see. Not even Joan of Arc, that don’t mean nothing to me. I just want a different girl. ‘

“Mona Lisa” is set to be Pharrell’s next single, according to the singer. Pharrell also revealed that he 12 Years A Slave dark skinned actress Lupita Nyong’o that “her skin was flawless” at an Oscar’s luncheon.

The old “some of my best friends are black” excuse. Pathetic.

    • coach jenkins

his wife is black tho how is that an excuse.

      • RazaBladeKing

I’m not sure if that’s a serious question. [Black artists are historically not given equal opportunities in entertainment] [Black artist drops album] [Black artist needs album art] [Black artist has chance to extend opportunity to black models, who are also historically not offered those opportunities, to be in his album art] [Black artist chooses not to, and to extend those opportunities to the “usual (non-black) suspects”] [When criticized, artist says “What are you talkin bout? I love black women! My mom and wife are black!]

It’s actually worse, since he has people in his life goin through it. At least Robin Thicke had the one chick in his video. It’s really not that serious though… this article just insults my intelligence.

      • brotha_man

        real shit

  • Action Jackson

“The concept of race has no scientifically proven, biological, or genetic validity. It is a social construct that has been used as a tool of oppression for centuries.”

    -Dead Prez

  • MrNoName2K

Maaaaaan black, white, Chinese, or candy stripe, its really not all that serious. Sh*t, get in where you fit in. He aint gotta explain sh*t..

  • brotha_man

Self hatred is the worst… my wifey is a beautiful haitian woman and we were just talking about the reason he doesn’t beautiful black women on his cover….its said how much love or lack there of we actually show one another. nothing makes my day sweeter than seeing a beatiul black woman

    • Inmadopicouroz✓QUEENSᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

      Your wife is a THOT!

      • Papi Peligro

        Your @$$HOLE IS THOT.

      • Inmadopicouroz✓QUEENSᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

        U suspect Mexican!

      • Papi Peligro

I might get I N S called on my @$$ but somebody is in yo @$$

      • Inmadopicouroz✓QUEENSᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

Why you concerned with that? That’s suspect ? Which in Spanish means gay or homo. just saying!

      • brotha_man

dont talk about your mother that way, step son

      • Inmadopicouroz✓QUEENSᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

my mom is not Haitian. Don’t worry I’ll wait for your “oh so logical response”…..(Willy Wonka Pose)

      • brotha_man

u never did embrace ur blackness, all u do is walk around wearing elmo shirts….shm son. ur are a black male, accepting that is totally up to you.

        your step father,

        BrothaMan

      • Inmadopicouroz✓QUEENSᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

Even after I told toy that you would respond with that… U still dido it! Cornball!!

      • brotha_man

        ur life must really suck.

      • Inmadopicouroz✓QUEENSᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

This is why we have black on black crime. sucka!

    • Jayson C Williams

I dont know how to interpret his cover.. He could of just had all colors on the cover he knew this would cause an uproar. He did it on purpose to set a platform to defend his stance..

      • Arrie Mental Woodard

or he could have done just what he did…. made a cover for HIS album not my album or yours. Who cares what chicks he has on the cover. i mean if you really want to get down to it, these chicks dont actually look american so should we think he hates America or Americans….

      • Jayson C Williams

No you’re wrong sorry. Usually I never allude to someone’s opinion being wrong but this was an obvious tactic to draw up controversy. All year he’s been thinking in ways to market and how to drum up publicity. His last solo project was his least successful project he created ever as far as expectations. So he did this with controversy In mind. Sorry if u can’t see it like that. But if a Jew came out with album artwork with nothing but black ppl you’d be like huh? So yea no go, this was purposely done. And when is his album dropping oh yea anyday now? So think harder bro and see the bigger picture. His wife’s black moms this and that and u place all but black woman on ur cover? Lol it’s a ploy to drum up controversy. Guess this is y I’m in the industry and some of you guys are just bloggers

      • Arrie Mental Woodard

hahaha nice way to hype yourself up and try and put us bloggers down…. first off im not a blogger, im commenting on an article. secondly industry or not your opinion is yours and mine is mine. so where am i wrong since you tried to point that out…. in the 3 comments i left, not once did say Pharrel sis this because blah blah blah…. what i said was who cares, its his album cover, they dont look american so should we think he doesnt like americans also (which was is in reply to brotha_man self hatred comment. i asked who is he self hating? I didnt dis you or anyone else… and i said Happiness doesnt come in a color…. by the way, you being in hte industry does not make you any smarter than anyone else on this page or website that makes comments. this is allhiphop, a place where we come to talk shit, poke fun and generally get thru the day with some laughs… im not in here flexing a title. good for you, you in the industry, i applaud that but its not relevant. your last comment was on point and i could get behind it but that industry comment and put down minimized what was said. it was downright corny and pointless.

      • Arrie Mental Woodard

a holier than thou stance takes away from an intelligent response and by no means am i up in arms.

      • Jayson C Williams

And to further my point if you listen to my tone, “bloggers” comment wasn’t aimed at you it was for others on here who sometimes write out of emotion and passion instead of factually. I actually agree who cares but we all do don’t we? You sounded intellectual so I rather u argue on the coherent side than the passionate one. Just constructive criticism. Does my job give me a more intimate insight on was done here? Prob. Does that mean your opinion doesn’t matter? Of course it does but u sounded to smart to be repeating what some of these other “bloggers” spew.. Correct me if I’m wrong lol

      • Arrie Mental Woodard

true that, i see what you are saying. when dealing with this site there are some people on here that have good points but deep down are just assholes looking to shittt on the next man and thats why i was saying the industry line was corny, plus you also sound intelligent so i didnt feel it was neccessary because your points were valid. i think its just the “bloggers” rubbing off on both of us slightly… but at least this back n forth didnt up like most allhiphop comment sections…. with threats of violence and gimme your address bullshittttt, lmao!!!

      • Jayson C Williams

I apologize if I hurt your feelings or attempted to minimize what you said. But I def apologized before even having to state it my full rebuttal. Wasn’t corny it was the facts. The fact remains and it’s so obvious. If you didn’t care than why comment? If you’re not a blogger than y are you blogging? At any rate I don’t have to big myself up your lengthy reply did that for me on it’s own. Cheer up don’t be so ultra defensive. You still haven’t proven my quote as non factual..

      • Arrie Mental Woodard

lmao, my feelings are not hurt in the slightest… the point was, you made points that makes sense and i can/could get behind them but the industry ish was corny, not the whole comment itself. i think you read that wrong. so again the you being in the industry and we are just bloggers was corny not the reasoning behind why you feel this was a ploy by Pharrell. i can disagree with someone and still see and understand their point of view, without dissing said person. but its all good, aint nothing! and to clarify…. i dont care who he puts on his album covers but i do like to comment and have a back n forth with folks.

      • Jayson C Williams

Respect bro! This is what it’s all about!

      • Jayson C Williams

Nothing about Americans or nationalism.. This was strictly a race topic that was drummed up by his artwork.. Not nationalism. Nobody is questioning his patriotism today, they’re questioning his act in a racially overtone manor

      • Inmadopicouroz✓QUEENSᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

Im a real nicca and to bit*h niccas like you, that equals a hater in your eyes when I keep it real. Feel me?

    • Arrie Mental Woodard

he married to a black woman…. who is self hating…. you and your wife have no clue why there isnt any black women on his cover. and dam fam you and your wife dont have any other topics to discuss like how to pay the mortgage down early, upgrading to a single family home, your kids schoolwork, etc.

      • brotha_man

first off i am a senior financial (budget) analyst. 2nd, me and wifey didn’t wake up to coffee and start our morning by saying “hey honey, did u see that pharrell cover.I volunteer and mentor kids at a charter school we have a debate program called chatterbox and the topic this week was “stereotypes in the media”. 3rd i dont trip on my mortgage, i got a nice condo im putting on the market and upgrading to a house, as i have the VA loan. my condo is paid for, allowing me to use the VA loan again for the purchase of my home. my daughter is only 2, but can assure you (not sure why im assuring you) education is important.
what u mentioned above does not reflect my life style, at one point it did. but that is no longer the case.

        by Manly P. Hall

      • Arrie Mental Woodard

good reply brotha_man…. your reply is basically what i meant tho…. you have a lot of good stuff going on and Pharrel’s album cover isnt that important to be speaking about (although we are doing it here) but with the debate program i can see the album cover being used to stir up conversation, so i applaud you for that. the latter part of my comment was merely me poking you in the ribs about the conversations between you and wifey, i wasnt trying to act as if i know your particular situation, just having some allhiphop shittt talking fun, thats all. but on the real it seems like you’re a pretty stand up dude, so salute! plus i was in the military as well and will be using the Va loan in the future. i will also be checking out that book you mentioned! i have the Occult Anatomy of Man by Manly!

      • brotha_man

no love lost…manly p is pretty dope and deep. if you haven’t read manly p hall’s “mystical christ” or “old testament wisdom” i recommend those as well.

  • Daynjarus1

Who gives a fu** what he puts on his album cover. Quit trying to make something that it’s not. I love ALL women. Don’t matter what flavor she is. If I feel like some Asian delight, then dammit, get the chop sticks muuufu**a.

    • Arrie Mental Woodard

      lmao chop sticks

    • MrNoName2K

lmao you a fool for that

  • people complain about any fuccking thing..this is the most dumbest sh!t to censure, wtf is wrong with these people that complain about what skin color should be on an album cover? i bet most of them are dumb insecure black women that love to put syringe needles in their ass cheeks..

  • Black Jay

N*ggas…. This is 2014. If you’re still trippin’ over racial sh*t like this, you’re a sucka. This ain’t no relevant issue. Skateboard P has basically dedicated his whole life thus far to the Black Culture. Now cause he has a different type of album cover n*ggas is hating? The album title is G.I.R.L.The album title isn’t WHITE GIRLS ARE BETTER THAN BLACK GIRLS.
He has said that he’s married to a black woman. But…..Even if he did like dating White girls, so what? The only acceptable time to discriminate in life is when you choose a husband or wife. The NAACP ain’t in nobody’s bed sheets. And before n*ggas come at me on some “you must be down with a white chick” sh*t, no I have a Black woman. It doesn’t mean sh*t though. On this one people need to shut the f*ck up.

    • Arrie Mental Woodard

word bruh! your girl could purple, who cares, if she makes you happy then thats whats important. people need to shut the f up telling other people who they should be with or who they should include… HAPPINESS DOESNT COME IN A COLOR

    • RazaBladeKing

“Basically dedicated his whole life thus far to Black Culture”? Since when is skateboards, clothes that don’t match, and white girls “Black Culture”? Boy yousa true clown for that. I can dig what you said conceptually, but it’s clear the subliminal point flew way over your head. This ain’t about his personal life, and It ain’t a “different type of album cover”. Its more of the same, and we should expect more from OUR artists. Your whole “If you disagree wit me, you’re not allowed to have an opinion” closing is a joke. Try harder.

      • Black Jay

Look at his production credits and then holla at me. Your statement is suspect son…. You playing yourself with that lack of knowledge. Judging from your silly statement you probably have at least 10 of his hits on your IPod and don’t even know it. Book up!

      • RazaBladeKing

Umm… what? Was that even a response? Alright…
        1. Me bein a producer, and bein from VA, I know Pharell’s credits very well. I read the books that come wit CDs for that type of thing, so… yeah. Overruled. Leading to…
        2. Don’t own an iPod (mp3 quality is compressed, sanitized, and fake sounding). Strictly CD and vinyl. Overruled.
        3. Since you addressed none of my points, no need for me to elaborate on them. My guess is that you knew better than to even try. So again. Try harder.

      • BIG MIKE SOMETHING SERIOUS

MAN I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY NOTICE THAT ABOUT MP3’S SOUNDS. I PREFER CD’S TOO!

  • Arrie Mental Woodard

Who cares what chicks he has on the cover. i mean if you really want to get down to it, these chicks dont actually look american so should we think he hates America or Americans…. GTFOH…. its his album.

  • Sasha Jane

I’m not concerned about Pharrell’s wife and mother being black because they aren’t in the public light. I’m worried about the subliminal messages this album cover portrays through the media. Lack of color on an album cover can turn into something greater if we don’t nip it in the bud while it’s small. Yes, this is a minuscule issue but we have to see diversity in this country on a regular basis or we’ll quickly move backward to the point where we won’t see any diversity in the media at all. I don’t know about you all but I don’t want to go back to those days…

    • BIG MIKE SOMETHING SERIOUS

GOOD DEBATE MS JANE. I ENJOYED IT.

  • Jayson C Williams

Lol no matter what side you’re on in this topic.. Phareell GOT YOU! He has you talking about it bad or good. Industry rule no.1 all publicity is good publicity especially when your albums dropping any day now. Now half of you will go and just listen just because of this topic. We’re talkinh about his album before he even does is press round.. Lol good strategy Pharrell! Everybody’s all up in arms and for what? A cover? Freedom of speech/artist expression? Now a days even when a main artists comes out we don’t talk about their album up until it’s set to release. Pharrell you just up the ante from your last solo joint that sucked. Took him 8 years to go back again and do a solo album. He doesn’t wanna fail! Controversy folks!!!

  • Sasha Jane

I think you’re missing the point a little bit. I don’t think anyone is concerned with who Pharrell dates. I think it’s more about the message he’s sending through the media. He only has one type of beauty on his album cover. All races of women are beautiful and with the type of reputation Pharrell has for being a versatile artist, people wanted to see him express those same qualities on his album cover.

    • Black Jay

Do you own Pharrell? Giving most of his life to Black culture isn’t enough for you? He’s an artist. It’s his perspective. If you don’t like what he represents (which I personally think is refreshingly good compared to Rick Ross) then don’t buy his album. I hate to say it but this sounds like some sh*t that was cooked up in the back of a beauty salon.

      • Sasha Jane

First off, why do you seem so angry? Secondly, do you understand the importance of influence in the media? Images like these can become the norm and we’ll quickly move back into an era where diversity will be non-existent. As previously stated, Pharrell is a very versatile artist. He can crossover into any genre. This cover is NOT what he represents. Whether you want to admit it or not, this issue goes beyond album sales…

      • Brindle

i agree 100%, we gotta stop being apathetic to every situation but you gotta admit they are making a big deal out this… but yes, he should’ve had a sista on there…

      • Sasha Jane

It is a small issue but it can turn into something bigger if we don’t hold the media accountable. I’m not concerned with him having black women on the cover. It’s the fact that he only displayed white women. Latinas, Asians, and Middle Eastern women are beautiful too.

      • Franchesca R Davis

LOL they weren’t all white but okay

      • Sasha Jane

They all look white to me but to each his own…none of them were black or brown

      • Franchesca R Davis

So all of them should look like Lupita…gotcha

      • Sasha Jane

I didn’t say that but it wouldn’t hurt for at least one of them to look like her…got that?

      • Franchesca R Davis

        LMAOOOOOOO you all are hilarious

      • Sasha Jane

I’m failing to see the comedy but I’m glad you’re enjoying yourself…

      • GQ

Bottomline, it’s HIS cover! Why is it alarming? Who cares? Oh yeah, insecure, sensitive black chicks do. SMH

      • Sasha Jane

        Too bad I’m not black…

      • Brindle

i think we need to stop holding the media accountable for our image. This is why I do agree he should’ve put a sista on there but their’s another image we need to change and that is “black folk complain about everything”… it makes us look powerless…

      • Sasha Jane

I don’t have a problem with having the image that black people complain about everything as long as the complaints are warranted…and as long as we are working to do something about the complaints. Hell…MLK, Malcolm X, Rosa Parks, and Barack Obama “complained”.

      • Brindle

I agree, I just don’t think this is a MLK, Malcom X situation.

      • Sasha Jane

…and that’s where the issue lies

      • Guest

I don’t have a problem with having the image that black people complain about everything as long as their complaints are warranted…and as long as they are working to do something about the complaints. Hell…MLK, Malcolm X, Rosa Parks, and Barack Obama “complained”.

      • Black Jay

Who says he didn’t have a sister on there? You got a DNA test? No diss bro but people need to step back and be fair. This is bogus.

      • Brindle

aiight BJ, don’t go getten all CSI on me, you know it don’t “appear” to be no sista’s on there. I don’t think we should be all upset about it, but I would’ve thought I black man would notice when he in an event and it aint no black people, then invite one so to speak..

      • Black Jay

@BRINDLE….. Hahahahaha….. I see you bruh. Lol! It’s all good. I see the point you were trying to make. CSI huh? Lol! Funny as sh*t! Peace bro.

      • Franchesca R Davis

but why should he? He’s had so many different types of women in his videos and everything. Why does it matter on his ONE album cover?? Also his spouse is black so……This outlash is pointless

      • Sasha Jane

Why does the race of his wife matter? She’s not in the public eye. I’m more concerned with the message this album cover conveys through the media.

      • Franchesca R Davis

LMAO what message is that??? Guess I’m still confused. I don’t see any message he is portraying. I guess you have failed to watch his VIDEOS where he’s had plenty of women of color in them…many of them dark skin by the way. I’m sure there would be no riot if Beyonce had an album called “real men” with a bunch of white men on the cover

      • Sasha Jane

First off, I’m not a Beyonce fan in the least bit. I’m not even sure why she was referenced. Secondly, there is a such thing as influence in the media. Whether he likes it or not…Pharrell has that. I’ve followed his career since the beginning and I know that he is very diverse. This album cover doesn’t represent that. It only shows one type of female. We have to hold entertainers accountable for these types of issues while they’re small. I don’t want to live in the same America that my grandmother did where diversity in the media was non-existent.

      • Franchesca R Davis

I’m using beyonce as an example so chill. But to trip off of one album cover is very comical. But go fight that useless battle. Have fun

      • Sasha Jane

Your example was based on speculation and not fact. Fighting for diversity in the media is useless? I bet Essence, Latina, and Asian Avenue would beg to differ. Your maturity level is showing now…

      • Franchesca R Davis

What??? I’m talking about fighting on THIS issue is pointless. The fact that Pharrell didn’t have anyone that “looked black” on there is not something we should be discussing or having an issue with. In fact not all of the women on there were white. The woman in the back is clearly a woman that isn’t white by the way. Diversity in the media is a whole different ball game. Never did I say NOT fight about that. That isn’t what this is about though

      • Sasha Jane

Are you aware that this album cover is a part of the media? Obviously not, being that you boldly made that statement. Additionally, I’m not concerned with whether there’s a black woman on the cover or not. As I previously stated, album covers are about the art of sight. All the women’s skin colors are white. It’s a lack of diversity in skin color that alarms me. There were no black, brown, yellow, or red skinned women displayed.

      • Sasha Jane

This is definitely what this is about and the fact that you don’t understand that is beyond me. Not once did I say Pharrell should have a black woman on the cover of his album. I said there should be more diversity on the cover. There are dark-skinned and fair-skinned women of all different races. A dark-skinned middle-eastern woman would have sufficed…

      • brotha_man

beyonce would never do that. however, rihanna probably would

      • Brindle

the outlash is pointless… I guess I’m just saying me personally, right before that camera snapped I would say’d “WAIT!, where the black women at?” but that’s me, I been addicted to my people since 3rd grade. I don’t put that pressure on no one else though, i just would think he would notice it, especially since his wife is black… i think we do, as a people, have to acknowledge that we must control our image, but now that we have the power to, we seem to ignore it

      • Franchesca R Davis

I’m still not upset. This diversifying in the media I get it but Pharrell is just ONE person. Blacks LOVE to pick and choose what to be fake outraged about.

      • brotha_man

        some blacks…lets not generalize

      • brotha_man

because in society today black men and women are viewed in a negative manner. its not about race and showing pride per se, its about relieving the tension that america has placed regarding white perception of blacks, the world perception of blacks. in my opinion( which doesn’t really matter)what does it say when a black woman is not good enough for “photographic art” but good enough to be a video girl…..as a black man that mentors urban youth, i can tell u first hand this may be no big deal to us. however it is a big deal to the youth especially the ones that believe they are not good enough to go to college, good enough to be models, etc. again he can do what ever he wants, but little black girls pay attention and ive even mentored some that are ashamed to be black because they feel that the white woman is idolized, and wish to be treated as such…its sad…..but little black boys and girls pay attention.
        it takes a village……

      • BIG MIKE SOMETHING SERIOUS

        PREACH!

      • Franchesca R Davis

*Looks around* Damn I can’t find my damn to give. Try writing these paragraphs to someone who cares or better yet write it to Pharrell or his producers. LOL. You all kill me. If you’re gonna be so fake outraged about it try doing something instead of complaining about it on social media “brotha man.” Yes I want my little black women to be in scantily clad videos. Nevermind other WHOLESOME enrichments to be fairly represented in. People like you pick and choose what to battle over it kills me.

      • brotha_man

not outraged. i just said that most people don’t care. im not complaining. just stating that little black girls and little black boys pay attention to things like this. whats important to me, may not be important to everyone else and vise versa. this is not a debate.but in reality you cant ignore the symbolic psychological message

      • Black Jay

I’m sorry, how do you get anger from a message? Was it all caps? Nope.
But let me ask you this…. Not that it should matter but….Do you know the ethnicity of those models? Do you? You don’t. Without thinking or knowing, my Black people (I don’t know your ethnicity) are so quick to jump on Pharrell and they don’t even know these chicks’ ethnic content. You are aware that there are many different shades of Black, right? Is this album cover going to change the STAND YOUR GROUND LAW? HOW ABOUT THE STOP AND FRISK LAW? There’s enough real sh*t in this world to worry about than Pharrell’s album cover.
        .

      • Sasha Jane

All caps is not the only way to convey anger through text. Your words were angry but that’s beside the point and so is your reference about the Stand Your Ground Laws. This thread pertains to Pharrell’s album cover, not Stop and Frisk. Album covers and modeling are about the art of sight. To the naked eye, these women are white! I’m not concerned with their ethnic makeup pass that point…

      • Black Jay

I hate to hurt your heart but I also have a sister and a cousin that color. So are they White? Maybe the problem isn’t Pharrell’s album cover. Maybe the problem is within your idea of what White & Black is. No diss…. I’m just saying….

      • Sasha Jane

I said their skin color is white so yes your sister and cousin would be included in that. Diversity in skin color has been my concern throughout this entire thread. You have a hard time comprehending…I’m just saying…

      • Black Jay

Okay…. I’m not trying to diss, but you know you sound kinda silly, right? Only racist individuals view America through the lenses of “White and Black”. America has always been a rich tapestry of different races. But to label a person “White” because it’s what you’re most comfortable with completely disregards the cultural significance of said individual and attempts to make things easier for you. And that’s selfish as f*ck. So after you’ve made that statement the problem clearly isn’t Pharrell. It isn’t the models. The problem is your perception of race. That’s real sh*t.

      • Sasha Jane

What are you talking about? I don’t care what race these women are. You keep bringing up race, not me. The fact that he only shows one color is what is alarming. I’m literally speaking on what is seen. There are all colors of the rainbow in the world so what is wrong with displaying all these colors on an album cover? You are clearly reaching and being extreme at this point so I’ll bow out of this discussion gracefully. Good day to you sir.

      • Black Jay

I’ll take your opinion with a smile. Good day to you too ma’am. Appreciate the debate.

      • BIG MIKE SOMETHING SERIOUS

        I AGREE!

      • Isaac Hayes

Man sit yo dumb azz down

      • BIG MIKE SOMETHING SERIOUS

I KNOW IT’S A DIFFERNT TIME, BUT BACK IN THE DAY IT WAS STANDARD TO HAVE A SISTA ON THE ALBUM. NOW IT NOT. THIS STOOD OUT LIKE A SORE THUMB.JMO

    • BIG MIKE SOMETHING SERIOUS

      AGREE!!!

  • Papi Peligro

Isn’t the female on his left got some black.

    • brotha_man

or some latino, or filipino…u dont now here she could be native for all we know

  • Stay Phokus

i think its racist to expect any person of any color to only have their own “race” on anything
its his project let him do him

    • Sasha Jane

Agreed…I think the article should have been more concerned about not having any diversity at all on the cover…

    • brotha_man

so shot in the dark….. you think everything/everyone is racist.

      • Stay Phokus

no I just don’t think a person should be confined or expected to use certain people based on skin colors

        skills over politics

      • brotha_man

happens all the time jsut look around. unemployment line is full of blacks for a reason

  • Papi Peligro

Who ever see album covers in 2014.

  • Brindle

he can put who ever on his album cover he wants…. BUT as far as the racial aspect, I would think a green man would have noticed he didn’t have any green girls on the album he’s presenting to a multi-colored world… Respect all races and show pride in your own… but again, leave that man alone…

  • disqus_ozWYxJMQQn

song is called marilyn monroe. not mona lisa.

  • Guest

The boy Pharrell is full of himself! Rightly so… Anyone who listened to NERD albums knew he was capable of better material then his previous albums. To think all the flack I received for commenting on his previous works from his Stan’s. But in reference to his belief that he was showcasing non-classic beauties on his album cover. EEHHH!!! Wrong!! If he really wanted to distance himself he would have chose women who truly looked ethnic on the album cover. Instead of narrow nosed waifs who look like they were cast in the “Blurred Lines” video. Real brothers(black, white, asian, hispanic) know a real ethnic gem like Cam’s Juju tops these bland hollywood chicks.

  • John Q. Public

    ZZZzzzzz…

  • Lizz40

The silly man just wasn’t thinking. It’s been brought to his attention, so hopefully he’s careful next time.

  • Danny

Pharrel fucked up on this one, point blank. He should know this was gonna happen, put up a Black woman on the album, for there to be only White or white looking women on the album cover is disgraceful and pathetic. He deserves to be called a sell out from this point on.

    • BIG MIKE SOMETHING SERIOUS

      YEEES!

  • drac215

These so called entertainers crack me up!!! First, he steals marvins swag, now the old motown sound(which i do like happy), uses the women he prefers on his album cover, then he makes excuses to what he does. If im marvin i know my sound, if im barry gordy i know my sound, if im a black/brown women/teen i would know pharrell is not into me. My daughters are brownskin and ask sometimes how come they never see anyone like themselves on t.v.. I tell them i love you and most of all God and Jesus loves you more!!! peace

And if it was all black women on the cover nobody would have a problem.

    • brotha_man

no…not among blacks. white folks might trip, but fugg what white folks think

      • Jordan

I am a white folk and I’m telling you no one would give two shits.

      • brotha_man

        *Standing ovation*

  • SBRon

drac215 said: “My daughters are brownskin and ask sometimes how come they never see anyone like themselves on t.v. ” (Okay, Major Network TV, anyway)…That shouldn’t be swept under a rug!! Kerry Washington is just the 2nd sista to star on a tv drama since Diahann Carroll some 45+ years ago?!? MISSED OPPORTUNITY…

  • MassConglom

Yall know that the women that’s closes to him is black right? Did yall even click on the interview?

  • Isaac Hayes

My opinion he should have a darkskin sista on the cover but he can do what he wants I’m not buying it anyway LOL

    • BIG MIKE SOMETHING SERIOUS

      CO-SIGN!!!!

    • golder1

Who cares. Its not the big of a deal. Just because he is black doesnt mean he has to have a black woman on the cover. Us as black people need to stop being so damn sensitive!

  • The_Good_Life

If your black and you says it doesn’t matter, you lack pride. Dude is not a racist, we all agree. My thing is, black women are always overlooked, and are often an afterthought when it comes to decisions on imagery. I expect that to take place in both white and black entertainment but it stings a little when i see black entertainers do it. To me its like a coach continuously putting Jordan on the bench knowing damn well he’s nice enough to be on the starting five.

  • The_Good_Life

If the title of the album was BIG BOOTY HOES, Who’s image do you think would predominantly appear on the cover? I hope y’all understand the seriousness of the difference.
