THE “DOWN” SINGER EXPLAINS THE HIATUS IN HIS CAREER

(AllHipHop News) Cash Money Records has built a music empire that includes superstars Lil Wayne, Drake, and Nicki Minaj. The label has also been attached to numerous artists actively attempting to break ties with the company.

British singer-songwriter Jay Sean is one of those acts to part ways with CMR. The creator of the #1 single “Down” featuring Wayne spoke with The Lowdown with Diana Madison.

“A lot of people don’t understand all the stuff behind the scenes,” explained Sean on why he went several years without dropping new music.

He continued, “I was in a contract I was trying to get out of. I was signed to Cash Money. Things were going great – really well. Then it just went ehh.”

Jay Sean released 2009’s All Or Nothing and 2013’s Neon on Cash Money/Universal. The 37-year-old U.K. native joined other artists  – such as Busta Rhymes, DJ Khaled, and Tyga – to separate from the Birdman-led label.

Juvenile and Turk left CMR to later re-sign with the company. Fellow Hot Boys founding member Lil Wayne is still reportedly suing Cash Money for unpaid royalties.
