‘Too stunned to speak’: Woman checks into South Carolina hotel. Then a housekeeper barges in when she’d least want her to. Then she lies

‘I have a horror story from there as well!!!’

Cortney Cabrera (@cortneycabrera) says a housekeeper at Dunes Village resort in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, walked into her condo during a cheer competition trip and encountered her three minor daughters—ages 13, 13, and 17—in various states of undress, then proceeded to collect towels and trash rather than leaving. The resort, she says, declined to take any action.

Oh, and there were roaches.

Dunes Village Housekeeper Walks in on Undressed Minors

Cabrera says she and her daughters stayed at the beachfront Dunes Village with other cheer families. She says that on the last day of their trip, while she lingered at the beach with the other parents, her three girls returned to the room to shower and dress for an evening stroll on the boardwalk.

What they recounted later upended the trip entirely. One daughter, nude after showering, sat on the bed. Another was stepping out of the shower in the bathroom with the door cracked. According to Cabrera, a housekeeper entered the condo—she concedes the woman may have knocked, though neither girl heard it—and proceeded into the bedroom, encountering the undressed teenager.

“My kids were too stunned to speak,” says Cabrera.

She says the housekeeper did not leave. The woman reportedly collected towels and trash from the bedroom, then walked into the bathroom, where the other daughter was exiting the shower.

“She walked around her, grabbing the towels and the trash,” Cabrera says of the small bathroom, before the housekeeper finished her rounds and left without a word.

“I stayed quiet about this because I was hoping that they would do the right thing,” says Cabrera. She says that when the housekeeper was questioned about the encounter, the woman claimed the girls had been fully dressed. Cabrera says the hotel later called her and said it would not be pursuing the matter further.

“I was trying to resolve it civilly,” she adds, “and they don’t think that it is as alarming as I do.”

Roaches compounded the indignity—on pool towels, inside the unit. “I hope you like roaches,” she warns prospective guests.

‘I Have a Horror Story From There as Well!’

In the comments section, one person tried to cape for Dunes Village. “Just so everyone is clear about Dunes Village each unit is individually owned by a private owner,” they wrote. “Dune Village just manages the properties in a rental program. So essentially it’s not Dunes Village saying they’re not doing anything. It’s the owner of the unit you stayed in. I know it looks like a hotel, but each one of those hotel rooms are privately owned by private owners.”

However, Cabrera replied, “Dunes Village is still responsible for housekeeping and pest control. So regardless they are still liable.”

Cabrera even posted a picture of a dead roach in the bed in the comments section.

Do Not Disturb: What Are Your Rights?

Hotels retain a legal right to enter rooms for cleaning and maintenance. However, guests do hold a reasonable expectation of privacy, particularly (and especially) when minors are present. Complaints about housekeepers entering without adequate warning are far from rare.

A Booking.com reviewer at Dunes Village, from January 2026, reported that housekeeping entered their room even though they were told twice not to come in.

“I didn’t like that housekeeping went into my room after I told them twice, once through the door after they knocked and outside of the room face to face, that I didn’t need anything,” they wrote. “I also had the ‘do not disturb’ sign on the doorknob.”

Secondly, judging by the reviews on Booking.com, roaches are an issue. There appear to be at least 60 poor reviews in which roaches were an issue.
