Recalling That Time Ice-T Taught Us NOT To Trick Off All Our Money

After Ice T and Coco made it through the turmoil a few years ago, Ice T and Coco appear to be stronger than ever as we saw Ice and Coco party it up last week in Vegas. The two have a young baby Chanel and all seems to be well in Ice-T land.

All this talk of Ice-T got us thinking about some of Ice-T’s most classic cuts and one of the first one’s that came to mind was “You Played Yourself.” The track samples “The Boss” by James Brown from the Black Caesar Soundtrack, is produced by Afrika Islam and has a concept that is still relevant today with strip clubs and drug use reaching new levels of popularity.

The song details several tales of people playing themselves.  One person is a 1989 wankster, another is a rapper who doesn’t appreciate his fans and ends up broke, the third is a drug addict that ends up on death row for killing someone out of haste.

TheiceburgIcet

At the time Ice-T said it was his favorite song on the album The Iceberg/Freedom of Speech…Just Watch What You Say. It was a time when Ice-T making headlines for the harsh language used in his raps, but there was a deeper message that could be taken from the project. The artwork from the The Iceberg/Freedom of Speech reflects that frustration as the cover shows a Black man with guns pointed to his head and in his mouth.

“One of my most favorite songs on the new album is a song called, ‘You Played Yourself.’ Because I feel like its like a million ways out here for people to rip you off and play you. But I think the worst thing to possibly do in life is play ya self,” Ice-T said in an interview at the beginning of the interview circa the time of release.

Check out Ice-T’s#### below and don’t “Play Ya Self” this weekend.

Broner Vs. Theophane Fight On Tonight In DC. He Got Warrants? So What…

In a nod to what Adrien “The Problem” Broner’s (31-2, 23KOs) frenemy Floyd “Money” Mayweather (49-0, 26KOs) has experienced in regards to legal matters not putting the breaks on big money televised fight dates, as per Washington D.C.’s finest, Broner’s warrant for felonious assault and aggravated robbery stemming from an alleged altercation outside of a Cincinnati, Ohio bowling alley was issued provincially in the state of Ohio, so D.C. police are under no official all states order or compulsion to arrest Broner and return him to Ohio in order to comply with that warrant.

To hear Broner speak on tonight’s fight versus game opponent Ashley “The Treasure” Theophane (39-6-1, 11KOs) of England, scheduled for live broadcast tonight on Spike TV from the DC Armory in Washington, D.C. at 9PM ET/PT, he isn’t terribly worried about these warrants either as he steps into the ring, or off of a plane post fight into Ohio Buckeye territory: “I have tunnel vision.  It’s fight time.  I’m locked-in until I get the job done,” said Broner at yesterday’s final fight press conference, adding: “I just want to get home to Cincinnati and hold my baby daughter for the first time.  I want to hold and hug my kids and be the family guy.”

As for Theophane, future opponent or future felon, neither label matters much to the Brit, to hear him tell it, when it comes to any “problematic” issues surrounding Broner: “I’m here to make this happen.  Broner can play games, it’s all good.  I’m here on a mission,” stated the focused Theophane in reference to tonight’s battle for the vacant WBA World super lightweight title.

Was Birdman Bluffing With Lawsuit Against Tidal?

According to a Tidal rep, the planned Cash Money lawsuit against Tidal never went through.

“No Cash Money lawsuit was ever served and therefore it was dismissed before it was ever started,”

the rep tells Rolling Stone. Bryan “Birdman” Williams’ Cash Money Records reportedly was suing Jay Z’s streaming venture Tidal for $50 million, claiming that the artist-owned service has no right to host Lil Wayne’s ‘Free Weezy’ album, which arrived exclusively on the platform on July 4th.

Birdman’s claim was the fact that Cash Money owns the exclusive rights to Wayne’s music and the rapper’s contract stipulates that he cannot license his music to anyone else. Tidal, however, has disputed this claim, saying Wayne offered ‘Free Weezy’ exclusively to the service in exchange for a stake in the company. The suit also claimed that the partnership between Wayne and Tidal was a desperate attempt to save the “struggling” streaming service. Well as you know, Lil’ Wayne & Birdman still haven’t completely resolved all of their issues. We hope they get everything settled.

Will Kanye West Give In To This Mural Artist’s Demands?

As Kanye West is quite the narcissist, the photoshopped meme of him kissing himself was pretty funny! An Australian artist named Scott Marsh was inspired by the meme and decided to paint a 20-foot mural on a building wall in Sydney. Apparently Kanye’s camp got wind of the mural and are offering a pretty penny for its removal. Marsh doesn’t seem to be feeling the offer and is countering with his own request. Marsh wants a lifetime supply of Yeezys and an extra $100K. Do you think Ye and his team will give in? I think we all deserve to find someone who will love us like Ye loves Ye.

Bzzz: Bey-Hive Stings Lululemon After Dissing Bey’s Ivy Park On Twitter

(AllHipHop News) Lululemon’s now deleted Tweets dissing Beyonce’s new activewear clothing line Ivy Park appear to have left a mark as the BeyHive has again stung an opponent.

They buy up her concerts tickets, they attacked Amber Rose weeks ago and now Lululemon is the newest victim of the BeyHive.

“Is Ivy Park supposed to be like Lululemon?” Lululemon said to the ire of the crazed Beyonce fans.

“They do say imitation is the best form of flattery. Maybe Beyoncé is so Crazy In Love with our brand, she made her own,” the spandex barons continued.

According to Bey’s Ivy Park website, “Ivy Park is merging fashion-led design with technical innovation. Creating a new kind of performance wear: modern essentials for both on and off the field…. Strong Beyond Measure… Ivy Park.”

While the gear does appear to be designed for working out, its unclear where Lululemon drew the comparisons as the company has yet to elaborate on their claims.

Take a look at the gear below in the YouTube ad for Bey’s gear below. In the ad Beyonce talks about her dedication to working out and her memories about working to her dreams.

“I would wake up in the morning and my dad would come knocking on my door, tell me it’s time to go running. I remember wanting to stop, but I would push myself to keep going. It taught me discipline, and I would think about my dreams. I would think about the sacrifices my parents made for me. I would think about my little sister and how I was a hero for her. I would look at the beauty around me and the sunshine through the trees, I would keep breathing. There are things I’m still afraid of, when I have to conquer those things I still go back to that park. Before I hit the stage I go back to that park. When it was time to give birth I went back to that park. The park became a state of mind the park became my strength. The park is what made me who I am.”

Iggy Azalea Is “Chillin” On Nick Young

Photo via Iggy Azalea’s Instagram

With yet another week of celebrity cheating revealed, many wondered what would be the end result of Iggy Azalea and Nick Young’s relationship after the infidelity admission video leaked. It looks like Iggy & Nick may be taking a break. Nick admitted on video that he cheated on Iggy wit a 19-year-old he met at the club. D’Angelo Russell has expressed his regret for the video he recorded coming out. It looks like Iggy knew that the video may be coming out back in February and told a fan if she has proof of Nick cheating she’d be doing her a favor by posting it. Azalea says she wasn’t trying to marry a cheater. When a fan asked Iggy what was up with her and Nick currently, Iggy replied saying,

“Nothing really. I’m chillin for now.”

They may just be on a small break. Iggy claims cheating isn’t completely a deal breaker, and it should be handled on a case by case basis. Cheating rumors and mystery girls have plagued the couple’s relationship for a while. Maybe they’ll get past it. Is monogamy too hard? Should cheating be that big of a deal?

Did Rihanna Curve Diplo’s Collaboration Request?

In post and delete files, Diplo put up a post that seemed to suggest that bad gal Rihanna curved his suggestion of a collaboration between the two. As we’ve learned over the years, Rihanna is pretty good with the shade, so we wouldn’t be surprised if she let down Diplo with a little bit of classic Ri shade. Would you like to see these two collaborate?

EXCLUSIVE: Smoke DZA Names His Top 5 Pro Wrestlers Dead Or Alive

(AllHipHop Features) The WWE’s annual Wrestlemania is the Super Bowl, Academy Awards, and presidential election of professional wrestling – an event where icons are etched into the annals of sports entertainment. The 32nd edition of Wrestlemania is scheduled to take place in Arlington, Texas on April 3, and more grapplers will certainly use the occasion to cement their legacy in the memories of wrestling fans across the globe.

In preparation for WM32, AllHipHop.com connected with lifelong wrestling enthusiast Smoke DZA to get the Harlem emcee’s opinion on the greatest masters of the squared circle. The creator of the Ringside mixtape series and co-host of the newly launched Heels N Faces podcast explains why the following icons make his list of “Top 5 Pro Wrestlers Dead Or Alive.”

Hulk Hogan

My number 1 is Hulk Hogan. Right or wrong, racist or not, that’s my man. I’m rocking with the Hulkster number one over everybody. Hulk Hogan is the Michael Jordan, the Wayne Gretzky, the Vince Lombardi, the John Madden – whatever face you can think of for whatever sport, he’s that.

Hulk Hogan was my version of Superman or Batman. Wrestling was my version of cartoons, so Hulk Hogan was that for me. I was all about Hulkamania. Even with the “say your prayers” and “eat your vitamins” spiel, I was sold on that. He did more for wrestling – outside of wrestling – than any other wrestler to enter the squared circle.

Ric Flair

He’s the picture of what flamboyance should be when you look in the dictionary. From a wrestler standpoint, he was the total package –  the ultimate heel, could talk on the mic like none other, could draw heat from anywhere, and he was the flyest dude. He was all about Learjets, limousines, Rolexes, and a different suit every time. Ric Flair was a flamboyant motherf*cker. So I definitely give Ric Flair number 2.

Shawn Michaels

Shawn Michaels is my number 3. He was the first undersized guy to be considered World Champion material, and I feel like he held down the WWF during the “Attitude Era” to where it was still able to compete with WCW because they had DX [D-Generation X]. He retired on the highest of the high, so I feel like he probably still has sh*t left in the tank.

Bret Hart

Number 4 would be Bret Hart. He was the ultimate technician. He was the face of Canada before Drake. [laughs] He was the ultimate good guy, and he was the best technical wrestler to ever wrestle in the squared circle.

“Stone Cold” Steve Austin/The Rock

I’d probably let Austin and The Rock share number 5, because they ushered the 90’s into some other sh*t. That whole “Attitude Era” was competing against WCW and going against the grain. I would let them share the 5 spot.

Action Bronson Releases Statement After Being Dropped From GWU Concert Over “Transphobic & Misogynistic” Content

(AllHipHop News) Action Bronson has become the latest rapper to face backlash over lyrics in his music. The Queens, New York native was dropped from George Washington University’s Spring Fling after students launched a Change.org petition calling for his removal from the event. The protesters claimed Bronson “promotes rape, his videos promote violence against women, and his social media promotes violence against the trans community. He is violently transphobic and misogynistic.”

[ALSO READ: Activist Organization Petitions Against Rick Ross For “Rape Lyric”]

The student-run George Washington University’s Program Board decided to remove Bronson from the showcase scheduled for Saturday. The Program Board stated, “We apologize to the GW community for causing distress over the past few days and for attempting to bring an artist who is not consistent with our values of diversity and inclusion.”

Bronson has issued a statement regarding the situation:

To the Students at George Washington University and the public at large:

I’m writing this letter to hopefully bring clarity to some misconceptions about who I am as an artist and as a person. It has become clear to me that things have reached a point which makes me feel the need to address the issues raised so that we can bring some understanding and healing to the table, so to speak. I can’t continue to walk around with the thought that people are thinking these things about me that are far from who I really am.

Five years ago in 2011, I wrote a song called “Consensual Rape” that admittedly contains lyrics and a general sentiment of violence towards woman which I never meant to represent who I am but rather to depict a story. I approach my music as other types of artists approach their work, and I don’t always intend the stories that I tell, the characters that I play in them or the lyrics I lay down to be taken literally. The songs I make aren’t any different than a director creating a movie, or an author writing a book meaning they contain scenes or things happen in them that aren’t meant to be anything but an artistic expression- just a song, a book or a film. I’ve never performed “Consensual Rape” at a concert, and I don’t plan to.

Regardless, I understand that when it comes to musicians, and more specifically rappers, the lyrics I say are taken to heart many times as a representation of my beliefs or true feelings. SO please let me make this very clear: I think rape and acts of violence toward woman are DISGUSTING. I would never condone anything remotely close to that type of behavior, and it’s certainly not what I’m about at all. But, the song in question has caused people discomfort and pain and I’m sincerely sorry about it. It was not my intention to hurt people when I made it years ago, and I certainly will be much more sensitive on this matter moving ahead.

Similarly, there has been some attention placed on a insensitive Instagram post I made years ago regarding me inappropriately labelling someone as transexual and being disrespectful to them in a way that is not ok. I have sat with members of the LGBT community recently in an effort to understand how to avoid being hurtful and insensitive towards these issues moving forward. I have never had any issues with anyone’s sexual orientation or gender transitioning. I’m far, far from perfect and I recognize my flaws and I’m making an effort to grow and be a better human.

Thanks for reading this.

-Action Bronson

A separate group calling itself the GW Students for Common Sense has begun its own petition demanding Bronson be reinstated as a performer at Spring Fling. The group writes, “Don’t allow a vocal minority to ruin Spring Fling for the majority of students. By removing Action Bronson we are limiting free speech and free artistic expression.” As of press time, the “Reinstate Action Bronson” Change.org petition has over 600 signatures.

Songs From Kanye West’s ‘The Life Of Pablo’ Streamed Over 400 Million Times On Tidal

(AllHipHop News) While some observers question whether Tidal’s accounting for the number of streams for Kanye West’s The Life Of Pablo is accurate, the entertainment platform continues to make huge announcements about the project. Tidal initially declared TLOP was streamed 250 million times in the first 10 days, and now new numbers come close to doubling that total.

[ALSO READ: Kanye West’s Remixed & Remastered ‘The Life Of Pablo’ Album Available For Purchase]

The New York Times reports to have received data from Tidal that show songs from Kanye’s most recent musical effort have crossed the 400 million stream mark through Monday of this week. Those numbers are likely to increase rapidly in the coming days since Pablo is now available on other streaming services besides Tidal.

The Life Of Pablo is also available for purchase for the first time. In addition, the single “Famous” is being released to radio as well. Listeners should expect more changes, because Kanye has described TLOP as “a living breathing changing creative expression” where the production, mixes, and track list for the project evolve over time.

Tidal has attempted to separate itself in the highly competitive streaming marketplace by offering its users exclusive content. Besides Kanye’s The Life Of Pablo, the service also exclusively premiered music projects like Rihanna’s Anti, Lil Wayne’s Free Weezy Album, and Big Sean & Jhené Aiko’s Twenty88 as well as programs such as Money & Violence and Cipha Sounds’ The No Small Talk Comedy Series.

K-Ci & JoJo Talk Collaborating With Big Sean, Jhené Aiko & Detail On ‘Twenty88’

(AllHipHop News) Big Sean and Jhené Aiko released their new joint project Twenty88 today exclusively on Tidal. The 8-track project includes a cameo from R&B legends Cedric “K-Ci” Hailey and Joel “JoJo” Hailey on the song “2 Minute Warning.” The Jodeci members spoke with Billboard about the collaboration.

“I live in North Carolina and JoJo lives in L.A. so we had some business [in L.A.] to take care of for Jodeci and K-Ci & JoJo but I was on my way out of town,” explained K-Ci. “At the last moment, right before I was about to head to the airport, our manager Damon Jones calls me like, ‘Yo, K, Big Sean wants y’all to do a song. Can you stay an extra day?’ And I was like, ‘Of course, man. It’s Big Sean. No problem.'”

Jodeci was known to create sensual songs such as “Feenin'” and “Freek’n You.” Sean and Aiko recruited the Hailey brothers to add their classic sexual sound to “2 Minute Warning.”

“Once we got in the studio [with Sean], I was like, ‘What is this song really talking about?’ He started saying some of the raps and I was like, ‘Okay, this is one of them freaky songs right here!'” stated JoJo.

K-Ci and JoJo had the chance to revisit their 1990’s vibe with the Detail produced track. The beat maker also responsible for Lil Wayne’s “How To Love” and Beyoncé’s “Drunk in Love” got a shout out from the North Carolina bred singers.

“Detail was great,” said JoJo.

K-Ci added, “The best part about working with [Detail] was he took me and JoJo back to the old days. He had us singing like the first time Jodeci ever came out. He actually got us singing the way we used to sing. Who does that?”
