Producer Marco Polo Both Embraces & Breaks Tradition With “Port Authority 2” LP

(AllHipHop Features) Six years ago music producer Marco Polo released his critically acclaimed album Port Authority. In the interim the Toronto native has provided tracks for Hip Hop heavy hitters like KRS-One, Masta Ace, Talib Kweli, Large Professor, and Canibus, but now the Toronto native is back with the next phase in the Port Authority story.

Post Authority 2: The Director’s Cut is a project five years in the making. Due to scheduling issues from working on other projects, Polo was not able to complete the album until this year. While the country has undergone two presidential elections and LeBron James picked up back-to-back NBA championships since the first installment hit stores, in Polo’s eyes the quality of the work is paramount to the amount of time committed to completing it.

“I was really trying to make the best album,” says Polo. “The first one was really well received which is a blessing, so I wanted to make sure that if I ever did a follow-up that it was better. There’s no point putting out music if you’re not progressing.”

Many of Polo’s long time musical collaborators make appearances on the LP. Fellow Canadian Hip Hop representative Kardinal Offishal joins with M.O.P.’s Lil Fame and The Lox’s Styles P for “What They Say.” Large Professor, Inspectah Deck, O.C., and Tragedy Khadafi spit bars over “Astonishing.”  On “G.U.R.U.,” Talib and Polo’s biggest artistic influence, DJ Premier, pay homage to the late Gang Starr member.

Even with various voices contributing to many of the tracks there is still a synergy that is evident on each record. This is largely because Polo meticulously selects which emcees to combine together and also because the 10 year vet has not conceded to the practice of just e-mailing beats to artists. He prefers to be in the space with them as they construct their verses.

“A lot of stuff these days is done through the internet and no one really communicates, vibes, or gets in the lab. All that type of s**t makes a real big difference when you’re creating music,” says Polo. “Instead of just having three really popular rappers on a beat for no reason that on paper looks really cool but doesn’t really resonate and last over time, I’m really trying to make songs that you can listen to in 10, 20 years and still be good.”

Polo also broke with the modern norm of limited albums to 12 songs or fewer. PA2 is a 19-track opus that also includes skits showcasing Polo’s “Canadianism” by borrowing vocal samples from the famous Canuck comedy duo of Bob and Doug MacKenzie. The skits, songs, and interlude together total over an hour. The 80 minute running time for Port Authority 2 is an extension of theme established by the album’s subtitle – The Director’s Cut.

“I called it The Director’s Cut because it’s the long version,” explains Polo. “When you go cop a DVD in the store you can get the regular or you can get the director’s cut which is the unedited full version.”

Besides drawing inspiration from filmmaking for the album’s name, Polo also drafted an established star from Hollywood to serve as the narrator for the project. Hip Hop head Michael Rapaport, of Higher Learning fame, opens the album. The director of the A Tribe Called Quest documentary Beats, Rhymes & Life and the Brooklyn-based rap producer first met through Masta Ace and then connected again on social media.

“He started following me on Twitter, and I shot him a message like, ‘Yo, you wanna do some vocal skits for my album?’ He hit me back right away like, ‘Yep. Whatever you need me to do I’ll do it’,” reveals Polo. “It was a surprise and a blessing. He came through the studio and did a bunch of vocal clips and the intro. It really helped tie the whole theme of the director’s cut together.”

Making the decision to go with a sequel to Port Authority and having half a decade to complete it, Polo knows his latest work is going to be judged at a high level. He welcomes the challenge and believes PA2 will satisfy those listeners looking for a complete, authentic Hip Hop project upgraded for 2013.

“It’s definitely going to be appreciated by people who like to pop something in and listen top to bottom,” says Polo. “It’s meant for people that appreciate the art of making an album.”

RelationshipMan: Ghostface Killah Set To Receive “Couple’s Therapy” on VH1

(AllHipHop News) Who said thugs don’t need help too? As of January 2014, Ghostface Killah (birthname Dennis Coles) and his significant other Kelsey Nykole will appear on VH1’s fourth season of “Couples Therapy”.

The show will be moderated by host Dr. Jenn Berman and according to the press release, the couples in the show will go through multiple activities to test their relationship and even “real world” exercises:

The couples will participate in group and individual therapy along with relationship exercises out in the ‘real world’ to see if they can rekindle the love they used to have for one another—or if it’s simply time for them to move on.

Quite ironic that Ghostface would appear on a show about fixing one’s relationship given the wealth of knowledge on relationships he has bestowed on the world over the years. For example, Pretty Tony sent relationship advice to his Twitter followers on Valentines Day two years ago suggesting candlelight dinners, pajama set purchases and more:

Ghost will be accompanied on the show by John & Kate Plus 8 dad Jon Gosselin and his girlfriend Liz Jannetta as well as The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Taylor Armstrong and her fiancee John Bluher.

VH1’s “Couple’s Therapy” is set to premiere  January, 2014 with 8, one-hour episodes.

No Biggie: Community Board Rejects Naming Street After Notoroious B.I.G.

(AllHipHop News) Here comes another case of Misunderstanding Hip Hop, this time featuring Brooklyn Community Board No. 2. Last month, the community board rejected a petition to rename the street Notorious B.I.G. grew up on due to his past, his lyrics and his weight.

The petition was incepted by LeRoy McCarthy to rename 226 St. James Pl in Brooklyn and amassed over 3,000 signatures in under 3 months. Lucy Koteen, a member of the Brooklyn Community Board No. 2 stated that the Notorious B.I.G. did not lead a role model life to warrant such an honor:

He started selling drugs at 12, he was a school dropout at 17, he was arrested for drugs and weapons charge, he was arrested for parole violations, he was arrested in North Carolina for crack cocaine, in 1996 he was again arrested for assault, he had a violent death and physically the man is not exactly a role model for youth,” she said. “I don’t see how this guy was a role model and frankly it offends me.

In an interview with Complex last month (October 18th), McCarthy explained the disconnect between the CB2 and the people in support of Christopher Wallace Way is indicative of a continued misunderstanding of Hip Hop:

Afraid of hip-hop but also illiterate of hip-hop and the culture that hip-hop is rooted in. They kind of lack the ability to have a clear and concise understanding.

WTF News: P### Stars Will be Required to Wear Protective Goggles?

The latest shake up in the p### industry with several pornstars contracting HIV is forcing the industry to take a closer look at how its STD screenings are handled. Draft regulations are being considered by the state of California that would mandate condom use on shoots, and that is understandable. However, Salon reports that another extension of the draft also prohibits e########## onto the genitals, mouth or eyes, and instructs employers to provide performers with protective eyewear to avoid ocular contact with semen.

Via Salon:

Here’s the thing, though: Condoms, and other barrier methods, are technically already required in p###, both during penetrative and oral sex, according to Deborah Gold, Cal/OSHA’s deputy chief for health. So too is eye protection from semen and other bodily fluids. If you’ve ever watched a p### you probably have a sense of just how relatively rarely these requirements are enforced. If instituted, these draft guidelines would actually offer a trial period in which an exception is made for the barrier method requirement during oral sex. (As of 2018, the exemption would be reconsidered and could either end or be extended.)

Regardless, some p### insiders are unhappy with the draft rules, which were initially leaked on an industry blog that is vocally supportive of a condom mandate. Peter Acworth, CEO of the fetish site Kink.com, tells me that the draft regulations “basically criminalize the production of p###” in California. In fact, because of these draft guidelines and AB640, he’s considering selling the Armory, Kink’s infamous San Francisco p### palace. If these Cal/OSHA guidelines are instituted, he says Kink will “have to invest in a warehouse in Nevada or Europe” for production. If that happens, the Armory will likely have to go — and, he says, so will adult productions in California.

In response, Gold said, “The fact is there is a rule right now that they’re supposed to be complying with.” She added that these draft guidelines are an attempt to tailor existing workplace-safety rules relating to blood-borne pathogens specifically to the adult industry.

The draft guidelines do not require the regular STD testing currently instituted by the industry. It does, however, call for employers to provide hepatitis B, hepatitis A and human papillomavirus vaccines to performers. It additionally requires that, in cases of potential STI exposure, p### studios “provide for post-exposure prophylaxis … when medically indicated,” as well as counseling. The 21-page document suggests several other regulatory changes, including cleanup requirements, like providing “plastic coverings or other disposable materials to facilitate cleaning of the work area.”

Can you imagine p### with goggles on? Would you still watch or would the industry tank?

It Was Written: Floyd Mayweather Set To Write Tell-All Book On His Life

(AllHipHop News) Floyd Mayweather presumably lives a life that could fill volumes of novels with entertainment and he is finally ready to prove that fact.

This announcement came two weeks after Mayweather sent a revelatory post on his Instagram profile discussing the many hardships he’s faced in his life:

Mayweather recently shared his condolences to the victims the deadly Typhoon that ripped through the Philippines  on his personal Facebook account. This is a noticably improvement on race relations for Mayweather as he once recorded a racist rant against rival Manny Pacquio back in 2010:

Ill make that mother f—– make me a sushi roll and cook me some rice … we’re going to cook him with some cats and dogs.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Kanye West Didn’t Knock Out Paparazzi in Texas

The internet went nuts after some video footage surfaced of Kanye West allegedly knocking out two paparazzos in Texas but it wasn’t him. The good folks over at Necole Bitchie brought up some excellent points. Check them out:

1) Kanye is not in Austin. He was just in New York performing for Leonardo DiCaprio’s birthday and there is photographic evidence of him arriving in Los Angeles yesterday.

2)Kanye has been wearing the same pair of ripped stone washed jeans for the last two weeks, and the man in the video is wearing skinnies. Not to mention, in the still shots, it’s quite evident that the man’s body shape is different.

3) The men in question are supposed to be paparazzi but there is no camera equipment in sight.

Here’s the video:

That’s definitely not Kanye. His head is way too small, no shots. Plus, if that were Kanye would be in serious trouble considering that he’s already in trouble for previous paparazzi drama. Oh and, Kanye might be rowdy and from Chicago but that man ain’t knocking folks out, not by a long shot.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Big Sean Kicked Out Of G.O.O.D. Music?

They are trying to say that the homey Big Sean was kicked out of Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. According to street yap, the pair got into a fashion fracas in London as a show. And…Big Sean had critical words for his boss, because he used calf leather on his new line of women’s heels. OK….stop. Nah, let me finish this. At this time, Big Sean quickly grabbed the heels and threw them through a window! OK, this is where I stop, because I know there was no argument between Yeezy and Sean. In fact, this is a big rumor that somehow got started as an April Fool’s joke. I’ve seen sites actually running with this as if there was a shred of fact to it. I can’t hate though. I guess I’ve done that too from time to time,

Hip-Hop Rumors: Did Peter Gunz Marry Amina Buddafly so She Can Stay in the US?

That’s the word on the street when it comes to Love & Hip-Hop’s Peter Gunz and Amina Buddafly. Those who have been following the show this season thus far know that Peter Gunz has gotten himself in an extremely messy situation. He claims to love Tara, the mother of two of his sons and a women with whom he has been in a relationship with for 13 years. Tara revealed that Peter had cheated before but she forgave him. Fastfoward to the present…Peter is cheating again. This time, he actually married his artist, Amina Buddafly.

Peter is open about his dirty dog ways but it’s odd that someone who seems to be a professional cheater would actually marry their jumpoff. Peter says that he’s really in love with Amina but still, #wheretheydothatat?

That’s why people are starting to speculate that Peter married Amina so that she could keep her visa and stay in the country.

I reached out to my friend who knows Amina and he claims that Amina has been in the United States legally for over 10 years and that Peter didn’t marry her for a visa. But the thing is, visa’s need to be renewed so…

When I pushed back against that theory said friend didn’t have any further comment.

We know all parties involved won’t admit it if that is the case but I’m just saying, if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck…
