SXSW Update: AllHipHop Brings Out Raekwon and Talib Kweli; Master P and Trae Make Special Guest Appearances

(AllHipHop News) Last night AllHipHop hosted a Breeding Ground Showcase brought to SXSW attendees by G Pen x Crave Online and Sharp Aquos.

While Raekwon and Talib Kweli performed at their already scheduled spots, fans were also treated to surprise sets by Master P, Trae the Truth and Killa Kyleon at the famous Rusty Spurs on 7th Street in Austin, TX.

Kicking off the night was up and coming rapper Chris Skillz who started off the show with a memorable set of storytelling rhymes. He followed up by Eeron Lee, Drew 32, G-Eazy, Satyre, The Airplane Boys.

Following an emotionally driven performance of “Miss Money” by VIP (K-Paul and Pimpin Pen), Master and No Limit Forever took over the stage as Master P performed his hit song”Al Capone” and other hits like “Bout It, Bout It.”

Talib would not be outshined though as his set was just as memorable as Master P’s rocking a packed out house at the peak of the night. Leaving the stage with a classic performance of “Get By” Talib left it all on the stage.

After Talib, West Coast rapper Problem took the stage bringing out Trae the Truth as he performed club banger after banger including his hit song “Like What.”

Clyde Carson continued the show after performing “Slow Down” and few of his other songs that have bubbling on the left coast.

Fillling afterwards Taylor J, Sean Falyon and Rain prepped the crowd for a historic set by Killa Kyleon.

Repping heavy for his home state, Killa Kyleon held the crowd down for a full 30 min set of hits also featuring an appearance with AllHipHop Breeding Ground artist Doughbeezy.

Rae talked to the crowd about how the Wu-Tang Clan came to be as he ran through a host of hits from Only Built for Cuban Linx, 36 Chambers and Wu-Tang Forever.

In addition to the performances, Sharp Television gave away a 60” Sharp Aquos TV to a lucky fan that tweeted about the event and showed how they were living at SXSW.

More video and images as they emerge.

Jay-Z Working on The Great Gatsby Soundtrack, New Song To Be Featureed

(AllHipHop News) Jay-Z’s rap moniker dervies from his old nickname, “jazzy” and he plans to bring both to the score for Baz Luhrmann’s film adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel, The Great Gatsby.

[ALSO READ: Jay-Z, Beyoncé, & Other Celebrities Personal Info Exposed On Website]

After being introduced to Luhrmann by friend and The Great Gastby lead actor Leonardo DiCaprio, Jay-Z collaborated with the famedfor two director on contributing to the music for the film. In a press release, Luhrmann calls Jay-Z’s involvement “a credible and natural fit” given Fitzgerald’s love of jazz and Hip Hop’s current cultural importance:

“Fitzgerald was a pioneer, famed and controversial for using the then-new and explosive sound called jazz in his novels and short stories—not just as decoration, but to actively tell story using the immediacy of pop culture.  He coined the phrase ‘the Jazz Age.’  So, the question for me in approaching Gatsby was how to elicit from our audience the same level of excitement and pop-cultural immediacy toward the world that Fitzgerald did for his audience?  And in our age, the energy of jazz is caught in the energy of hip-hop.  Not only is JAY Z a great artist, full stop, but I had heard that he was a great collaborator.  Leonardo and I were lucky enough to be present in a recording session over two years ago as JAY Z was recording ‘No Church in the Wild,’ and the collaboration grew from there.”

Mr. Carter delves into his involvement in the film’s sound:

“As soon as I spoke with Baz and Leonardo, I knew this was the right project.  The Great Gatsby is that classic American story of one’s introduction to extravagance, decadence and illusion.  It’s ripe for experimentation and ready to be interpreted with a modern twist.  The imagination Baz brought to ‘Moulin Rouge’ made it a masterpiece, and ‘Romeo + Juliet’s’ score wasn’t just in the background; the music became a character.  This film’s vision and direction has all the makings of an epic experience.”

Jay-Z will bring some of the world’s top musical artists to the soudtrack in addition to contributing original music for the soundtrack. The soudntrack will be released through Interscope Records.

The Great Gatsby will be in theaters May 10th, 2013

Royce Da 5’9″ Talks Return to Slaughterhouse, The Detroit Mentality and Eminem

Detroit is a different kind of town. Filled with contradictions, there is the beautiful waterfront views downtown, but in some neighborhoods, there is desolation and desperation. Detroit is a city that is feeling the pinch of its new smaller size after over a million of its residents (including this writer) relocated for warmer economic climates. In fact, the city was recently taken over by the state and appointed an emergency city manager.

Yet, as always with this city, there is hope.

The Detroit hip-hop scene has also seen more than its share of trials. From deaths to broken deals to broken promises, the hip-hop scene is a shadow of its former self; “The Eminem Days.” Established artists like Phat Kat and Guilty Simpson continue to tour, especially overseas. New groups like Clear Soul Forces try to establish their own footing in the shadow of groups like Slum Village, who continue to record and tour, the elder statesmen of the community.

[ALSO READ: Detroit Mayor, Kwame Kilpatrick, Guilty of RICO]

A great glimmer of hope is Big Sean, who with his allegiance to Kanye West has helped put Detroit back on the map, again. I mean, how many times have you found yourself saying, “I give her that “D”/’cuz that’s where I was born and raised in.” The young rapper’s new video, “Guap,” Detroit-ese for money, showcases him riding through his city with a Carnival spin. Big Sean’s newfound prominence through his sophomore album, and hopefully, his own label will be a great win for a new generation of artists from Detroit; shining a major label light on the city, which is still full of talent.

Not that he needs it, but Big Sean also has the support of one of Detroit’s more prominent voices. Royce Da 5’9” has a legendary flow. One-fourth of Slaughterhouse, one-half of Bad Meets Evil, and one-whole of himself, Nickle has smoothly stepped into a leadership role in Detroit, supporting artists by contributing verses and being featured in videos, and recently headlining the 2013 Dilla Day Detroit festivities. Royce continues to represent for the town that he could have long abandoned for the glitz of Hollywood or the hip-hop grime of New York, instead remaining in the place where his skill was born and raised in.

AllHipHop.com recently caught up with Royce Da 5’9”, who recently returned to work with Slaughterhouse after a 6-month self-improvement hiatus, to talk about the current state of Detroit hip-hop, what Eminem is up these days, and his highly-anticipated next solo project.

AllHipHop.com: You and Dilla had some big records together. What was your relationship with him like?

Royce Da 5’9”: It was a strictly working relationship. We didn’t get enough time around each other to build a real close personal relationship. I’m never gonna be one of those dudes that wait ‘til one of the greats pass and then try to act like I’m all close. It was a strict respect work relationship. I always looked up to him, admired him for what he did and he was legendary when he was living to me. We accomplished a lot in a short period of time. Like there’s probably three songs that we did that never came out. Like, we was cutting. He was just one of those dudes that was just real. Let’s just cut records until we come up with something that we wanna put out.

What are you working on now?

I’m working on a solo project right now but I’m just cutting real random. I’m getting myself back used to working as a solo artist. I went years on the road working in a group. It’s something about writing all three verses that just seems like a lot of work now. (laughter) And I just completely quit cold turkey with the liquor. I had been mentally dependent on that for so long. I’m just getting myself back to doing things this way, the natural way. How I started. I’m just taking as much time as I need that’s why I been quiet. I ain’t been in nobody’s way. I haven’t had anything to say about nobody. I just been chillin. Enjoying my solitude. Enjoying my peace. Just looking at everybody. All of the so called friends and everybody. I’m just watching everybody fall off as they may and just enjoying seeing the world through clear, clear eyes. Vision.

I’ve known you for years now and when I first moved to Atlanta, you had a show with Slaughterhouse I was like Royce I need help. You gave me a hundred dollars off your show money. When you did that, it was a small thing I guess in the scheme of things, but it was almost like a big co-sign. That helped me hang in there and now I’m happy and I’m successful and I’m teaching and writing. So I want you to know that I’ve always loved and appreciated you for that.

Likewise. I’m glad I could help out. That’s one thing in Detroit, you know, one thing we never had before which I think is different now is I think we got unity now. And that’s one of the things people can deem us for as a city. You look at all of the moves that these other cities make; we just kinda got to stick together.

I look back on the old days and I still see the losses in a way.

It was partly our losses that we took as a city but then it was partly other peoples gain right in front of us. While we’re yielding all this talent, we’re sitting here looking at these people not saying that they’re any less talented than us but the fact that they’re doing it and then looked like they were overthinking it. They got together. They all put songs out. It didn’t look like nobody was acting funny behind the scenes. So it should be like that here.

In Atlanta, you turn on the radio and they play a throwback record. It could be any record, but, it’ll be a TLC record. It’ll be an Usher record. Any opportunity that they get they’re going to play that Atlanta record. Do you think Detroit Hip-Hop artists will get the love and respect on their hometown radio?

Royce Da 5’9″: At the rate that it’s going. Big Sean was a huge step for us. Big Sean is (not was) a huge step in the right direction for us. I love the way that he supported. I’m not so sure if I’m riding through neighborhoods and I’m feeling the type of support for him that I want to feel. He came out the gate having that though. But you know, the brotherhood, the barbershops. The streets. I know he really don’t make music for the streets. Neither do I, but it just seems like coming from Detroit we should support our own. Then again I’m preaching to people that don’t make records. They don’t make records so what do they care if we got spins. It’s a melting pot. So I mean, the next three years because we have a Big Sean who’s actively trying to put people on. You got Marshall. You got me. You still got the n***as from D12. You got Mr. Porter, he’s very active with working with all kinds of artists. You got Slum Village. You got Black Milk somewhere, probably in Texas somewhere doing some Grammy s###. It’s like a whole lot going on. I predict the next three years to be better than the last three years. Across the board. I talk to people from radio. The newer people that come in. The new PD’s and everybody. The new fresh staff. They all seem to get it. I don’t know if they’re running game. Telling me what I want to hear. I don’t really care. You don’t have to tell me nothing. Show me with your actions. It seems like they get it and we can move forward as a city or continue to be a secondary market. It’s really up to the people that matter.

You have a very close relationship with Eminem. We haven’t heard from him musically in a while. How is he doing?

Great. Great, never been better. Never better. Know that he’s not quiet for nothing. If he’s quiet…worry. Marshall is like that f***ing huge spider on the floor and you wanna act like you not scared of it. And you’re really not that scared of it as long as it’s in your plain view but if you look away and it disappears oh you petrified, that’s Marshall. That’s Marshall and the petrified people are the rappers because you know he’s not going to come back with nothing but something that’s going to make you second guess what you’re doing.

McDonald’s Sued After Child Eats Used Condom

(AllHipHop News) A Chicago mom recently filed a lawsuit against McDonald’s claiming her 3-year-old son ate a used condom found at the restaurant’s  play area.

Anishi Spencer filed the suit Wednesday on behalf of herself and her two children, Jonathan, 3 years old at the time of the incident, and Jacquel, 2, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

Both boys needed medical attention after the oldest coughed up part of the latex condom. Spencer is asking that the fast food giant pay $50,000 for her kids medical bills.

After learning of the lawsuit, McDonald’s released a statement to Huffington Post:

“Providing a safe, clean environment is a top priority for us. This restaurant is no exception. We take these matters seriously and investigate all claims to gather the facts. At the time the lawsuit was filed, we had not completed our investigation and at no time have we given the alleged object in question to examine. These are just allegations and we strongly caution anyone from jumping to conclusions without having the facts.

Because this is now a pending legal matter, it would be inappropriate to further comment or speculate.”

McDonald’s USA

There is a lot not to love about this.

Oprah Says Terrance Howard Misbehaved, Comments on Her “Breasteses”

(AllHipHop News) Dave Chappelle once impregnated her in a sketch, 50 Cent named his dog after her and Terrance Howard commended her “tig ol bitties.” Oprah has been the center of attention for quite a few men but took the time to specifically address Terrance Howard’s recent comments on The Steve Harvey Show.

In a recent interview with Movie Fanatic, Terrance Howard spoke on what it was like working with the billionaire mega-mogul in Lee Daniels’ upcoming film The Butler. The two reportedly have a love scene together and Howard  showed his love:

“To be able to make out with Oprah, to have love scenes with her and those tig ol’ bitties — she’s such a lovely and voluptuous woman. … She’s very, very, very beautiful, and that was wonderful.”

The usually conservative Winfrey got candid with Steve Harvey and got straight to the point “It was supposed to be a little scene,” Oprah tells Steve Harvey ” and because Terrence Howard misbehaved, it turned into a bigger scene and then a bigger scene.”

While some may think the woman who has been the  of wholesome Black women would take offense to such comments, Oprah simply shrugged it off:

“I wasn’t…you know what, some people called me saying they were all offended by it. I go, ‘Well, I do have big breasteses.”

The Butler tells the story of Eugene Allen, a butler who served eight United States presidents over three decades. Oprah, who is appearing in her first movie role not as herself since 1998, plays Allen’s wife Gloria Gaines. The Butler‘s cast is star-studded and includes Mariah Carey, Robin Williams, Forest Whitaker and more. The soundtrack will be composed by the incomparable Quincy Jones.

The Butler is scheduled to hit theaters in the U.S. on October 18th, 2013.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Consequence Talks Fight! Lupe Fiasco And Derrick Rose Win!

WINNERS: LUPE AND DERRICK ROSE

DAMN. I haven’t done a sign the world is coming to an end in a minute. Why? It totally feels like the world is coming to an end. Seriously, a woman strapped her infant child to her and jumped 8 stories to their death. Why? Why’d she strap her kid on? A kid in New York cuts his moms head off AND takes pics of it? A baby in The Chi is shot five times and the father lives unscathed? What the? We got AIDS (America Is Dying Slowly).

But, if there is any sort of nicety to come out of this, Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls has stepped up to help the family of 6-month-old Jonylah Watkins. The super star ball player has agreed to pay for all of the funeral costs. The father was changing the baby’s diaper in the front seat of a mini van with the baby was shot 5 times. Police have no suspect but the father is working with the cops in full. At the present pace, Chicago will top the murder rate from last year, which was over 500.

Shout out to Lupe Fiasco who wrote “Jonylah Forever” in dedication to the slain baby.

Good to see some folks from Chicago caring.

Consequence is talking and he let the guts spill with Hot 97’s Angie Martinez about the fight with Tahiry and Joe Budden. I didn’t listen yet, but I will shortly.

Twitter To Release New Music App

(AllHipHop News) According to reports by Cnet.com, popular microblogging site Twitter is about to join other tech heavyweights Apple, Spotify, and Pandora in bringing music to your mobile devices.

At some point over the last 6 months Twitter bought We Are Hunted, one of the leading music discovery services, and the social media site is planning to use We Are Hunted’s technology to create its own application known as “Twitter Music.”

Users will be able to use Twitter Music to find artists and songs to listen to based on personalized recommendations. The user will then be able to stream the song on SoundCloud right from the app.

Twitter Music will have four tabs: Suggested, Popular, Emerging, and #NowPlaying. “Suggested” will recommend songs based on Twitter accounts a person follows. “Popular” will display trending songs on We Are Hunted. “Emerging” will track rising artists. “#NowPlaying” will show songs tweeted by people you follow when they include that hashtag.

Twitter is the latest social media site to move into music. In 2011, Facebook partnered with Spotify to launch integrated streaming, and Google reportedly signed a deal with Warner Music recently to create a subscription music service. Facebook also recently revamped its News Feed again which now provides a more prominent section that shows the music you listen to.

This could be big move for Twitter which is already the tenth most used website in the world. It may also be a boom for artists who have another way of promoting and sharing their music on a site with over 500 million users. There’s a good chance that musicians can turn those new Twitter followers/listeners into consumers.

A Nielson Entertainment report released last week at SXSW revealed that “Digital Fans” (consumers who get most of their entertainment news from smartphones and tablets) spend on average $363/year on music purchases including buying digital tracks, albums, merchandise, and tickets for live events.

Nielsen Entertainment executive David Bakula estimates that there is also approximately $450 million to $2.68 billion in revenue growth for the music streaming industry currently dominated by Spotify, Rhapsody, and Pandora.

The Twitter Music application may be available on iOS as early as the end of March.

DMC, Doug E. Fresh, & Spinderella To Speak At Youth Conference in ATL

(AllHipHop News) Three of Hip-Hop’s legendary performers are set to travel to Atlanta later this month to participate at the Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s 46th National Keystone Conference.

Darryl “DMC” McDaniels of Run-D.M.C, Doug E. Fresh, and DJ Spinderella of Salt-n-Pepa have been tapped to provide motivational sessions at the youth leadership conference that will host more than 1,800 teens from 157 cities across the country.

This year’s National Keystone Conference (March 21-24) will feature the theme “ATL–All Teens Lead.” The young leaders will take part in various workshops covering topics like bullying prevention, financial literacy, and college preparedness as well as robotics, sports, and film making. Conference goers will also volunteer at service projects throughout the Atlanta area.

“Boys & Girls Clubs of America believes a critical step to ensuring success for teens is to actively engage them and empower them to lead through initiatives like the Keystone Conference,” said Jim Clark, President and CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of America in a press release.

The Keystone Conference will not just be all work and no play for the teens. Several social activities are planned as well as musical performances by American Idol winner Jordin Sparks and Atlanta native B.O.B.

The Boys & Girls Clubs partnered with the Taco Bell Foundation for Teens to create Keystone Clubs – leadership groups for young people ages 14-18 that focus on academic success, career preparation, and community service.

Keystone Club members are just part of the 100,000 teens served by the Taco Bell Foundation every year. The Foundation also awards over 350 educational and career grants and scholarships annually.
