LL Cool J Says Relationship With Sears A ‘Great Success’

LL Cool J has dismissed reports that his relationship with department store Sears has come to an end in a statement to AllHipHop.com.

“My partnership with Sears has been a great success and I look forward to our continued working relationship providing affordable clothing for American families,” LL Cool J said.

Earlier, rumors circulated through a number of traditional media outlets that the line had been closed down due to poor sales.

A representative for Sears also dismissed the reports and revealed that there is more to come with the clothing line.

“Sears values its partnership with LL Cool J and will continue its commitment to providing the LL Cool J collection to its customers, both in-store and online,” added Tom Aiello, division vice president, Sears Holding. “The collection is characterized as affordable, iconic apparel for the family and represents an important breakout brand in Sears’ wide assortment of tees, denim and hoodies.”

The Fall line was showcased in February during Fashion Week and various media outlets will get a sneak peak of the rapper’s holiday collection in one month.

The Sears/LL Cool J partnership started last September when Sears rolled the line out across 450 of its Sears stores.

LL Cool J’s line includes juniors, kids and young men’s clothing.

KRS-One Sponsors Atlanta Hip-Hop Appreciation Week

KRS-One’s Temple of Hip-Hop has announced that this year’s Hip-Hop Appreciation Week will be held in Atlanta, Georgia.

For 2009, organizers are touting “cooperation” as the main theme for Hip-Hop culture adherents to utilize in fighting to “de-criminalize the images of Hip-Hop that are portrayed by the mainstream media.”

Since Hip-Hop has its roots in block parties that required the participation of the entire community, The Temple of Hip-Hop aims to bring that same community awareness and involvement back to the culture.

“Now is the time, more than ever, for cooperation in our communities,” the organization explained in a statement. “The Hip Hop community should work together to organize our people, our knowledge and our resources as we continue to work through the challenges we are facing domestically and globally!”

In accordance to this mantra, organizers will be pushing attendees to network with each other, volunteer for non-profit agencies, promote the positivity of Hip-Hop, and start neighborhood watch/community beautification committees.

The Appreciation Week will run from May 15-24 in the Atlanta Metropolitan area, and feature open mics, youth seminars, volunteer walks, parent/child initiatives, and performances from KRS-One, B.o.B., Yella Wolf, and Playboy Tre.

Lil Wayne Sues Producer Over Concert Song

Cash Money Records rapper Lil Wayne is taking the offense with a new lawsuit against a producer who used a sample for a song without permission from the original artist.

According to the suit, which was filed last week, Lil Wayne’s lawyers claim Coconut Creek, Florida-based Rebel Rock Productions Inc. produced the rapper’ song “I Feel Like Dying” and was responsible for obtaining any necessary licensing agreements.

The new lawsuit comes months after a suit was filed against Lil Wayne last year.

In that suit, the rapper was accused of copyright infringement as it claimed the entertainer did not garner permission to sample Karma-Ann Swanepoel’s folk song, “Once,” on “I Feel Like Dying.”

Thus far, there has been no response from Rebel Rock regarding Lil Wayne’s claims.

A telephone number for the company, which does not have a lawyer named in court records, has been disconnected.

Although “I Feel Like Dying” was not featured on Lil Wayne’s#### album, Tha Carter III, an attorney for the song’s publisher, Urband & Lazar, maintained that the song was used to promote the album.

The rapper is accused of performing the song in concert in addition to having allowed fans to download it for free on his website.

Lil Wayne’s lawsuit against Rebel Rock is the latest legal situation involving the New Orleans native.

In March, Lil Wayne was ordered by a federal magistrate to turn over financial records for Tha Carter III, to Urband & Lazar Music Publishing.

Last year, Tha Carter III song “Playing With Fire” was at the center of a copyright infringement and unfair competition, lawsuit filed against Lil Wayne by Abko Music Inc.

As a result, the tune was taken off the track list of Tha Carter III on all online music stores.

It was replaced with “P***y Monster,” a song produced by rapper David Banner.

You Know I Got Soul: De La Soul

It would seem like a no brainer to feature De La Soul in an edition of You Know I Got Soul considering “soul” is in their name. The legendary Hip-Hop group has been a part of our audio experience for over two decades. With untouchable punchlines coupled with smooth vibes, De La Soul has not only mastered Hip-Hop music, but they have enhanced it. Now the crew is out to take on a brand new charge – athletics. Earlier this year, De La joined forces with Nike on their NIKE + campaign, which matches sports with rap in a way that’s never been done before – or at least unintentionally. Artists make music designed for the sport. While De La Soul was busy crafting sounds for the runners (the athletes not the production duo), we caught up with them for their individual Top 5 for taking it down a notch and breaking away from the rap. Check out how many of their favorites are the same; it’s no wonder how they’ve worked so well together for so long.

Trugoy

1. Coldplay

I like the writing. I think the first time I probably heard

Coldplay was when “Yellow” was in a movie soundtrack. So I found out what that

was and said let me look this up and see who these guys are. Then I found that

album, Parachutes, and was hooked since

then. I just like the writing a lot. I like the fact that Parachutes sounded more like it was piano written, piano-based

songs. Then the album that followed [Viva La Vida] was different. They started writing songs, you

know, maybe on a guitar. I think the writing is incredible to me and the songs

are just like deep but not deep where it’s like far gone and spacey. It’s

just…cool tunes.Clocks – Coldplay

2. Fela Kuti

Every time I hear a song I just riddle myself with that one

question like “Did James Brown get his style from Fela? Did he like catch the

funk vibe from Fela or did Fela catch the funk vibe from James?” I know a

couple of engineers who worked with Fela and they’ve often said that Fela spoke

of James borrowing the style or hearing him first. So when I listen to his

music, I just sit there and kind of listen to the contrast of what James was

doing and what Fela was doing and try to figure out you know one of those what

came first the egg or the chicken. So that’s what I sit down and enjoy with

Fela, outside of just loving the music and the sound and how he arranged the

music. SWEG BE & PAKO – FELA KUTI

3. Devo

Devo reminds me of the De La and the Ultramagnetics of their

style, their genre, which ever way you want to put them. They’re just one of

those groups that you can’t really place a finger on. Whatever you want to name

them…call them Hardcore. You know, whatever you want to call them. They always

just stood out and had their own style and sound and obviously a look to it and

an attitude to it. I think it’s one of those bands that got not only some great

quirky sometimes weird tunes together but they also brought an attitude that

made you want to believe in it as well. They lived the sound of their music as

well. When you saw them it was always quirky, always different, always kind of

interesting. Whip It – DeVo – Devo

4. The Police

I love The Police. I love Sting’s voice. I like how they

often had that Reggae influence. Whether it was Ska or some Rock in there, they

always had that kind of like Reggae feel to it. Obviously being from the UK and

getting that Jamaican culture vibe in their music was probably something they

naturally grew up with so I just enjoy the tunes. Always great records. I love

Sting as a solo artist as well, but The Police have always had great joints.Every Breath You Take – The Police

5. Aretha Franklin/Chaka Khan (TIE)

Good tunes. Amazing voices. Their influence on Hip-Hop as

well. A lot of people don’t know people have sampled Aretha Franklin and

obviously sampled Chaka Khan. For me my greatest Aretha Franklin tune is

probably “Bridge Over Troubled Waters”. I just love how that record sounds…her

voice, the organs and just the background singers as well. Just one of the

greatest tunes…not as popular as Respect or Pink Cadillac, “Bridge Over

Troubled Waters” is I guess like a Gospel tune as well. When I want to feel

good I put that tune on. So Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan…two greats. Two great

women divas in the soul R&B category. All Good – De La Soul feat. Chaka Khan

Posdnuos

1. Stevie Wonder

Just growing up and listening to his music…being young and

not realizing who [Stevie] is or hearing my father playing his earlier music.

Then of course growing up and getting older and hearing certain albums like Songs

in the Key of Life…that album was just an

incredible album to me. Every song resonated with me. So I mean from there

anything that he pretty much did, a lot of the different music he did…it’s just

timeless…stuff that I could relate to now but even then. I mean as a child for

me to be a kid and someone’s relating to me, it felt good. Stevie Wonder – Superstition – Stevie Wonder

2. The Police

I always loved Sting’s voice. Once again being young and I’m

like wow these white boys are doing this incredible Reggae Ska-ish type stuff,

you know a lot of their early stuff. So it was cool and continuing to…well now

continuing to just grow and release music it’s just so good. I mean “Voices

Inside My Head” was just one of the most amazing records. I remember being

young and WBLS in New York playing it all the time and it was just this song.

What actually blew me away about that song was it really wasn’t any words. It

was just more like them just chanting “voices inside my head” but the music and

the groove and the beat was catchy. So I mean like that was just another reason

to move me to them and then I just became a straight fan and whenever I hear

they’re coming out with something I always look forward to hearing it. The Police – Voices Inside My Head

3. Earth Wind and Fire

One of the most amazing bands personally for me…just

soulfully from Phillip Bailey to Maurice White to just the incredible brass

section. I mean when I was younger I used to try to play a little trombone so

that lead me to just even relate to them more and the sound that they had.

Honestly what they were talking about even for me to realize then like it

wasn’t always about partying or love. They would go as far to talk about the

sun or just different things…terrestrial versions of things. It was just cool

and their covers were just so amazing…the pyramid and all those great things

like that. Funny enough for us to be in De La Soul now and when we came out and

those are the things you realize from behind the scenes that labels paid

attention to like you know are they going to relate to your record cover, this

that and the third. Now to just think like yeah when I was young those are some

of the things that I’d probably just listen to the music and I could just

glance at the cover and stare and find different things for days. Earth, Wind & Fire – September – Earth, Wind & Fire

4. Coldplay

I really love their last album and just even once again when

they were introduced to the scene and getting more into them, it just felt good

to hear their music. Especially as you said we are Hip-Hop artists and I think

De La Soul has always been very much into using and gaining inspiration from

other groups outside of Hip-Hop to bring that into what we’re working with. So

I mean for me, Coldplay is kind of the up-to-date version of that. Being able

to listen to a lot of the groups back in the day and being like wow this is

what I’m going to take inspiration from for this song. Coldplay to me in

arrangements and what they’re talking about in the music…it draws the same for

me.Viva La Vida – Coldplay

5. Billy Joel

Once again it was just to have something standout as he was

just a great songwriter. Hearing the songs that he’s writing about, him at the

piano, a lot of times when it’s not even so much a lot of other instruments

around him…some of the most incredible songs have just sent chills through my

spine just listening to the words and how he manipulates words to use in the

story he’s telling and I definitely as a emcee try to do the same. We Didnt Start The Fire – Billy Joel – Billy Joel

Maseo

1. Ozomatli

They’re just a really great, great soulful Latin band. I

can’t even really say they’re all just Latin. They really do a wide scope of

different styles and they’re just very soulful. It touches you. Something about

the musicians in the band as a collective when they rock together whether they

perform or make records together, it touches me. It just touches my spirit.

Whether I understand it, whether the music is in English or not, Ozomatli is

just incredible. They’re really incredible. I was first introduced to them when

Common did a song with them. That was the first time I was really introduced

and then you know the album around that time and that’s what made me really get

into them. Cant Stop – Ozomatli

2. Curtis Mayfield & 3. Donny Hathaway

I really been listening to a lot of his [Curtis’] music

lately. Both of them have really been speaking to my spirit. Some difficult

times I been going through and their music really is timeless…I can just

totally relate to a lot of it. Especially the things Curtis Mayfield’s talking

about because a lot of my family overall comes from a lot of those rough

conditions. In the last two years I been reaching out to my family, beyond like

my first cousins, and we all been connecting on many different levels and we

all been reminiscing of our childhood. So Curtis Mayfield’s music is like the

soundtrack to our lives. And recent discussions between me and one of my

cousins keep resorting back to like Curtis Mayfield music that was around our

lives at that time. I also been really like into discovering what different

artists sampled that I didn’t even know came from Curtis. Curtis Mayfield – Superfly – Curtis Mayfield

4. Spam Allstars

They’re like a funk-soul-Latin band. Kind of in the Fela

Kuti vibe. They’re kind of on that vibe. They’re really new; they’re out of Del

Ray Beach, Florida. Their music is on iTunes and it’s really hot to me. I saw

them at this little club in Florida. I like to go to these little cool-out

spots that kind of remind me of like The Apartment…of APT [in New York City].

You always bound to come up on some new, fresh talent…or something new and

fresh period. It happened that [Spam Allstars] happened to be showcased in

there one night and I was into it. I came back to the crib and I realized their

music was on iTunes and I bought an album. It’s bangin! I still search for

music you know? True essence of a DJ.

I got to find out what’s making me feel good and try to

incorporate it in my style of DJing. But Spam Allstars, check them out. For

real. I don’t even know these guys. On some real s**t, they didn’t even know I

was in the spot. I just happened to be there on some incognito tip and just

tried to be a regular spectator and I came up on some good s###. I didn’t go up

to them like “yo, I’m Maseo”, none of that crap…I ain’t do none of that. I went

back to the crib and was like alright, let me check them out online and see

what it is. That’s really what it is because the show was hot! Ochimini – Spam AllStars

5. Stevie Wonder

An inspiration to our lives. A man within a vision…he was

seeing beyond what we all could see. The timeless music he’s made like…he just

keep popping up on my playlist constantly. You see Stevie in the current days

or recent days and he’s sounding fresh and he’s sounding current and to go back

and listen to the old material, it’s refreshing…it’s all still relevant, it’s all

still brand new. All of that coming from a person who’s been blind their entire

life. You seeing the world from inside. Think about the s**t he’s singing

about. Look at it…you can actually picture the words he’s saying and that’s

coming from someone who doesn’t have any sight. My kids dig Stevie Wonder. My

daughter’s eight and it’s not because her dad’s in music or nothing like that…it’s

all on her own discovery. Hearing songs like “Do I Do” because she’s just kind

of hanging out with her grandmother. Stevie Wonder – Sir Duke – Stevie Wonder

Hip-Hop Rumors: Rick Ross Sales Are HERE! Cops Rape Drunk Woman! 50’s Return?

DISCLAIMER:

All content within this section is pure rumor and generally have no factual info outside of what the streets have whispered in our ear. Read on.

THE DAILY TWO SENSE

I am so bored right now, it doesn’t make any sense! Hmmmm…wondering if its time for me to bow out with grace! Anyway, there’s still a drought in the rumor land. There is a lot of BS and pics and vids out there. I have some of that on here. Anyway, shout out to Rick Ross…the Soundscan is in! See it below!

Lets get onto the rumors!

SOMEBODY’S SMASHING CIARA!? WHO!?

I know that was so rude to say, but Darius hit me up and gave me the scoop on a recent interview from Ciara. Before CiCi was an admitted virgin…check out what she said when somebody ask about her “cookies.”

wasup illseed, u said- if i see something, say something…well i didnt really see it but matta-fact i heard it. Ciara wuz on our local radio station power98 in charlotte, nc and dey wur having her go through fan mail and answer questions…well one of the craziest questions came out on the air, the question was “Ciara yo song goodies was a hit, but have the goodies been unlocked now?” i was like woooowww…after he finished dat question her manager sandy interuppted da show and was like she has to go, Ciara said “no, i can answer dat”….she said dat she made the song when she was young and all she has to say is “Yes i have grown up” Her manager jumped on again and was like she has to go..the radio station thanked CiCi and her manager, CiCi was polite but da manager was mad…Shout out to POWER 98 for being real wit da ppl..

DIPSET REUNION UPDATE!

I don’t know who talked some sense into Cam, but it looks like the crew is coming back like a reported a week or so ago. Here are some quotes from Juelz and Zeke:

Zeke:

“I just gotta tell you, stay tuned for Summer Jam,” he declared. “Like I said, it is what it is right now. N*ggas ain’t talking to each other over simple sh*t, nobody killed nobody took no money from nobody, it ain’t even no beef…This is a family dispute…We gonna be jammin’ in the summer.”

Now that they all have crews, they are going to be stronger. Per Juelz:

“Ah, man, it’s beautiful. That was the whole plot. For everybody, for all of us to have, how can I put it? Roc-A-Fella, Bad Boy and Death Row, we all bosses in our own right. We got the swag, we got the energy. That’s what I feel the whole idea of it is. To get us to the point where everybody’s team is solidified and all the bosses are still comfortable with each other and we can all come to the table. Roc-A-Fella, Death Row and Bad Boy, imagine what the tour would have been like.”

SOUNDSCAN IS IN TODAY!

So, the day is here and we’ll see what Rick Ross moved in terms of his units sold. Sales don’t matter to me. I think the album is really good and I like it based on the artistic merits. I’m not concerned with his past too much. I only know a couple rappers that actually live what they say totally. 50 Cent must have done a number on Ross in NYC though. I got this letter…well its very telling. LOL!

Illseed-

I actually work at the Best Buy at 44th and 5th where the Rick Ross signing was…. and the pictures didn’t lie, really there was about ten people that came through for it. It was like when Bobby Valentino came, and we, as employees, we given the opportunity to chill with him before the signing with “only” ten spots available… No one jumped on it. And, to be fair, with Bobby Valentino, we didn’t have as much promotion. But for Rick Ross, he had promo in our windows for a good two weeks leading up to it. Personally, I’m not a fan (though I tried, I bought Port of Miami, and vowed to never buy a Rick Ross album ever again), and maybe New York just isn’t his market….

PS – Kim Kardashian looks better with dark hair.

THE SALES ARE IN!

Here are the #’s that I have for the Hip-Hop and R&B artists! BAWSE IS NUMBER ONE…I thought Asher would do bigger numbers. Shout out to SeanJohn81!

50 CENT IS WORKING ON IT!

An insider emailed me with some information that I pretty much assumed. Check it out here.

“The reason why 50 isnt responding to Ross right now is b/c they stopped until his album releases. Once his album releases, it will be back to normal. I already know what they will compare his lack luster sales to BUT if he sells more than expected then I dont know. But thats what it is! But you didnt hear it from me…. I know all them dudes. But this isnt really a rumor because if you know music then you know Ross better do wayyyyyy better than Kiss did on his album with no radio, no video and he did 130K! They put at least 2M for Ross. At least!”

JAY-Z’S NEW ACT!

I keep hearing about Jay-Z signing this group and that rapper. But, the fact remains; Jay’s not even putting any of these acts out yet. I’m wondering what’s the time frame on this? When is Jay’ album coming out!? Oh sorry! Jigga has reportedly signed British girl group Sugababes to his Roc Nation imprint. I never heard of them, but I heard that they are all the rage in the UK. The group recently flew to LA to record and stuff. Lets hear some music!

IT’S DEEPER THAN SNACKS!

I tried not to post this, but its just too funny.

People are too much. LOL!

THE NOTORIOUS B.U.M.

I think I posted this guy up before, but this is a rare performance indeed. I present The Notorious B.U.M.

ILLSEED’S QUICKIES

LOL. The LAPD thinks they SLICK! Rihanna requested that the Los Angeles police return jewelry worth about $1.4 million that was seized the night Chris Brown pummeled her.

This ain’t funny, but it is. I heard Atlanta wasn’t too kind to Mike Jones. He was performing and he allegedly said, “This is gonna be a top 10 single real soon” and then some White guys says, “Yeah f***ing right, top 10 single, where at? Indonesia?” Flagrant! Read the new interview with Mike right here!

Naomi Campbell is retiring. She got that Russian boyfriend with a billi in the bank.

T.I. did not go to jail yet. I think he goes in sometime in May. He was sentenced. I thought that does mean you go to jail, but I guess not.

Rumor has it Zab Judah has signed to Floyd Mayweather’s boxing promotions company.

GINUWINE AIRS OUT R.KELLY

What was it like working with Aaliyah:

Ginny didn’t hold back in a recent interview where he dissed R. Kelly.

“Taking shots at Kelly? I think he deserved it. I mean, you don’t do that. You don’t do that man. I just feel like if you’re going to mess with somebody, mess with somebody your age. Okay, they said it wasn’t him, so if it was true, you mess with somebody your age.”

I bet somebody is going to say he’s just hating.

SIGNS THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN END

This is getting crazy like a fox with rabies. The NYPD is at it again! WOW. If these guys were a criminal they were be like a serial offender. Sorry, good cops, but the bad apples are running things now. According to police, a pair of cops were called to help a drunk woman get home safely. Guess what happened instead? She got raped by one of the cops while the other one played lookout. YEP. How two people decide this is a good idea is beyond me. They allegedly took the woman home and laid her face down, covered in vomit and raped her. On Tuesday the coppers pleaded not guilty to rape, burglary and official misconduct. A cabbie called 911 when the drunken 27 year old couldn’t get herself out of the car. They probably didn’t know they were on camera. They went in the house, left. They returned 34 minutes after leaving the first time. This is when the rape allegedly occurred. These NYPD cops are staring at 25 years in jail for this.

Sorry Obama haters and super-duper conspiracy theorists. There is still some cool stuff going on. US First Lady Michelle Obama, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and others like actress Cicely Tyson unveiled the bust of Sojourner Truth in Emancipation Hall of the US Capitol on April 28, 2009 in Washington. Sojourner Truth was an 19th century American slave, abolitionist, and women’s rights activist who is best-known for her speech, “Ain’t I a Woman?”. This rocks!

Irv Gotti Returns To VH1; Bets On New Artist ‘Newz’

Fans of VH1’s Gotti’s Way have less than a week left until the popular reality show returns with its second season, the Viacom-owned network announced today.

Gotti’s Way 2, which debuts Monday night (May 4) at 10:30pm ET/PT, continues to follow music mogul Irv Gotti as he navigates the challenges in his personal and professional life.

At the forefront of the show’s storyline is, of course, Gotti’s fight to bring his label The Inc. back to its glory days.

In addition to the company’s established roster, including crooners Ashanti and Lloyd, as well as rapper Ja Rule, Gotti’s Way 2 will introduce the label’s latest addition, Brooklyn-born rapper Newz.

Believing that Newz will not only revive The Inc., but the industry as a whole, Gotti is determined to do whatever it takes to make his latest protégé a success.

While Irv builds his empire, his estranged wife Deb continues to fight for a life that is dependent on Irv.

Last season, the couple struggled to come to a better arrangement than their mostly one-sided open relationship.

This season, Deb seeks the assistance of a therapist who will help her develop more independence by understanding the factors that have contributed to her complex relationship with her husband.

In the process, Deb may just come to find that the existing arrangement is the best one for her family.

Despite their differences as a couple, Deb and Irv Gotti remain committed to raising their three children with the most stable environment possible.

And now is when that environment is most needed, as their two oldest, Angie and Sonny, enter exciting new phases of their lives.

A graduating high school senior, Angie has started the process of selecting colleges and deciding on her future career. She’s also entering the world of dating.

Thirteen-year-old Sonny’s basketball career is picking up, while both he and baby brother JJ, 10, continue to go through the traditional growing pains that can only be accentuated by their father’s lifestyle.

Gotti’s Way originally debuted on VH1 in October 2007.

The show is created and produced by Cris Abrego for 51 Pictures, and is executive produced by Jeff Olde, Jill Holmes and Kristen Kelly.

Hot 97 Denies Flex’s Interscope Boycott

Representatives for Hot 97 have denied popular DJ Funkmaster Flex’s claims that he would no longer be playing records released by Interscope Records, home to superstar rappers like Eminem, 50 Cent and Dr. Dre.

On his April 21 show, Funkmaster Flex blasted executive Nino Cuccinello at Interscope Records/A&M/Geffen, which also has artists like Soulja Boy, Lady Ga Ga and Akon on the roster.

“New York I am talking to a person who makes decisions who does things up there, moving funny style,” Funkmaster Flex fumed. “Nino is moving so bad. If you are anywhere in the tri-state area, I’m talking about people New York that control the music business and they control certain artists that they do not want you to see, but they want the pop stations to have. This is where I come in.”

That’s when Flex apologized to Interscope executive Step Johnson and stated that he would not be playing any Eminem or Dr. Dre records.

In today’s New York Daily News (April 28), Hot 97 Program Director E-Bro Darden said Flex’s statements were entertaining radio that had simply gone too far.

“We’ve never held back on a whole label’s music,” Darden told The New York Daily News. “And we won’t.”

Darden stated that Hot 97 maintained good relationships with various labels and joked: “we had to muzzle Flex, … people know a lot of what he says is showmanship, but that went too far.”

In related news, Funkmaster Flex’s Custom Show and Bike Tour 2009 will stop in Louisville Kentucky this Sunday (May 3).

Miami rapper Rick Ross will make an appearance at Flex’s car and bike show, which is taking place at the Louisville Water Tower from 12-8PM.
