(AllHipHop News) “He’s become a symbol for criminal justice reform,” declares Lester Holt on his NBC Nightly News segment on Meek Mill. The veteran journalist spoke to the jailed rap star about his upbringing, legal situation, and post-prison intentions.
“It was always a thought in the back of my mind that ten years of probation would bring me back to prison,” said Meek over the phone.
The “Dreams and Nightmares” spitter is presently serving a 2-4 year sentence in Pennsylvania for probation violation. There have been accusations the judge presiding over the case is biased against Meek. Also, reports confirmed the original arresting officer was on a list of cops with a history of misconduct and they were secretly barred from testifying in court.
Meek has garnered significant support from fans and celebrities. This week has seen fellow Philly rapper AR-AB, longtime collaborator Wale, and New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft publicly back the 30-year-old father.
The city’s new District Attorney, the governor, and the supervising probation officer have all expressed approval of Meek being released. There are rumors he could be out as early as next week.
“I think God delivered me a job to helping people, helping minorities that come from these situations like myself,” Meek stated when asked what he plans to do when he gets out. “I say don’t show me no pity because this is my life. This is what I’ve been going through. And I think God put me in this position to be able to do a show with Lester Holt and open up eyes for other young black men.”
