Lil Kim May Be Facing Lawsuit For Allegedly Stealing Selfie Pic

(AllHipHop News) There have been a string of  copyright lawsuits filed against entertainers the last few months. Ludacris, Robin Thicke, Nicki Minaj, and others have been accused of stealing the work of unrecognized artistic creators, but the latest potential intellectual property case involving a music artist actually has nothing to do with music.

TMZ reports that Lil Kim is being pursued by professional make-up artist Samantha Ravndahl for using her self-portrait on the rapper’s official social media sites and cover art. Ravndahl claims she posted the photo on Reddit under the user name Sssamanthaa, and Kim started using it without her permission.

The creepy pic of a zombie-like women appeared on the Soundcloud cover for Kim’s latest single “Dead Gal Walking.” Kim even added a copyright watermark to the pic when she uploaded it to her Instagram page.lil kim instagram

Ravndahl apparently reached out to the Brooklyn native’s representatives for compensation, but after initially being rejected she was later told Kim “works slowly.” She says Kim continued to use the picture even after contacting her.

Ravndahl has not officially filed a case against Kim yet, but she is looking for some type financial payment. A suit is still a possibility. She has been seeking recommendations in Reddit’s legal advice section.

Kendrick Lamar Names The Emcee Who He Sees As His Biggest Competition

(AllHipHop News) Despite all the recent attention placed on the perceived competition between Kendrick Lamar and Drake, K. Dot says he is less concerned about rappers outside his TDE family because the competitive nature inside the camp is what really keeps him on his toes, and Kendrick names one particular Black Hippy member he calls “a problem.”

“[Jay] Rock always been big brother, Rock always had that ‘urrgh.’ So when we got on the mic with Rock, you already know what time it is,” Kendrick told MTV News. “You gotta do what you gotta do, because he’s gonna smash it, and I’m glad that the world is finally recognizing it because he is a problem for sure.”

While Kendrick has become the breakout star from Black Hippy, Jay Rock was the first TDE artist to build a national buzz thanks to his 2008 single “All My Life (In the Ghetto)” featuring Lil Wayne and will.i.am. The song was included on Rock’s Follow Me Home album which was TDE’s first official LP released in stores.

“We look at [Rock] as the n***a that started it up, that gave us our starter kick, introduced us to the game,” adds fellow Black Hippy member Schoolboy Q. “We didn’t go on the road until we went with him.”

Epic Fail of the Day: Man Named “Batman bin Suparman’ Jailed For Three Years

This is why we should be mindful of what we name our kids. You can’t have a superhero name but be up to no good.

A Singapore man named Batman bin Suparman (his name translates to “Batman son of Superman”) became an Internet star a while ago after a picture of his ID card surfaced. He’s back in the news after getting sentenced on Monday to three years in jail on various charges.

Via Huffington Post:

Batman was arrested in August, after surveillance video showed him stealing the equivalent of $400 from a store, according to court documents obtained by the AFP.

In addition, Batman stole the ATM card of his brother, Nurazman Suparman, and fraudulently used it to make purchases totally about $680, according to Channel News Asia. He also pleaded guilty to unrelated counts of theft and heroin consumption.

Some fans of Batman have expressed their dismay on the “Batman Bin Suparman Fan Club” Facebook page, lamenting that their hero “has fallen to the Dark Side.” Others have called for someone to break him out of jail.

Sounds like his name should have been Joker bin Lex Luthor. Sorry, couldn’t resist.

Young Jeezy To Def Jam: Either Get My Album Right Or I’m Leaking It

(AllHipHop News) Twitter has given a voice to the voiceless, a name to the nameless and an international microphone for the loquacious celebrities to vent. Young Jeezy decided to indulge in social media venting to address his distaste with how Def Jam has handled his as-of-yet untitled new album.

In his Twitter diatribe, Jeezy claimed that there was mismanagement on his upcoming album on the part of Def Jam:

Jeezy also implied that Bary Weiss, current Def Jam CEO/Chairman of The Island Def Jam Music is not working as hard as former CEO/Chairman, L.A. Reid:

In the end, Jeezy pulled the one move every artist who has felt they are constrained by their label has threatened to do since the dawn of (record business) time: Leak the album himself.

Jeezy announced that his upcoming album was “coming soon” in September and the song “In My Mind” would serve as the first single. The last Jeezy song to chart on Billboard was 2012’s “R.I.P.” featuring 2 Chainz.  A point of contention for Jeezy could be that his rival and labelmate Rick Ross’ new album, Mastermind has not only been announced and promoted with singles but has had multiple release dates before its final December 17th date was selected.

(AllHipHop News) Smif-N-Wessun, briefly known as the Cocoa Brothaz, had a crazy 1996 that involved lost changed identities and cigarette smoking prevention. At Cipha Sounds’ Take It Personal Hip Hop improv show, the legendary duo spoke on their infamous name change in 1996 and how they tried to stop 2pac from smoking.

In 1996, Smif-N-Wessun(along with rest of Boot Camp Click) recorded an album entitled One Nation with 2Pac and according to Tek, he employed a few methods to stop ‘Pac from smoking cigarettes. 1996 also marked the year the group had to change their name to Cocoa Brothaz after a legal dispute with arms manufacturer Smith & Wesson for quite a hilarious reason according to Tek:

They were actually suing us. They said we were confusing the consumer of buying guns and buying CD’s.

UCB actors Phil Jackson, Lydia Hensler and Sean Diston took that and turned it into a hilarious scenario involving an interesting armed robbery.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Are Kendrick Lamar And Schoolboy Q Fighting?

Hmmmmmmmmm..this is a questionable rumor. I mean VERY, VERY questionable but since it deals with the crew of the moment, TDE, we gotta talk about it. This comes from another “crew” in media, which is MediaTakeOut so take it for what you will. Below is the math:

November 12, 2013: You know how they say that it’s ALWAYS A WOMAN that breaks up a great group . . well it look slike it might be happening AGAIN.

According to the streets Kendrick Lamar and Schoolboy Q – both leading members of the “Black Hippy” movement in hip hop – have ISSUES. Word is that Schoolboy Q started messing around with some ASIAN GIRL that Kendrick was seeing . . . and Kendrick is ALL IN HIS FEELINGS over it.

This may have something to do with the EMOTIONAL TWEET that Kendrick sent out this weekend – where he blasted “friends” for being “unappreciative. ”

Kendrick needs to stop being so SENSITIVE . . . SHEESH!!

Their words, not ours. I find this particularly interesting, and not in a good way, because Kendrick supposedly clowned Drake for being sensitive.

And there you have it.

“They keep us talking, but if we stop talking about them then they should worry!” -illseed.

Producer Marco Polo Both Embraces & Breaks Tradition With “Port Authority 2” LP

(AllHipHop Features) Six years ago music producer Marco Polo released his critically acclaimed album Port Authority. In the interim the Toronto native has provided tracks for Hip Hop heavy hitters like KRS-One, Masta Ace, Talib Kweli, Large Professor, and Canibus, but now the Toronto native is back with the next phase in the Port Authority story.

Post Authority 2: The Director’s Cut is a project five years in the making. Due to scheduling issues from working on other projects, Polo was not able to complete the album until this year. While the country has undergone two presidential elections and LeBron James picked up back-to-back NBA championships since the first installment hit stores, in Polo’s eyes the quality of the work is paramount to the amount of time committed to completing it.

“I was really trying to make the best album,” says Polo. “The first one was really well received which is a blessing, so I wanted to make sure that if I ever did a follow-up that it was better. There’s no point putting out music if you’re not progressing.”

Many of Polo’s long time musical collaborators make appearances on the LP. Fellow Canadian Hip Hop representative Kardinal Offishal joins with M.O.P.’s Lil Fame and The Lox’s Styles P for “What They Say.” Large Professor, Inspectah Deck, O.C., and Tragedy Khadafi spit bars over “Astonishing.”  On “G.U.R.U.,” Talib and Polo’s biggest artistic influence, DJ Premier, pay homage to the late Gang Starr member.

Even with various voices contributing to many of the tracks there is still a synergy that is evident on each record. This is largely because Polo meticulously selects which emcees to combine together and also because the 10 year vet has not conceded to the practice of just e-mailing beats to artists. He prefers to be in the space with them as they construct their verses.

“A lot of stuff these days is done through the internet and no one really communicates, vibes, or gets in the lab. All that type of s**t makes a real big difference when you’re creating music,” says Polo. “Instead of just having three really popular rappers on a beat for no reason that on paper looks really cool but doesn’t really resonate and last over time, I’m really trying to make songs that you can listen to in 10, 20 years and still be good.”

Polo also broke with the modern norm of limited albums to 12 songs or fewer. PA2 is a 19-track opus that also includes skits showcasing Polo’s “Canadianism” by borrowing vocal samples from the famous Canuck comedy duo of Bob and Doug MacKenzie. The skits, songs, and interlude together total over an hour. The 80 minute running time for Port Authority 2 is an extension of theme established by the album’s subtitle – The Director’s Cut.

marcopolopa2

“I called it The Director’s Cut because it’s the long version,” explains Polo. “When you go cop a DVD in the store you can get the regular or you can get the director’s cut which is the unedited full version.”

Besides drawing inspiration from filmmaking for the album’s name, Polo also drafted an established star from Hollywood to serve as the narrator for the project. Hip Hop head Michael Rapaport, of Higher Learning fame, opens the album. The director of the A Tribe Called Quest documentary Beats, Rhymes & Life and the Brooklyn-based rap producer first met through Masta Ace and then connected again on social media.

“He started following me on Twitter, and I shot him a message like, ‘Yo, you wanna do some vocal skits for my album?’ He hit me back right away like, ‘Yep. Whatever you need me to do I’ll do it’,” reveals Polo. “It was a surprise and a blessing. He came through the studio and did a bunch of vocal clips and the intro. It really helped tie the whole theme of the director’s cut together.”

Making the decision to go with a sequel to Port Authority and having half a decade to complete it, Polo knows his latest work is going to be judged at a high level. He welcomes the challenge and believes PA2 will satisfy those listeners looking for a complete, authentic Hip Hop project upgraded for 2013.

“It’s definitely going to be appreciated by people who like to pop something in and listen top to bottom,” says Polo. “It’s meant for people that appreciate the art of making an album.”

Port Authority 2: The Director’s Cut is available on iTunes.

RelationshipMan: Ghostface Killah Set To Receive “Couple’s Therapy” on VH1

(AllHipHop News) Who said thugs don’t need help too? As of January 2014, Ghostface Killah (birthname Dennis Coles) and his significant other Kelsey Nykole will appear on VH1’s fourth season of “Couples Therapy”.

The show will be moderated by host Dr. Jenn Berman and according to the press release, the couples in the show will go through multiple activities to test their relationship and even “real world” exercises:

The couples will participate in group and individual therapy along with relationship exercises out in the ‘real world’ to see if they can rekindle the love they used to have for one another—or if it’s simply time for them to move on.

Quite ironic that Ghostface would appear on a show about fixing one’s relationship given the wealth of knowledge on relationships he has bestowed on the world over the years. For example, Pretty Tony sent relationship advice to his Twitter followers on Valentines Day two years ago suggesting candlelight dinners, pajama set purchases and more:

Ghost will be accompanied on the show by John & Kate Plus 8 dad Jon Gosselin and his girlfriend Liz Jannetta as well as The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Taylor Armstrong and her fiancee John Bluher.

VH1’s “Couple’s Therapy” is set to premiere  January, 2014 with 8, one-hour episodes.
