Mixtape Review: Big K.R.I.T’s “4Eva N A Day”

Rating: 9 / 10

Since the release of his mixtape “Krit Was Here”, Big K.R.I.T.’s been one of the premier underground artists to watch. His unique Southern drawl accents a plethora of his talents; his bass-heavy, melodic instrumentals, catchy hooks, and relatable lyrics drive his music in almost every aspect, but even all of that understates the impact he’s had and the loyal following he’s amassed.

From ESPN anchors like Michael Smith and Bomani Jones to Hip-Hop heads and rap connoisseurs alike, K.R.I.T’s music has grown legs to say the very least, and the quality of his music is undeniable. It is with that realization that Krit releases “4Eva N A Day”, the last mixtape to usher us into his debut LP “Live From The Underground”, and although it’s not as impactful as his last two (due to timing, not quality), it’s still by far one of the best projects to drop this year.

In comparison to his previous entries, 4Eva is more of a concept project than a traditional mixtape. The album begins with him waking up, and throughout the songs K.R.I.T. essentially walks us through a “day” of his life. From his reflective mood in the early mornings concerning his passed loved ones in “Yesterday”, to his resolve to achieve greatness in “Boobie Miles”, to riding in his car (“Me & My Old School”, “1986”), to his late night habits explored on the last half of the project, when played as a whole he completes the concept solidly.

Of course, there’s more details to it than that, as K.R.I.T. manages to somehow make all of it sound as authentic as his last few projects, even dropping in personal heartfelt rhymes (most notably in songs like “Red Eye” and “Handwriting”, which deals with his relationship issues concerning his girl and his label, respectively).

The production here is still stellar, and K.R.I.T. continues to diversify his sound, evolving from the generic trunk-rattlers from his early “See Me On Top” mixtape days into making beats that are just as well conceived as his lyrics. The only true flaw here is the thing that makes 4Eva stand out; K.R.I.T. chooses to go this one solo, but he holds his own and it didn’t seem to be a need for a guest appearance to mess up the concept. Although some may think tracks like “1986” are bland, K.R.I.T. more than makes up for that alleged “misstep” as he powers out yet another remarkable mixtape/album that shows just how consistent he is.

K.R.I.T. doesn’t have anything else to prove in the underground circuit after the release of “4Eva N A Day“. All that’s left now is for Mr. Justin Scott to drop the album, right?

Snoop Dogg Invests in LAFL Women’s Football Team

(AllHipHop News) The start of its inaugural season is less than two months away and the newly-formed Lady Arena Football League (LAFL) already has a celebrity supporter in rapper Snoop Dogg.

WENN reports that the West Coast rap veteran has become a part owner of the Los Angeles Rideretts by buying shares in the team. Tryouts for the Rideretts were held last Saturday (March 10) in Carson, California.

The LAFL is an 8-on-8 full contact football league that incorporates female athletes who will play in lingerie-style uniforms. According to the leagues’ website, players will compete under the same bylaws and rules of the National Arena Football League.

In addition to the Rideretts, LAFL teams include the Lady Houston Panthers, New Orleans Lady Dollz, Kansas City Tease, and St. Louis Sting. More teams are “coming soon” from Oakland, Atlanta, and Las Vegas, the website states.

Snoop Dogg’s part owner status with the Rideretts marks his latest venture into the world of sports. The entertainer’s Snoop Youth Football League has become a nationwide success with its focus on providing inner-city kids with a chance to participate in youth football, while promoting the importance of academics and the value of teamwork, good sportsmanship, discipline, and self-respect. The youth league, founded by Snoop Dogg, holds its “Snooper Bowl” championship every year on the eve of the Super Bowl.

The inaugural season of the Lady Arena Football League is set to begin in May.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Rick Ross Wants to Renegotiate His Deal With Def Jam?

Rick Ross was on New York City’s HOT 97 last night along with his MMG conglomerates Meek Mill, Wale, and Stalley to clear up a few rumors floating around. There has been recent rumbling of Rozay wanting to leave Def Jam for Cash Money. Although Rozay said everything was “one-hundred” with Def Jam, he left himself some wiggle room by adding that Def Jam needs to take another look at his deal….aka we need to renegotiate……aka they need to give me more money! Def Jam had better be ready to write a huge check.

Ross also discussed the recent departure of ex-MMG artist Pill. Apparently, Pill was never really a part of MMG to begin with, and Warner Music Group was actually the ones who brought Pill into the mix.

“When I sat down to do my deal, they had Pill as an artist already there,” explains Ross.  “They just thought he may have needed a little work or whatever and we could’ve got that in with the team. So we worked out a one year situation.”

It looks like Pill’s year was up, and Ross wasn’t impressed with his progress so he sent him packing.

The Beastie Boys Mike D Curating Art Show

(AllHipHop News) The Beastie Boys’ Mike D also known as Michael Diamond will be curating a high end art show in Los Angeles set to debut April 19th – May 10th.

Dubbed the “Transmission L.A.: AV Club,” the art show will take place at L.A. MOCA and will feature artist’s work that Mike D sought out while visiting galleries on the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

The event is sponsored by Mercedes Benz, and will feature the work of Swedish artist Klara Liden, the Brooklyn art collective Still House and several others, while also debuting the new Mercedes Concept Style Coup.

“I want a place where people can come and hang out. Not some button-up white walls gallery with people to match,” said Mike D told the Wall Street Journal

Jeffrey Deitch, director of L.A. MOCA since 2010, has chosen an icon from the pop-music world to organize the upcoming art and music infused festival.

“Mike D found out about our work somehow through someone,” Still House’s Isaac Brest told Art in America. “He looked at our website and saw that we had done a residency in Tribeca in which we took over an abandoned Department of Transportation office. We created work there, inspired by the space, then opened it up as an exhibition.”

“We’re setting up a studio and making work in it. We’re basically transplanting the program we have in Red Hook, of a rotating residency, to L.A.,” Brest said of the groups plans for the L.A. exhibition.

Mike D and the other members of the Beastie Boys will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April this year.
