Mixtape Review: Emilio Rojas’ “Breaking Point”

Rating: 6.5/10

Back in 2010, Emilio Rojas had a buzz similar to the one he currently has, but it inexplicably took a nose dive and the Latin spitter was sent back to the drawing board. Now, among MMG rumors and his usual co-sign from DJ Green Lantern, Emilio once again seems poised to make a breakthrough to listeners everywhere with his latest mixtape, Breaking Point.

Emilio is at his best when he is at his most vulnerable. Honesty is something Hip-Hop fans adore, and Emilio showcases it well. The album opener, “Breaking Point” utilizes the ‘me-against-the-world’ style synths for Emilio to vent (“My Daddy learned she was pregnant and he so angry/ He tried to end it, I’m no stranger to coat hangers”), but he gets more personal on tracks like “S###” and “Take A Good Look Around”. The first explores the hardships and racism suffered by Latin-Americans, and the second goes into detail about his lesbian sister. Emilio speaks about his trials and tribulations with an aggression that’s infectious, and every now and then that carries on to more shallow tracks as well. “Middle Finger” has corky synthesizer work and a Jay-Z sample (“Middle finger to the law”), and no matter how crude “P#### and Cologne” is, it proves to be mildly catchy.

The other half of the album is unorganized and forced, though. It feels that Emilio Rojas has yet to find his lane in the rap game. “Blame Me” has Drake written all over it- from the soft hook, the vocals, the production, to the flow. “I Thought You Knew” sounds like a throwaway Rick Ross track, and tracks like “Classic” and “Realization” are both underwhelming. Very few moments on the project stand out. A song like “Pimpin” will be to your liking one play, but the next will lose your interest very quickly. This is something that plagues the entire mixtape.

Ultimately, the highlights on Breaking Point are not all that spectacular, and the rest of it is very bland. It’s hard to pinpoint exactly where Emilio goes wrong here. It’s obvious he has talent as a rapper, but some of his production choice is questionable, his hooks are sometimes corny, and his identity as an artist has yet to be established. There are lots of negatives in this review but after the first listen, you’ll think to yourself, ‘It wasn’t that bad’- and it’s not. However, Breaking Point has very little replay value. It’s not something you’ll remember in November.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Chris Brown and Rihanna “Hook Up” at GRAMMY Rehearsals?

We hear Chris Brown and Rihanna have been spending some quality time together as of late.   RumorFix.com is reporting that the two spent five hours holed up in Rihanna’s dressing room during rehearsals for the 2012 Grammy Awards on the Sony lot in Los Angeles. What the two were doing for five hours is still unknown, but source say Chris’ girlfriend Karrueche Tran was nowhere in site – although Chris was accompanied by one of his male friends.

Funny enough, Karrueche tweeted this tweet out last night:

Sorry, Karrueche, with Rihanna back in the picture, I don’t think you will be able to have it all.

Do you think Rihanna and Chris Brown getting back together would be a mistake? These two have a tumultuous history, but that was three years ago, and they both seemed to have grown up a lot since then. If they do, they would definitely be the new Whitney and Bobby. I just hope they don’t end up like them!

T-Pain Launches New Foundation; Plans All-Star Concert At Florida State

(AllHipHop News) Rapper/singer/producer T-Pain has announced a new foundation in his hometown of Tallahassee, Florida.

T-Pain has launched the “If I Could Change the World” foundation, which will host a benefit concert in partnership with Florida State University’s Headliner Artists Series.

Artists like Chris Brown, DJ Khaled, Ace Hood, Young Cash and others will perform during the “Come To The Crib 2” benefit concert.

The concert is the second installment of a benefit series that T-Pain launched in 2007.

“I can’t wait to hit the stage for ‘Come to the Crib 2,’” said T-Pain. “Our fans and their support made it possible for us to build a new entertainment room for the kids at the Walker Ford Center and I hope this year will be even bigger.”

T-Pain’s “If I Could Change the World” foundation has partnered with Change Worlds, a non-profit which asks users to submit videos, and then selects an initiative to back, to make a difference.

“Hopefully my foundation inspires today’s youth to get involved with our communities, which is why I wanted to give my fans the control to choose this year’s charity. So go to www.changeworlds.org to help us select this year’s initiative.”

The “Come to the Crib 2″ benefit concert takes place at the Tallahassee Leon County Civic Center on March 31.

Tickets go on sale February 10, 2012.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Is Kanye West Filming a Reality Show?

We hear that Kanye West may be putting together a reality show based on the launch of his new fashion label, KW.  Yeezy is currently working on the new women’s clothing line and has a camera crew following him around to document his new fashion creations.

I think a reality show based on Kanye West’s new fashion endeavors would be pretty interesting.  The man is a musical genius and hopefully that will translate into fashion for him.  And we all know Kanye knows a thing or two about women’s clothing!  I wonder what happened to his Pastel clothing line though?

Hip-Hop Rumors: Kanye West’s Absurd Rider Requests!

We all know Kanye West can be a diva, but some of the items on his rider are way over the top! If you want to book Yeezy for a show, be prepared to have $378 Versace towels shipped in.  On top of that, you will need to hire a tailor so that they can cut the towels into customized squares.  Yeezy needs these so that he can wipe off his sweat while he’s on stage in style!

Also, Kanye demands no man-made fibers be worn by the minions who are serving him. So make sure that driver who you hire to pick Kanye up from the airport, is not wearing polyester or Yeezy may not get into the car. Mr.West prefers his servants be dressed in “100 percent cotton” only.

I guess when you’re Kanye West, you can demand these types of things.  At least he’s not asking for an all white room like J.Lo, or the removal of all the brown M&M’s like Van Halen famously requested.  Do you think Yeezy’s demands are over the top?
