AHH Stray News: Ice-T Talks To Kids; Romeo Off USC B-Ball Team; Dr. Dre Tribute

“Gangsta” rap pioneer Ice-T will speak to dozens of foster youth on May 29th at the Texas Foster Youth Conference, taking place at the Marriott Rivercenter in San Antonio, Texas. Ice-T will speak to the kids about his life experiences on the streets of South Central, Los Angeles, how he dealt with various trials & tribulations in the music industry and the work it took to become one of Hip-Hop’s most successful crossover actors. Ice-T was left an orphan at an early age, when both of his parents died of heart attacks. “He was an orphan early on and he knows the issues our foster youth face,” Nancy Bonilla told the San Antonio-Express News. “Because of his celebrity status, he brings recognition to the issues, and a big part of the conference is to bring awareness to the issues.”Rapper/actor Romeo has quit the USC basketball team, after a disappointing season due to a should injury. During the two seasons he played with The Trojans, Romeo played point guard in a total of nine games, earning a total of five points. Romeo, who starred in the hit series “Romeo!” on Nick, originally graduated from Beverley Hills High School, where he started all four seasons. Rappers Spice One, Felicia “Snoop” Pearson, Bronx Style Bob, producer Domino and others have teamed to pay tribute to Dr. Dre on a new album. The release, titled The Chronic 2011: A Millennium Tribute to the Songs of Dr. Dre, features a variety of rappers remaking songs from Dr. Dre’s entire production catalog. Spice 1 remakes “We Want Eazy,” while Felicia “Snoop” Pearson remakes Snoop Dogg’s “Gin & Juice.” The album is slated to be released this fall on CD and vinyl. Additionally, two slots are being left open for a new rapper or Hip-Hop group to remake a track to be included on the album. MySpace.com links can be emailed to Dr**********@***oo.com.

Man Acquitted Of Murdering Rapper Dolla

(AllHipHop News) The man accused of shooting and killing rising rapper Dolla was acquitted of murder charges yesterday (May 22) in a Los Angeles courtroom. A jury acquitted Aubrey Berry, 24, of the charges after less than two days of deliberating and nine days of testimony, which saw Berry take the stand in his own defense. Berry claimed that he was involved in an altercation with Dolla in a club in Atlanta a week prior to the shooting, which took place last May, near a valet section at the Beverly Center. He testified that he researched the rapper online and read his violent lyrics. He also found clips of Dolla and other gang members bragging about assaulting another man. Berry, who had a permit to carry his gun in other states,  testified he traveled to Los Angeles often and was always armed, although he didn’t realize his permit was not valid in California. Berry said Dolla threatened to kill him during the chance encounter at the Beverly Center. Dolla, 21, was an artist signed to Akon’s Konvict Muzik. He was shot three times in the back, as he attempted to flee Berry’s gunfire. “Obviously, what happened on May 18, 2009, was a horrible tragedy for everyone,” Superior Court Judge Michael E. Pastor told the lawyers in court. “The jurors have spoken.”Jurors may have been influenced by Dolla’s own rap lyrics, said Deputy District Attorney Bobby Grace. “You’d hate to think that was the tipping point,” Grace told The Los Angeles Times out front of court. Dolla’s mother was taken from the courtroom due to her emotional reaction to the verdict.

Suge ‘100 Percent’ Innocent Says Lawyer

(AllHipHop News) Marion “Suge” Knight’s lawyer has denied reports that the 45-year-old mogul pointed a gun at a man during an argument Wednesday (May 19th) in Los Angeles. Knight was arrested in Gardena by a group of LAPD officers from the Homicide & Robbery Division just after 12:00 AM Thursday morning. The former head of Death Row Records allegedly pointed a gun at him in Los Angeles during the altercation. Knight was on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and driving with a suspended license. He was released after posting $60,000 in bail. “He’s innocent, 100 percent,” Marc Brumer told CNN. “Suge Knight is a businessman. He is not a person who would carry a gun or flash a gun at anybody. That’s not Suge Knight.”Brumer noted that police never found the alleged weapon when they arrested Knight, who cooperated with authorities. “There are a lot of people that hate (Knight) and are jealous of what he has obtained in his life,” Brumer said of a motive for the latest accusations levied at Knight. According to Brumer, Knight is looking to return to the music industry as the head of his own record label. “He’s working with new artists, starting a record label, looking into sports management companies,” Brumer said. “He’s really an icon in the music industry, and really looked up to in the African-American community. “He’s a bright man. He wouldn’t carry a gun on him. That’s not him.”

Republicans Buy Sneakers, Too

A

popular sentiment shared among members of the sports community is that politics

and sports should not mix.  After

all, with the vast investment of Corporate America, astronomical ticket pricing

and multi-billion dollar television contracts, it is simply safer and

financially more lucrative to accept the status quo than to challenge it.

The

Phoenix Suns recently rejected this logic during their 2nd round

playoff series versus the San Antonio Spurs.  Before Game 2 of the Western

Conference Semi-Finals versus their post-season nemesis, the Suns took

advantage of their media spotlight to show support for the Latino

community.  Owner Robert Sarver approached his players about wearing their

“Los Suns” jerseys for two reasons: 1) in honor of Cinco de Mayo and 2) as a

sign of disapproval for the newly passed Immigration Law.  In a show of

solidarity, Sarver received the overwhelming support of his players and

coaches, as well as by the Spurs (who wanted to wear “Los Spurs” jerseys, but

could not get them ready in time for the game).

Known

as Senate Bill 1070, this law is “intended” to target illegal immigrants by

giving the police the authority to question and arrest any individual they

suspect to be in the country illegally.  In reality however, critics argue

that this bill is unconstitutional, as it simply allows and encourages racial

profiling by targeting the state’s large Hispanic community.

Historically

speaking, this is not the first time that the Arizona Legislature has

demonstrated racial narrow-mindedness.  In

1987, then Arizona Governor Evan Mecham rescinded a bill to recognize Martin

Luther King Jr. Day.  The bill was once again snubbed

when voters revisited the matter in 1990.  Met with intense scrutiny across the nation, the NFL

and its Players Association decided to move the venue of Super Bowl XXVII from

Tempe, Arizona to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.

Similar

opposition has been pouring out with the enactment of SB 1070.  President Obama has been quite

critical of the bill, while Hispanic members of Congress and neighbouring

states Texas, New Mexico and California — all with large Latino populations —

have questioned its legitimacy. The Los Angeles City Council has even gone as

far as to vote a boycott of doing business with the state of Arizona (Editor’s

note: where does this leave the Los Angeles Lakers who play the Suns in the

Western Conference Finals?)

The

NBA has indeed become more diverse over the past two decades and by endorsing

the Suns’ “Los Suns” jerseys, the NBA and their Player’s Association took

a significant and much needed social stance. In a recent interview on ESPN, the

captain and star of the team, Steve Nash, spoke out against the bill: “I’m against it.  I think that this is a bill that really

damages our civil liberties.  I

think that it opens up the potential for racial profiling, (and) racism.  I think that it’s a bad precedence to

set for our young people.  It

represents our state poorly in the eyes of the rest of our nation and the

world.  I think that we have a lot

of great attributes here and I think that it’s something that we can do

without; and hopefully we can change a lot in the coming weeks”.

It

is easy to see where Nash differs from many of his peers in the spotlight.

Rather than side stepping the issue, Nash took advantage of his elevated status

to address the issue; with a bit more diplomacy than Kanye declaring after Hurricane Katrina that

“George Bush doesn’t care about black people” but with just as much of the

social weight.  Not to over-hype

the importance of the NBA’s influence over America’s youth, but just think back

on what hip-hop did for Obama’s 2008 Presidential Campaign — it sparked

unprecedented interest and voter turnout amongst the youth of America.

Similarly, the NBA could very well end up being responsible for a

socially-charged youth response by taking a public stance on SB 1070.

At

the same time, let us not forget that during periods of extreme unrest and

conflict in the civil arena, sports was used as a great means to spark

conversation and social change.  In the past three decades, athletes have

bartered social responsibility for corporate functionality.  Rightly or wrongly, the game’s top

performers have agreed to take the highroad as it pertains to social and

political ills, in exchange for corporate immunity.  We need not look further than to the greatest

basketball player of all time, Michael Jordan.  The

way in which Jordan transcended the game of basketball was evident both on and

off the court.  Growing up, pretty much every kid

who stepped onto the court wanted to “Be Like Mike”.  While Jordan’s heart and

determination on the court was never questioned, his silence off it has been.  His allegiance to Corporate America

(i.e. Nike, Gatorade, McDonald’s, etc) has continually outweighed just about

everything else, as evidenced during the 1990 Senate race in his home state of

North Carolina, where Jordan refused to endorse Democratic nominee Harvey Gantt

over the ultra-conservative racial bigot Jesse Helms, famously stating that

“Republicans buy sneakers, too.”

For

better or for worse, we have come a long way since the days of Jackie Robinson,

Muhammad Ali, Jim Brown and other social activists, all in the name of fame and

celebrity.

Perhaps

it is unfair to expect our athletes to be publicly invested in the social and political wrongs of our

culture.  Some would argue that it

does not matter what stance Michael Jordan takes on the War in Iraq or the

Health Care Debate.  After all as a

performer, he was paid to do two things: win and entertain –- both of which he

did better than anyone else.

However,

it is irresponsible and naive to

suggest that politics and sports (or entertainment for that matter) do not

mix.  Senate Bill 1070 is an example of that.  This is not a

Democrat versus Republican issue; it is a right versus wrong issue.  And

in any arena, civil or sport, racial profiling and discrimination must be addressed.

Damian talks about Nas and Mother Africa.

Nas talks about the rap game and why things are all messed up!

IT WASN’T CRIPS THAT GOT AT WAKA!

Remember that “Crip” that was mad-doggin Gucci and Waka at the video set? It wasn’t a Crip at all. It was Queail, Slick Pulla’s cousin. This dude is down with the “Da Congressman.” He’s got a real bone to pick with Waka….not really Gucci. Here are some of the quotes:

“Not down with no Crip, Not down with no Blood, not affiliated with none of them, but I can say I f**k with everybody,” Queail told AllHipHop.com.

“This has nothing to Jeezy, Gucci Mane or none of that s**t. Gucci and Jeezy don’t know nothing about that s**t, don’t wanna know nothing about that s**t,” Queail told AllHipHop.com. “Gucci and Jeezy did they own thang, more power to them. This isn’t about Waka Flocka or none of that. First of all I smashed Waka Flocka for a reason, ya feel me, and that reason was in the streets.”

Did I mention, he may or MAY NOT be the person that punched Waka in the eye? I think Mama Waka Deb needs to step in. She’s a G.

Q says that Waka is a “Duck.”

AMBER ROSE IS SMOKIN’

And I don’t mean cancer sticks. Anyway, she and Kanye are still together, per Tila Tequila. Now, speaking of this one…Amber Rose now doesn’t like Tila since she told everybody about those two “making out.” Not sure why Tila would do that, but Amber rejected Tila recently when she asked to attend a show with A.R.

Click here for some banging pics of Amber. No Kanye.

DIDDY EXPLAINS LIL WAYNE VISIT

I know Shyne fans are going to freaking out, but…here it is!

“Wayne is a trooper. Wayne is doing great. It was a personal visit, so I don’t want to get into the details of that. We’re just counting down the days of him getting out. He’s somebody that has been there for me over the years numerous times. I live in New York. It wouldn’t have been right if I didn’t go see him and check on his health and well-being. But the status of where that’s at, that’s his personal business. I think we gonna miss a certain energy that Wayne has.”

DJ KHALED AND RICK ROSS TALK TO DJ ENVY

ILLSEED’S QUICKIES

Kendra Wilkinson’s sex tape is big-time on the way. I saw some screen shots and its steamy. I can’t put in on AHH.

What do you all think about Jay Elect’s comments about Eminem? I was looking at it like he was playing a role, but maybe he was expressing his feelings.

Lebron James is reportedly house-hunting in Chicago. That fiasco with his mom may have a huge impact!

WTF? Bristol Palin, Sarah’s daughter, gets $15k to speak to youth about abstinence? She needs to speak on pimpin people of our their paper.

Frank Lucas’ Wife Busted For Selling 2 Kilos Of Coke

(AllHipHop News) The wife of former drug dealer Frank Lucas was arrested Wednesday (May 19th) in San Juan, Puerto Rico, after she allegedly sold 2 kilograms of cocaine to an informant at a hotel. Julianna Farrait, 70, was being recorded on May 11th, when she told the informant that she had two kilos of cocaine for sale and that another contact had an additional eight kilos to be unloaded. Farrait set up a second meeting in the Isla Verde and attempted to sell the two kilos to the informant. After the transaction, DEA agents raided the hotel room and took the woman into custody. Agents had been tracking Farrait since February of 2009, according to reports. Farrait is married to Frank Lucas, the heroin dealer whose life was portrayed by Oscar-Award winning actor, Denzel Washington in the 2007 flick American Gangster. Ironically, Farrait was played by Puerto Rican actress Lymari NadalFarrait served 5 years in prison after being arrested in 1975, for her role in Lucas’ heroin operation.Lucas was sentenced to 40 years in prison, but was released 1991.

Wale Labeled ‘Homophobic’ For Canceling Show At Gay Event

(AllHipHop News) Washington, D.C. rapper Wale is being criticized by the organizers of the DC Black Pride festival for canceling his headlining performance at the LGBT event. Wale was supposed to be the headlining performer on Sunday, May 30th during the gay-friendly event, which takes place at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in downtown D.C. DC Black Pride board member Earl Fowlkes claimed Wale was homophobic and cancelled his appearance at the event. ”Basically we had an agreement, and we were very clear to the different parties and agents involved that this was an LGBT event,” Fowlkes told the D.C. Metro Weekly. ”What happened is that when the first blast went out that Wale was going to be at Black Pride he got cold feet, and his agent first said Wale wasn’t available because he had to do family stuff. Then we got another e-mail saying he didn’t know what kind of event this was when he agreed to it.”A representative for Wale blamed the cancellation on the rapper’s extensive touring schedule and his desire to spend time with his family, in addition to recording a new album. ”All of the facts of the event were not disclosed with the offer and therefore, he feels mislead and regretfully declines,” his representative, Jesse Kirshbaum added.

The 2 Live Crew Link With Mannie Fresh For New Album

(AllHipHop News) Pioneering, Miami, Florida rap group 2 Live Crew are working on an album of all new material being produced by Mannie Fresh and former Slip-N-Slide producer Funk Boogie. The new album is titled Just Wanna Be Heard and will be released on Nu Focuz Entertainment/Lil Joe Records, this August. In addition to original group members Brother Marquis, Fresh Kid Ice and DJ Mr. Mixx, the album will also features guest appearances by Too $hort, E-40 and The Insane Clown Posse. “We’ve been away for so long. The album states where Marquis and I are coming from,” Fresh Kid Ice told AllHipHop.com. “We want to be back on the scene and with a lot of things going on. Music is like the same right now when you listen to a lot of different groups and so forth. So it’s our time again to be heard and we wanna be heard. So with two platinum producers and we all basically vibed on how to take 2 Live Crew to the next level instead of sounding like we did in the 80’s and 90’s.”The first single from the album is titled “Cougar” and is being released as the group prepares to be honored by VH1 in a high-profile appearance during the 2010 Hip Hop Honor’s show.  “It’s a lot of older women with the younger men type of thing and it’s a good thing,” Fresh Kid Ice noted. “Cause you gotta learn somewhere so hopefully every young man can experience a cougar and hope she don’t bite too hard.”Along with original group member Luther “Uncle Luke” Campbell, the 2 Live Crew blazed a trail in Hip-Hop history with their raunchy, humorous lyrics and parodies of popular hit songs. The group fought a well documented battle with the state of Florida and the United States in general over songs like “Throw that D**k,” “We Want Some P***y” and “Me So Horny.”The case involving their parody of Roy Orbison’s song “Pretty Woman” went all the way to the Supreme Court, which the group won unanimously. The 2 Live Crew are also claiming credit for introducing the concept of the Hip-Hop video vixen, as most of their early videos were known for featuring a variety of scantily clad women. “We mixed the comedy with profanity and definitely brought the half-naked girls to the video screen. We opened up the whole freedom of speech channel in Hip-Hop and nobody can ever deny that,” Brother Marquis said. The 2 Live Crew is also responsible for video models becoming main stays in music video’s and all of today’s video vixens have the 2 Live Crew to thank for the job opportunity.”The 2 Live Crew will hit the road this summer, where they will reunite with Luke Campbell on select dates in key cities. Brother Marquis will also do some standup, showing off his second career as a comic. “2 Live Crew was a great experience. I love these guys! Fresh Kid Ice,  and Luke….I love those dudes and when we get back on the reunion tour, we’re gonna make a lot of stuff happen.”
