TOP 5 DEAD OR ALIVE: Corey Gunz

Yeah we’re back once again with your favorite rapper’s favorite column TOP 5 DEAD OR ALIVE. We know some of you were outraged last week with your boy Max B’s picks, but everybody sees the game different. Regardless we still make the world go around.

Up this week we got Corey Gunz. Admit it; he murdered Lil Wayne on his own ish. If you’re still in denial go back to that “A Millie” one more time to see the light. Since then the kid has gained notoriety for ripping down other people’s beats like he bought them. Always spitting something crazy, Corey’s choices shouldn’t come as a surprise.

Jay-Z

Corey Gunz: On the real it’s tough for me to narrow it down to five people because so many dudes have influenced me so I don’t want to offend anyone. Let me get that out. But I have to go with Jay-Z first and foremost. Being the lyricist he is, the trends he sets in Hip-Hop and how he approached the game. He made a movement. He’s dope. He’s monumental, he’s a lyricist too.

He’s one of the legends. I was raised in a real musical household and I grew up listening to a lot of different stuff. When I first heard Jay it was around Reasonable Doubt, I was around eight [years old] I think? I was attracted at the beats at that age. I was memorizing his sh*t at that age. For him to carry those criminal flows based on sh*t that has more than one meaning; that was unheard of.

Nas

Corey Gunz: I would have to say Esco because he paints pictures with his words. When he spit it you could really feel it. At the same time he is so witty and humble, it goes over your head. Jay is more disrespectful with his approach where Nas is like “I’m your brother but stay in your lane.” Like yo he gave us “I Gave You Power”, and “New York State Of Mind”; I could go on [laughs].

[In response to Nas having one foot in the grave when “Takeover” dropped.]

I mean who didn’t think that? I knew Nas was going to come back because I knew his capabilities. But I don’t think anybody in their wildest dreams knew what kind of impact he was going to have when he made “Ether”. For him to come back the way he did after “Take Over” and then he came with a classic right after [Stillmatic].

Eminem

Corey Gunz: I’m a Hip-Hop fan at heart. I’m into lyrics. I don’t care if your name is MC Garbage Pail, if you spitting something crazy, I’m f***ing with you. At the end of the day, Eminem was spitting some bugged out sh*t but it was fire. I also relate to him as an artist, he’s come from a lot. He came up from the grind. I grew up in this game battling but with him it was so much differences with him.

First of all he’s white, him having to go to different hoods and get respect shows he came up from nothing. And bottom line his lyrical abilities, his concepts, his wittiness is crazy. Yo to be honest I know this is going to sound on some real Stan sh*t, which is really not the case. I can’t name one joint that is my favorite from Em’, he has so many joints where he went off.

Big Pun

Corey Gunz: How could I not mention Pun? Like I’m going to keep one hundred with everyone; if you can’t hear Big Pun in my flow then you’re a retard because I’ve grown up listening to that dude. In ’98 I was one of the only dudes on my block pumping his music period. I would be repeating the bars from “Twinz”. I would be repeating number seven off Capital Punishment [“The Dream Shatterer”]:

“Reverse that / I curse at / The first wack n**** with the worst rap / Cuz he ain’t worth jack / Hit ’em with a thousand pounds of pressure per slap / Make his whole body jerk back / Watch the earth crack / Hand his purse back / I’m the first Latin rapper to baffle your skull…”

[In regards to Pun’s passing]

It struck heart and home when Pun passed. My pops and Tariq took it real hard, so did The Bronx as a whole took it hard. He just came off making history, Pun was history walking. That sh*t hit people hard. Him and my dad did a lot of shows, so me going to their shows chilling and meeting him it hit me hard when he died.

 &

Lord Tariq / Jada Kiss

Corey Gunz: I’m not going to lie; my last choice is a tie. It got to be Lord Tariq and Jadakiss. Honestly Tariq has been a big influence to me period. Lyrically he’s ridiculous. He’s so underrated and one of the greatest to touch the microphone. People just haven’t listened to him and paid attention. The streets will say it; the legends will say it too. Tariq recorded with Biggie; dudes overlook that. They did a song together called “Think Big”. Even from when I was in elementary school, Tariq was always putting work in. So dudes don’t pay him respect.

But at the same time my cousin Jay put me onto to The Lox at a very young age. This is before Puff snatched them. Jada is one of the most spit in your face kind of disrespect there is. Honestly he is one of the most consistent sixteen bar spitters; that’s why he’s in my top five. You got to think about it, Jada has always been on point. I’ve never heard him spit something trash. Think about that. I keep my ear to the streets and he’s never spit anything wack.

The Sidebar:

Corey wants to clear up things up about a record recently blasted out that was supposed to be him featuring T-Pain. Mr. Autotune was no where to be found; as it was a reference for another artist that got leaked. So don’t think the son of Peter fakes the funk. In closing Corey felt in a terrible way when Shaq went on stage him asking Kobe how his ass tastes. Pause.

R&B Rewind: Jamie Foxx – “Infatuation”

Artist: Jamie FoxxSong: “Infatuation”?Year: 1994?Album: Peep This?Hey everybody! It’s Wednesday and it’s time for another R&B Rewind! Every week I am fortunate to get suggestions from many of you about which songs to cover next. I appreciate all of your ideas, so please keep them coming! But anyway, let’s get to this week’s pick. He got his start back in the ‘90s. Some of his accolades include a stint on In Living Color where he played the character Wanda, the television show The Jamie Foxx Show, and just three years ago he won an Oscar for his portrayal of Ray Charles. Well before the Oscar and the television show, and before landing on the hit song “Slow Jamz” with Kanye West and Twista, and releasing Unpredictable in 2005, Jamie Foxx dropped his first actual first CD Peep This back in 1994. I actually have this disc in my archives collecting dust with all my other CDs from the ‘90s, and I must admit every time I see it I smile because I wonder how many other people actually have the CD too. If you’ve followed Jamie Foxx’s singing career you probably remember the single “Infatuation” even though the album Peep This was more of an underground release. Man, this song takes me back! I remember I didn’t even know that Jamie Foxx could sing until I caught his stand up Straight from The Foxx Hole back in 1993. All I knew at the time was that Jamie Foxx was the guy from In Living Color who was funny as hell. But when I saw him sing during his stand up, I was taken by surprise. He wasn’t someone that harmonized well and could hold a note, but a singer that touched you within when he sang. He had that take you to First Corinthian Missionary Baptist Church sound, something a lot of us love and appreciate. Jamie Foxx has excelled to levels unimaginable today and I’m sure some of you probably didn’t know his singing career stretched this far back. And coming up this Sunday I am going to touch on a new single from him off his new album so make sure you check out “Sunday Selection” this week. I have a few things to say about Mr. Foxx and the current direction of his singing career and new album. Well y’all thanks for taking time out to read what I had to say.  Until next week y’all enjoy this week’s R&B Rewind – Jamie Foxx’s “Infatuation”Infatuation – Jamie Foxx

Jim Jones: A Byrd In The Hand

If you looked at Jim Jones ten years ago you would never have thought

he’d be where he is today. After a string of hits (you’ve said it loud, “Ballin’!,”

admit it) and savvy business moves, the former second in command of the

Diplomats movement has really come into his own.

Going from hype man, to entertainer, to businessman, Jones’ resume

reads like a “how to” story for would be entrepreneurs

and he’s still not done. After he gets his holiday money from the recently

released A Tribute to Bad Santa, Jim

Jones plans on hitting fans with his first major label album called Pray IV Reign.

With music, movies, and a stage play [Inside the Life & Mind of Jim Jones] all under his belt, Jim

Jones may have to officially change his name to Renaissance man.

AllHipHop.com: You’re

known for your rough image and street music so most people were shocked when

they heard you had a stage play. How did that come about?

Jim Jones: The

play was just an idea of mine. Did a new deal, trying to do something big. I’m

trying to get people to listen to the music. It’s just something innovative,

something new. I told my idea to the play director. He and I talked about the

ideas and my music and it turned into a musical.

Pop Champagne – Jim Jones & Ron Browz Feat. Juelz Santana

AllHipHop.com: Now

that you have it out what’s the next step?

Jim Jones: I’m

trying to get it on the road right now. We’re trying to figure that out right

now so hopefully it’ll go through.

AllHipHop.com:

You have a Christmas album coming out, which is a little rare to see in

Hip-Hop. What made you want to do it?

Jim Jones:

Christmas is my best season. I love Christmas music. I did Dipset Christmas so this is my double back. I built a good rapport with

Mike Epps. He’s real funny so I told him let’s do a Christmas album with him as

Bad Santa and he was with it. We locked in and did it. Juelz

gave me some songs. So did 730, Sin City gave me some songs and we got some Byrdgang songs.

Even got a couple R&B bangers in there and smashed that thing

together. It’s genuine Christmas music but it’s Christmas music we can relate

to.

AllHipHop.com: You

mentioned Mike Epps but I remember Katt Williams was

tapped to be the official comedy representative for Dipset

a while ago. What happened?

Jim Jones: Katt is still Diplomats. He’s Diplomats/Comedy Central. He

runs the comedy division and we’re trying to build a movie division. Katt is a business man and we’re all

doing business.

“We all cool. I haven’t spoken to Cam but as far as all the

other players, the ones who started it with me, we all cool. We’re still the

tight family we was. As for the artists, they’re

opinion really don’t matter anyway.”

AllHipHop.com:

In keeping with the Christmas theme, what do you remember most about

the holidays when you were growing up?

Jim Jones: What I

remember most about Christmas is the G.I. Joes and Voltron

toys. The Lumber Jack jackets, the sheepskins and the

v-bombers that we were so thirsty to get.

AllHipHop.com:

Christmas is a holiday about togetherness and unity. Do you think there’s a

chance we’ll ever see unity among Dipset?

Jim Jones: I

don’t know what it’ll take, but there’s definitely a chance. There’s always a

chance to make money.

Bad Santa Intro – Jim Jones ft. Sen & Shoota

AllHipHop.com: What’s

you relationship like with the other members?

Jim Jones: We all

cool. I haven’t spoken to Cam but as far as all the other players, the ones who

started it with me, we all cool. We’re still the tight family we was. As for the artists, they’re opinion really don’t matter

anyway.

SPLASH – JIM JONES & BYRDGANG

AllHipHop.com: In

another interview recently published on the Internet, you were quoted as saying

something to the effect of Cam’s ego being part of the break up?

Jim Jones: I

don’t think I said Cam’s ego but I will say it was both of our egos. Once

people’s egos get bigger than the money [then] these types of things tend to

happen.

AllHipHop.com: Can

you pinpoint where the disconnect between you two

happened and if so, is there anything you would’ve done different?

Jim Jones: I

couldn’t tell you man. I really can’t say.

AllHipHop.com: You

have a 50/50 deal with Columbia. You’ve done pretty well with yourself as an

indie artist so what can fans expect from you now that you’re on a major?

Jim Jones: A lot

more of me. A whole lot more of me. I’m sticking to the script. Nothing’s

changed. I’m still Jones. Except now I’m going to be all in your house, all in

your momma’s house. I’m definitely going to be a household name.

AllHipHop.com:

Artists have a tendency to lose a bit of themselves when they make the move to

the majors. Can we expect to see a difference in Jim Jones anytime soon?

Jim Jones: I

still do my music for the people I know. I do my music for the hood. I do my

music for the struggles and everything that came from the struggles, whether it

was success or not. I can never forget that. I put my experience in my music.

My music brings the people from the suburbs to the cities, to the hoods, to the

ghettos.

AllHipHop.com: You

have a longstanding relationship with Dr. Benjamin Chavis

of the Hip Hop Summit Action Network. With you becoming more of a household

name can we expect you to be even more active on social issues?

Jim Jones: I give

back as much as I can. People ask me to do things and I try to reach out. If

it’s for the kids I’m always there for that. I’m not the biggest social

activist but I give back when I can. Like I’m on the board for Entertainers 4

Education.

AllHipHop.com: Your

first single was originally a song by Ron Browz. How

did you two link up and will you collaborate on anymore

projects?

Jim Jones: Ron

did like three or four songs on my album, Pray IV Reign. I heard the Pop

Champagne record and I told him I’d give him some help and put a verse on

there. It turned into something way crazier than we would’ve thought.

AllHipHop.com: Who

else contributed to the project?

Jim Jones: C####

Santana, Byrdgang, Ludacris,

Busta, Ryan Leslie.

This Is Jim Jones – Jim Jones

AllHipHop.com:

Speaking of collaborations, you and Dame Dash have been spotted a lot together.

How involved is he in your projects?

Jim Jones: That’s

my business partner. We got a bunch of ventures. We’re going in on these

suckers.

AllHipHop.com: So

you’re officially bringing Dame Dash back to the music business?

Jones: Sky’s

the limit. Y’all n****s better be ready. We coming. We

better be on you n****s radar. The bleeps is louder than a motherf**ker right now.

AllHipHop.com: And

this is not a slight at Jay-Z in any way?

Jim Jones: Nah.

Why would it be? I don’t give a f**k about that n***a.

I don’t think about that n***a during the course of my

day. The only time I think about that n***a is when

the media mention him then it becomes a joke to me. I don’t give a f**k about that n***a.

AllHipHop.com: What’s

going on with your group, Byrdgang?

Jim Jones: We

just did a movie called Bird Flies High.

It’s kind of like a Pulp Fiction

meets Blair Witch Project type of

thing in the hood.

AllHipHop.com: I’m

curious to see how that combination played out. It sounds like something that

would difficult to make happen?

Jim Jones: You’ll

see. Hopefully it’ll be out in a couple of months.

AllHipHop.com: You

and Juelz Santana are the only ones that are still

visible and representing the Dips the same way Wayne and Baby rep for Cash

Money. Is there a chance you two will do an album similar to the one they did

together?

Jim Jones: We’re

doing an album together. We’re probably going to attack that more after both of

our solo projects come out.

AllHipHop.com: You’re

being pretty secretive about the moves you’re making. You don’t want to give

the people something to look forward too?

Jim Jones: You

just got to stay tuned. I don’t like to f**k up my cover. I like to get that

low money.

We fly high – Jim Jones ft Diddy, Juelz & Lil Wayne

Hip-Hop Rumors: Young Buck Signs To T.I.? Disturbing Tha Peace Fight! Dr. Dre’s New Artist?

DISCLAIMER:

All content within this section is pure rumor and generally have no factual info outside of what the streets have whispered in our ear. Read on.

TODAY’S RUMORS!I said this yesterday and I’m just re-running it.

You know how Barack said he wasn’t going to take money from the big corporate financers and really relied on the people? Well, that is how I am going to approach the rumors from here on! I want the thousands of people that read this page to help me make it better and better and better. I am only one person, lets be real here, and I bust my tail daily. I have Shelz helping me out a too, but that’s two people. If you help me, help you…it’s a win/win.

Soooooo…if you SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING! Email me at [email protected]. You know, there is no rumor that’s too small, no tip that I ignore so people lets do it!

YOUNG BUCK GOING TO GRAND HUSTLE?

I have a lot of respect for Young Buck as an artist. He’s

damn good. Sadly, he is still tied into a deal with G-Unit. From what I heard,

Buck and his new management have been trying steadfastly to get out of the

G-Unit deal to get on with the business of making music. Anyway, if Buck can

get out of this deal, I am hearing he could sign with T.I.’s

Grand Hustle. It would be a good way to start off 2009, since 08 was a tough

one.

A REAL DISTURBING OF THE PEACE?

A man by the name of Charles Miller was arrested a

fort-night ago after he was involved in an altercation of sorts with Chaka Zulu

of Disturbing Tha Peace. I don’t have the full scoop,

but it seems that Miller was involved in the altercation at 300 Bowling Alley

in Atlanta.

This Miller man is related to that chick that accused Shaq

of stalking her. The charges were later dropped. Now, somebody told me that Shaq and Chaka are cousins. Now, that’s seems to be the

spark that got thinks lit right up. Anyway, the chick’s crew was there and they

clashed with Chaka’s DTP crew. I don’t believe Chaka was involved overtly, but I

heard they were getting their tussle on right there in the bowling alley. There

was even food being thrown around like a good ol’

fashioned food fight.

THE LATEST BREEDING GROUND DOWN WITH DRE?

AllHipHop’s Breeding Ground has

done pretty good, but the unsigned portion of AHH might have hit the jackpot. Checkout the latest in rumor land. Breeding Ground artist

Rain is allegedly being pursued by the good doctor himself. The rumor is that Dre might be backing the North Carolina rapper who has been flying in

and out of LAX over the last month and a half. What could he be doing out

there? Dre is recording the infamous Detox album that has been anticipated by millions of fans

across the world. Will Rain be featured on the album as his newest protege? Guess we will have to wait and see. Story

developing…

A MUSLIM FAN WRITES BUSTA RHYMES ABOUT “ARAB MONEY”

Well, I tried the hold off on this as long as I could, but

it seems that there is some ire raised in the Muslim community about the new Busta song, “Arab Money.” I am not an expert on being

Muslim, but I have gotten several emails on this. The following represents the

most articulate, well spoken and respectful of all of them.

Dear Busta

In Arab money remix

pt1 in the chorus you used (bismillah ulrahman ulrahim alhamdullillah rab ulalamen) which is a Quranic

verse from the first surah (chapter) in the Holy Quran, as an Arab and a Muslim it’s prohibited to sing or

cite a Quranic verse in combination with music and

most Muslims will find this disrespectful, as a fan I think it’s great to have

a song about you getting Arab money, and you mentioned Prince Walid bin Talal AL Saud and I am from the same country as he is and I’m sure

both of us respect the value of your work. I’m afraid this misunderstanding

will be interpreted as an offensive and disrespectful way by some people and I

trust that you wouldn’t upset and disrespect your Muslim and Arab fans and I’m

quite sure that you didn’t know that using a Quranic

verse in a song is disrespectful and for that you are excused as in Islam if

someone did a sin without knowing it is a sin, he/she will be forgiven by

Allah, Mr Busta If you are

looking for a hot Arabic verse you want to use in Arab money remix part2 plz contact me. (If you want to get at him, let me know, Busta people.)

I’m really lookin forward for Back On My B.S.

and keep that hot lava comin.

Your biggest Arab fan but no stan

WHAT! KANGOL KID AND ROXANNE MAKE OUT?

This is definitely one for the old school. It is interesting

though. You know the UTFO hit “Roxanne Roxanne,”

right? Well the song was huge and also spawned the career of “The Real Roxanne,”

a hot Latina

not to be confused with Roxanne Shante. That song

came out like 25 years ago! One of the rappers in UTFO, Kangol

Kid, was tonguing down The Real Roxanne at a recent event.  Apparently,

there was a huge beef with these two and it looks like they made up in a big

way! The two had not spoken until last week at a show in New York where the olive branch was

delivered and sealed with what appears to be more than a

friendly kiss.  WOW.

ILLSEEED’S QUICKIES

You know, I have concluded that Slaughter House (Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz, Royce and

Crooked I) might be the saviors of hardcore Hip-Hop. But, I am hearing that

Stat Quo might be trying to join the crew as their Southern Connect.

I am sure somebody is going to have something to say about

this, but I am hearing Hot Rod has been dropped from G-Unit.

Kenjo (of Field Mob fame) is

working with a new R&B cat who has just signed with DTP. I don’t have his

name but I heard the tracks are fire. Also, Field Mob and solo Smoke are still

working on their music.

Ron Browz is totally on Motown

Records. Stevie Wonder has to feel some sort of way

about that. Check

out Stevie get down on the talk box…like 45 years ago

– way before T-Pain!!

Ludacris, T.I. and Young Jeezy came out in support of Democratic Senate Candidate

Jim Martin during a “Rally For Change.” I am not sure

if this move helped, because the Republican won.

I didn’t even know The Dream was set to release a new CD.

Guess what? His scalp has receded and the album has been pushed back.

Jim Jones just finished a movie and, from what I heard, it’s

a Blair Witch for the hood.

You probably heard this already, but Will Smith might be

playing the part of Captain America.

Hmmmm….not

sure about that one.

If I wasn’t clear yesterday, I want to clarify: I think Plaxico Burress is a damn fool.

JASIRI X RETURNS!

My homey Jasiri X brings back that

political, real heat with the second season of “This Week With

Jasiri X-Episode 10.” Check it out.

JR WRITER VS MAX B

As you know Max B has said on the record that Jr Writer got jacked or something for his jewels or

something. Now, this rumor has been lingering around the hood for quite some time.

Anyway, Jr Writer has issued a diss

of Max B…here it is:

JIM JONES NEEDS MAX B?

Uh, I don’t think that Jimmy needs Max B for anything

really. It seems like he’s doing OK. But, a person that recently saw Jim at the

Mercury Lounge in New York

seems to think otherwise. Obviously, everybody has opinions, but this dude

really knows Jim’s work. I am really not all that familiar with Jim and Max’s

working relationship, but apparently Max did a whole lot of singing on the songs.

Well, there seemed to be a stand-in doing the Max B parts, but this person

really wasn’t able to carry a tune like Max. Anyway, I didn’t know Max could

sing like that. I heard Jim performed in front of a live band and also had a

DJ. I heard the crowd went nuts for the old Dip Set songs though. Freakey Zeke was there and did some of his songs…he did not

bite anybody though! Juelz was also there too.

Apparently there was some dude named Mel Matrix that was very impressive. There

you have it.

SHEESH!

I know when a rumor is going to start some mess and when its

not. I should know better! Like I said, I don’t confirm anything on this page,

because they are all inherently false a rumors. Sooooooo….yesterday,

there was a rumor about Global Music Group, but they

have issued a counter statement of sorts. Their side changes how things are

viewed indeed.

Greetings,

I am Roland Turner the CEO of Global Music Group. I

am writing you today to show my displeasure in your website for posting rumors

and or stories about our company without even investigating the source. The

rumor today was sent to you by one of our artist FORMER employee’s that was

fired last week and also banned from our forum.

Global Music Group is a very reputable company with

19 great artists. I will always be available for any question and will be glad

to give full disclosure about our company.

Sincerely,

Roland Turner

Global Music Group, CEO

Roland sounds like a nice guy. I just don’t need to talk to

him really.

SIGNS THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN END

AW, HELLLLLLL NO! This mess is going to be over by 2013!

According to a recent report by CNN, terrorists are going to attack the US with

biological weapons within the next five for so years. See the report:

Terrorists are likely

to use a weapon of mass destruction somewhere in the world in the next five

years, a blue-ribbon panel assembled by Congress has concluded.

Police watch over

travelers at New York’s

Grand Central Terminal before Thanksgiving.

They are more likely

to use a biological weapon than a nuclear one — and the results could be

devastating, the chairman of the commission told CNN.

“The consequences

of a biological attack are almost beyond comprehension. It would be 9/11 times

10 or a hundred in terms of the number of people who would be killed,”

former Sen. Bob Graham said.

He cited the flu virus

that killed millions of people in 1918 as an example.

“Today it is

still in the laboratory, but if it should get out and into the hands of

scientists who knew how to use it for a violent purpose, we could have multiple

times the 40 million people who were killed 100 years ago,” he said….

Aw, this

sucks. Read the full story by clicking here.

SHELZ GETS BIZZY WITH THE RUMORS & NEWS

Dupre Still Looking for Representation?

Just In case you were concerned about Violator reppin Spitzer’s favorite h#####, as I’m sure many of you

were. Violator released this statement

on Monday:

“Despite media reports, Chris Lighty

and Violator Management do not represent Ashley Dupre.

Lighty helped negotiate an interview for Dupre with Diane Sawyer, and has no further involvement in Dupre’s career.”

Now there, you may sleep well tonight.

Meth Gets Back at Flex….

This might be old. I don’t know, but the interview was like

two months ago. Anyway, Funkmaster Flex was interviewed by the good folks here at

AHH and mentioned that Method Man was the most overrated rapper he ever

encountered. Meth obviously didn’t like the statement

too much and his reply included, but was not limited to:

“He can’t even put a price tag on what I do and even

say I’m overrated because I got love out here in these streets. Can he do

that? Can he go around his way and walk

around free with his jewelry on? Hell f*ck no.

How overrated is that my dude? I ain’t bragging. I’m

just being honest. Overrated? Eat a d*ck

up until you hick up you fat f*ggot.”

Did Meth mention anything about

his lyrical ability? Flex didn’t say he

was an overrated around the way jewelry wearer. I’m just sayin..

Curtains and Fred…?

Never heard of them, but a Clark Kent co-sign is no small ish. I’m digging

through the internets right now. Check him giving his take on the state of NY

Hip Hop, something I have been pondering as well.

18 Minutes of Clarification.

I could have sworn I heard that Friends

Betrayed joint months ago. (illseed note: THAT SONG IS OLD AS DIRT!) Maybe I had it confused with something else.

Anyway, Jaz-O talks about his music and Jay and a lot

of other things; including the infamous “sh*tty deal” the Roc offered

him.

MEF, WE LOVE YOU!!!

They keep us talking, but if we stop talking about them then they should worry!

Beanie, Gillie, Philly Rappers Unite For ‘Brotherly Love’ Concert

Former Philadelphia Hip-Hop rivals Beanie Sigel and Gillie Da Kid have put their differences aside and will appear on stage during a free concert next week.

The free “Brotherly Love Concert,” which is being presented by Nike’s ACG brand, will also feature performances by Freeway, Reed Dollas, Joey Jahad and E-Ness.

The concert was the idea of Sigel himself, who is attempting to unify rappers in Philadelphia, some of whom are currently at odds with each other.

“I had an idea to put everyone together in one building and on one stage to start a movement here in Philly and promote unity,” Sigel told AllHipHop.com. “Plus I want to concentrate on the artist now, as I push my own label here in Philly. I want State Property Records to be the vehicle to put them on, so they don’t have to go to New York.”

At one point or another, Beanie Sigel, Gillie, E-Ness, Cassidy and most recently former Major Figgas member Dirty Rik and other rappers in the area have engaged in brutal and sometimes violent beefs.

Nike ACG hopes the concert is a watershed moment in Philadelphia Hip-Hop’s history that will help redefine the city’s rap landscape.

The concert will take place at the Filmore on South Street in Philadelphia, PA December 11.

Doors will open at 5:00 pm.

New EPMD Album Set for Dec. 9th

The nine-year album drought of legendary group EPMD comes to a close in two weeks, as the duo will release their long-awaited 7th album We Mean Business.

The LP comes nearly 10 years after Out of Business (1999), then billed as the duo’s final studio album.

Despite that tagline, the album failed to connect with critics and fans, and to date is the only EPMD album not to go gold.

Cognizant that they’re in an era where profitable record sales are becoming scarce, member Parrish Smith detailed that unlike other old school groups EPMD has grasped the concept of not waiting on labels to create avenues for them.

“Now that we’re in a new era and the game is changed, we realize that it’s different from when we handed in a CD to our first label to being at Def Jam,” Smith explained. “Erick and I created our own vehicle to be able to drop this album. That’s how we came with the title We Mean Business, because we do.”

For the new album, the Brentwood, Long Island natives have enlisted a higher but complimentary list of guests in KRS-One, Raekwon, Havoc, Teddy Riley, Method Man, Devin the Dude, 9th Wonder, Keith Murray, and Redman.

Missing from the new album will be the trademark cutting of DJ Scratch.

Although a member of the group for 20 years, Scratch alleged in an exclusive June interview with AllHipHop.com that his departure was due to a financial/ethical dispute with Erick Sermon.

The first single for the project is the Raekwon assisted “Puttin’ Work In.”

For a limited time, those who pre-order through newburycomics.com will receive an autographed CD booklet.

Orders can be placed at http://www.newburycomics.com/rel/v2_home.php?storenr=103&deptnr=544.

On December 3, the group will host a listening party/art exhibit from 7PM-10PM at the Zune Gallery Space in Los Angeles.

An official album release concert and artwork auction commences on December 8 at the Santos Party House in New York City from 10PM-1AM.

We Mean Business hits stores December 9 via Def Squad/Universal Records.

Hip-Hop Rumors: People Shot & Stabbed at Webbie Show! Allen Iverson and Deelishis? Lindsay Lohan Loves Clipse!

DISCLAIMER:

All content within this section is pure rumor and generally have no factual info outside of what the streets have whispered in our ear. Read on.

TODAY’S RUMORS!

MY DAILY TWO CENTS

Here is my afternoon re-up on the rumors…and read the rumors from this morning! Hip-Hop Rumors: G-Unit’s Next MC’s? DJ Khaled New Def Jam Pres? Ashanti Preg?

ROUGH YEAR FOR YUNG BERG!

Video vixen Jeri J. has turned down the notion that she will be involved in Yung Berg’s reality show. The man just wanted “dark skin shawtys” for his show, but the ladies won’t let him apologize. She sent a note to TheYbf.com and let it be known.

This is Jeri J. I just wanted to comment on the Yung Berg post. While I don’t have anything personally against Yung Berg I have no inclination whatsoever of doing any reality tv shows. I am flattered that he took notice to my work and liked my look, but I am focused solely on my modeling/acting career. Just wanted to clear up any misconceived notions about me doing reality tv, but I wish nothing but the best to Yung Berg and his team.

At least she didn’t diss the lil homey! Hold on, Berg…08 is almost over!

MAYHEM AT WEBBIE SHOWS!

I don’t know how this bypassed me! Webbie performed in Thibodaux, LA, on November 24th and after the show, a 20-year-old woman was shot twice in the head! Man Jeez! Somebody opened fired in a car that held her and her boyfriend. Thankfully, she lived, but is not in critical condition at a Louisiana hospital. Another man was stabbed up at a Webbie show last Friday! Club Pulse was seemingly enjoying a show in Boca Raton, FL when guns started barking. But nobody was just. A was stabbed and sent to the hospital.

NICK CANNON MAKES A MAJOR BUY!

We can expect Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey to be chillin in Aspen. I don’t know if you saw it yet, but ol’ Nick has reportedly bought his wife a luxury spot in Aspen, Colorado. I heard this five-bed room ski lodge cost over a million bucks as a Christmas gift. Wow, Saint Nick is really coming to town early this year, eh?

DEELISHIS BREAKS OFF MARRIAGE AND A.I.?

Deelishis and her fiancée Orlando have broken up. Like we thought that was going to last.

The real strange rumor is that Allen Iverson may be involved with the “Flavor of Love” chick. According to rumors, A.I., Deelishis and some other chicks were seen at the Detroit MGM Grand Casino and a strip joint. Apparently, these alleged rendezvous caused the former Philly hooper to miss a pair of practices. They are saying that A.I., Deelishis and the other babes were looking very much like a foursome. These sports cats are the new rock stars, huh?

MADONNA WINS…A-ROD…NOT SURE

Madonna and Alex Rodriguez are in business! Apparently the pair are looking to shack up, according to the New York Post. They are looking for a spot to share in New York. If you want to get your stalk on, they are reportedly looking around Fifth and Park avenues, “from just above 60th Street through the 80s.” They are looking to buy for $30 million to $60 million. Don’t these people know it has been officially declared a recession?! Sheeesh!

MIKE VICK PART TWO?

Plaxico Burress – SMH! Man, New York is looking to throw the book at this dude now, because he had a gun that was fully loaded and unregistered. I swear…these people. Check out what the NY Times reported:

The mayor also condemned Burress, saying he should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Burress, out on $100,000 bail, did not have a permit to carry the handgun. He is scheduled to return to Manhattan Criminal Court on March 31. Pointing out that the police did not find out about the incident until it was reported on television, the mayor said, “The hospital didn’t call and the Giants didn’t call, and the Giants should have picked up the phone right away, as good corporate citizens.”

If I am correct, he may be victim of minimum sentencing on this one, a possible 3 years!

ILLSEED’S QUICKIES

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are reportedly going to buckle down and get married for the kids. What’s interesting is this Prop 8 stuff. Didn’t they say they would get married when gay people could marry?

I was recently on Lindsay Lohan’s myspace page (don’t ask!) and guess what she is currently listening too? I kid you not – “Currently listening : Mr. Me Too By Clipse” How crazy is that?

Kelly has a new documentary! “The Diary of Kelly Rowland” watches Kelly Rowland as she tours areas of Africa stricken with AIDS. Real talk: they need to do that in America too.

Did Chaka Zulu of DTP get into some altercation? I heard something minor might have gone down. Who knows. I also heard he might be replacing Jay-Z at Def Jam.

RANDOM QUOTES

Beyonce tells Giant how hard she has to work compared to Jay:

“Jay is so cool. He can just stand on stage completely still, and the audience will go nuts. Me? I have to work it! I’m shaking it and throwing it and rolling around on the floor.”

Do you believe?!

“Despite media reports, Chris Lighty and Violator Management do not represent Ashley Dupre. Lighty helped negotiate an interview for Dupre with Diane Sawyer, and has no further involvement in Dupre’s career.”

Sign of the Times…50 Cent losing money!? 50 talks to the Canadian Press:

“I lost a couple million dollars already. I sit with my investors and business managers and accountants looking at the numbers and I’m like, ‘Yo, the values of stocks in different areas that I invested in are decreasing!’ So I take the loss like everybody else.”

I heard a few people dissing 50 like claiming Karma has caught him. I laugh at that notion. Just look at his bank account and then look at yours. Karma, if it is trying to find 50, it still looking.

EPIC FAIL OF THE DAY

Ahhhhh…Mike Tyson is a legend no doubt, but today he’s going down as a temporary fail. “Iron” Mike reportedly rammed his black Escalade into the visitor’s gate of a private community Thanksgiving morning. This all went down in Las Vegas. According to local ABC, “He went to the visitor’s gate, but instead of driving through the gate when it opened, he veered off and hit the closed resident’s gate,” said Action News reporter Rikki Cheese. “Tyson reportedly backed up and ripped the gate down. Metro was called, and Tyson got a ticket.”

Now, Tyson’s saving grace is that this may have just been an accident and the evil media is making it out to be something else. Mike managed to have his Turkey, I heard and just got a ticket. He wasn’t drunk or anything.

WHEW! WHAT A POWER MOVE

Shout out to Essence…love what ya doing with the place.

MORE ILL PICS

COUPLES SWAG

Jay-Z and B are the most mature couple out in the land.

Why don’t they just get it over with…get married! Also, Ashanti clearly isn’t pregnant.

Watch out for PETA, Diddy. I don’t think they want it though.

The Def Man and the Rev…

I’m sorry Wolf Boy. I wasn’t even trying to clown you last week. Get better.

They really need to consider a remake of “Teen Wolf,” real talk. PEACE

Soulja Boy Donates Toys for the Holidays

Soulja Boy has delayed work on his forthcoming album to participate in the 6th annual Toyz N Da Hood charity event, which donates holiday toys throughout Atlanta during the month of December.

Toyz N Da Hood was founded by Hittmenn DJ president Robert “Kaspa” Smith, and is partnered with the non-profit Kids with Strong Opinions, Inc.

Together the two organizations reach out to Atlanta-based celebrities and present them with opportunities to give back to their native communities.

Their past events included participation from Chris Brown, Akon, Young Jeezy, Polow Da Don, Mr. Collipark, and Devyne Stevens.

As a Hip-Hop superstar that came from very humble beginnings, Soulja Boy jumped at the chance to assist in bringing a joyous holiday season to his young fans.

“It’s all about putting smiles on kids’ face this holiday season,” Soulja Boy told AllHipHop.com. “I’m happy to do anything I can during these hard economic times to make a kid’s holiday season a little brighter. Growing up I didn’t have much, so I can relate to these kids and know how important it is to them. To see how excited they get when we donate all these toys is worth anything I can do to make that possible.”

A toy drive will run through December 17 at various Atlanta middle and high schools, where students will compete to collect the most toys for their school.

The winning school will earn a free concert featuring top Hip-Hop stars from the region.

Last year, the drive succeeded is disseminating over 20,000 toys. This year’s goal is 50,000.

On December 19, Soulja Boy hosts the centerpiece toy drive event at Atlanta’s Walmart, located on 6149 Old National Highway.

In addition to signing autographs and copies of his latest album isouljaboytellem.com, the collected toys will be donated to underprivileged kids and low-income families.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?: Ahmad

At the age of 17, West Coast artist Ahmad Lewis secured a

record deal with Warner Bros. through the now defunct Giants Records while

still a senior in High School. Ahmad quickly broke out of the gate with his

widely popular song “Back in the Day” which made fans look back and reminisce

on their own days of growing up in Hip-Hop.

Although the

West Coast scene was mainly a haven for gangster rap, Ahmad was one of the few

artists that attained a level of success without resorting to violent lyrics or

controversial content in his music. Unfortunately his spot in the limelight

wasn’t long and Ahmad soon turned in to one of those artists that people ask, “Whatever happened to?,”

on occasion.

Ahmad has recently resurfaced in a number of major news

outlets such as The Los Angeles Times due to his successful return to school.

While attending Long Beach City College, Ahmad achieved Valedictorian honors

and in turn was accepted by Stanford University to continue his education with

the help of additional funding by the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation.

In addition to his goals for a PhD, Ahmad is also back

making music with a new album entitled The

Death of Me which he has

informed us will be out shortly. It will be his first solo

album since his self-titled 1994 release. In this new exclusive interview,

Ahmad discusses the ups and downs of his career and his successful return to

school – and how you can possibly do it too.

Ahmad f/ Ras Kass & Saafir “Come Widdit” Video

AllHipHop.com:

Was there ever pressure from your label for you to make music with a harder

edge?

Ahmad: No doubt,

especially from the suits and executives. It even persisted after my band, 4th

Avenue Jones, was signed to Interscope. We had that pressure too, although they

signed us knowing what we were about. They were like, “Do you hear what’s on

the radio? You’ve got to give us some of that.” And I was like, “I’m the antithesis

of that. We don’t care about that.”

You’ve got to understand that a lot of these record company

people and executives could be selling rubber duckies. They don’t care about

music. They are not music people. It’s not like the days of Clive Davis and

Quincy Jones. Now you have cats that come out of business school and it doesn’t

matter whether it’s rubber duckies, ice cream or CD’s—it’s a product. Whatever

the public is asking for, that’s what you give them. It sounds good to give the

people what they want but the problem is they create the climate to influence

what people want—then they give them that. It’s a real circular logic

when you think about it.

People don’t really want that, it’s just that they have been

so accustomed to hearing that, that they grow to want

it. Every time you see something positive come forward like a Lauryn Hill, OutKast or Kanye West, what

happens? People soak it up. They are so deprived that they embrace it. I don’t

believe that people don’t want music that is conscious. I just believe that

they don’t have access to it.

Ahmad “Back In The Day” Video

AllHipHop.com:

Let’s talk about the song that started it all for you, “Back in the Day.” You brought a lot of people back to their

younger days with that one. How did the song come about?

Ahmad: “Back in

the Day” was really organic. It was the last song that we created for my

self-titled album. I was in my girlfriend’s room listening to Teddy Pendagrass’

“Love TKO.”  I decided to make a

record out of it and sample the break. I took it to the studio and hooked up

with some of my producer homeboys and put the music down.

After the beat was created I was trying to figure out what I

wanted to say on it. I decided on talking about everything we did growing up

from Junior High School to now. I started calling around to my friends asking

them what they remembered from the days. That’s the feeling that the song has.

It’s a sociological document that describes a lot of the things that [were]

significant during those periods of time. I love that song for that reason. As

soon as it comes on you are transported to a certain moment in time.

AllHiphop.com:

The song garnered a lot of attention, but what happened after that? We really

didn’t hear much from you after that song.

Ahmad: After

“Back in the Day” came out, I toured extensively. I came back home and made a

second album. During the interim of my first album and second album, I became

even more conscious. Through the process of touring it solidified my

understanding that everything that they were selling in terms of commercialism,

the debauchery and hedonism that often comes with the lifestyle of a musician—it was all make believe and no happiness was to be found there. It was like

cotton candy. It looked big and puffy but when you take a bite it’s actually

nothing.

When I came home I wanted to make a record about all of

that. I told myself that I was going to be even more conscious this time. My

label was like, “We don’t even accept this record. We’re not putting it out!”

Shortly after that, they went out of business. I then had to fight to get out

of my contract. Even though they were out of business, they didn’t want to lose

me as an asset because I had some success. So I was shelved for a couple of

years.

That whole experience made me a little bitter but then I

came back and formed a band called 4th Avenue Jones and we got a

record deal with Interscope. We toured but our album was never released on

Interscope. We put out a series of independent records. We did shows on The

Wake Up Show and other underground outlets so I’ve been active. In terms of the

success that the “Back in the Day” song had, I was never able to equal it. I

was never in that type of position again where I had that label support but

because I love Hip-Hop, I never stopped making music.  Cats in L.A. and on the underground know that I gave it all

that I had. As far as history goes I feel that I am one of the tightest cats to

have come out of the West Coast.

4th Avenue Jones “Move On” Video

AllHipHop.com:

Now you recently made a decision to go ahead and fulfill your mother’s original

wishes of you attending college. What prompted that?

Ahmad: I was on

the road touring with my band in Denmark. We were doing a rock concert because

we performed rock as well as Hip-Hop. My son was with me and he was one year

old at the time. We had just finished touring in the States and you know all of

the struggles that come with the road and having to keep up with paying your

band and other expenses after each show. We were struggling and my son was with

me and I was like, “You didn’t sign up for this. You need some stability. You

need to be in a pre-school and see the same friend’s everyday. You need to have

an anchor.”

I told people that I was getting out of the game and going

back to school and they were like, “Why are you going to do that? The only thing

you know is music. How are you going to support yourself going back to school?”

I’ve always had a strong sense of believing that I could do whatever I set out

to do and that comes from having a strong mother. I told myself that I wasn’t

going to lose. I didn’t know how I was going to manage but I knew that I wasn’t

going to lose. I went back to school with the intention of doing my best and my

best turned out to be Valedictorian.

“A lot of times I feel sorry not just for Hip-Hop

artists but for people in general who do something well and then buy into the

notion that’s all they can do. I knew that I was a good rapper… But that’s

not all that I’ve ever been. I am a scholar, an artist, a father, a friend, an

intellectual.”

AllHipHop.com:

What was your mom’s reaction when she learned you would finally be going to

college?

Ahmad: She was

excited. My mom went back to school late in life as well and received her

Master’s Degree from USC. She’s been the model for everything that I am doing

now. Since she was able to accomplish it, I knew that it was possible for me

also.

AllHipHop.com:

Did she give you any “I-told-you-so” type of reactions?

Ahmad: No. I

bought a house from this music business so it’s not like I need to do what I

didn’t do, now it’s just time for me to do something different. A lot of

times I feel sorry not just for Hip-Hop artists but for people in general who

do something well and then buy into the notion that’s all they can do. I knew

that I was a good rapper because I invested hours upon hours upon hours of time

to perfect that craft. But that’s not all that I’ve ever been. I am a scholar,

an artist, a father, a friend, an intellectual, so many things. Why

paint myself in to a corner? Not only am I going to go to college but right now

I am also putting the finishing touches on my new album. I’m doing it all.

4th Avenue Jones “Stereo” Video

AllHipHop.com: So

you ended up being a Valedictorian at Long Beach City College and now you are

going to Stanford University. What are you studying for there?

Ahmad: I’m

finishing my undergraduate degree. My goal is to get a PhD in Social Welfare.

I’m a Sociology major at Stanford. I transferred there

and out of 1200 people they only selected 21 transfers. For me being from a

community college and you have people transferring in from bigger schools, it

was really remarkable.

AllHipHop.com:

With all of the rappers using the Doctor title in their nickname, you could be

the first rapper that is actually a Doctor one day.

Ahmad: Exactly!

Dre and I will have to hook up and do a record then [laughs]. I believe that

Roxanne Shante got her PhD.  You can verify that. [Note: Roxanne Shante received a PhD in

Psychology from Cornell University]

“If you have the grades, the will and the desire

– it will happen. There will be nothing that can stop you from going to

college. People don’t let money stop them from making demo tapes, buying studio

time or getting those Jordan’s.”

AllHipHop.com:

You secured financing for your education through the Jack Kent Cooke

Foundation?

Ahmad: Yes.

Stanford is paying for most of my education, housing and other expenses.

Whatever they don’t cover, the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation covers for me. Jack

Kent Cooke also has a network of scholars that I am able to tap into and I have

developed some serious friendships based on that network. There is a support on

every level that they supply.

AllHipHop.com:

For any rapper or fans out there that wish to go back to school, what do you

recommend?

Ahmad: That’s the

question I’ve been waiting to answer. First off all there needs to be a belief

in one’s ability to get it done. Second you have to have optimism and hope to

get it done. Hopelessness is a scourge in our community and the reason we don’t

do things is because we don’t hope to do them a lot of times. Understand that

you can go to college – Stanford and Harvard were built for you to go

there. It’s not for other people only – it’s for you. Get that in your

sights and tell yourself that you are going there. Then develop the will to do

it.

Put down the weed and turn off the PS3 and read a book.

Don’t just go to a concert but go hear a lecture also. There are lots of free

lectures going on out there. Take notes and figure out what it is to be a

scholar. Be a student of life. Understand why you are in your predicament.

Understand the game so we can play it. Look at me – I did it. I grew up in

South Central Los Angeles, poor, black, short, dark-skinned – and I’m

winning.

AllHipHop.com:

What about people who say they can’t afford it?

Ahmad: I love the

city college system. When I went back to school, I didn’t have much money but I

pretty much did my first two years of college for free. There would be grants

that would pay for the books and other needs. The State also has money

available to help you – and honestly where there is a will there is a

way. Even if you have to take some type of loan and go in to a little debt, a

college graduate on the average makes three or four more times over a lifetime than

those that just graduated from High School. If you have to go into $20,000 of

debt to get a four year degree, that will more than pay for itself once you

graduate. Don’t let money be the reason that you don’t go. If you have the

grades, the will and the desire – it will happen. There will be nothing

that can stop you from going to college. People don’t let money stop them from

making demo tapes, buying studio time or getting those Jordan’s. You can do

it.

Bone Thugs Reunite On Stage; Announce “Uni 5”

Last night (December 1) Los Angeles played host to the reuniting of the original five man roster of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony.

The reunion is 10-plus years in making.

Over the last decade the group became fragmented due to infighting and the incarceration of Flesh-N-Bone.

Flesh-N-Bone was sentenced to 11 years in 2000 on assault charges and released in July and the group reconciliated, paving the way for a reunion.

Hundreds of fans had to be turned away at the Club Nokia venue, and lucky attendees were treated to such classic Bone tracks as “1st of Tha Month,” “I Tried,” “Notorious Thugs,” and the Grammy-winning “That Crossroads.”

As the group plans their new album Uni 5, Krayzie Bone states that despite their various squabbles over the years, the members realized that their bond as “brothers” trumps all.

“We are just like any real family;we fight and have disagreements, but at the end of the day, we are brothers, from our skin down to our Bones!” exclaimed Krayzie Bone to AllHipHop.com. “Bone Thugs-N-Harmony will be a family, unit, team, and group, always.”

Since debuting in 1993, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony has sold 24 million records in the United States, and 40 million albums worldwide.

They are one of the most successful groups in Hip-Hop history with three multi-platinum albums (Creepin’ on ah Come Up, E 1999 Eternal, The Art of War), a platinum album (BTNHRessurection), and a gold offering (Strength & Loyalty).

At press time, Bone Thus-N-Harmony’s ninth studio album Uni 5 is due out on June 30, 2009.

Akon: The Truth Will Set You Free

With the birth of every hitmaker, it seems there is a

controversy waiting in the wings to rattle the cages of success. Controversy is

the one ailment that platinum records, a large entourage, and millions of

dollars do nothing to assuage. No one knows this better than Mr. Konvict Music

himself, Akon.

Akon burst onto the music scene in 2004 when his hit single

“Locked Up” topped the Billboard charts. Since then it has been one hit record

after another for the West African entertainer. Aside from his massive

achievements as an artist, Akon has also achieved significant success as a

producer and songwriter working with the likes of Leona Lewis, Kardinal

Offishall, and 50 Cent just to name a few.

However despite his prolific musical abilities, in the past

year he has been in the news more for controversy than for his music. In April 2007, Akon received backlash for

having on-stage simulated sex with fifteen-year-old Danah (Deena) Alleyne, at a

club in Trinidad and Tobago which was supposed to be a club for those who were

21 and older.

Then in June 2007

lightning struck twice, this time for throwing a young fan off of his stage

after he threw an object towards Akon during the performance. Then adding grist

to the rumor mill in April 2008, “The Smoking Gun” published a report which

implied that much of Akon’s criminal past was a complete fabrication.

Yes, to many it

would seem that there are many questions surrounding the multifaceted

entertainer. Fortunately, it also seems that Akon has answers.

AllHipHop.com Alternatives: If you could just talk a bit

about the title of the album and why you picked it.

Akon: Freedom.

This new album – it literally is freedom to me. Jumping off the first

album with all the struggle going into the Konvicted album and tying everything with the story,

originally this album was going to be called Acquitted. But I started to notice how the whole “Konvict

Movement” started off as more of a positive venture for the people, so you can

understand how you can take a negative situation and transpose it on a positive

level.

As time went on the translation of it started to steer away

a little bit, and I thought that the media really didn’t understand what the

movement was going towards and it started to turn into something negative.

Because of that a lot of the controversies kind of tainted the brand as well.

So before we actually lost the whole movement, I wanted to find a way to

resurface the brand and try to find a better way to translate it to people that

wouldn’t understand that struggle had they not been there.

So instead of naming the album Acquitted, I decided to name it Freedom, which means the same thing, but just says it in a

different way so it sounds more positive. It was more so just that who I am as

an artist and how I’m growing. I actually had the freedom to do what I wanted

to do on a musical level.

AHHA: Sonically what can we expect different on this

album than your previous albums?

Akon: I think every

album you are definitely going to hear the growth. From Trouble

to Konvicted and now Freedom. You are definitely going to hear the difference and

the growth of it. I’ve been traveling a lot, so I got the chance to experience

a lot of different sounds. Coming back I realized everyone had already adopted

the “Konvict” sound. So it wouldn’t have felt like growth if I continued with

that same sound. I think it was about that time where we had to change up. Now

we are actually going to push the envelope a little bit more and take it to a

whole other level, bringing the Euro sound here to the States.

AHHA: What do you think has been the biggest

misconception about you?

Akon: The biggest

misconception I think is the fact that I was known as a convict. It was more so

the traditional meaning what a convict is. Not knowing who I am and what I do

just outside of music alone. They [people] could easily misconstrue me for

being a real convict. I think that was the most misconstrued thought people

might have had.

‘Cause if you really didn’t know my history or know the

whole story, you could easily think, “Oh he’s just another dude coming out if

jail that’s ignorant that’s just trying to find a quick dollar and doesn’t care

about nothing and nobody. He does this and that to his fans and so forth.” You

know what I’m saying? It was definitely the opposite of that.

AHHA: Who are you today and how do you feel like

everything you have been through has changed you?

Akon: Believe it or

not, everything I’ve been through I think has made situations better for me.

Even thought it might have seemed bad. It actually made situations better

because it allowed those experiences to be focused on – Number One.

Number Two – it allowed people who normally didn’t know who Akon was to

be exposed to me and gave them the opportunity to research who I am and what

I’ve done and get to know the artist.

Then it actually helped in a lot of different ways because

it saturated the story, which actually saturated me. Because of that, when

people did more research and actually got to know me they actually learned

different than what the media was actually portraying. So it actually helped

me. It opened up a lot of doors for me to do a lot of things in

poverty-stricken areas because it opened those doors and let them know that ok

he’s just like us and he’s been through the same situations so he understands.

It was a bigger voice for me because now I can speak in a way to where they can

relate.

AHHA: When “The Smoking Gun” published the report on

their site about you and your criminal past, why do you think it caused so much

of a stir?

Akon: I think it

definitely did because of the status where I was at the time. If I had no

success, no one would have cared. Believe it or not I was cool with the fact

that they did it. All [“The Smoking Gun”] did was gather information that they

figured they had or thought was true. I never denied anything that they said,

because at the end of the day, me fighting it would only create a bigger energy

around the controversy. I always looked at it like regardless of what a person

did in their past, that’s a situation that they should learn from. That should

be a situation that should better the person. I was always the type of person

that if I made a mistake then so be it. I would eat that mistake, but I would

learn from that mistake to make sure that I don’t do it again.

My whole controversy with “The Smoking Gun” was whether I

did three days in jail or three years in jail, it shouldn’t even matter. It was

the actual experience that allowed me to be who I am today. That gave me to

opportunity and even the thought process to become who I am now. Had I not

gotten locked up, I wouldn’t ever have made a record called “Locked Up” or been

Akon or been able to do the things I’m doing today. So while that experience

and making the mistakes and decisions I did when I was young got me caught up,

it still at the same time allowed me to be a bigger person and make better

contributions to the world.

AHHA: Do you feel like “The Smoking Gun” pieced together

the story in a way that was inaccurate?

Akon: That’s exactly

what happened, because there is some truth to it, but there is also alot of

false to it too. Some people will get confused, those who don’t know. But those

who really know will look at things and be like, “Wow I didn’t know that.”

Because they know if “this” is true, they would just actually assume that the

lie goes with the truth. I just think the words could have been put together in

a way that actually reflected the truth. I think some of it was definitely made

to mislead the people. I really believe that.

AHHA: Do you feel like you were targeted?

Akon: Oh yeah! Of

course, because there wasn’t no reason for it. Think about it. What reason did

they have to do it? Even to put it out? Let’s say hypothetically that all of it

was true. I would have just come out and said it. The same way I admitted the

fact that I got locked up. The same way I admitted the fact that whatever

mistake I made that I did it. One thing about me – I never had a problem

with attacking whatever issues there were or admitting to my wrongs or

wrongdoings.

Anything that was said in that article that was untrue I

would have came out and said no they are lying. Anything that I felt like was

true I would have said yeah I did it…and? I’m not the person to run away from

it. If you noticed after that article it stopped there. There was no relevance

to keeping it moving.

AHHA: Do you have any regrets from the past couple of

years?

Akon: No. Not at

all. Never. My Grandpa always told me that some things you think are good for

you often times are bad for you and things you think are bad for you can be

good. That just goes to show you that in life everything that happens is all

written. But you can control how it’s done. A lot of times that determines the

kind of person you will be remembered as. Prime example, hypothetically let’s

say that you might pass away tomorrow. You can determine how you are going to

die, but you are going. You are either going to commit suicide or you are going

to run in front of a truck.

You can determine how that fate is going to happen. But the

fate is going to happen either way. So when things happen, I always look for

some sort of positivity in that situation. Because that can always open up

bigger doors for you. So I think everything had to happen for the success to be

where it’s at. I always look at everything as fuel or energy on a positive

level to just further my career or whatever dreams and aspirations I may have.

So I never look at anything as a bad situation.

AHHA: Another drama that has followed you has been the

many discrepancies about your age. A lot of people in entertainment are

misleading or flat out lie about their age. Why do you think it was such a big

deal when you did it?

Akon: I just never

really told anybody my age. Period. I’d rather you just not know. So if anybody

put an age on there, they did it on their own free will. They figured it had to

be done, so they put it there. I don’t remember me ever telling anyone how old

I was. And reason being is because I don’t think it’s important. So the hell

what. I could be 50 I could be ten. Does it matter? The one thing I do know

about the industry is once they do know your age, you got a ten year lifespan

from that time they know how old you are.

Like I could be 55 right now. Like really. I really could be

that old. But you would never know that. The day I tell you that, if I try to

put out another record they wont support it because they will think I’m too

old. So I figure if you never know my age, then it won’t ever have to be an

issue. As long as you like the stuff that we are putting out and you are

supporting everything that we are contributing to music or whatever we decide

to go into later, you are buying it because you love the fact that it makes you

feel great or you just love it as a fan as opposed to my age, my gender, my

experience or whatever that may be. I just felt like age was never really

important.

AHHA: You have definitely worked with a lot of people

over the years, whether as a producer or on your own albums. Is there anyone

you want to work with but haven’t?

Akon: I have never

worked with Jay-Z and I would love to work with him. And I haven’t worked with

Beyonce yet. Those are the only two I haven’t really worked with yet. I’ve

pretty much worked with everybody else. I can’t really think of anybody else

that I haven’t worked with that I would personally like to work with. Those are

the only two left on my list.

AHHA: Looking back to all you have been through in the

past two years – from “The Smoking Gun” report, to the incident with the

underage girl in Trinidad, the incident with throwing the fan off the stage, is

there anything you would have done differently?

Akon: Well

everything I would have done differently, I’m doing differently now. And it’s

only because of those incidents. Like now nobody is allowed on stage. Before

every show from three years before that incident, we would grab a fan and bring

them onstage and we would have fun. But naturally it’s perceived by everyone

differently. Everybody does not see it as fun. So we don’t catch that again,

let’s not bring nobody else on stage. Now a lot of things that we would

normally stage in a show, we don’t do that anymore, because it could easily

come out to look extra violent. So we don’t do that anymore.

I also don’t do club dates anymore. Period. I can’t be

responsible for the club’s negligence. I can’t come there and card everybody to

see how old they are. Or somebody may walk in with a weapon and somebody gets

shot and they’ll blame me and my entourage for it. It’s a lot of things and a

lot of stuff that comes with dealing with clubs that if they are allowed to

blame whatever happens on the attraction that was there that night or that

artist or entertainer or whatever, then that’s a big risk for me.

That’s a liability and I don’t want to have that. So guess

what, we won’t even do clubs no more. Unless we have full control of the

environment. Other than that we do the basic things that people ask for. We do

the arenas, we do the stadiums, and we’ll do real concert events where we have

more control over the environment. I think that’s more important because a

small incident can kill a career. It almost killed mine had I not had the right

people in place to help diffuse the situation.

AHHA: A lot of artists say that they don’t read internet

blogs or gossip magazines, but they say the hardest part is when their families

see it and read negative things about them. Would you share that sentiment?

Akon: I think that

is a real valid point because I can’t remember the last time I actually read

something unless a family member or friend came to me and was like, “Yo did you

read that about yourself?” Then I’ll look at it and be like damn, if they only

knew. Sometimes I think people will write without full information. They don’t

have accurate information before they just go with a story, not understanding

how many people it actually affects. That’s the part that’s sad, because

sometimes they will just hear something through the grapevine or just grab a

rumor and remix the rumor a little more to make the story more compelling.

Not understanding that it’s more to that story and there are

a lot of people that person actually supports. Not only that person’s family

and friends, but even employees at that point. Because if that article destroys

that person, that’s a lot of people that are out of jobs. So I think that part

needs to be taken a lot more serious.

AHHA: So where do you go from here? What’s next for you?

Akon: After music,

I’m probably going to get into movies. I always wanted to get into movies. You

know, score some movies, direct some movies, write a couple scripts and

eventually act in some of them one day. I think that’s probably the next step

after this. I feel like I have accomplished everything on the music side that I

wanted to accomplish. I think there is really nowhere else left to go besides

the one thing that is tied to it, which I think is movies, which I think goes

hand in hand.

AHHA: I wanted to comment on this. Whenever there is an

artist with some controversy surrounding them, there is usually some sort of

warning for the journalist to not ask certain questions or the questions may be

asked without a clear response. Is there any reason you were as open as you

were about everything?

Akon: That is the

only way that you are going to get the truth out. How do you expect them to

know what to write about if you don’t tell them? They are going to write what

they are assuming or what they heard from everybody else. I’d rather they hear

it from me. So that way if it’s written, I can easily say well that’s the truth

or that’s what I told them. That’s what it is. Take it or leave it. Believe it

or not. But If I sit here and run from you and say I’m not talking about that,

then I can’t blame you for what you decide to write, because you don’t know.

[Then] I had the opportunity to clear it up and I didn’t do it!

So you can’t blame a journalist at that point, because they

gave you the opportunity to speak your piece. I love it when they call me

directly when they hear something. Because then I have the chance to speak on

my behalf because a lot of times the story is only told on one side. And that’s

only because the artist or whoever never took the time to speak on their [own]

behalf because they’ve been prevented from other sources.

AHHA: Twenty years from now if someone asks the question

who is Akon, what would you hope the answer would be then?

Akon: I hope they

would say he had a great ear for music and he signed a slew of incredible

artists and gave the blessings back that were given to him. Outside of being a

good producer, a good songwriter, a good family man, and philanthropist, he

definitely set an example for those who were in the same position that he was

in. There are no boundaries when you are thinking positive.
