50 Cent Doesn't Expect "Street King Immortal" To Sell Like Past Albums

(AllHipHop News) At one point last decade a 50 Cent album was expected to easily go at least gold in a week. His major label debut Get Rich or Die Tryin’ opened with 872,000 units sold and went on to sell 8 million copies. His sophomore LP The Massacre pushed 1.1 million copies in its first week, and album number 3, Curtis, managed nearly 700,000 in first week sales as he famously competed with Kanye West’s Graduation.

His last official studio album Before I Self Destruct in 2009 barely cracked 100,000 sales its initial week, and his long-awaited fifth LP Street King Immortal has been pushed back several times. The Hip Hop mogul seems to recognize that at this stage in his career he will not be the top-selling rapper he once was.

“I know I won’t sell as many albums as I did previously,” 50 tells the Miami New Times. “Eminem’s new record sold 700,000 copies and was number 1. I think to myself, ‘Is this where we are? I can’t look at a 7 again.’ He doesn’t do anything else but music. It is extreme focus. It’s his passion.”

As 50 puts it, his mentor and label mate Eminem puts all his time into making music. Meanwhile the Queens rapper has been dipping into other business ventures. He has his SMS boxing promotions, SMS Audio headphones, Street King energy drink, and film/TV work. Even with all that on his plate 50 says he still comes back to music for inspiration.

“[The album’s] done actually. I go back to music because it inspires me,” says 50. “I will feel that I am set, but then I hear something new, and I want to go back to the studio.

50 cent needa drop some music like he used to and get these singing ass rappers out the game

    • Jayson C Williams

50 is a singing ass rapper, he actually destroyed one mans career because of singing, turned around started singing and that shit birthed drake, cudi, & the futures and corny niggaz like that

      • 7yoyo7

Cudi never claimed to be a G though, totally different image and market…

      • Jayson C Williams

Not talking about images and marketing, just simply singing I like cudi I see you do to but not what I was saying

      • Eric Cartman

The hooks of some of 50’s songs did not inspire drake and cudi to do the same… Singing on hip hop songs has existed for at least 20 years, people just stopped hiring r & b artist to do it for them

      • killa

RIGHT BECAUSE IT SAVES THEM $$ IT REALLY AINT A BAD IDEA DNT HAVE TO PAY ANOTHER ARTIST TO SING A HOOK U WROTE

      • Jayson C Williams

Saved them money true but not their careers. Water down music cause most ppl rather hear a singer sing but auto tune has ppl confused.. sadly the person who started auto tune can actually sing smh.. But he boxed himself out of position with auto tune.. So very few features for akon, & tpain

      • killa

everybody u namin had a hell of a career id be satisfied with half of their success

      • mook

        Ja Rule inspired Drake lol

      • Jayson C Williams

        Lol

      • Jayson C Williams

You’re right.. But being he’s the most gangster rapper at the time, it was ok.. Belly sung before 50 was super hot just for te record

      • killa

Gangster super hot? what are these words lol

      • killa

Nigga u corny u online hatin on niggaz 50 gettin money what u got?

      • Jayson C Williams

Well killa I get money too, what do u have? Your whole paragraph that’s in caps bro is a statement of hate especially hating on the most popular rapper right now (kendrick). So you’re a contradicting mf that needs to learn how to work the caps button

      • Obi Won

I don’t think of 50 Cent, during a conversation of Drake or Kid Cudi’s music.

      • Jayson C Williams

We’ll listen to the massacres last 5 tacks half were all singy types of music “emo rap” that you’ll hear quite frequently from either cudi (who I really like) and drake a lot

  • the album aint gonna sell like past ones because Jimmy aint gonna let him put it out!!!
“I AINT GOT NO BOSS!!” “IF INTERSCOPE KEEP DROPPING THE BALL, IMA PUT THE ALBUM OUT MYSELF!!!” remember those lines? he said em like 3 years ago….

    • Jayson C Williams

Truest statement I don’t know wtf DLOUPO⬆️ Is talking about .. But u know some niggaz just talk just to talk. But Jimmy that slimy dirty muthafucka, sad but most industry execs are filthy like this. He made Jimmy rich for another generation. 50 can rub any1 wrong but there just no loyalty in this situation. And I think the gunit click didn’t get that. They thought 50 was good at interscope forever, figured they needed no drive no managers just let 50 handle it. Smh 50 is very smart.. Very. With that said he needs to focus on what’s most important in business and that’s making money, rap isn’t doing that for him or most artists. He struck while the iron was scorching, if he doesn’t reinvent himself or his style than he’ll be a decent rapper for the rest of his career

      • killa

50 FRM ANOTHER ERA HE A LEGEND HE IN THE CONVO WITH JAY, DMX, OUTKAST HIS SHIT IS THAT VIRAL AND HE PAVED THE WAY FOR ALOT OF ARTIST HES 38 NOW ONCE U HIT THAT AGE IF U AINT SOLD ENOUGH RECORDS U NEVA WILL 50 SOLD OVER 30 MILL SHIT NELLY DNT RAP NO MORE HE BEEN IRRELEVANT FOR A LONG TIME BUT BOY HE HAD A NICE RUN THESE THE KIND OF ARTIST U WANT ON YA PROJECT NOT THESE NEW NIGGAZ LIKE KENDRICK SAID THEY JUST NEW NIGGAZ

HE BLEW UP QUICK IT WENT TO HIS HEAD AND YOU KNOW HOW HE REWARDED THE GAME HE SHITTED ON EVERYTHING EVEN FAMILY SUCKA FOR THAT AND I DONT WANNA HEAR ABOUT A VITAMIN WATER DEAL HE DID 7 YRS AGO HE MADE 7 MS LAST YR AFTER TAXES ITS 3.5 FOR U THATS ALOT FOR HIM THATS NOT ENOUGH TO PAY HIS BILLS AND EXPENSES SO WHATS THE FASTES WAY TO GO BROKE? SPENDING MORE THEN WHAT U MAKING. STREET KING IMMORTAL LOL LIKE NAS SAID THESE NIGGAS IS SO REMOVED THEY DONT EVEN LIVE THAT LIFE NO MORE

  • MrNoName2K

Get Rich or Die Tryin’ still go hard today…but i agree with him though. His mixtapes will always be hard..

  • Obi Won

I’m sure 50 is hip, it probably made him feel comfortable seeing Em’s numbers. Sales are different today. Nobody is selling albums like the used to. So it is good that he at least had other business ventures going on. Jigga doesn’t have all those M’s from rap sales, and neither does Diddy.
Unless ur a Drake type that make women feel special, and have some dudes that feel he can rap, big time record sales are a thing of the past. Nobody in Rap is going multi-platinum especially Diamond in this new generation.

    • killa

True its just common sense i wish i had dough like 50 even drake and i dnt like the boy drake but like he said “i got everything i got everything” idagaf i would sing like drake too if it made me sum more $ im tired of being broke i wanna pop bottles in be a star too not get online and judge niggaz album sales shit 150 million off sum water i wouldnt even show my face no more i go chill in my TYSON MANSION and smoke ounces of green n fuk strippers ” im just being honest”

      • Obi Won

LOL @ “150 million off sum water i wouldnt even show my face no more i go chill in my TYSON MANSION and smoke ounces of green n fuk strippers”
        lol, I hear u homie

      • Guest

LOL @ “150 million off sum water i wouldnt even show my face no more i go chill in my TYSON MANSION and smoke ounces of green n fuk strippers”
        lol I dig that homie

      • Jayson C Williams

I feel you but I think it’s the part of actually getting to superstardom that’s really what we want. I don’t want to be so rich that I’m jaded or trying to figure out ways to entertain myself. Like lil Wayne, very very rich but bored as hell.. Skateboarding? This is why tey do drugs to muh money and nothing to do with it.. 30 year old man crashing around on a skateboard..

      • killa

Nah i just want da money i dnt wanna be famous

  • killa

50 you still a winner in my book and should be in everybodies book homie u came a long way nobody eva gave u shit ya moms died in u turned a negative into a positive thats y u a multi millionaire and the rest of us just watching frm the sideline

  • TimeWillTellu1

managed nearly 700,00 in first week sales? Go back to school…

  • KingsCountyCrooklyn

don’t do like them other cats and keep pushing the album back to never be released. drop that album and let it do what it do, got to be at least a couple hits on it to carry over in to those concerts.

  • Thetruth7777

50 lost when took south side of his back He will do tony yayo number lol

  • DollasTX

this niggah is WORRIED about what? RECORD SALES? maaaan, get off that sucker shit – drop that last album – or buy yourself out the rest of that contract – stop worrying about the backlash of low record sales – it aint the sales its how you work the album … this niggah knows this already but still wont get out of his own way

  • before i self destruct was leaked a month early and still sold 165,000 in first week…and eventually went platinum worldwide

    • Darkside

FALSE. 50 is great at manipulating his fans.

He added the first week digital release nrs with the cd release, which dropped a week later & added them up which became the number you said. BISD really did 90k first week. Thats a fact.

      • Jared Dubois

it did 120 first week and 45 k the week b4 itunes. so get ur facts right.. it actually did leak almost a month b4 which was one of the worst leaks in hip hop history at the time. get ur facts right atleast!

      • Jared Dubois

and he had the third highest selling hip hop album in 09 behind emenem relapse and jay-z blueprint 3.

      • Jared Dubois

50 need to stop damaging his own brand. hes on forbes every year without a hip hop album. he hasn’t missed it once. he released my life which sold 140,000 digital download first week and went number 2 in the uk which is higher than any of his singles in the past. so his new music is hitting. but he has lloyd banks who is on fire who sold 225,000 copies of HFM2 independently. and went gold with beamer benz or bentley. but he tries to damage banks and tony yayos brand by saying they cant do it without him

  • king

This fool time has come and gone he will never do em sales because white people will not spend the money and everyone else will download for free.

I really think 5if needs to do something different, as far as a new sound perhaps, maybe like a movie to accompany a release, sort of like a soundtrack. He could try to shake things up musically, because that has worked in the resurrection of careers in the past. As far as the numbers game goes, the numbers always lie, and have for quite some time now, so I think 5if should maintain the attitude that has gotten him this far, and that is high expectations, no more, no less. We should also consider how he came in the game, putting a particular type of energy out there, that has to boomerang at some point. I think he can weather the drought though, and still be successful musically, only if because the less talented, or popular, have pulled it off in times before. Having money is good, but consistency is great. If anyone can do it, 50 can.

  • A NEW sound can definitely benefit 50. It’s not like the dude can’t rap. His music just could use a spritzer… If you get him together with new writers and producers, it would be possible for him to have success with a new sound. 50 has always been good with hooks and lyrics for the most part but the sound that is coming from him just hasn’t changed much. Ppl grow and time/things change. Maybe if he can show some growth from his experiences since striking it big, ppl might be able to relate to that and it can translate into something POSITIVE for the brother.

    Correction:

Before I Self Destruct sold approx 160,000. That’s well over “barely 100,000 sales”.
