Drake's "If You're Reading This It's Too Late" Was Originally To Be A Gangsta Grillz Mixtape

CASH MONEY RECORDS REPORTEDLY HAD NO INPUT OR CREATIVE CONTROL OVER DRIZZY’S “IYRTITL”

(AllHipHop News) One of the big questions surrounding Drake’s If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late was whether the project was a mixtape or an album. According to a report by HipHopDX, IYRTITL is an official album and will count as part of the contractual agreement with his record label Cash Money Records.

Kyle “KP” Reilly of Datpiff.com confirmed the information in a statement to the website. He also revealed the original plan was for the project to be a free mixtape, but a clash with Drake’s label led to If You’re Reading This being a retail release.

“Originally we were in talks to release it for free… and have DJ Drama host and even make it an official Gangsta Grillz… however the label was not in favor of that and they struck an agreement to release the project the retail route and it would count towards one of his albums,” said Reilly. “It was a mutual decision since he wanted to give it away. They [the label] said, ‘Hell no,’ not in those words, so they ‘agreed’ to do it this way as a middle ground and it would count towards his Cash Money deal album total. The label had zero input or creative control over If Youre Reading This Its Too Late.”
