Just keeping it real... You turned a B+ album into a D- Remix Album. Hey, look at it like this...none of these tracks would have made the Real album.. the truth. The Intro is the hottest track on the album, then No Hook, Ingorant Sh!t, and a possible for Blue Magic...the rest???? nope. You have Hello Brooklyn that not even in key with Weez singing.. come on.. listen to it.. music 101.. and other tracks that have been used, sampled or done before.. I'm pretty sure you could have found different tracks for a better fit for Jay-Z than these..and I was waiting for THIS remix album b/c I KNEW it was gonna be fire.. wow, so disappointed this morning. Please tell me this was the cut that didn't make it? I'm not a producer but I have enough musical experience and background to know that you don't just throw tracks together and call it a Remix... This make me wanna pull out the original American Gangster and listen to it now.. and just a word to the producers: Go left when someone has already gone right... meaning do the opposite of what was already done to the album, like make a banging original track that fits the artist vs. just throwing a sample over kicks, sticking Hov on it and calling it that fiyah.. cuz it aint.. Trust me I AM NOT HATING... I love to hear new good hot ORIGINAL beats, artist, etc.. I just had to tell the truth.. take another listen at your own work, you'll see what I'm saying in the long run. Be safe... luv ya all

I bet if you had the chance to live life in Jay Z's shoes, You'd have no complaints. Who else is caking up like him? Hov gets special treatment because he was/is a legend in his craft. You talking about c'mon rap about something else, that proves you missed the concept of the album. So of course you're going to think it was wack. I don't think it was his best effort. But most of these new rappers can't touch it. We hold Jay to his classics, we expect a classic every album. If we held other rappers to that standard. Niggas wouldn't last past their first single.

Understanding the album isn't a a dick licking tactic as you put it...It's not understanding the album and hating on it because it went over your head that makes yall niggas haters. Why niggas gotta be dick lickers in the first place?! Fuck wrong with you and the name callin? Chill with that internet gangster shit....It's lame.

Im sayn good for you Hov your concept was brilliant your timing was sick, but with all that money that went into that album, with that position you have is that all you can give us at such a critical time!!!!!

This is a perfect example of no matter what HOv do niggaz gone hate. First off I think these mixes is trash except for No Hook and Sweet.  Jay is ALWAYS held to a different standard than other niggaz and thats why people always find something wrong wit his shit. He talks about worldly shit on Kingdom Come and people say he's wack and fallin off. He made "Aint I" and people say he talk about his money to much and they want to hear old Jay. He make American Gangster then its like why he taklin about hustlin? No matter what he do somebody gone find something wrong. I mean can niggaz not attempt to put yoself in the shoes of a nigga from the projects who is worth a half of billion?? No! Most niggaz cant even imagine that shit, and if u tell me u would be doing the same shit u did in the project worth  that much I wouldnt call u a "Real nigga" I would call u a fuckin idoit. Niggaz cant even understand his success. So what he gone do become unsuccessful and have friends or be successful and have haters?   AG better then 99% of shit thats been out since The Black Album. I still say Blueprint and Reasonable Doubt the best shits, but to say AG is C+ then its hard to even respect your ear to music. That shit was a classic. The same niggaz that a say Jay wack, will say Wayne the shit, when he aint never had no classic album.

ok i understand what your saying but go back and listen to the whole of his catalogue. he has ALOT of songs talking about other topics, not to mention Kingdom Come where nearly whole album is grown. Plus i could name at least 40 rappers which talk about money, cash, hoes ALOT more than Jay. please dont make me coz ive got better things to do but go back and listen to his music then compare it to all the other rappers and see what you think.

Since I havent heard the whole original album, i guess my ears are "fresh"...meaning, I dont have the need or desire to compare it to the original album(or any of his previous works for that matter)...with that said, I think it sounds pretty good. Very soulfoul tracks, easy to listen to, and sonically they sound good. For the most part the producers did a job they can be proud of

I never said that American Gangster was a classic. So I don't understand your come back. Seems you didn't understand my point either ...water under the bridge no doubt. AG was a concept album inspired by the movie that reflected on his years of when he was doing "gangster" type shit  i.e....drugs, money, cars and hoes....So again I ask why would he rap about something else if the album was a concept?????  Rhetorical question.

@katalyst

Thanks for the hug, I really didn't need it. Nah, I don't feel as though you addressed me directly but you addressed a mass of niggas when you said what you said. Plus the dick licker shit was juvenile. I didn't call you an internet gangster I said your actions was.

Back to the album, my point is that yall are hatin on the AG album because of its content. And what I was saying to you and heartbeat is that the album is one out of 10 that Jay did. It's not a classic, It can not compare to what he has done prior. But the fact that this album was a concept album should ring bells that it was not going to be the same Jay Z that you are used to. Some dudes understand it.....some don't.

Not a dick rider.

American Gangster was far more than a C+ album to me...and even a C+ For Jay-Z is heads above most of these albums out now.

His lyrics were on point.
Beats were pretty much nice
I was surprised that Puff could do what he did for this album (Though I know it was more of his team than Puff himself)

I liked the album. You felt it was C+ are you comparing to other albums that are out now or compairing to Hov's albums because honestly all you can do is compare Hov to Hov.

If that was C+ what the hell was 50's album to you big homie?

Honestly dude Jay-Z can't win for losing. He made a So-So album with Kingdom Come (Though I liked it, it wasn't one of his better albums) and people said he was through, He comes out with A.G. and they complain about him talking about drugs...IT WAS A DRUG MOVIE!!!!!!

People say "It wasn't better than Blueprint, Reasonable Doubt, Black Album" etc....name 5 albums in the last 5 years that are better than Blueprint, Reasonable Doubt & Black Album?

I mean I've learned to say "To each is own" I honestly feel Jay-Z talks to 30 year old people and older.

I can't related to the under 30 music so I let them do their thing, but to me...Nas, Common, Jay-Z, Mos, Outkast etc. are people I listen to...and honsetly NONE of those names have made "CLASSIC" material like they use to...but they are still making albums better than what's out now.

Question...how is Hov talking about the same thing when he spoke on Jena 6 & Imus? Back in Reasonable Doubt or In My Lifetime Hov wouldn't have NEVER talked about that. The album before he address Katrina. The album before that he started addressing his father. None of those things are "Drugs & Material things"

No offense my dude but when I hear people say "I like Hov but.." I never believe it because their dislike for him is clouded. I'm not saying dude can't do any wrong..but saying talks about the same s**t is so off point.

Once again...Jay-Z can't win for losing for people. He's strickly for 30 plus people.

@ Mohamed

I agree with you man. I guess us two feeling Jay-Z will label us "Dick riders" or think he "Walks on Water" *shrugs*

The first line refers to a line in the movie but he relates it to his own life.

I'm not saying Jay-Z is the greatest rapper alive (But he's top 3) but to hear these gusy say he's talking about the same thing man.....you are not listening to the music and just don't like dude...which is cool to each is own...but I NEVER understood why people would go into a Jay-Z room who don't like Jay-Z.

It's like me going to a Souljah boy room clowning his music...WTF am I doing in there in the first place unless I'm just here to hate. If you didn't like A.G. why would you come into a A.G. remix forum?? lol.

It makes no sense.

2nd @ 305 heartbeat...i understand what your saying to a point. See hov is 1 of the few artist who has gained a loyal fan base over his career(me being 1 of them) and in truth it is hard to find flaws in a artist u root 4. Same goes 4 Pac, Face, Nas, Tip, Jacka which are also some of my favorite artist, but being a real nigga i gotta say AG cool, wasn't a classic but it was cool...im not sure whether it's the times, but it didn't have the same effect on me as other albums..ex. lupes, scarfaces...as far as career moves we all know hov catches alotta slack for that shit cuz overall dudes artist don't develop!

@mohamed That was definitely a great verse...Whats your favorite jay song? Album?

wow, lets see hov came to game in 96 till 2008 givin u hits after hits and i understand now.. you want him to start rappin about something else or matta fact u just want him to retire.. thats fine its ur opinion and thats cool im good with that..

but when u rate the album a mere c+.. nooooooo thats when i have to put the boxin gloves on.. how bout we spar and any other person that has doubts about the album.. 2007 lyrics rhyme for rhyme u post ur best rhyme from ur fav artist ill post one from AG..

the way you put ur comments is you would like American G if a young rapper spit his lyrics used his beats and etc.. is that it?  thats what i am getting out of it.. u right black album was a classic i thought that was betta than blueprint, but this shit right here.. this shit right here can be mentioned in the same breath as them.  c+ no A A- B+ even then it woulda been cool.

i just dont like when ppl get mad at jay for rappin about drug life when most likely ur fav rapper talks about the same thing.. i guess its all good for them cause what they only been out the drug game for what 2 3 years.. i see discrimination goin on

on the Jay Z shit, I aint a big fan of dude, sometimes his stuff that heartfelt don't feel genuine to ME, and when he try to be clever to me is obvious and corny most times(Like the Tito line ugh)... I do like some ish, RD of course thats a classic haven't listened anything else in depth so I don't really like these greatest conversations including him cause I think these standards is what really making hip hop so one dimensional right now... But I like Kingdom Come and AG, KC had some real honest moments talking about actual ish and AG beats are knocking, lyrically I think that the man is in a mind frame that he is very comfortable in so for yall not to understand 305 and Katalyst views is being unreasonable. Being a hustler isn't far fetched fa dude at all so stop being asinine, its not like he envisioned the life of a kid who blind and living a life, its about a life that was supposedly very active in this so the imagination and difference lyrics wise isn't really so against his grain. What problems has he caused? And please dont mention violence or drugs because that shit has been around long before hiphop. "Gangsters" were around way back into the early 1900's so what is that statement based off. Secondly, half of the artist on defjam was average at best in the first fuckin place. So yeah he may have did a fucked up job as President but so what he stepped down, it wasn't like he been there for years. Most of them was getting fucked before he had even taken over. And last but not least, you say you burned all of his albums because they only had a few tracks on them...NIGGA PLEASE!!! Who the hell continues to buy albums from artists whot the genuinely believe is wack. You just a MF'in hater. Anyway, HOV keep makin those heroin tracks!

Snoop fucked over one of his groups.

Eazy E Fucked over NWA

Barry Gordy fucked over Marvin Gaye...

And if he would have lived long enough we would have found out that Puff fucked over Big.

People just look for something to hate on Jay-Z. I don't care what he and his crew went through  because most of the time it's a one sided story. I bet you a lot of those dudes weren't steady in the studio...Beans was going to jail over dumb shit messing with his marketing value, yeah I wish Christion would have got more shine on the Roc back in the day..but EFF it that doesn't mean Hov doesn't make hot tracks.

He should had stopped after he made "The Black Album" period I thought that was a very solid album for a so-called "final album" I never been crazy about Jay to begin with b/c he basically made his career biting off of BIG'S rhymes. I hated the fact that I wasted my money on Kingdom Come that shit was PURE GARBAGE!!!! I'm glad I got my money back for that shit. This nigga can fool ya'll and say this was a "concept album" but really what Jay z is doing is nothing more than  a good "Marketing Campaign".
He's using the moment and capitalizing on all the publicity.
to move units
which to me is the only thing brilliant about what AG represents.
as far as it bein a great peice of work, Bullshit!
For Jay to do a concept album he would have to be in a totally different lane because he's been in this Fake dope boy lane since 96!

lets look at a few.

cash money- enough said
Terror squad- remy ma, tripple seis cuban link tony sunshine, dont remember them huh.. thats thanks to the practice of fat joe himself
g-unit- they would put out a YAYO album before a MOP album..?  HUH?
bad boy- lox just got there masters back in the last couple of years
aftermath- joel ortiz? eve?

point is theres bad business practices in each record company but unless u can tell me what the day to day duties for the president of def jam then how can u really blame things on jay of what happened there.  beanie siegal the solution was his worse album.. freeway shoulda got 5 mics and sold a mil for his album o wait didnt 50 cent co produce the album?  jay didnt market them right wait is jay in charge of their tours, cd signings, when they go to the radio station etc..? o well i am sure that you know and you maybe able to explain it to me thanks in advance..

Through all this bullshit...You missed the point. We both agree that AG wasn't a classic album and we both agree that it isn't his best work. You have an opinion that it was a business move at best. Copied this from the web: Peep the third sentence.

American Gangster is the tenth studio album by rapper Jay-Z. It was released on November 6, 2007 in the United States. American Gangster is Jay-Z's first concept album, which was inspired by the film of the same name. The album features production from Diddy & The Hitmen, Just Blaze, and The Neptunes, among others. Guest appearances include Beanie Sigel, Lil Wayne, and Nas. Jay-Z released the a cappella version of the album on his birthday, December 4, 2007.

Music critics praised American Gangster,[1] and noted that Jay-Z was trying more "complex lyrics".[2] The album was released to significant commercial success, despite being pulled from the iTunes Store,[3] selling 425,861 copies in its first week and debuting at number one on the Billboard 200, tying Elvis Presley for the second most number one albums.[4] Rolling Stone named American Gangster the 3rd best album of 2007.[5]

@305   (I FEEL U)

1st, its obvious (easy to see) that everyone debating this is a Jay fan. I been debating this issue w/a few friends since the CD dropped.  I'm a Jay fan too and I'm glad everyone likes AG, I would hate to see Jay fail, BUT I'M NOT IMPRESSED.  To me its not the lyrics I really have a problem w/its the tracks to me.  He reminds me of Nas now. What I mean is the lyrical content is still in tact, its the track selection that fucks me up. I had at least 4 copies of every Jay album ever made and countless MIX-TAPE & CD FREESTYLES, but the fact is this CD does nothing for me. I don't care if it's a CONCEPT ALBUM, I didn't even buy this CD not 1 copy (not even bootleg).  Concept, Soundtrack or Compilation, I just like good music.

W/that being said, this remix version is not bad, but I won't buy it.

305 DO WHAT U DO.  SOUNDS LIKE U STAY FOCUSED ON THIS HIP HOP SHIT.  AHH SHOULD GIVE U A JOB.  GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR MUSIC.

Well i was listening to this mixtape here at work man and to tell the truth i have no complaints about the album, i mean.....
No man alive is going to release classic after classic fam, but for a mixtape that shit is hot material.
When jay z released his first classic "Reasonable Doubt", you have got to understand that jigga was hungry. I mean come on, son was hungry to put his music out, so you know he was amp when he wrote every line to those verses.
After unreasonable doubt every album has recieved grammys awards or have at least gone platinum.
Jay -z is a very talented artis and check this out>>>
What other rapper do you know that releases his whole album for A movie?????
This cat was inspired by a movie and wrote verses to related so please dont hate on my nigga son.

Personally, it has nothing to do with "hate" when I say the cd was "alright". It wasn't classic at all.  "Reasonable Doubt" and "Black Album" were classics. This one is pretty good but no where near classic status.  I think people just got all caught up in the hype of Hov releasing a new cd.  That and the dick riders who refuse to admit when their "hero" releases less than classic material.  Look, one of my all time favorite rappers is Nas. I don't download any of his shit, I buy everything he puts  out, but "Nastradamus" and "Streets Disciple" were WACK!!! Doesn't mean its the end of the world, it just means that he had to come harder on his next shit. Stop playing favorites and just listen with an honest ear.  As for this remix album right here, its not workin for me at all.  Not that the beats are wack or anything, but they just don't fit over the original.  I could see Joe Budden taking these and really utilizing them, but for a Hov album... nah.

I just listened to the album. honestly, I think it confirms for me  that Jay is a dope MC, BUT what makes him HOV and Jigga Man, is his production team.... you already know..

NOT ONE of these beats complement this dude... THIS ALBUM IS A COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME... whoever arranged this album was doing it for themselves, to hear Jay over their beats and feel good about it.

I am not a producer, or an engineer BUT I am a consumer, poet, writer, music lover AND I have sense...However, I will say this too - the only song that gave me a reason to continue listening was Rollin'.. but again disappointed by the next track... I feel like listening to Souljah Boy.. YAAAAAHHH TRICKYAAAAHHH

"I know" is easily the best track on this album, and Party Life. Well I mean we already knew Jada and Style P used that sample in "We Gonna Make". The other hot standout tracks was Success and Fallin. Fallin has that vibe, nice 80's early 90's era. I guess I was looking forward for this track the most, it's one of the best tracks on the original. Blue Magic sounds way better than the original. Last but not least you got to love the American Gangster track. shit is fire.

I don't know what all the fuss is all about. I mean this whole debate was good reading while listening to this mixtape, but everybody is goning to have their own opinion. You can try and sway it all you want, but in the end, it's still YOUR OPINION. What makes a classic album to you may not be the same requirements for the next person. Granted Jay-Z has critically acclaimed albums and gone platinum more times than lil kim's had dicks in her mouth. But there's NO ONE, I reapeat, NO ONE, living that's gonna be able to put out a classic after classic. Because once an artists makes that first one, anything they come out with, EVER, is gonna be compared to their previous one or their best one. It's a fact. No one is a fan anymore in hip hop. We all become record exec's, too worried about how much an artist sold, or our friend who spits better than that person, or deprive'n anyone else a chance to create their own opinon on an album because of how WE feel. Yes he does spit about drugs, money, hoes, cars and all that shit with this album. But everytrack actually says something, and the money, hoes, drugs and shit are characters in the album. Not only does he do that but he also talks about the racism of jenna six, speak on don imus useing hip hop as a scape goat, and our so called "black leaders" speaking for a WHOLE generation and future generations of hip hop that they where against from the start of NWA. So to say he's still spitting about the same stuff he did from reasonable doubt, Blueprint and so on and so forth, is just an unfinished statement. Yes he still involves some of the same things through out his career (i.e. drugs and shit), but he uses those topics in different way to paint a different picture. And artist only has SO many colors, but if his imagination is vast, then there's always gonna be a different picture. But, like I said, that's only MY opinion.

Cats need to grow up and realize that your opinion is your opinion and not try to talk ish about what someone else may feel, as if you're gunna get someone to say, "Oh, you know what, AG is no longer a classic to me, now that you have rammed your opinion down my throat (no homo or, maybe you are). I now think it is hot garbage. Thanks for clearing that up for me." Respect an opinion and that goes for both sides of the argument.
For the record, AG is a classic to me and, now, this remix album, is one, too. Nice picks of tracks AH and Co. Thanx, it's been burned and in rotation in the wip.

Back to the matter at hand.  Heartbeat I've been reading your comments for a while homeboy and sometimes you've been dead on or you miss completely.  How many people in hear like ig'nant rappers...rappers who talk about pushing, murder, and pimping?  Hell I do too.  Well I did but I'm out of that phase in my life.  I'm 23 and a sophisticate, educated black man.  If you want that type of rap Hov made several lps with that kind of tone and did it head and shoulders above the rest (excluding the late greats, but on equal footing).

I can't stand simple rappers with no vocabulary.  Hov has been intricate since day one.  I bought Reasonal Doubt in 1999 while in Germany and it was all I listened to.  When I got back to Tx it was all I listened too.  My sensibilites won't let me listen to an ig'nant MF rapper.  Jay is a very intelligent guy.  No one can do what he does.  That's why he is in the position he is in.  He's a professional.  I don't care about the remix (which is great buy the way) but giving the original a C+, you're out of your damn mind.  For the following reasons:  1. it was one of Hov's most personal albums (ex No Hook)  2.  great storytelling  3.  everything fit perfectly -- the concept was in tact  4.  word play was incredible as usual  5.  Jay addressed political issues  6.  and he is still growing

So don't use the excuse, "There's better things to rap about", to try and mask that you're a hater.  I don't know how many want to be rappers are on the forum but I think they compose the Jay-Z hater fan club because they are salty.  Long live Hovito!
