Jay-Z To Rep The Nets in NBA Draft Lottery

By Chris Richburg

This year’s NBA draft lottery will have something extra for sports fans, as rap mogul Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter will be on hand to represent the New Jersey Nets.

Jay-Z, born Shawn Carter, will be one of 14 Nets representatives that will be seated on the stage when NBA Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver announces the winning order of teams participating in the draft lottery tonight (May 20).

As the lottery approaches, Carter is hoping for a good night for the Nets. "This is very exciting and I hope my nickname 'Lucky Lefty' holds up," said the former Def Jam Recordings president.

The mogul, who reportedly paid $4.5 million for a stake in the Nets as a part-owner, also pushed for the team to move from New Jersey to his native borough of Brooklyn.

The Nets have a 1.1 percent chance of receiving the first pick and less than a four percent chance of securing one of the top three selections for the first time since 2001.

Based on its record for the 2007-08 season, the team is likely to have the 10th pick in the draft if it doesn’t get a top three selection.

The NBA draft lottery will air live from 8 - 8:30 p.m. Tuesday (May 20) on ESPN. The event, which is slated to take place at the NBA Entertainment studios in Secaucus, NJ., will be held before Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals between the Boston Celtics and Detroit Pistons.

The lottery will be followed by the NBA draft, which will occur on June 26.

It's classic because he's only a minority owner in terms of percentage BUT the bigger boss let him have the camera time and high profile air time to further lure Lebron to the them.....2010 is going to be very interesting.

I'm a Diehard KnicC fan, believe me I want to C him in the Garden but as it stands right now he has an already established relationship with Jay-z where as he knows no one within the KnicCs management/ownership.And the KnicCs still have to cut about 27 million dollars from their payroll to even be in the Lebron running.

I hope they pull it off though......but who ever doesnt get Lebron will be pushing for Bosh or Wade that same summer.

$4.5 is all it cost for a stake?  sheeeit, he might as well have broken off $20 or so and grabbed the whole franchise!  then again, he's a good businessman, so he knows what he's doing.  had to have been the best deal possible.

20mil would have still kept him as a minority partner. No one is going to give up a majority stake unless their selling the team.
If he had a majority portion he would have won the naming rights to the IZOD Center.

**Fortunately for Jay-Z its not considered tampering because he interacts with Lebron in a mainly musical(non sports) based manner.Theres never a direct basketball implication to the events and functions Lebron attends.Clubs, concerts its all falls under Jay-z's hiphop umbrella. The league would have stopped it if it was legit tampering and the fact that Lebron extended his Cavs contract while being close to Jay sealed the non tampering issue.

sorry nets  fans...sources have said that if the nets get a pretty decent pick in the draft, more than likely top ten, they will package that pick, richard jefferson, marcus williams and keith van horn's expiring contract to denver for carmelo anthony and marcus camby. and since carmelo's contract DOES NOT end before the 2010 season, that takes new jersey OUT of trying to steal LBJ from my city. cant pay 'melo AND lebron....sorry

They had an editorial about Jay and Lebron's relationship. They been cool since Lebron was in high school so the league has no say on that. I'm pretty sure that Lebron playing for the Nets has come up in their convos together, I'm not THAT naive, but we'll see what happens.

I don't care who wins it all this year, just as long as it ain't San Antonio! GAWD I hate that team!!! Like the Diesel said, "They're more like a WNBA team."
