Rapper/actor Mos Def will star in the upcoming movie Mama Black Widow, which is based on the 1969 novel of the same name by writer Robert “Iceberg Slim” Beck.

Mama Black Widow, which will also feature R&B songbird Rihanna in her big screen debut, tells the story of a black family’s migration from the Southern Mississippi field, to Chicago in the 1930’s.

The 1969 novel was a graphic tale about the character Otis Tilson, of a black homosexual "queen," growing up black, gay and poor in Chicago in 1946.

The movie, which is currently in pre-production, is being directed by Darren Grant and also stars singer Macy Gray, Brian J. White, Anthony Anderson, Kerry Washington and others.

Mama Black Widow is due in theaters in 2009.

Not the Iceberg Slim novel I thought would make it to the screen, but Im interested in how it unfolds.  Of all Iceberg's books, this was the one that had me like, WTF?!

Wondering if Mos will catch the lead role..... Otis Tilson wasn't just gay, dude was super-xtra w/ it.....

Mos Def is a very talented and educated brother. Did you catch him on The Bill Maher Show with Cornel West? He represented his ideas very well. He knew long ago that it had to be bigger than Hip Hop...gotta respect it! I'm looking forward to the film.

If you have time check out Living Proofe's music: www.myspace.com/proofe215. It's good music. Tks!

Ooooooh I can't waaaaaaait!!  I never sign on to this sh*t but I wanted to give my two-cent.  I absolutely loved the book and never thought it would be a movie but I'm glad it is.  It was sucha lovely book, and lovely story while also sad and tragic.  I want to see how the relationships he had with his mother and sisters translate.  Wow.  If you haven't read the book you certainly need to.  Yea there is a lot of homosexuality in it which people seem to be STUCK on, but this book was sooooo much more than that.  Can't wait for the movie.
