Lil Wayne's Tha Carter III Hits 1 Million Mark

By Chris Richburg

The third time looks to be the charm for Lil Wayne as the rapper’s latest album, Tha Carter III, hits the platinum mark with more than 1 million copies sold.

The album sold 1,005,545 copies, a number which will be made official when Nielsen SoundScan issues chart reports today (June 18).

According to Katina Bynum, VP of Marketing for Universal/Motown Records, Lil Wayne’s is reaping the benefits of a rigid work ethic, which included numerous mixtapes, cameos and touring.

"At a time when the music industry is experiencing decreased sales, Wayne proves that with hard work and excelling at his craft, he is a true phenom crossing all genre's of music,” Bynum told AllHipHop.com. “Wayne is the industry's new Rock Star!”

The album puts Lil Wayne in the company of fellow rapper 50 Cent in terms of first week sales.

The G-Unit leader was the last artist to sell just over 1 million units in a single week when his second album, The Massacre, reached the milestone in March 2005 with 1.1 million copies sold.

Since then, no other artist has managed to accomplish the task.

The closest entertainer to do so was Kanye West, whose Graduation album debuted with 957,000 copies sold in its first week of release last year, after arriving in stores on September 11.

Tha Carter III’s showing surpasses Lil Wayne’s previous album Tha Carter II, which moved 238,000 copies upon its 2004 release while entering the Billboard 200 chart at No. 2.

To all the Lil Wayne HATERS!!!! Game Ova.....Dude put in major work all these years and that should be respected. I mean Carter 1, Carter 2 (hip hop classics in my opinion)...Dedication 1 & 2 (Monsters in thier own right)...The Drought 1-3 (DUMB HOT)....Carter 3 is a solid, versatile album (shit will have to grow on most people that were expecting the previous work)...it may fall short of a classic, but its other albums out there now by well respected vets and newcomers that cant stand next to it. CONGRATS HOMEY!!

If your album leaks, you stand to have increased sales.  Bun B's album leaked, I downloaded it, and went and copped 2 more off GP; cause I know I'm gone wear the first one out.

It's nice to be able to preview somebody's album first; hence the need for mixtape DJ's.......as far as Lil Waste....I've heard his album, but didn't even waste the time to download it for free....much less buy the trash.

In today's creatively depressed world Album sales = DAMN GOOD MARKETING & PROMOTION!!!! I can't give Wayne No props no matter how many records he sell, How you gonna diss the Dee Jay It's the Dee Jay that started this shit, It's the Dee Jay that allowed these muthafuckas to eat!!! Ask Kool Herc Muthafuckas half yall muthafuckas don't even know what the 4 elements of Hip-Hop is or where it was started or who started it, but yall want to have discussions about my art form?! Get the fuck outta here. Wayne has no respect for Hip-Hop, This shit is just a hustle to him, to me this shit is my Life!

Congrats to Wayne but I'd like to see the statistics on this album.  Like a Male to Female ratio cuz i havent met a dude yet that like Lollipop here in the state of FL.  For me the 3 hottest tracks on there is Mr. Carter, Dr. Cater and the track with Robin thicke. A Milli was perhaps the 4th.  Regardless good work Wayne, ya marketing was great and your setup on the album with your collabos worked well.  Having Jay on there along with international star robin thicke should have people wanting to hear what you came up with them.  Not a classic but you def. stepped up ya game.  Now if you could Please put the drink down and stop kissing Baby.

And he still isnt the best rapper alive as the 38 year old Jay-Z proved to the world on Carter 3.  He was outshined by Jay easily and i think he is lucky he didnt get Eminem on there cause he would have had 2 tracks on his album where his guest would have outshined him and he would have had to add a follow up verse like he did with Jay to not look so bad.

So overall your boy gets love and hate from me cause i still think he has a lot of work to do to get to Best Rapper status.

The martian and his fans are just fools. I would be embarrassed to listen to the music lil' waste the martian makes. Wow, I feel sorry for those under spell.

Kids, please... We need more representation in government, science, math, health. I'd really like to know how productive the average lil' Wayne fan is this summer vacation. Really, list what you're doing this summer. In the past Hip-Hop was an awesome, positive influence, full of useful facts, reasonable fun, and human pride. Most of the stuff now sucks! Illmatic is the best album of all-time and the Carter III out sold it in its first week.  Third, once you start looking at the product you bought you will realize that it is NOT a classic and wayne is NOT a legendary artist.  I'm sick of his strained out voice, simile after simile that doesn't pertain to the subject, his week flow, lollipop being played a billion times everyday.  The only song i'll ever co-sign from wayne was la la la from about a year ago, he put his heart into that, and he represented N.O. after the hurricane.

Let the hating begin, but remember, i drop knowledge while you just clumsily spill...

if a dude sell 1 million or 100k doesnt mean he is the best or he is the worst or he is even good.. wayne is hot at the moment and these are the numbers he should be puttin up but lets not judge the Music by album sells.. album sells mean shit to whether the album is dope, lukewarm or wac..

as for carter 3 like i said b4 7/10 its a cool album but nothing real special.. all you grown ass ppl gettin supped up saying a album is classic or the best because of the numbers.. that is the dumbest thing i ever herd..

massacre.. 1.1 mill wac album
kingdom come 650 k jiggas best first week sell.. lukewarm, lyrics good beats not so good
graduation 950k dope good concept nice beats and lyrics..
the cool 150k one of the dopest albums of 2007

as u can see selling 1 - 1million doesnt make a classic album.. get that through ur heads

He definitly ain't and the album wasn't either. He freestyled the whole shit and I hope these other niggas don't start to go that rout because that would be bad for the game.

That aside, from one nigga to another, congradulations, I was WRONG about the sales...LOL! ( thought 400,000 was a good guess) good shit though. good shit.

2. why do people call you a "hater" when you say someone is garbage? and defend it with ''at least he makin his money". or " He movin alot of units, its good for hip hop"

what you mean "dont hate, at least he makin money"? Does that mean you're buying his albums solely to put money in his pocket? He is the artist, we are the customers, he charges for a service, we pay for the service.  If the service sucks, u dont pay for it and say ''well at least he's trying" especially for someone whos SUPPOSED to be the best.

being the consumer, we have the right to criticize the service. You are stupid to think that artists are to be ''respected'' just because they are working hard alone, you gain respect by DELIVERING.  As a business, you work hard but do not deliver, you wont survive.

Also, how is sellin a millie in one week a good look for hip hop?  If most of the people who bought the album were preppy white people, that means that in the future, to sell near that much or higher, you would need to aim ur songs at them and favor that type of croud lyrically.  Then how would hip hop music sound? how would BLACK music sound? So for you ignorant morons sayin this is good for hip hop have it completeley wrong.  You're just as bad as the white girls buying it who dont know shit about hip hop.

We ALL can agree that the carter II is WAYY better than the carter III right? Why is it that III sold more than II? exactly my point. its HYPE, he built hype from carter I,II and all the bullshit features and shit hes put on the radio up untill now.  Dont say stupid shit like ''He put in work all these years, he deserve it".... I could care less what he did in the past.  If he release nothin but classics, and then release some straight up garbage, im gon call it straight up garbage no matter what he has done, shame on him for using hype instead of DELIVERING

You have the BEST point!!!  Sales do not automatically equate to all the stuff that ppl are saying...skillz, talent, etc.  If that was the case, Vanilla Ice and Hammer would be the G.O.A.T.S. because "numbers dont lie" right?LOL

As far as the state of MAJOR labels.  You can NOT trust that, especially from UNIVERSAL.  It is widely known (for those with inside knowledge) that Universal is known to fudge sales here and there.  50 has even mentioned this about Kanye and Jay and although 50 gossips a lot, he does NOT lie.

That being said, I love the fact that Wayne is creative and ORIGINAL.  I agree with what someone said that Wayne respects the art.  Dude is very intelligent.

I like the album but there are a few weaknesses.  Dr. Carter is CRAZY!!!  Thats just a great song and concept.  I dont like how Wayne REALLY be rambling and all over the place in general...which ANYONE can do.  Anyone can just swagger through a track and not stay on topic JUST in order to rhyme.  But Dr. Carter really showed me something.

Had wayne threw a couple of those tracks away and added a few more, this would have been a CLASSIC!!!  But I will give it "modern day" classic, as in Classic for the last 4 years....not ALL-TIME Classic.

But he's NOT "rapping like Big, Jay, Tupac, and andre 3000" , lol.  That doesnt mean he cant get there though.  He still young.

Congrats Wayne!!!

Cant wait to see week #2 sales.

This is solely my OWN giving birth right of an OPINION. Not intended to offend anyone whom takes it the way they feel good or bad. I must say I downloaded the album and I bought it. For those who think that the album sucks. Then thats your OWN OPINION. Everyone does not see things the same way as others. Case in point the Carter III, I think its a Classic. As for the Time and State of Hip Hop right now. My OWN OPINION. And I really don't understand how Jay-Z outshined Weezy on Mr.Carter. I know some of you are about to say that Iam a hypocrite. And I know that thats other peoples OWN OPINION. But I just did'nt get that part. I got out the song something a little different. It was broken down into 4 parts. The 1st part his introduction, Letting you know that he's been hated on for all 4 seasons for some time now. And the haters/fans are asking about him and hes letting you know. Part 2. And he proceeds to let you know he has been in/out the bank. You know I guess Depositing,Transfering, or making Withdrawls. And alot of Haters/fans have been on the same shit, get it. So he flushes. If you don't you probably on the same Shit you've been on. And as alot of Haters/fans sleep on him regardless of anyone's OWN OPINION he's still gonna Stunt because that is him. That's who he is. And it is what it is. Part 3. Jay proceeds to let you know where he's been and his doings. And then he states his Sharings with the Younger Carter(Weezy),to go farther, further, and harder and if not why bother. And he has also changed from what once was of his up-bringings, so expand your growth. And he is also mentioned with the Greatness of the Past. Then he proceeds to Stunting(he still has it in him too) and he hands him the reigns to go and be of the such mentioned. Therefore Part 4. He's stating that he's going the total opposite of Soft. He's coming at you if you like it or not. If you are a Hater/fan. I think it was a well put together piece of work. And don't forget its my OWN OPINION. Let's try some Peace in our Society, we need it. Peace.

If music is supposed to be a PERSONAL preference, why do you have these people that get on here and make negative comments about people who like different music from them?

You all know who you are. I have seen every name in the book thrown at one time or another about people who like little Wayne's music. Wayne has damn near 15 years in the game, and you want us all to believe he does not have one song you like. And just because I do that makes me gay, an idiot, stupid, a rider, etc......

As young black people for the most part, we have the whole world against us, and then some. So with all the forces trying to trip us up in life, instead of using this music to bring us together and show unity. We have these thoughtless people that use that very tool to seperate us even more.

One question..........
WHY?

I don't think it's that he doesn't understand the verse...it's just that it's too simple. Most of his lines are REALLY easy to comprehend, which is unlike he used to be. I think he said that on that Misunderstood, can't remember if that's the right song, but I'm sure he said that people weren't understanding his written, so he stopped writing...he dumbed himself down...HARD. That makes sense though, if no one understands, it's hard for them to relate, so, he really just talks now...doesn't think too hard about what he's going to say...which is why you here 'like' a million times on a Wayne track. A good friend told me once, and it makes sense, "genius doesn't sell."

@xburnoutz:

Great knowledge from the Immortal Technique...I see you.

It's good to know that people are still supporting music though, the entire industry is steady falling and to be able to sell like that in this recession...that's a really hard feat to have accomplished. THAT'S great promotion, and hard work. He worked HARD for that!

The Weezy Stans are waiting for this...  I'm 17, i go to a predominantly white school, and i've never seen a more sought after commodity since they were all get those "Save Darfur" shirts.  Preppy Girls were talkin like "i waited until 12:01 to get his album."  So FIRST take into consideration who's buying the albums.  Second, don't over speculate the importance of album sales.

GET EM YOUNGIN! WOW! CO SIGN!
DON'T EVEN LET B-GAYNEWSTASH GET YOU ALL CRUNK. THAT DUDE WISHES HE COULD KISS WAYNE WHILE BABY

get off my dicc and learn to be a dad bitch nigga.only fires u fight r u ones in ur pants cuz u deal with bitches with the germs nigga.wrap it up next time.pussy ass nigga.i know ur kids got the C3 bumpin in their rooms nigga.Wayne raising ur kids for u.teaching them how to stunt.haha.
