The music business has always been about money. The only real difference is that now we have Hip Hop multi-millionaires. When you look at those numbers, imagine what the parent labels and media conglomerates are making off of them. They are still small time in comparison to the conglomerates that have exploited black music for centuries.

Preservation of the art form is up to the artists and the fans. There are plenty of real Hip Hop artists out there, purists, doing their thing but the fans are not seeking out new talent they are waiting for the mainstream to promote and publicize them.

As consumers of the art you play a big role in the continuation of Hip Hop as an art as well. At the same time, I recommend that all artists learn the music business first and foremost. OWN your masters, OWN at least 50% of your publishing, and start operating as a BUSINESS because musicians are considered to be sole proprietors as far as the IRS is concerned so act like a BUSINESS.

Cosign.  I started seriously rappin' back in like 92'.  I started making tracks in like 98/99.  I'm more of a laid back, in the background dude, so producing fit my persona better than rappin'.  Also, like you said there is more money in the "background jobs" like producing versus the artists who really do all the grunt work and get pimped in the process ( general statement ).  The real ballers are the ones paying these guys. Nowadays, it feel like you have to sell your soul to rap in the big leagues.  That's another reason why I never pursued rap further than a hobby.  If all I wanted to do was make money, there are a hella lot more jobs that bring in more paper than this rap shit.

Maybe, maybe not.....the difference is that these lists are built on REPORTED earnings.Most show earnings don't get reported,outside of major shows/tours, those local club performances/appearances escape the IRS. which is why it pays to have a good manager/accountant if ya math skills are suspect.

publishing is where most dough is at and owning your onw label.

the way it works,

when rappers sign a deal with a record label they are signing up for promotion and distribution of their music. the music label takes like 75% for their royalities aswell as owning all their publishing in return for promotion and distribution. even if that artist leaves the label the label still owns all the recordings created by that artist and gets royalties from all future airplay, samples and sales.

hence artists that own their own label/publishing make the biggest CA$$$$$$$$hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wish I could make that much money, but I think I would change bigtime as a person. I'm the cable/phone man, and I love the money I make even though Id like more. It's good to be rich and all but I don't think I could live a simple stress free life like I do now. It is good to see someone from the projects make a legit 150 mil. I can't hate on that.
