Notorious a Success With $21.5 Million Opening Weekend

By Ismael AbduSalaam

Reports of violence weren't enough to keep moviegoers away this past weekend from seeing Notorious, the much anticipated biopic of slain Hip-Hop icon The Notorious B.I.G.

Released figures have confirmed the project grossed $21.5 million in its opening weekend.

This amount placed the film at number four behind My Bloody Valentine 3-D ($21.9 million), Gran Torino ($22.2 million), and Mall Cop ($33.8 million).

However, Notorious with its limited theater release of 1,638 still boasted the best per screen average at $13,126.

Mall Cop, this week's #1 movie, generated a screen average of $10,751 in 3,144 theaters.

Notorious' debut makes it the most successful opening weekend for Fox Searchlight, beating out the company's previously critically acclaimed projects such as Juno and Little Miss Sunshine.

"It's a very high quality film, and it's compelling look at a compelling cultural icon who, like many cultural icons, left way too early but left an indelible mark on society," explained Chris Aronson, senior vice president at 20th Century Fox to the Associated Press. "The estimated three-day gross for Notorious showed it was more popular than expected beyond African-American audiences. We crossed over, which speaks volumes about his impact as a cultural icon."

At press time figures are being recounted between Notorious and My Bloody Valentine 3-D, which may result in the former rising to the number 3 position.

I think the movie was good but a few things urked me like no mentioning wutang an nas seeing they were his direct comp in ny. Not showing mase, lox or jay. And not getting deeper into why lil kim loved him so much considering how he treated her and why he loved faith more than everyone else, in the film it made his love for her look superficial. Other than those little beefs i enjoyed the movie and im glad his mother is gonna get alittle closure from the movie.

Good stuff! Despite everyone trying to make it seem like violence is surrounding this film its shows that there is an audience out here for this type of movie. I feel like we need more hip hop movies that reflect our culture just like we saw movies like La Bamba, Selena, Ray, etc. Hip hop is significant because there isnt one type of person that listens to it. Rap music and rap vernacular  sneaks into every aspect of our socirty and its time for people to recognize!

How Juvie and them was actually broke and Birdman and Wayne was ballin foreal, that'll be funny as hell

Its like Chris Rock said, black people are the most racist people on Earth for real lol We have a black man bout to be president yet people are shocked that white people went to see a movie about Biggie.

As far as the movie goes, it was good but not great only because it didn't tell me anything I didn't already know. I wanted to learn more about the Biggie/Faith/Lil Kim love triangle if anything, but at the end of the day the movie was more about HIM than anything.

@ precise
I was kinda mad they left out certain people as well, but you gotta remember it's only so much they can fit into a  2 hour movie or so.

Glad that it made some noise, hopefully it will finish around the $60 million mark. The DVD sales will be much better when they release it.

As for the movie, I enjoyed it but like many others there were scenes I wish were in there.

Biggie & Jay-Z in the booth recording "Brooklyn's Finest"

The video shoot of "One More Chance" or at least "Big Papa"

Biggie going into business with Un Rivera and the devolpement of Junior Mafia which later brought in Cam', Charlie Baltimore and "The Commision"

Biggie saying "Brooklyn We Did It" at I believe the Source Award, or maybe the American Music awards I forgot.

But if they would have done that the movie would have been 4 hours.

My favorite scene was when Biggie was in Sacramento and he said "Fuck it" and did "Who Shot Ya". The look on Puff's face lol.

I respect that, a man can only take so much.

I mean it aint too much they could go by to get in-depth with the love triangle, especially when Kim wouldn't give input........

I'm sure Faith had enough heart to not be biased with the portrayl of it all, and shit Charlie B-More wasn't even depicted.

as far as teh NYC internal beefs, Nas and Biggie was cool and it was nothin more than friendly competition on a silent level. And lets put it like this, after the Purple Tape interlude, Biggie worked wit RZA to do the "Long Kiss Goodnight/Goodbye" and some of the Wu Members were at the actual session. if anything the more serious beef he had would be with the Boot Camp Click (which actually became non-fatal physical conflicts) outside of the whole East/West thing.

I'ma need ya'll to stop letting these media folks deceive ya'll...

BIG's movie is really the #1 movie...they just didn't release it nationwide to 3,000+ theatres like they should have.  If they had, he would have easily grossed 35-40 million, which would  make it #1.

Still have no clue as to why they didn't (guess they were being cautious), but don't trip.  BIG's movie was numero Uno, if you project it out.  There's no way you almost double the number of theatres it would have been in and not get at least 13-14 Million.

Yeah, you did it right BIG...

Congrats to all those involved in the movie...

Oh, and I agree...

They didn't make any mention of that nigga Jay (shows you how close they REALLY were...or weren't:), Wu, Nas, etc...

Maybe Ms. Wallace has a problem with them...who knows..

Good movie tho...

Still wish Angela Bassett woulda had more of an accent...that kinda messed it up for me...but they did the movie justice..

Especially the Faith and Kim characters.  They, along with BIG, did they thing...

Felt like they made Lil Cease look like a dayum clown tho!  lol...

Well if you think about it its alot they didn't mention. They didn't even mention much about Junior Mafia really. Mary J wasn't nowhere to be seen neither and they only briefly showed Craig Mack in one scene.

They kinda gave a subliminal shout out to Jay twice though: they played "I Love the Dough" at one point and they had Lil Kim in the studio doin "Big Momma Thang," a song that Jay was on.

I thought they should've at least touched on the beefs he had wit Chef and Ghost though. He had beef wit Boot Camp Click and Jeru the Damaja but most people never even heard of them so why mention it...?

Its a few things that happened that I do question though: was Lil Kim's verse in Get Money really about him like they made it seem? And I doubt that Big really tried to repair all those burnt bridges like they implied right before he got shot. I think they just did that to make it seem like he was a nice guy or something. That's the type of stuff you do on your deathbed and he didn't know he was about to get shot so those phone calls seem kinda suspect to me.

All in all still a good flick though!

saw it last night.. i was really impressed.. dude playin pac was kinda lame, didnt sound like him at all.. and i didnt like how big's mom didnt have the jamaican accent.. other than that, the casting was pretty good.. and i was also kinda disappointed they didnt have any mention of easy mo bee, jay, mase, the lox, charli baltimore, and the 'beef' with wu-tang.. but when u think about it, a lot of that stuff they couldnt put it in there.. it woulda made the movie too damn long and it really wouldnt have added much to the story..
for the heavy role easy mo bee played in ready to die, they coulda had him in the movie.. but to go to the bother of casting a jay or a mase or any of the lox just to show them hanging out and maybe doin a track together, it wouldnt have added anything to the story really, and it just woulda made people watchin it who dont know about hip-hop confused, like, who the fuck is this jadakiss guy and why is he in the movie?.. and the purple tape thing, although they could have weaved that in as just another one of the pressures big was facin around the time when pac started throwin shots, the 'beef' with the wu never really went anywheres to contribute to the story.. and it woulda took away from the whole polarity of the east/west thing and confused viewers who didnt already know about it.. the charli baltimore thing they maybe couda worked in there i guess.. but the movie really was centered just on big.. even junior mafia played a very minimal role in the movie..

anyways, if you're not a fan or you're unfamiliar with big, i dont know how much u can take from the movie or how much u will enjoy it. you wont think it sucked, but u def wont appreciate it as much. but guaranteed, if you're a fan of big, even if u already know all the stories about him, you're gonna really enjoy this movie. and i cant even front, the funeral scene at the end, i was gettin choked up, which never happens to me from movies. the movie is very well done, go see it.

Im also happy that they didnt beat around the bush throughout the film. They showed Biggie when he was being a good guy and when he was also making bad decisions. I respect the movie for its honesty and its portrayal of one of the biggest icons in the hip hop culture.

I urge people to look pass all of the faults that they have conjured, and take a moment to be thankful that people respect this art form enough to base an entire motion picture around one of the greatest.

Hello Good People of AHH:  I saw this film and I have to say I was not impressed.  First off Pac was the worst actor I ever scene, will the guy who played him, Faith was too white.  The girl who played Lil Shim, should get an Oscar, but they don't give Oscars for this shit, if they did, she should get one.  She was the best thing in the film.

Basset was not worked enough.  She played a bland predictable role.  The Puffy Character should have been played by P Diddy, she didn't not age that much they she could not play her own role.  That bitch used Proactive and sperm on her face, so she was good to go.

Derek Luke was okay, but he always looked like he was about to shit on himself.  The set designers were over paid, because they had nothing to look at, no cars, no private jets, no yachts, no clothing, nothing exciting.

The DP sucked.  (The Director of Photography ) He didn't do anything creative.  They should have gotten Scorscess DP.  This clown, on Biggie, didn't do anything.

The script was shit bag and Biggie was using terms he would not use at that time period.  All and all, it looked like an ABC after school special.  It was not meant for the big screen.

And if you didn't know biggie, they made him look like a

1. Pig
2. Drug Dealer
3. Woman Hater
4. All Around Bitch.

The did nothing for his legacy but made him look like a scum bag.  I think P Shitty made this, it should have been "The P Diddy Story"

They did not shoe the beef between East and West and that is the best part of the drama, how the fuck did they leave that out.  Here is what Frosty Gives it.

1. Acting       (one Snow Flake out of four)
2. DP            (one Snow Flake out of four)
3. Location    (no snow flakes; low budget)
4. Bling         (no snow flakes; no budget)
5. Script       (one Snow Flake out of four)
6. Direction   (two snow Flakes, but they should have gotten Oliver Stone, trust me on that, he  wrote Scarface and directed, JFK and The Doors, nuff said)
7. Music      (ZERO, THEY FUCKED UP BAD) The sound track and score was yellow snow and you know what that means, piss.

All and all, I give it ONE SNOW FLAKE for effort.  Notorious falls short in every area, should wait for the DVD, bad film.  Not theater worthy.  This is not worth the risk of possible violence like in NC.  I would not waste my money or time.
