Daily Word: Never Stay Defeated!!

Happy Tuesday, my soldiers and survivors!

Welcome to the day that makes yesterday a thing of the past!! Today’s Daily Word is dedicated
to never staying defeated! I have no idea who Murphy is, but apparently he has a law that says if anything can go wrong it will… While this was the case for me yesterday – the fact that I am up writing about how bad my day was signifies that it wasn’t!

In life, you will be dealt with many obstacles or situations that may seem like the end of the
world, but if you live to tell the story, it means that you have another opportunity to make it better! No matter how beat down or defeated you may feel at times, never ever give up! Whatever you may be going through will pass!

Believe in the power of now and your power to change your circumstance!! The only thing that can stop you is death!! As long as you have breath in your body, you will have opportunity! Take advantage of this opportunity and create your light! Remember: The darkest hour is just before the dawn!
-Ash’Cash

“Even when defeat appears certain, victory is well within reach. Even when the night is at its darkest, dawn is already on the way.” -Ralph Marston

Frank Ocean: The Rosa Parks Of The Gay Hip-Hop Movement

From here on, Caushun will forever be known as the Claudette Colvin of Hip-Hop. Caushun was unabashedly out when he was thrust upon the Hip-Hop community as one of the first rappers to be presented as openly gay and embraced by the powers that be. He was also covered heavily in the media as one that would have waved the rainbow flag inside the otherwise open doors on the House of Hip-Hop.

As the story was told in the mid-2000s, he was signed to Baby Phat Records and touted through of the music elite’s insider parties. Russell and Kimora Lee Simmons took the fabulously flamboyant Caushun under their mighty marital wing and introduced him to the world.

Jason Herndon, Caushun by his real name, has to be somewhere in the deep recesses of obscurity, stewing. P#####. Crushed even.

Frank Ocean stole his moment.

Frank Ocean, when history is told and re-told, will be regarded as the Rosa Parks of the Gay Hip-Hop movement. Mark these words. If you have a chisel handy, etch them in stone.

He’s not a rapper, some are going to argue. Was Nate Dogg a rapper? What about TJ Swann of the Juice Crew? We all love Mary J. Blige. They and others like them are unquestionably Hip-Hop. Caushun was a rapper, but there was nothing truly Hip-Hop about him. Frank, albeit a singer, is undoubtedly a part of the Hip-Hop community, because of the manner in which his music resonates and his affiliations.

Rosa Parks, who was down with the NAACP, was heralded as a heroine of the Civil Rights Movement for her unwillingness to give up her bus seat to a White man as she rested on her weary feet on that fate-filled day in a 1955 Alabama. But her move was a well-timed act as well, as it was a supremely strategic move. Enter Claudette Colvin.

Before Rosa Parks, there was Claudette Colvin. Colvin was a 15-year-old G from what I’ve gathered. She was a young, scrappy, and militant kid when she refused to give up her seat to a White person, a full nine months before her elder counterpart, Parks. Colvin was studying the injustices that were going on in 1955, analyzing the life of Black leaders and was ready for whatever was to come.

[READ: 2011: The Gayest Year In Hip-Hop History]

In her 2009 book, Claudette Colvin: Twice Toward Justice, she explained why Parks was selected. To NPR, she said, “Her skin texture was the kind that people associate with the middle class. She fit that profile.” Parks was also the secretary for the NAACP and had the backing of the local chapter to start the boycott that would cripple the racist busing system.

So, Frank Ocean is the Gay Hip-Hop Movement’s Rosa Parks, whether dissonant voices admit it or not. Rosa Parks wasn’t the first to get arrested for not giving up her seat. But, she was the first, some say, to fit an ideal that matched the delicate needs of the Dr. Martin Luther King-led push for equal rights. And, like Parks, Ocean is relatively safe, whereas Colvin was a militant that eventually relocated to Harlem in the midst of a cultural revolution living among the likes of Malcolm X.

Caushun was presented as an effeminate gay stereotype, a sort of person that’s overtly flamboyant and ultra outrageous to the commoner. Caushun and several other Gay Hip-Hop heads pre-dated the Odd Future affiliate’s announcement that his first love was with another teen boy. But those H### Hip-Hop heads were not the ONE. Frankie Baby is. Frank Ocean rose quickly through the ranks digging his roots deep, but revealing his sexuality at the right time in the right climate.

The door is opening and Frank Ocean – whether he’s Gay, Bisexual, or Something Else – helped open it. It doesn’t really matter. He’s already worked with Kanye West, Justin Bieber, Brandy, Beyonce, and Jay-Z. And now, 50 Cent wants to work with Ocean post-Gay announcement, and Fif hasn’t historically been all that progressive. In fact, just a couple of mixtapes ago, he waged war against soft rap and “smedium” clothing, and now, he still wants to work with the leader of this new school. Like Obama, that’s a shift in position. There has been little to no backlash from the Hip-Hop community, whose homophobia is the stuff legends are made of.

But times have changed quite considerably. Attitudes have changed, but a lot of folks just aren’t choosing to fight that fight.

On top of it all, Frank (and his team) mastered this moment.

[READ: Can Hip-Hop’s New Generation Master The Moment?]

Frank Ocean played it perfectly, and there will always be some level of speculation on the timing of the revelation that his first love was a boy. Frank made his gi-normous reveal about his sexuality a week before his album dropped – a sharp contrast from CNN reporter Anderson Cooper, who could have easily capitalized by announcing he was gay during sweeps. He middle-fingered everything and even made the “announcement” through an email to a friend. Whatever.

This is the business of Hip-Hop and impact is about timing and relevance.

Frank Ocean is inexplicably a part of an untold underbelly of African American history – gay people were in Hip-Hop from the very beginning. (Gasp!) If you don’t know, you don’t know. If you know, you’re probably not saying a lot.

Frank Ocean threw caution to the wind and said what he had to say, in song, letter, and deed.

And his timing couldn’t have been better. Just like Rosa Parks.

[Editor’s note: When it was all said and done Caushun turned out to be a joke. He even had a ghost writer. Oddly enough, by today’s Hip-Hop standards, he would have still had a shot at stardom. Claudette Colvin was no joke. Read up on her.]

Many thanks to my muse for this piece. I appreciate your inspiration.

Ice-T Takes “The Art of Rap” to London for Premiere

(AllHipHop News) Ice-T’s directorial debut “Something From Nothing: The Art Of Rap” premiered in London last week.

The legendary, Los Angeles bred artist promoted the documentary at key locations around the UK’s capital city, including Hammersmith Apollo, Brixton Ritzy Picture House, British Film Institute and an Apple Store in Central London.

Ice-T also hosted Q&A sessions with audiences at each screening event, which were completely sold out.

Ice-T commenced his tour at West London’s Hammersmith Apollo where he was joined by rap legends Chuck D, Melle Mel, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah and UK rap group Hijack for a one-off performance.

During the Q&A, fans asked Ice-T a range of questions, including his views on UK Hip-Hop, how he obtained funding for the project and why there were only a few female rappers featured in the documentary.

“I asked [rappers] what they would do if they taught a rapper,” Ice-T said when London audiences asked about some common responses rappers gave during filming.”They all said originality. Kool Keith said it the best. Look and see what everyone else is doing, and don’t do that. Look and see how everyone else is dressing, and don’t dress like that. That’s originality.”

Ice-T also confirmed he is pleasantly surprised by the reception the documentary is receiving

“The most unexpected thing is the reception this movie has got from people. In a world of haters, you can see on the Internet, this movie has not received one single bad review. That’s impossible,” Ice-T explained

Ice-T continued to say, “This project is like a rubik cube. To diss the movie, you have to diss everyone in it. And nobody is qualified to do that.”

“Something from Nothing: The Art of Rap” was released on July 20 in the United Kingdom.

CONCERT REVIEW: BoB Rocks Out At His Quickie MySpace Secret Show In NYC

If you got there late, got stuck at the bar, or stood shimmying in a restroom line for too long, you missed BoB’s electric performance at Highline Ballroom in New York City on Sunday night.

If you were a witness who did none of those things, you were treated to a great 55-minute concert from Atlanta’s stratospheric-star, BoB.

The show, part of the national MySpace sponsored “Secret Shows” series, was jam-packed with 1,000-plus free ticketholders, lights, dancers, background singers, a live band, a constantly-morphing set, and a flowing set of hit after hit from BoB’s acclaimed catalog.

It was just enough time for the audience to fully appreciate how different BoB truly is among his peers in the rap landscape. He plays piano and guitar (“I’m the only rapper to play guitar and piano and have Gold and Platinum records,” he reminded during the show), he sings, he has collabos with country megastars like Taylor Swift. And he does it without apology to the tune of multiple Grammy nominations and other awards.

In under an hour, BoB ran through songs like “Melody” (with him on piano), “Never Let Go” (with him on guitar), the album title track/herbal anthem “Strange Clouds” (with him by audience-supplied cell phone lights), “So Good” (with the necessary “Na-na-na’s” belted out on background) and “Airplanes” (with Paramore’s Hayley Williams – not there – but on the accompaniment track).

“Rap it up” were BoB’s last words before exiting the stage. He was referring to wearing condoms, and Highline even completed his sex ed PSA by giving out sample 3-packs of Trojans “Charged” brand to the audience as they filed out.

It was a good lesson in safe sex, and an even better lesson in good music.

On The Scene At 16: Lil Wayne, LL Cool J and Soulja Boy Broke The Rules And Redefined The Game

Editor’s Note: Hip-Hop has been referred to as a sport for the young. Even a rap legend or two will tell you that Hip-Hop – the music and the culture – are rooted in the trends, slang, and follies of street-oriented youth.

Make no mistake. “Generation Next’s” influence can be seen all over rap music. From A$AP Rocky to Chief Keef to Pac D## in Cali, the 18 to 30 crowd (and sometimes younger) is driving Hip-Hop and Pop culture today. But what’s old is new, and rappers are great at every age. All this week, AllHipHop.com ponders the “Age Effect” on Hip-Hop, both then and now.

Age is nothing but a number, and the saying has been proven true time and time again over the years with some of the biggest success stories in music and entertainment coming onto the scene at an unusually young age. Currently, it is becoming even more common with the likes of such artists as Earl Sweatshirt, Justin Bieber, Amiracle, Chief Keef, and Diggy Simmons, just to name a few, all building brands and fanbases, and releasing music that is heard by millions of people around the world on a consistent basis.

Although they may be the faces of today, they are just a few names in the frequently-expanding category of artists who burst onto the scene as a teenager. Artists like Lil Wayne, LL Cool J and Soulja Boy are three of the most well-known names in music today – and all three got their official starts around the tender ages of 16 and 17.

As part of our focus on Rappers Through The Ages, we have decided to highlight the accolades that these three titans have amassed over the years – both acknowledging and celebrating the fact that they are all working just as hard, if not harder now, than they were as teenagers:

Lil Wayne

  • First Album: Tha Block Is Hot (1999)

It’s hard to believe that one of the biggest names in music today came on to the scene when he was just nine years old, as one of Cash Money Records first signees. Almost 21 years after signing on the dotted line of his first recording contract, Dwayne “Lil Wayne” Carter, has built a music empire of his own under the guidance and mentoring of his own father figures in Cash Money founders, Bryan “Birdman” Williams and Ronald “Slim” Williams.

To date, Weezy, who is now 29, has sold over 10 million albums worldwide, won seven BMI Awards, two ASCAP Awards,  three Grammys, and been nominated for almost 50 BET Hip-Hop Awards. As he continues to work on his tenth album, I Am Not A Human Being, which is set for release later this year, Wayne has continued getting his mogul on and helping further propel the longevity of multi-platinum artists in his own camp like Drake and Nicki Minaj while simultaneously building budding careers for the rest of his Young Money roster, based on the trials and tribulations he’s experienced throughout his own life.

At 16, Lil Wayne was the quintessential New Orleans boy, but already showing signs of eccentric greatness to come.

LL Cool J

  • First Album: Radio (1985)

After 27 years in the game, LL Cool J is still going strong, and as one of the first faces of Hip-Hop and the Def Jam brand at age 16, LL will forever be one of the staples of both the music and the culture. Having released 12 albums since 1985, and with his 13th currently in the works and on the way, James Todd Smith has had a career quite unlike anyone else within the music industry, possibly even in all of entertainment.

The nine-time Grammy Award-nominee has won four NAACP Image Awards, 10 Soul Train Awards, starred in nearly 25 movies, over 10 television shows, and most recently was named the recipient of BET’s “I Am Hip-Hop” Award in 2011 for his endless contributions to Hip-Hop culture.

At 16, LL Cool J rapped with the ferocity of a lion, and the “Ladies Loved Cool J” right from the start, too.

Soulja Boy

  • First Album: Souljaboytellem.com (2007)

Two years after releasing “Crank That” on the world via YouTube, DeAndre “Soulja Boy” Way landed at #18 on Forbes list of Hip-Hop Cash Kings for pulling in over $7 million. As further clarification, that wasn’t a list of “cash kings” under 25, that was a list of overall rappers and Hip-Hop entrepreneurs that he found himself on, after amassing one of the biggest hits of the digital age at the age of 16.

Despite some faltering album sales following his initial release, Soulja Boy paved the way for young artists who are now building up their work ethic and utilizing the tools at their fingertips to create a career and long-standing fortune. Soulja’s fourth album, Promiseis on deck for release later this year, as is a rumored collaborative project with one of Hip-Hop’s other wealthiest business minds, 50 Cent.

At 16, the Atlanta teen was perhaps the Steve Jobs of Rap-Based Social Media. Soulja Boy, tell ’em.

Stay tuned throughout the week for more on rappers through the ages!

G.O.O.D. Music Delays Compilation Until September; Cyhi the Prynce Tweets About Complex Cover Snub

(AllHipHop News) Today G.O.O.D. Music announced by press release that their compilation project would be releasing on September 4, instead of the previously set date of August 7.

While no details were disclosed about why the project was delayed, in lieu of the new date, Kanye West and team released the West-produced track, “New God Flow.”

The song features both Pusha T and Kanye rapping on track, and follows up “Mercy,” the number one song in Urban radio for the fourth consecutive week, selling over 1.2 million copies thus far.

Both “Mercy,” and “New God Flow” are featured on the G.O.O.D. Music / Def Jam Recordings compilation, and “Mercy” marks Kanye’s ninth #1 single at the Urban format adding to the recent “Otis” and “Paris” from the Watch The Throne project.

In addition to the press release, the G.O.O.D. Music family also blessed the cover of Complex Magazine – less Cyhi da Prynce – who later retweeted a fan’s question about why he didn’t make the cover to the magazine.

“G.O.O.D. Music: New Religion (Cover Story) http://www.complex.com/music/2012/07/good-music-cover-story … @ComplexMag I wonder why @CyHiThePrynce is not on the cover? #CruelSummer,” Cyhi the Prynce re-Tweeted.

“I just got a phone call from Andre 3000 watch this for all you hating ass ni**as!!!” Cyhi said. Moments later Cyhi commented via Twitter stating, “Remember this is not a sprint it’s a marathon.”

In the past few days, Cyhi the Prince has been seen retweeting fan’s support for his most recent project, Ivy League, particularly the soul sample-heavy song, “Changed”, where he describes his passion for making music and all the struggles that come along with the business of music.

Wordspit: You Repped Hip-Hop Well On “America’s Got Talent”

I’ve known the rapper Wordspit for a few years now. I’m not sure exactly how that came to be. All I know is I’ve always admired his skilled. Nowadays, I have an equal admiration for his talent, tenacity and adaptability. One day, I was randomly watching “America’s Got Talent.” I can’t fathom why. Up until that point, I had never watched the show (and only watched after when reminded). Lo and behold, I saw a familiar face. It was Wordspit rapping with a band (The Illest) in front of judges Howard Stern, Sharon Osbourne, Howie Mandel and a sizable audience. Wow. I remember him from much smaller platforms in Brooklyn or some other place in New York with a penchant for penmanship. He killed it on that day on “America’s Got Talent” and continued to do so for weeks.

Unfortunately, it came to an end recentlyy and the same judges that praised Wordspit and The Illest ended up voting the crew off the stage. But, still, I’ve got no choice but to salute the crew. Check out their last performance and see…they don’t leave quietly.

VIDEO: “Man of Steel” Taking A Page Out Of Christopher Nolan’s Book With New Superman Film

With inevitable plans to re-launch Batman in a new franchise over the next several years, following the critically acclaimed and fan-adored three films from Christopher Nolan’s own Dark Knight trilogy, Warner Bros. has begun plotting its future moves with the other DC properties they desire to get on big screens – sooner rather than later.

It is known that Warner Bros., is beginning to plant seeds, the first of which may be in 2013’s Man of Steel, for their own future superhero team-up movie Justice League, which includes the characters of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, and more, following the immense success of Marvel’s The Avenger earlier this summer.

Snyder, who directed 300, Watchmen, Dawn of the Dead and Sucker Punch certainly has the visual flair to pull off a spectacle like Man of Steel, but with the godfather himself, Christopher Nolan, producing this new interpretation of Superman, fans are sure to get something they never expected. Check out the film’s first teaser below to get an idea of what exactly may be in store when next summer rolls around:

Henry Cavill plays Superman in director Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel.” The film also stars Amy Adams as Daily Planet journalist Lois Lane, and Laurence Fishburne as her editor-in-chief, Perry White. Starring as Clark Kent’s adoptive parents, Martha and Jonathan Kent, are Diane Lane and Kevin Costner.

Squaring off against the superhero are two other surviving Kryptonians, the villainous General Zod, played by Michael Shannon, and Faora, Zod’s evil partner, played by Antje Traue. Also from Superman’s native Krypton are Lara Lor-Van, Superman’s mother, played by Ayelet Zurer, and Superman’s father, Jor-El, portrayed by Russell Crowe. Rounding out the cast are Harry Lennix as U.S. military man, General Swanwick, as well as Christopher Meloni as Colonel Hardy.

Man of Steel hits theaters on June 14, 2013

Hip-Hop Rumors: Did Chris Brown Crash Rihanna’s Vacation?

If you follow Rihanna on Instagram, you can see that she is having an amazing time on vacation with a gang of her girlfriends, including her omni-present BFF Melissa Forde and her publicist Jenn Rosales. Rihanna and her girls are doing it big, sailing on a 55-meter yacht in the Mediterarian Sea. After doing a little bit of Island hopping, Ri Ri pulled ashore in St.Tropaz.

Last night, Chris Brown Instagram’ed that he was on his way to France, and upon landing he was snapped by a fan with his on again/off again girlfriend, Karreuche Tran.

Breezy then instagram’ed that he was on a helicopter being piloted by rapper Ludacris. It gets even weirder when he says he is on his way to a yacht.

Brown tweets a photo of the top of the yatch, along with the message “Landed on the boat!” Almost simultaneously, Rihanna tweeted, “‘Touch down baby, help me pick out my fit.”

Is all of this a coincidence? I wouldn’t be surprised if Chris Brown was a guest on her yacht, along with Ludacris. Rihanna played host to basketball legend Magic Johnson recently, but would Chris Brown visit her with Karrueche in tow?

This is like an episode of the Twilight Zone. Chris Brown once tweeted, “this would make a good a** movie,” in the midst of his Twitter war with Meek Mill and Drake – I think he is right.

Can you imagine if Rihanna wrote a book? I’m sure she’s taking notes for her memoir in the future – that girl must have stories for days.

According to NecoleBitchie, there was a casting notice that went out in France for a music video. Rumor has it that Breezy is in town to shoot the video with Swizzy and Luda. Swizz Beatz all but confirmed that rumor with the following instagram below:

Oh yeah, Chris Brown liked a photo of Rihanna on Instagram. Do you think that’s a big deal? At the very least, it shows that they follow each other. I can’t blame him for liking the pic, though – check it out below:

Freeway Ricky Ross Response To Rick Ross: Funk Flex Interview With Open Letter

Freeway Ricky Ross continues his battle against rapper Rick Ross, in regards to usage of the name “Rick Ross.” The pair have been at odd’s since Rick Ross released his debut album, Port of Miami, in 2006.

The issue has gone through the legal system, with the rap star coming out the victor on two separate occasions. But Freeway Ricky received a lifeline in the case last week, when a judge ruled that he could pursue a lawsuit against Warner Music, the label that released the album.

Rapper Rick Ross, born William Leonard Roberts II, hosted an interview with Funkmaster Flex last week, where he replied to a number of allegations surrounding the legal beef. This is Freeway Ricky’s full response, in the battle over his own name.

This is Freeway Rick Ross, I’m writing this to reply to William “Rozay” Robert’s interview with Funkmaster Flex addressing my lawsuit. In the streets a name is everything, in Hip Hop it is a career maker.  William claims that we are both street dudes and could’ve talked; he and his music label had that chance and thought they could ignore me because I had a life sentence. In prison when you have a federal life sentence you’re considered the walking dead, it is exactly for this reason that they dodged me when I sent multiple requests from prison to sit down about the use of my name and image. When I finally chased William down through my guys on the street, we talked via phone, he gave me a number, and said he would come down to the prison to “chop it up”. He never came, then changed the phone number.

On the street when you take someone’s name and image the first step is to properly approach them, then you can be the lil homie, if they accept. But because he thought I was the walking dead he just stole my name and image. I’m a street dude from LA, it’s documented. William is not a street dude. He is a guy from a good background that had to pass background tests to become an Officer. There’s nothing wrong with being an Officer, just don’t use my name if you were one to gain traction in rap, especially without asking me. I didn’t get treated well by police, they planted drugs and physically beat me, so to have an officer use my name to get into rap is disrespectful.

William said to Big Boy on Power 106 it’s something “sinister” about it regarding being a CO, there ain’t nothing sinister about a CO. It’s a stand up job for a straight guy. I told Gary Webb in interviews for Dark Alliance “Everyday I hustled” then the guy came out with his single “Hustlin.” Well before music labels profiteered on my name and image “RICK ROSS” it had reached everywhere from Time Magazine, CSPAN Congressional Hearings and Newspapers globally, causing global awareness of my image as “RICK ROSS.”  I believe the guy studied me, watched TV, read all the press, talked to people that were around me then tricked people when they searched the internet and thought he was me. I had a Louis Vuitton room in my hotel at the Freeway Inn, everybody knew that who were “street dudes.”  I turn around and all this guy talks about is Louis Vuitton. In the new “Three Kings” song with Dr. Dre & Jay Z he talks about Crips, the guy knew about me and Crips by his own admission, that’s who I was associated with because of where I grew up. Also everybody knew I took care of my guys like equals, and was known as the Boss. This guy walks around with my whole image, he has mimicked all of my persona as Rick Ross.

Check out the KDAY LA interview where William explains how he got the name Rick Ross. Under oath he claimed he came up with the name playing football as an All American out the air in 1996. In 1996 I was everywhere on every news channel, newspaper and Gary Webb even did a book “Dark Alliance” on me and the cocaine epidemic. There’s no way someone in love with gang lore like William graduating HS in 96 came up with my name out of thin air. Somewhere between all the lyrics of my image as RICK ROSS moving bricks of cocaine, causing violence/mayhem and being a boss kingpin lost is how my image and right to rehabilitate it has been stolen and licensed. Then I contact Carol City HS just to see if he was All American, and they have no record of a William Roberts playing football in the 90’s. C’mon Man!!!

To have a man tattoo my name on his hands, and then not acknowledge why he did it is a disrespect to me, all my cell mates in for unfairly long crack sentences and the black community that was affected by the cocaine epidemic and Iran Contra Scandal. To have music labels profiteer by pushing the image of the dangerous black criminal is irresponsible. My recent article on Loop 21 and Toure’ article on the Washington Post are a must read to understand. Also you can see the Emmy nominated VH1 Documentary Planet Rock “History of Crack and Hip Hop” to see why my name made William Robert’s career. Telling young people with no hope because of poverty that you can sell drugs and parlay it into a record career is selling false hope.

TELL THE PEOPLE THE TRUTH, THEY GAVE YOU THE MONEY AND YOU HAVE NEVER SOLD A DRUG. IT’S OK TO BE WILLIAM ROBERTS II, rather than the second Rick Ross.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Is Common Having Money Issues?

It seems like every other day there is a rapper having a trouble with either their taxes or a foreclosure. Well, we hear that Common has joined the long list of artists having money issues and is facing a foreclosure of his Chicago apartment.

According to TMZ, Common has stopped paying the $2,285 monthly mortgage payments and the bank is none too happy with him. Bank of America is claiming that Common hasn’t paid his mortgage since March 2012, and they have filed for a foreclosure so that they can sell the apartment and recoup their loses.

Let’s hope that Common has just overlooked the expense and will pay off what is due soon. The bank wants to recoup the amount of the mortgage, plus interest and penalties, which total $345,389. Handle your business, Common.
