Block Ent. Teams Up With Capitol/EMI

Atlanta entrepreneur Russell “Big Block” Spencer has teamed up with EMI Music/Capitol to distribute the latest release from his label, Block Entertainment.

Block Entertainment was originally distributed by Sean “Diddy” Combs’ Bad Boy Records in a joint venture with Atlantic Records.

The label released albums on artists like Yung Joc, Jody Breeze, Boyz N The Hood (featuring Young Jeezy) and Gorilla Zoe.

Block Entertainment is planning a new album from Kollosus, who has created a buzz with his single “Settin’ Standards” featuring Gucci Mane.

“I am tremendously excited to partner with Capitol Records, a company with a proven track record in recognizing talent,” said Russell “Big Block” Spencer, CEO of Block Entertainment. “As an emerging voice of Hip-Hop, Kollosus promises to capture the attention of the discerning Hip-Hop audience. The collaboration between Capitol and Block Entertainment is vital to introducing him to a wider audience.”

Kollosus, born Kirk Young, is a Jamaican born, Decatur-based rapper who was discovered after Block witnessed him performing in a showcase.

“I’m not saying I’m through paying my dues in the music business because believe me there have been many days I wondered if this was going anywhere,” Kollosus said of his deal with Block Entertainment. “When I first got signed here, I went straight into the studio and recorded almost fifty songs. That level of work has taught me dedication, sacrifice and how to navigate as a business man.”

Kollosus’ first album I Am Kollosus will be released in the spring of 2010 on Capitol, which will handle the marketing, promotion and distribution of the release.

“Block Entertainment is a force to be reckoned with in the hip hop arena; they have continuously churned out undeniable hip hop stars,” said Leonard Brooks, SVP Urban A&R, EMI Music.

“As we grow Capitol’s urban roster, this association with Block Entertainment makes perfect sense. We are excited to sign Kollosus as well; he has a skillful flow that reflects his years growing up in Atlanta and his Jamaican-born roots. He has a unique sense of street swagger with a global appeal.”

Block Entertainment severed its relationship with Bad Boy and Atlantic in 2007.

In May of 2009, the label’s star artist Yung Joc announced he would no longer record for the label due to a dispute over royalties with the labels.

Popular Rap DJ’s Fired From Hip-Hop Radio

Two popular Hip-Hop radio stations relieved a number of DJ’s from their duties over the weekend.

On Friday (October 30), Clear Channel’s R&B/Rap station Saint Louis’ KATZ-FM 100.3 the Beat changed its format, playing a variety of Halloween and Christmas songs.

Jocks like Kiki the First Lady, DJ AJ and host Dwight Stone were let go from the station due to the change in format.

“The entire Beat staff including myself was just let go,” said Kiki of Saint Louis’ 100.3 The Beat. “I’m good GOD is in the mist! Just want to THANK YOU for all your years of love and support over my radio career!”

In a striking coincidence today (November 2), popular radio host Charlamagne the God was fired from Philadelphia’s WPHI 100.3 The Beat, after the station decided to go in a “different direction.”

The firing comes on the heels of Charlamagne securing the first interview with Beanie Sigel after the Philly rapper released “Average Cat,“ his scathing diss record to former mentor Jay-Z.

Charlamagne the God joined 100.3 The Beat in April of 2008 after leaving his position as co-host of the nationally syndicated “Wendy Williams Experience.”

He hosted a popular morning show every morning from 6:00am – 10:00 AM.

“Salute to Philly I hope you all enjoyed me the past 6 months,” host Charlamagne the God Tweeted today.

Jay-Z, Lil’ Wayne, and the Cost of Loyalty

Author’s Disclaimer: For those who read

my columns weekly for its, as I’ve been told, “intellectual value,” this might

not be for you:

“Never read the Qu’ran or Islamic

scriptures/

Only Psalms I read was on the arms of my

Ni**as/”

—Jay-Z, “Intro,” The Dynasty Roc La Familia, 2000.

Listening to Beanie Sigel excoriate his

former (?) “Big Brother” last week couldn’t have put a wider smile on my face. Simply

put, it’s about time. For those whose lives are forever buried under a rock, it

all started last weekend when the AllHipHop rumor section reported

Beanie Sigel had made certain unflattering advances—or allusions—toward Jay-Z

at a Philly concert.

Upon reading the rumors—which depended solely

on accusations that Sigel had repeatedly declared on stage, “I run this town

tonight”—I couldn’t but hang my head in shame for what, as I believed, Hip-Hop

media had come to. I saw this as yet another validation of my lamentation

a few months back that “[t]he present state of Hip-Hop media is

regrettable. The days of intellectuals, cultural critics, and music scholars

are all but over. Now begins an age of pseudo-journalists and half-witted

bloggers who’ve convinced themselves that a column consists of 400 words and

two paragraphs.” And that, “Everyone has a blog but not enough brains to match

them.” But in less than 24 hours, further details surfaced, which told of Sigel

being escorted by police officers from the venue—compliments of the Jigga man.

As time advanced, it was becoming increasingly clear to some that the best, and

worst, of this ordeal, was yet to come.

Sure enough, a couple of days later

Sigel dropped the much-anticipated diss

record, “What

You’ Talkin’ ‘Bout (Average Cat),” implicitly revealing some salacious

secrets about Jay-Z, the Roc-A-Fella dynasty demolition, and the Jigga man’s

newfound corporate identity—which some of us have known, and written about, for

a while.

Sigel complained of indifference

directed his way by Jay-Z while incarcerated—the many times he’s been locked

up. He also threatened to expose some personal elements Jay-Z might want to

keep secret (“I was the fly on the wall: sh** I witnessed/ I can say sh** that make

B look at you different/”)—for as long as his reputation is valuable. The climax,

however, seemed to be the recounting of a meeting held with HOVA, in which he

pleaded to be released from his contract, but the man in the suit “bounced that

tennis ball around your office for an hour, and went back and forth with me,

and told me you ain’t want to let me go.” (Bounced

a tennis ball? He learned that from the White folks, Beans!) Sigel says

Jay-Z asked if he was cash-strapped, but he shot down any offers: He just wanted

his freedom. Plus, 50 Cent was

plotting a couple of power moves with him and Freeway—both stopped in their

tracks shortly after.

Why did Jay-Z find it so important to

have Beanie around him? The reasons aren’t at all indecipherable—for all the

street credibility lost these last few years (trust me: it matters to HOVA), to

keep his most respected Colonel/Major General around, and, most importantly, to

repudiate rampant rumors that he only cared about a few pet projects (Jay-Z,

Jeezy, Rihanna) who would work the tracks for him.

But in spite of it all, Sigel insists “Average

Cat” isn’t a “diss record.” It’s also not “the green-light for everybody to

start making a diss Jay-Z record.” Far from it. “This is me taking my brother

in the yard for 5 minutes.”

Here’s some salient advice for HOVA: Run like the wind! Don’t attempt to battle

Beans. And don’t send no lieutenant his way, either. If you want J. Cole’s

career eviscerated before it begins, unleash

him on Beans. Your best bet, it seems, might be making things up with Sigel.

This is a guy who, even with all the bullsh** you’ve put him through, still

believes loyalty comes first. You might want to humble thyself, and listen carefully to his concerns and/or

demands.

Unfortunately, Jay-Z appears incapable

of humility—as his

first response was to accuse Sigel of squandering golden opportunities and

of being ungrateful.

Those of us who’ve followed Beans for

years were only left wondering what took so

long. It was evident before long Beans would bust and spill—there’s only so

much a man can take before breaking bounds of loyalty. And, in fact, that might

have been the most loyal thing he did his whole relationship with Jay-Z—refusing

anymore to take slugs for a man whose conscience is only as costly as the next

business deal signed.

And it’s not just Beans. Dame, Calvin Klein, De-Haven,

Jaz-O, Jim

Jones, Peedi

Peedi, Joe

Budden, DMX,

LL Cool J, and Teairra Marí

(“I was shocked, I was sad … Jay didn’t call me himself”), all share similar

views. C’mon, Jay-Z. They can’t be all wrong. Unless, of course, he sees this

as some secret conspiracy to bring a

Black man down!

The Jay-Z-Beanie Sigel controversy couldn’t

have been more timely, as it coincides with reports that Lil’ Wayne, scheduled

to be locked up for a year on July 2007 weapon possession charges, might have

avoided sentencing if he refused to take the fall for the true owner of the guns. For all

my quarrels with Lil’ Wayne, I respect his loyalty.

Late January 2008, video

surfaced of the 30-year-old rapper cussing out his entourage, hurling his

jacket at his DJ, and leading the concert crowd in chants of “F**k You,”

directed toward the men behind him. “I just want all the m####***kas that

[have] been with me, that ain’t gon ever be with me again, to know I did it for

ya’ll,” he said, much to the school-girl-crowd’s oblivion-infused amusement. Earlier

that day, his tour bus was stopped at an Arizona U.S. Border Patrol, and in it discovered

four ounces of marijuana, over 1 ounce of cocaine, 41 grams of Ecstasy, and

various drug paraphernalia.

He had just been rattled by the reality

that promises and their fulfillment in matters of friendship are two separate

and unequal executions.

Lil’ Wayne is currently in a predicament

not unlike that Jazz icon Thelonious Monk faced in 1951 with fellow pianist Bud

Powell, when arrested for drug possession. Powell was 7 years his junior and

considered a younger brother. Monk couldn’t see such budding, bright talent go

to waste, so he took the fall, and, as a result, lost his Cabaret Card—the

Almighty license required to play at liquor-serving Bars; particularly more

costly for a Negro Jazz musician of the times. For 6 years, Monk was denied his

former life, but he came back swinging, and many have known him ever

since—regardless of all the slanderous and condescending definitions formed by

uninformed critics—as a principled pianist with an even better record as a

human being. It would do Lil’ Wayne well to pick up acclaimed professor Robin

D.G. Kelley’s latest work, a stellar biography on Monk, aptly titled, Thelonious

Monk: The Life and Times of an American Original

But one need not even look so far back

as a half-century. Prodigy, one half of the New York legendary group Mobb Deep,

provides one of the finest examples Loyalty has offered in a while. In October

2007, Prodigy was sentenced to 3 1/2 years behind bars for gun possession.

Prodigy contends, however, the real reason he is serving a sentence at all,

following what he believes to be an illegal trunk-search, is for turning down offers,

proposed by the NYPD, to set up G-Unit General 50 Cent.

Speaking a couple of years ago on Sirius Radio, he revealed: “When they locked me

up they tried to get me to set up 50 Cent. They wanted me to plant drugs and

guns in his car. I was like, ‘Hell no, I ain’t doing that.’ They told me if I

plant stuff in his car, they would let me walk.” To avoid his fate, he advised

peers to “stop f**king putting rims on your car, stop buying all this f**king,

fa**ot-ass jewelry that they stealing from black people in Africa, anyway, and

just put cameras in your car. Think about your safety, think about surveillance.”

There’s no evidence to back up Prodigy’s

side, but it’s highly unlikely he would dare accuse the NYPD of such offense if

it never took place.

Prodigy is of the same tribe Beanie

Sigel hails from. Both believe loyalty has no superior. Unfortunately, both

don’t seem to have equally loyal Generals.

So, for instance, while 50 was working

hard behind the scenes trying to

secure an earlier release date for Prodigy, Jay-Z didn’t

think much of Sigel’s plight enough to send “not one picture, a letter.”

And while 50 was recruiting

former foes, putting together an event of mass magnitude for his old neighborhood, Jay-Z was selling

out his old neighborhood for a mess of pottage. Of course Jay-Z isn’t

the worst thing since Santa Claus, and 50 Cent isn’t God’s unblemished gift to

the world; but the contrast is quite startling.

There’s a cost to be paid when

disloyalty sets into any camp. If Jay-Z is smart, and he sure seems so, he

would make quick amends before his empire flattens like a tipped house of cards.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Halloween Pics! Beef Update! Somebody Got Robbed?

DISCLAIMER:

All

content within this section is pure rumor and generally have no factual

info outside of what the streets have whispered in our ear. Read on.LIL KIM TO THE ROC?

You know, this would be a huge slap in the face. We all know that Foxy Brown was a huge part of Jay-Z’s success, but now the rumors are flying that Jay is going in a different direction altogether! He’s signing Lil Kim to Roc Nation???? No further details, but something is coming down the line so we’ll see! I don’t know how I feel about this one, but I can only IMAGINE what Foxy Brown is thinking! The Ill Na Na just dissed Lil Kim for doing dancing with the stars!

MICHAEL JACKSON: THE NEW TUPAC?

I am hearing from a good friend that MiJac may be turning into the new Tupac thanks to his label. I am hearing that the King of Pop will be releasing enough music to make Sony profitable for many years. BUT, I also heard they are very happy to have many, many hours of footage of the KING. This means there are going to be other movies that star MJ. I haven’t seen his new movie, but I heard its good and that’s good enough for me.

ROYCE DA 5’ 9” : A LIL RAPPER DISS?

Royce is a friend of the site, so to speak so this may result in me getting in a lil trouble. But I have heard for the last few weeks that Royce Da 5’ 9” may have a diss song/ verse for a very well-known rapper that is at the top of the game. Said rapper’s money isn’t young any more, but it might be soon since he may need to do a lil skid bid. I have not heard the song, but I am being told that it is being sent over. Royce just released a new CD called Street Hop so go get that.

JAY-Z DIDN’T DISS BEANIE, BUT…

Over the weekend, Jay-Z performed out there in Canada. And well, nothing really happened that was eventful. But one thing I thought was interesting was that Jay and Memph Bleek performed at song that had people looking like, “Is Jay dissing Beans?” But, he wasn’t. On the song “Excuse Me Miss Again,” there is a lyric that said “Beanie Sigel always smoking that La, La, La.” Those are the actual lyrics to the song, but somebody hit me and acted as if the rhyme suddenly had a different meaning now that Beans is going at Jay. Well, he’s not dissing…just taking his brother out to the yard.

I heard Jay brought out Drake to the crowd’s appeasement. Drake did “Successful.” Here is the vid:

YUNG BERG GOT ROBBED AGAIN?

I hope this just stays a rumor! According to rumor, Yung Berg got robbed again. Last night in L.A Berg allegedly got his chain snatched while sitting in the Lambo in front of a club! My sources out there tell me it was a White person that did it too. I heard Berg ran at the dude and tried to fight him a lil bit. I guess the dude got away or something. Nevertheless, I heard there is either video or pics of this.

ILLSEED’S QUICKIES

Grandaddy Souf is dissin’ Rick Ross and Plies for some reason or another. The song is called “Identity Crisis.”

Shout out to Miss Mouth!

Rihanna’s got all kinds of leaks going on! Songs all over the place!

A lot of people didn’t like that line Beans said about knowing stuff that would upset Beyonce with regards to Jay. Still, we all wonder what he knows…LOL!

Solange has opted to continue her career as an indie artist. I’m not mad at that.

Lamar Odom and Khloe Kardashian got that prenump out of the way.

Yesterday, Lil Wayne was supposed to stream live from Ustream. It never happened.

I hope Joe and Tahiry get it back. She recently cried over dude in an interview.

Gucci Mane Scraps A&T Concert Over Legal Issues

A controversial concert featuring Atlanta-based rapper Gucci Mane at North Carolina A&T was scrapped on Saturday (October 31), because the rapper is on house arrest.

Gucci Mane was forced to back out of the concert at Greensboro Coliseum because of a recent parole violation.

Due to the violation, Gucci Mane is prohibited from traveling outside of Georgia, unless he receives permission from the court.

News of the rapper’s appearance caused division amongst students at A&T and the university eventually dropped all official support for the concert due to Gucci Mane’s controversial image.

Over 11,000 tickets were sold to the concert, which went off without a hitch and featured rappers Fabolous, Trey Songz, Nicki Minaj, OJ Da Juiceman, Keri Hilson, Mario and others.

Gucci Mane was also forced to cancel a controversial appearance at Florida A&M’s homecoming on October 24, due to the probation violation. Help AllHipHop.com and take this survey please!

NAS – “FILM” – PRODUCED BY C-SICK

Jay-Z: He Came, He Saw, He Conquered!

Jay Z is probably the only “rap” dude that can get grown

men excited.  Now, for what may

appear to be obvious reasons, after that statement, I feel the need to interject

“no h###.”  Do people even say that

anymore?  And not to digress, but I

ask, was it ever cool to say anyway?

Last year, my wife and I had the privilege of witnessing the sold out,

Heart of the City tour when he and Mary J. Blige visited Baltimore.  And on several different occasions

during that day, I recall gleefully saying, “I’m excited!”  Truth be told, I did have an early

afternoon sip of my favorite blended Canadian whisky, but I won’t put my

gleefulness on the drink.  Instead,

I was honestly excited to hear Jay spit his lyrics in person.  You know, “flyer than the piece of paper

bearing my name.  I got hottest

chick in the game, wearing my chain.

My name is Hov!”

That night wasn’t my first time seeing Jay on tour.  As a matter of fact, I had the

opportunity to see him on two prior occasions.  The first time was probably him at his

best, entertainment wise, and that was during the Hard Knock Life Tour.  It was a Roc-A-Fella, Ruff Ryder

collaboration with special guests Method Man and Redman.  That show was bananas.  Anyone who was there would concur and if

you were unable to bare witness yourself, I suggest you go rent the movie

Backstage.

The second time I saw Jay was when he toured with R.

Kelly.  I believe that tour was

billed “The Best of Both Worlds.”  I

must admit, the CD was and still is incredible.  I think their plan to record and then

tour together had the potential to be monumental; however, we all know the

outcome.  For reasons never

mentioned (wink), Jay and Kels didn’t hit the stage together until an hour after

the scheduled time.  Still, the show

itself was amazing.  And once again,

Jay did him.  That was during the

time when he rapped, “it’s not even close, just leave it alone.  I’m Michael Jordan, I play for the team

I own.”  Hey, I was impressed then

and I’m even more impressed now.

In preparation for the Blueprint 3 experience, initially

scheduled to drop on Friday September 11, 2009, I recalled all of my Jay

moments, which culminated with me being in attendance at his sold out show last

night at the First Mariner Arena.

Before purchasing the BP3, I first viewed my copy of Backstage, which I

own on VHS. As I watched the tape, I rejoiced in my memories of seeing the

actual live show.  I also wondered

if the Muslim brother who killed the cipher that Jay and DMX had going on

backstage, as seen in the video footage, ever got signed.  He was nice!  That night in the spring of 1999, Red

and Meth were dangling from the rafters above the crowd performing How High,

Beanie Sigel was introduced to us spitting acapella to an attentive and

astonished crowd, we heard the growl and bark of DMX and saw him stand toe to

toe with Jay.  And Jay, well

hindsight shows now that he was just getting started.    In preparation for the

Blueprint 3 experience, I also listened to the first and second Blueprint’s

remembering my favorites and recalling what I was doing during the times those

songs were played in heavy rotation.

And as I watched his Madison Square Garden performance on FUSE, I wore my do

rag (just because), which my wife found to be hilarious.  Needless to say, I’m a Jay Z

fan.

Last night’s performance was immaculate.  I stood on my feet for more than ninety

minutes with a crowd of roughly 14,000 people.  I sung along to countless hits.  I two stepped and brushed my shoulders

off.  And in the midst of it all, I

had an epiphany.  As I watched Jay

Z’s influence on the crowd, which ranged in ages from 3 on up (yup a 3 year old

got on stage and put the Roc sign in the air), with representations of all

different ethnicities, I admitted for the first time, that he is the greatest

rapper of all time.  That was hard

for me to say, because up until then, I always professed Tupac to be the

G.O.A.T.  So in my comparison of Jay

to Pac, I concluded that I was fond of Tupac because he spoke to my youthful and

rebellious spirit.  Tupac captured

and voiced feelings that I could relate to as a young man, minus the

responsibilities that I have now as an adult.  That’s not to say that Jay Z did not

voice relatable experiences when he initially debuted as a Roc-A-Fella artist,

but to Jay’s advantage we’ve had thirteen years to grow together, and as I then

related to Tupac as a child, I now relate to Jay Z as a man.

I think it’s ludicrous for an artist like Gucci Mane to

say Jay Z isn’t the best.  Then

again, no it’s not.  Maybe it’s

bothersome knowing that if Gucci Mane is saying that Jay isn’t the best, the

thought of who he may suggest is better, which I honestly hope isn’t himself, is

offensive.  Allow me to also add

that I don’t think Baby was serious when he most recently said Lil Wayne was

better than Jay Z because “he does the most and make the most money.”  If he was serious, then in the voice of

Ed Lover, facial expression intact I must say, “C’mon Son.  Get the f### out of here!”

In addition to being lyrical and the fact that he’s been

successful on all levels, he has debuted eleven number one albums, surpassing

Elvis Pressley.  But probably more

important than anything else to me is what Jay Z embodies, which is the essence

of young men raised in inner city America.  We shared the same experiences.  We were dealt similar hands and faced

the same obstacles.  Many of us

became statistics and fell victim to societal ills, but there were a few who

successfully managed.  Jay Z

obviously was one who succeeded and was intelligent and creative enough to

lyrically convey his pathway to success, with the hope that his message would

somehow inspire those of us who thought his level of success was impossible and

unattainable.  Thanks Jay for

showing us that it’s not.

Oftentimes, BIG and Tupac are the only two MC’s that we

place slightly ahead of Jay in argument, which is unfortunate in his case

because how can one compete against nostalgia?  Honestly, their body of work is

incomparable to Jay Z’s.  Real talk,

it’s like comparing apples to oranges.

Feel me on this:  I was

raised in a town where the best basketball playground legend ever will always be

Skip Wise.  I’ve been around people

who have vehemently told me that if Skip Wise would have made it in the league,

he would have been better than Michael Jordan.  I’m certain that most people would say

that we can’t intelligently make that argument simply because we’re comparing an

if to an is; a what would have been to a what was.  With that being said, consider what

we’re doing when we compare Jay Z to BIG and Pac.  We’re

comparing new material to old material.

We’re comparing growth to something that’s infertile.  We’re comparing life and death, a person

to a corpse.  We’re comparing what

we think, to what we know.  So, for

myself, from this day forward, it’s no longer what Pac meant to me, instead it’s

what Jay Z means to me.

Hands down, he has accomplished what he intended to

do.  He came, he saw, and he

conquered.  So as he says in the

chorus of Everyday a Star is Born, “clap for him.”

Snoop Dogg, Redman and Method Man – Classics in Session (Concert Review)

This past Thursday at the Nokia Theatre in New York City, three of the most notable and some would say most influential artists in their respective primes, brought the present to the past, then back to the future in style with the Wonderland High School Tour. How else could you describe it? Over 45 years of professional experience between the three, close to 20 studio albums pressed, and know by millions across the globe, Snoop Dogg, Redman & Method Man led the packed audience down memory lane, while proving that each could still hold their ground.

Redman and Method Man opened the show to immediate roars while a small squad brought out a few old school fist pumps (ala Arsenio Hall). There was electricity in the air, as well as other things. Redman was the sparkplug of the two, free roaming the entire stage from the start. While Method Man worked the crowd as well, just less animated compared to his brethren. All of this was happening before the first song was performed.

They started off with hits from the “Blackout 2”, showing off their master of ceremony skills, playing a Hip-Hop inspired game of Simon Says with the crowd. Not one command from the “high” flyers was met with a rebuttal. The audience was building their stride, anticipating what was to come. When Redman took it back to 1992 with ‘Time for Some Action’ (I know, the title was grammatically correct), the crowd exploding into one arm bouncing and tippy toe jumps at a hectic pace. Then Method Man, showing love to his Wu-Tang family including ODB (rest in peace), jumped two years ahead with his hit “M-E-T-H-O-D Man”. The classics were in session from that point on from ‘You’re All That I Need’ to ‘I’ll Be That’ to ‘How High’ and so on. And what is a Redman and Method Man performance without the stage dives. Nobody was hurt during the ritual.

Little did the crowd know that while Method Man was “walking on water” (he was standing on top of the crowd that was holding him up), Snoop Dogg was making his way into the building, rocking his Yankee blue fitted with the matching Yankees jacket. After a brief intermission, the Dogg Father was on stage and the “electricity” in the air became thicker. It was all about ‘Gangsta Luv’ from the start.

Snoop Dogg is just too cool for even himself. His swag is impeccable, and although complaints are levied against artists that perform in a box on stage, Snoop even makes the box acceptable. It’s only right that Snoop Dogg is laid back. All of his hit records are smooth and they reach across his entire career. The West Coast was definitely in attendance with Lady of Rage making an appearance, while Ice T and Coko were seen backstage. Dogg Pound representative, Kurupt brought lyrical and hype man skills to the table. The audience loved it, singing along with all of Snoops hits from ‘Gin N’ Juice’ to ‘2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted” (where Snoop showed his fellow fallen soldier some love) to “Ain’t No Fun featuring Kurupt”.

Overall, the Wonderland High School Tour proved that Career Artists are just as viable now as to when they’ve debuted. So be on the lookout for more features on Career Artists in Hip-Hop.

Heath Ledger Directs Music Video For Australian Rapper

Heath Ledger may be gone, but the posthumous Oscar winner’s work behind the camera is being showcased in a music video from Australian rapper N’fa Forster-Jones.

The Associated Press reports the entertainer, who had been childhood friends with Ledger, posted the  3-minute, 31-second clip for his song “Cause an Effect” on his YouTube and MySpace pages on Thursday  (Oct. 29).

According to Forster-Jones, the actor’s involvement came after a phone conversation they had shortly before his unexpected death in January 2008.

“He gave me a call one morning, as he often did at crazy hours, and he’s like, ‘N’fa, I’ve got this idea for a video,'” the rapper said in a clip which detailed how the video came about.

The filming of the “Cause an Effect” video was not a lengthy process as Forster-Jones noted the video was shot in one day in the garage of Ledger’s beachside apartment. The clip debuted earlier this month at a collection of works from the actor at the Rome Film Festival.

“He was basically running around directing me in each shot. It was a really cool day,” said the rapper of Ledger, who after dying of a prescription drug overdose won a best supporting actor Oscar for his work as the Joker in the summer 2008 blockbuster The Dark Knight. “Every day I count my blessings that I got to have him direct this piece of art.”

Prior to his death, Ledger shot a handful of videos for artists he liked.

Lil Wayne and Birdman Involved in New Copyright Lawsuit

More legal trouble has emerged for Lil Wayne as the New Orleans hitmaker is being sued by a man who contributed to his joint album with Birdman, Like Father, Like Son.

The copyright infringement lawsuit, which was filed Friday (Oct. 30) by Thomas Marasciullo in a Manhattan federal court, claims that Lil Wayne and Birdman’s label, Cash Money Records, arranged for Marasciullo to cut some “‘Italian-styled’ spoken word recordings” in 2006.

The recordings, the suit noted, were later used on four songs on the joint project and five tracks on Birdman’s 2007 release, 5 * Stunna, without pay or permission.

According to Marasciullo, several short songs he says he wrote, recorded and copyrighted feature a man’s voice delivering mob-movie-flavored repartee. Among the tunes featuring the Florida resident were including “Loyalty” and “Respect.”

Released in 2006, Like Father, Like Son featured the hit single, “Stuntin’ Like My Daddy,” as well as “Respect.”

The gold-selling album, which featured appearances from Rick Ross, Fat Joe, Tha Dogg Pound and T-Pain, debuted at number three on the Billboard 200, selling 176,000 copies.

Birdman’s 5 * Stunna contained the popular Lil Wayne-assisted lead single, “Pop Bottles.”

The suit further stated that Marasciullo realized his work was being used when his daughter discovered his “Respect” while trying to buy a ringtone version of the hit Aretha Franklin song of the same name.

When he demanded payment for his work, the lawsuit mentioned that Marasciullo’s son was fired from a recording engineer job at Cash Money.

The Associated Press reports the label and various music distribution outlets are also being sued by Marasciullo, who seeks unspecified damages.

The new lawsuit comes amid troubling times for Lil Wayne, who pled guilty last week to attempted weapons possession from a 2007 incident where authorities stopped the rapper’s tour bus after a concert in New York. Lil Wayne faces a year in jail from that case.

The rapper is also mired in the fallout from being arrested last year during a routine stop at a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint near Yuma, Arizona. In that case, Lil Wayne was charged with a string of felonies that included possession of a narcotic drug for sale, possession of dangerous drugs, misconduct involving weapons and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Beck and K.A.R. were featured on Fat Joe’s “300 Brolic” remix. In May, the group released a self-titled mixtape executive produced by Fat Joe and Pistol Pete.

In addition to Fat Joe and Pistol Pete, K.A.R.’s mixtape features guest appearances from Ace Hood, Sheek Louch, Hell Rell, DJ Khaled, Jadakiss and others.

Knockout Nation: Pacquiao Will KO Cotto? Berto-Mosley Beef, Mayweather Debate, Mike Tyson or George Foreman?

Freddie Roach Lays Out Cotto Blueprint

Manny Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach has never been shy when it comes to interviews. As the days wind down to the anticipated showdown between his fighter and welterweight titlist Miguel Cotto, Roach laid out some interesting quotes on how he sees the fight going down.

“I’m very confident in my guy. With the power he’s bringing up in weight I feel he’ll knock Cotto out,” Roach explained in a conference call earlier this week. “We got two more big sparring days and then we’ll start tapering off.”

On Cotto’s last fight against Joshua Clottey, Roach argued that Miguel was ready to quit in the 9th, and that his defensive lapses will be his undoing against Pacquiao’s speed.

“He makes adjustments when he fights southpaws. He’ll have trouble with the speed,” he explained. “I think he’ll try to be a counterpuncher and not come at us. Manny’s punching so much harder than he’s ever had. Cotto doesn’t have great defense, he’s very hittable. He looked better in the Clottey fight but he did try and quit in the 9th round…we’re going to start quick.”

To some critics, Pacquiao has become overrated for his win over a weakened welterweight version of Oscar De La Hoya, and a Ricky Hatton people are now calling shot.

Roach quickly dismissed these comments as simply Monday morning quarterbacking.

“Manny would beat Oscar on his best day. Hatton was supposed to be stronger, too” Roach pointed out. “Skill wins fights and Manny is the better boxer. If we stay off the ropes, it’ll be to our benefit. We’ve got to take his confidence away right away”

Of course, Manny Pacquiao was his usual modest self on the call, and declined to co-sign his trainer’s prediction of a knockout.

“Cotto is a bigger guy, hard puncher, and strong,” Pacquiao said. “For me, I focus on the fight. If the knockout comes, it comes. I always believe in my power.”

November 14 can’t get here quick enough.

Berto Furious with Mosley, Lays Down Challenge

For the last year, there have been rumors that Andre Berto would eventually face Shane Mosley in a classic “passing the torch” style contest. Throughout it all, both guys have remained very respectful to each other. That was, until this week.

Earlier this week, Shane Mosley conducted an interview where he proclaimed that he’d ruin Berto’s career, should the young welterweight decide to step in the ring with him in January.

Berto, a Twitter regular, was incensed and uncharacteristically went after Shane on personal levels regarding his divorce and steroids controversy.

“I want him to say all that smack to me. I showed him only respect now he’s getting real slick out the mouth. He grew a pair of balls overnight,” Berto tweeted. “Is Shane Mosley that desperate talking all this crazy s### not knowing he’s making himself look like a dumb ass like he did with Floyd? Boy I will shred yo’ ass up. You popping smack at the wrong one I’m not Floyd. His old lady had the pants in the relationship now she’s gone so he’s starting to speak up like a big boy ha ha, I see you. You know what I don’t even think I want to fight Shane Mosley you know he’s known for taking them steroids. Probably got some in his pocket now.”

So far, Mosley has not responded to Berto’s tweet rampage. But nonetheless, we have a fight on our hands.

You can’t blame Berto for his passion, considering how flippant Mosley was in his dismissal of him. Still, Andre cannot go into the ring angry against the fighter of Mosley’s caliber. A brawl plays right into his hands and gets Berto knocked out.

Most experts and fans favor Mosley in this matchup based on Berto’s alleged chin issues (Collazo, Rivera). However, by January Mosley will have been out of the ring for a full year. And Berto is quick, and will be a more elusive target than Mosley’s last two powerful but defense deficient opponents (Mayorga, Mosley).

Berto’s a live underdog, but I have to lean towards Mosley on experience. Your thoughts?

Margarito Calls Out Cotto, Gets Rebuffed

Disgraced former welterweight champ Antonio Margarito is hoping to make his boxing return with a rematch of his signature fight against Miguel Cotto.

In a recent public statement, Margarito challenged Cotto to a return bout early next year if the Puerto Rican gets past Manny Pacquiao.

“I’d give Cotto a rematch. I think that fight will be good,” Margarito told ESPN. The only loss he has is to me, and if he wants to remove that thorn from his side, then I will give him a second defeat.”

From Puerto Rico, Miguel Cotto immediately shot down the challenge and made it clear whether he thought Margarito cheated against him last July.

“I don’t care about anything Margarito has to say,” Cotto stated to the Associated Press. “He lost all of his credibility, benefits and consideration in boxing. When it comes to Miguel Cotto, he will not earn another penny.”

Margarito is currently serving a one year suspension after officials discovered plaster-like residue in his hand-wrappings before his  January title match with Shane Mosley. Mosley subsequently dominated Margarito and knocked him out.

Does Antonio Margarito deserve a second chance? While there’s no evidence that he cheated in previous fights, it’s hard to imagine he would pick the Mosley fight to be the first time to pull that stunt. Additionally, you can’t ignore how quickly Cotto’s face was bludgeoned in the later rounds. And who can forget Sebastian Lujan having his ear ripped open?

I propose as a condition of his reinstatement, his first fight must be an immediate rematch with Mosley.

Floyd Mayweather and RA the Rugged Man Spar on the Radio

Last night, Floyd Mayweather got on the radio and engaged in a heated debtate with RA the Rugged Man over his recent selection of opponents.

Both guys had good points, however I felt RA glossed over the fact Mayweather went up to 154 and fought De La Hoya at his natural weight, and outclassed an undefeated Hatton. If these were bad opponents for Mayweather 2 years ago, they can’t be good wins for Pacquiao now.  Plus RA shouldn’t have tried to imply Ricardo Lopez wasn’t great.

Check it out, hilarious. I’m ready for a part 2!

Mythical Matchup of the Week: “Iron” Mike Tyson vs. George Foreman (Prime)

As a young fighter, Mike Tyson’s mentor C## D’Amato used to show him films of all the previous champs. The legendary trainer would break down their styles, offering Mike detailed analysis of their strengths and weaknesses.

When they got to George Foreman, C## is reputed to have told him that no swarmer, ie.come forward aggressive fighter (Dempsey, Marciano, Frazier) ever beats Foreman. He was too strong, and would push them into range of his deadly uppercuts, as seen in his two round blitz of a previously undefeated Joe Frazier in 1973.

Trying to box Foreman wasn’t easy, either. The former champion possessed a hard jab, and could cut off the ring quickly and trap opponents on the ropes. Ken Norton fell victim to this and suffered a brutal KO in just two rounds. Ali was forced to adopt the rope a dope when Foreman was able to easily trap him on the ropes despite Muhammad’s excellent footwork.

And when he was landed on, George Foreman held a sturdy chin that served him later in the 90s, when as an old man the young fighters were wary of mixing it up with him on the inside. Add this up with his punching power, and it’s easy to see why pundits expected Foreman to reign for a long time.

Mike Tyson, contrary to popular belief, did not excel at in-fighting. He retained a bad habit throughout his career of stopping his offense anytime he was clinched. This was unlike his idol Jack Dempsey and others like Joe Frazier, who would punish opponents in clinches: whether through legal punches or foul shots to the kidney, hips, or groin.

Tyson’s lethal game was at mid-range. From there he could rip off hard combinations. His great head movement and weaving kept him from absorbing punishment, and kept him in position to crash home counters on his usually larger opponents.

Against Foreman, this would be crucial. Tyson would not want to get too close, as Foreman would simply push him back by his shoulders and smash him with uppercuts and hooks. At mid-range, Tyson would have opportunities to counter the slower Foreman. Although Foreman shook off several Frazier left hooks in their two bouts, Big George would have never faced someone like Tyson, who was blessed with dynamite and speed in both hands.

With all that said, there’s one other Tyson flaw that I feel would sink him against Foreman, and that is Iron Mike’s inability to fight going backwards. His offense is 100% forward, and when any fighter has forced him in the other direction he loses most of the leverage on his punches. George Foreman is likely the strongest heavyweight champion physically, edging others like Jim Jeffries and Jack Johnson. At many points during the fight, he will move Tyson backwards. It will be bullying, but not involve all the grappling that Holyfield did against Mike in 1996. It will be shoving coupled with hard punches. And on the backfoot Tyson doesn’t have the capabilities to make Foreman pay like Ali and even Jimmy Young did.

This is a shootout and a great fight to debate. To add more allure to this matchup, rumors persist that Tyson refused to fight Foreman in 1990 mostly due to what C## D’Amato had instilled in him about Foreman’s abilities.

So who are you going with, Tyson or Foreman?

Breaking News: Jay-Z’s First Response To Beanie Sigel

Jay-Z has responded to the barbed words of Beanie Sigel, in the aftermath of a diss song called “What You Talkin Bout (I Ain’t Your Average Cat)” at a Canadian Press conference.

Jay-Z appeared at Montreal’s Bell Centre to answer questions from writers and reporters.

Sigel, once a prominent rapper in Jay’s Roc-A-Fella Records, expressed a number of issues with his former comrade. These matters ranged from loyalty to allegations that he had Sigel removed from a concert in Philadelphia by police.

Jay-Z made no mention of most questions that bothered Sigel, but he did say he felt he helped his counterpart greatly in an interview conducted with larueduhiphop.com.

“Beanie Sigel, to be honest and you can look it up, just to be honest…was driving two Bentleys. I don’t know how,” Jay-Z said at a press conference to the Canadian Hip-Hop site. “Its impossible to drive two cars at the same time. With his momma in the sticks, selling 800,000. I don’t know what more you can do for somebody.”

“What people choose to do when they obtain that type of success, at some point you gotta look in the mirror and look at yourself,” Jay continued. “Beanie Sigel had a record deal, a record label and a clothing line…and never went platinum. Ever. I don’t know in the history of rap has anyone done so much with so little. So, I don’t know what more can you do for a person at that point. A record deal – that’s normal. A record label and a clothing line. If that’s not pushing the person…s**t.”

Friday morning (October 30), Sigel spoke to Philadelphia 100.3 radio host Charlamagne Tha God and aired out his grievances, which seemed more about loyalty than any other topic.

“I think I held my tongue long enough about this whole Roc-a-Fella situation,” Sigel. “I was the realest thing that happened to the Roc. The Roc was just a rock. I brought the Fellas to Roc-a-Fella Records; Hot 97, State Prop, y’all remember. I brought the street cred to that. I fought all them battles: Jadakiss, Nas, Dipset. Anybody you woulda told me to go after. Matter of fact, you ain’t even have to tell me. I frontlined for that thing of ours, for that diamond that people was throwin’ up. I’da took a bullet at that time.”

Sigel also stated the he wasn’t really dissing Jay-Z even though some of his raps seemed to counter that assertion.

The displeased rapper explained, “I’m not really dissing Jay. It’s certain parts in there where my emotions … it’s an emotional record for me. When I listened to The Blueprint 3, I heard a lot of shots directed towards people.

OFFICIAL VIDEO-Jay-Z Ft. Alicia Keys -“Empire State Of Mind”

In the midst of what could be the most detrimental Hip-Hop beef in his career…Jay-Z makes another powerhouse move.

The native New Yorker releases “Empire State of Mind,” a hit record that features Alicia Keys.

The song is set in the consummate metropolitan city and the video is artfully produced in black and white.

Meanwhile, the lush video is in stark contrast to the recent war of words that has been sparked by former comrade and Roc-a-fella capo Beanie Sigel. Sigel has gone on record with his issues with Jay-Z, which are far more personal than many of the other recent rap beefs.

Well, for now, there is a lull in the action. Enjoy this inspirational video.
