Whats the deal? The end of the year is hours away and once again its that time again. With a decrease in the death of US soldiers in Iraq for 2008 and Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich naming Roland Burris to fill Barack Obamas Senate seat, the year ends on another newsworthy note. And with that comes the second annual Twas the Night Before New Years, another spoof on Clement Clarke Moores The Night Before Christmas. Shout out to Mr. Moore, whose story was the blueprint, Skillz for providing the inspiration for this with annual Rap Ups, Tyree for coming through in the 11th hour with the feedback and the sounding boards for making 2008 a year of memories. So here it comes the final Last Word of 2008: Twas the Night Before New YearsTwas the night before New Years, when all through the houseAmy continued to ramble on about nothing, before she passed outCelebrations in the air, its high time for changeBeyoncé has identity issues, which is why shes acting so strangeSashas so Fierce, mobilizing all the Single LadiesR. Like their East Coast brethren, it was the veteran West Coast artists that made the most noise in 2008.
The West delivered good to solid LPs from vets Ice Cube, E-40, and Snoop Dogg. The Game also supplied a shining mainstream moment with LAX, the only gold-certified album to come from the Westside this year.
Away from the mainstream, thriving underground scenes have developed. The Bay Area, for example, has numerous acts like Mistah Fab, Ya Boy, Keak Da Sneak, and San Quinn who have thrived simply by making music for their small but devoted audiences. In LA, artists like Planet Asia and Crooked I have done the same while retaining mainstream aspirations.
Its hard to predict when the West will return to its former glory, but until then the region will sustain as a self-contained unit until the rest of the world is ready to catch back on.
Ice Cube
If youre looking for an example of a veteran thriving through the independent grind, look no further than the Don Mega. Cube released his political-heavy 8th album Raw Footage in August to rave reviews. To date, the album is on pace to give Cube is second consecutive best-selling independent album of the year.
In addition to working with fellow vets Scarface and Nas (Gangsta Rap Made Me Do It), Ice Cube reached out to new school stars The Game (Get Use To It) and Young Jeezy (I Got My Locs On).
On the film front, Cube starred with Katt Williams in the comedy First Sunday, which opened at number two at the box office and grossed over $37 million. Look for Cube to make more noise in 2009 with a new movie featuring Mike Epps and Young Jeezy called Janky Promoters, and a possible collaboration album with Nas and Scarface.
Standout Songs:
Gangsta Rap Made Me Do It, I Got My Locs On,
E-40
The King of Slang and Ambassador of the Yay retained his winning ways in 2008 with the release of The Ball Street Journal, 40s 11th album.
Pushed through his own Sick Wid It Records, 40 Waters new album featured The Game, Gucci Mane, Snoop Dogg, Too $hort, Bun B, Shawty Lo, Ice-T, and Akon. The album debuted six on Billboards Top Hip-Hop albums list.
A hustler since his first album Federal back in 1993, E-40 will keep the Bay Areas self-contained music scene thriving; recession or not.
Standout Songs:
Break Ya Ankles, Wake It Up
Crooked I
Long-overlooked emcee Crooked I took it upon himself to capitalize on the hype gained in 2007 through his innovative Hip-Hop Weekly series.
Hip-Hop Weekly, started in April 2007, featured the talented lyricist creating a new song per week over old and new instrumentals, and many times taking requests and shouting out fans on the tracks. The successful series finally concluded in April 2008.
From there, Crooked hits the streets running with three mixtapes: St. Valentines Day Bossacre, The Block Obama, and The Block Obama II, which found distribution through iTunes, Amazon, and Rhapsody.
His efforts were duly noted throughout the industry, as now other emcees such as Freeway have adopted modified versions of the Hip-Hop Weekly series to generate their own buzz.
Look for Crooked I to make more noise in 2009 through the super-group Slaughterhouse (Royce Da 59, Joell Ortiz, Joe Budden, Crooked I) and his anticipated debut B.O.S.S. (Beginning Of Something Serious).
Snoop Dogg
Its quite possible that Kanye West got his idea for an auto-tune only album from the success of Snoops Sexual Eruption. The lead single for Ego Trippin was released quietly at the end of 2007, but subsequently blew up over the beginning of this year courtesy of radio and club spins, plus a highly stylized throwback video. The top ten single enabled Snoops ninth studio album to debut number three on Billboards Top 100 chart.
With a second season of Snoop Doggs Fatherhood recently launched on November 30th, Snoop D-O- Double G remains one of Hip-Hops brightest crossover stars.
Standout Songs:
Sexual Eruption, Life Of Da Party
The Game
Comptons The Game solidified his position as one the Wests biggest artists with LAX, his third and alleged final Hip-Hop album. The LP had a staggering list of guests ranging from rappers like DMX and Raekwon to R&B stars in Chrisette Michele and Bilal. The album earned Game a gold plaque and a narrow miss of receiving his third consecutive #1 LP by less than twelve hundred copies.
Game went on to build his own resume of guest appearances by working with a diverse group of artists in Nas (Make The World Go Round), Good Charlotte (Fight Song Remix), E-40 (Pain No More), and former rival Joe Budden (The Future). If The Game is indeed hanging up the microphone, hes going out on top.
Standout Songs:
Games Pain, My Life
The Verdict:
Even though LAX fell short of its expectations, The Game was still the Wests shining star in 2008.
Throughout
2008 T.I. found himself alternating between personal and professional
challenges in the form of promoting a new album, legal woes, and a persistent
Bankhead rival.
On
March 27, T.I., real name Clifford Harris, was sentenced to 1 year in prison
for two counts of illegally possessing machine guns and silencers, and one
count of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.
Pending
fulfillment of all requirements under his plea agreement, T.I.s sentence will
commence on March 27, 2009.
In
addition to being fined $100,000, the Atlanta star was required to complete
1000 hours of community service, which included speaking to at-risk youth and
public service announcements.
During
this time, Bankhead rapper Shawty Lo repeatedly baited T.I. with video taunts
and accusations that the Grammy-winning emcee was lying about his past.
The
feud simmered over the summer, most notably at radio station Hot 107.9s
Birthday Bash. There, Shawty Lo boldly proclaimed over the big screen that A
New King Is Born, and featured a video of an inept FBI agent resembling his
rival. T.I. responded in kind during his set by mocking Los trademark dance.
Although
the beef was allegedly squashed various times after sit-downs between the men,
T.I.s blockbuster album Paper Trail
showcased numerous veiled and blatant jabs at Shawty Lo.
The
tension spilled over into violence at Radio Ones 4th annual Dirty
Awards (November 24).
During
a Shawty Lo performance of Dont I, a direct diss record to T.I.s camp,
Grand Hustle member Alfamega reportedly hurled a chair onto the stage.
As
other Grand Hustle members attempted to confront Los camp, police moved in to
break up the potential melee.
Later,
T.I. and Lo again met backstage and supposedly agreed to stop any further
derogatory comments against each other. T.I. then publicly on stage reiterated
the feud should end and denounced the violence that had taken place.
The
truce proved short-lived, as T.I. drew the ire of Los entourage while
performing his verse from Aint I. According to Shawty Los camp, T.I.
allegedly changed lyrics to take some verbal jabs at his rival.
The
police werent quick enough this time, as Alfamega allegedly assaulted Shawty
Los brother before being pepper sprayed and jailed along with Grand Hustle
member Big Kuntry.
In
the fallout from the incident, both sides chose to blame the other for another
Hip-Hop awards show being ruined by unnecessary violence.
I
didn’t go and start nothing. If they rewind the cameras, they’ll see how it
started, Shawty Lo explained. I’m a man. I respect every man as a man. If a
man disrespects me, what am I supposed to do? T.I. needs to contain his people. We’re not
standing down. I performed my music. I didn’t come to start no beef with him.
Alfamega
countered by speculating that the months of feuding stems from Shawty Lo being
jealous of T.I.s success.
I think [Lo] feels like he ain’t getting his just due, Alfamega
stated. I can understand, but God will give you blessings, and your blessings
might not as be as big as the next man. Be thankful for what you got I’m embarrassed by the
whole situation.
Since the incident Shawty Lo has made
several videos speaking on the matter, and it appears this feud will continue
well into 2009.

Farewell, 2008! Personally, I am not going to miss you. I think it was an extraordinary year that had more peaks and valleys than the Himalayas! The recession, the election, Barack, foreclosures, Hurricanes in Texas, Bush gets shoes thrown at him, Lil Wayne, loss of Bernie, Eartha, MC Breed, Heath, Isaac and others. Whew it was one hell of a year. The good thing about hitting rock bottom or coming close is it forces you to up your game. I was talking with one of my IC friends and we both agreed that it was a pretty crazy time, but we were dead set to rise to the occasion.
I charge everybody that reads this to accept the challenge too. Lets have fun, but lets take it to the next level. Lets support the Hip-Hop we love. Lets kick these wack acts out. Lets come together and leave the hate in the past. I promise to do better and I promise to deliver the next level on a platter in 09.
I smile when face to face with adversity, but I never blink.

SIGNS THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN END
Baltimore police have found and charged four men for hunting and killing a 14-year-old boy. The damn dudes were robbed in a house. They took the law into their own hands. They jumped into their car and got some guns. They came back, scooped up some friends and then came up on Steven Graham, the 14 year old. The boy was riding his bike past a fire station and somebody shot him dead straight like that. This boy did have some issues with the law, but they dont know what he might have been doing with these 5 grown men. Anyway, what are five men doing hunting down a boy like that? The Baltimore mens ages ranged from 43 to 56 REALLY? All four were charged with murder, assault, conspiracy and weapons-related counts. WAS IT WORTH IT? People are losing their cotton-pickin minds!

CHILD ACTOR-TURNED-P### STAR GETS PREGNANT!
Remember Jaimee Foxworth? She used to star on Family Matters as the cutie Judy. Well she grew up and eventually did a few p#### flicks. Definitely not a good look, but, maybe her star rose because of it. Shes had some issues outside of that and it landed her on a show called Celebrity Rehab. Now she is shaping up to be a part of Middle America. She is now having a baby, according to People magazine. I havent been this happy in years. Being sober has opened my eyes to a whole new world. Ive been through a lot of pain in the past and I never really wanted a child until recently. I now look forward to years of joy to share with my child. I wish her well. I have nothing snarky to say about her man. She actually emailed me a few years back. Real cool chick.
YUNG BERGS CHAIN GOES HOME
Man, the story of Yung Bergs chain has been something else. It has had more twists and turns than a daytime soap opera. A couple nights ago, there was a show in Detroit and the chain showed up and made an appearance. I am not sure who the headliner was. All I know is that Trick Trick and Royce Da 5 9 rocked it. As Trick Trick performed, there was the Transformer chain on the neck of Trick Tricks brother. Man I know that chain is exhausted with all that touring. Anyway, I thought Id let you know.

Soulja Boy has diarrhea of the mouth again, going at Nas:
The n***a that killed Hip-Hop is Nas. He came out publicly and said Hip-Hop is dead. If Nas would have never said that, they wouldnt have had that terminology. He killed his own career with that s**t. If you do Hip-Hop and you come out and say Hip-Hop is dead, you killing your own career.

I think that people give MTV too much power because thats the reason why people think rap music is a particular way. Theyve left rap in a sad state, the fact that MTV is more powerful than hip-hop is outrageous. Ive never been disappointed with the artists, Ive been disappointed with the coverage of them. Radio and television are worse and some artists will say anything or do anything because if they do, theyll be financially taken care of, because they will get those good aspects broadcast and theyll build a profile. Print media, radio, television- theyve just covered hip-hop wrong.

EPIC FAIL OF THE DAY
Rap music originated in medieval Scottish pubs, claims American professor? Somebody will be looking for a job soon, I would have to say. I saw this headline and it blew my mind that Professor Ferenc Szasz has decided to proclaim that Rap music somehow got its start in the medieval taverns of Scotland NOT THE BRONX. Uhhhhh . Here is the theory according to the UKs Telegraph.
According to the theory, Scottish slave owners took the tradition with them to the United States, where it was adopted and developed by slaves, emerging many years later as rap.
Professor Szasz is convinced there is a clear link between this tradition for settling scores in Scotland and rap battles, which were famously portrayed in Eminem’s 2002 movie 8 Mile.
He said: “The Scots have a lengthy tradition of flyting – intense verbal jousting, often laced with vulgarity, that is similar to the dozens that one finds among contemporary inner-city African-American youth.
“Both cultures accord high marks to satire. The skilled use of satire takes this verbal jousting to its ultimate level – one step short of a fist fight.”
This man works at the University of New Mexico. I am not even going to give the man any credibility other than to say that he must be some new fool that may not deserve a degree. They might want to take a trip to Africa or something. Certainly, you can have similarities in other cultures, but Rap music is a phenomenon that started because of man different factors, not ONLY some poetry stuff.

Here are some rumors from my girl Shelz.
I Can’t Feel My Face
Juelz Santana told my folks over at Yoraps that his collaborative project with Lil Wayne is complete. So if you are looking forward to it, you don’t have much longer to wait.

I haven’t heard much about Eric B since he hooked up with those dudes who left Aftermath to put together Drama Family. But it looks like he’s got another project going on; Eric B Special Projects/Music Group. When asked about the company, he had this to say.
“My goal is to build a 21st Century Motown. Motown was an assembly line for hit music. Motown was a true music factory. Product with the Motown name is still viable ten, fifteen, years after its initial release. Most of the hits made a decade ago are still playing on the radio airwaves today.”

Multi-platinum rapper DMX entered a guilty plea today (December 30) before a Phoenix judge on four counts of theft, drug, and animal cruelty charges.
Per the plea agreement, DMX (Earl Simmons) will be sentenced on Friday January 30. The agreement will cover one count of possession of narcotic drugs, a misdemeanor county of animal cruelty, possession of marijuana, and one count of theft.
DMX was extradited back to Phoenix 10 days ago after skipping a scheduled court date.
Sheriff Joe Arpaio offered a $5000 award for the rappers capture, which lead to an unidentified Georgia women revealing DMXs location at producer Scott Storchs Florida mansion.
The animal cruelty charges are the result of a May 9 raid of the rappers Arizona home, where police seized 12 dehydrated and underfed pitbulls.
Although 3 pitbulls were found buried around the property, police declared there was no evidence of dogfighting.
The ID theft charges stem from DMXs April visit to a Scottsdale, Arizona hospital.
Authorities accused the rapper of giving a someone elses name and social security number to avoid paying a $7,500 medical tab.
At press time, DMX is still scheduled to release a Hip-Hop album (Walk With Me Now) and gospel album (Youll Fly With Me Later) in January 2009.
Even a full year after its release, Flo Ridas smash single Low continues to be a cash cow in overseas ringtones for the Miami rapper.
Telstra, Australias largest provider of long-distance and local telephone services, officially recognized Low as the top-selling ringtone of 2008.
The countrys ringtone purchases peaked in 2007 at $50 million.
Although sales were down in 2008, ringtone purchases still grossed $30 million in revenue.
According to Australian Performing Rights Association manager Frank Roveta, Low might be the last of the huge selling ringtone singles.
The novelty of phones being able to play songs for ringtones may be wearing off, he stated.
Flo Ridas Low successfully beat out other blockbuster songs from Pink (So What), Rihanna (Dont Stop the Music), and Leona Lewis (Bleeding Love) to secure the top spot.
To date, Low has exceeded over 1 million ringtones in the U.S. and is ranked by Billboard #1 on its Top 100 Hits of 2008.
Outside of the U.S., the track has hit #1 in Canada, Ireland, Switzerland, Romania, Greece, and Israel.
Additionally, Billboard ranks the song as #23 on its All Time Top 100 list.
Flo Rida is currently planning a Spring 2009 release for his sophomore album R.O.O.T.S. (Routes Of Overcoming the Struggle).
Confirmed producers for the project include J Rock, Doctor Luke, and DJ Montay
Super-producer Timbaland will ring in the New Year with a newly processed $11,450 lien against his mansion, courtesy of an ongoing florist bill dispute.
The White Tulip Florist, a company based in Miami Beach, filed legal papers against Timbaland claiming the star purchased $25,850.00 in trees, flowers, and lights from their organization.
According to the company, these goods were to be used for Christmas decorations, and to date the producer has only paid $14,400.00 of the outstanding bill.
As the result, the White Tulip filed and received court-ordered lien on Timbalands Miami mansion.
Although representatives for the producer could not be reached, early reports allege the Timbaland is vehemently denying the florists claim of non-payment.
The Virginia native has requested the company provide a full wholesale cost disclosure of the alleged outstanding goods.
The lawsuit comes as Timbaland works on Shock Value Volume 2, the follow-up to the platinum 2007 original.
The new LP is tentatively set to feature appearances from Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake, Madonna, Jordin Sparks, Beyonce, and the Jonas Brothers.
Timbaland has also confirmed a reuniting with former protégé Ginuwine.
Their new work is set to appear on the singers sixth studio album, due out in 2009s first quarter.
The super-producers high-profile work for Madonna, Ashlee Simpson, Jennifer Hudson, Jamie Foxx, The Pussycat Dolls, Flo Rida, and New Kids on the Block helped make Timbaland one of the music industrys top earners in 2008.
According to Forbes, the producer grossed $22 million for the calendar year.
“Don’t Hurt Em”
“Na Nu”

“No Equal”
Weve had a pretty good run in 2008. As I look back on all
the songs that I chose to elaborate on inside Sunday Selection some were
bricks and some were bread. As the Auto-Tune continues to haunt us, Im
hoping and praying it finds an untimely death in 09, but for some reason I
dont think it will. This year some artists made it their best friend, while
others chose to remain original. All in all, lets look back on what was
brick and what was bread in 08.
BREAD:
N.E.R.D Everyone
Nose
Even though this song didnt
gain complete mainstream notoriety, everyone nose it was a banger. The remix was hot too and definitely shouted out all the girls standing in the line for the bathroom. You know who you are! Great comeback for N.E.R.D.Everyone Nose – N.E.R.D
Jazmine Sullivan
Need U Bad
Theres something special
about Jazmine Sullivan. Although shes only beginning to get her feet wet, in
time well see what else she has to offer beyond her hits this year Need U
Bad and Bust Your Windows.Need U Bad – Jazmine Sullivan
Usher f/Beyoncé, Lil Wayne
Love In This Club (Remix)
Usher came back on top with
the original for this joint and the remix only reminded you again that Ushers
still got it.
New Kids on The Block
ft/Ne Yo Single
Ok, ok! For all of these guys
to be knocking at 40, their comeback was totally unexpected and crazy! They all
still looked and sounded good, and you whether you want to admit it or not,
this song was bread.
Jennifer Hudson
Spotlight
Its crazy how Jennifer
Hudson gained so much fame before actually releasing her first album. Sometimes
you cant control your destiny and while Spotlight was a hit we really didnt
get to see J Hud enjoy the wave that an artist has when they have a big first
single. When you think of Spotlight youll always remember the tragedy that
followed it. But overall it made its mark in 08.Spotlight – Jennifer Hudson
Beyoncé Single
Ladies (Put a Ring On It) / If I Were a Boy
Both of these songs were
expected to be big hits, and right now as we speak they are still climbing the
charts. Beyoncé has returned, but will I AM .Sasha Fierce do as well as
Beyoncés first and second albums? Guess we have to stay tuned.
Brandy Right Here
(Departed)
Welcome back Brandy! We
missed you. You probably wont go platinum, but were glad to see you again.Right Here (Departed) – Brandy
Ciara f/T Pain Go
Girl
Ci Ci typically come thru
with a few good hits. This is one of them. Hopefully well get an album out of
her in 09.
Nina Sky f/Rick Ross
Curtain Call
Natalie and Nicole have one
of the mellowest sounds Ive heard in years. This joint was a banger and even
if it didnt climb the charts, it was still bread in 08.Curtain Call – Nina Sky featuring Rick Ross
Estelle F/Sean Paul
Come Over
From day one, Estelle caught
your attention. American Boy was a feel good joint, while Come Over comes
behind it with the same momentum. Dont sleep. Estelle got that good good.
Ashanti The Way
That I Love You
Shes the chick so many love
to hate, but Ashanti is guaranteed to give us at least two good singles every
times she emerges and this was one of them. The Way That I Love You – Ashanti
Keri Hilson f/ Lil Wayne
Turning Me On
Sometimes a hit songwriters
attempt to be successful as an artist doesnt always equally measure up. Ill
admit I was skeptical of Ms. Keri to start. Her first single Energy was
decent, but didnt pack a punch. But when I heard Turning Me On I thought, ok
I think shes got something here. The song is a straight banger! Set to drop in
09 too, I think Keri is going to be around for a long time to come.
BRICK:
R Kelly Skin
Three words. Wiggedy, Wiggedy
Wack. This song was a waste of budget.
Pretty Ricky
Knockin Boots 08
One word. Why?
TGT Sex
Nice Try. Tank, Ginuwine and
Tyrese. Stick to your solo careers. It might have seemed like a good idea in
the beginning, but its merely an after thought now.
Monica f/ Ludacris
Still Standing
This song wasnt bad per se,
but it wasnt bread for Monica. Im hoping 09 will mark her return. R&B is
missing you girl.Still Standing – Monica ft Ludacris
Day26 Got Me
Going
Um in five years no one will
remember these guys.
Mariah Carey Bye
Bye (remix)
Mimi got side tracked when
she said I Do to a fella 9 years her junior. Her album had way more potential
than it will be remembered for. Def Jam dropped the ball on this one and so did
she. But I still love you Mi Mi!! Hands down your still one of the greatest.
Ray J Snake in
The Grass
Ray J WTF were you thinking?
Jamie Foxx f/Lil Wayne
Number One
The creation of this song was
another waste of good talent in the same room. Jamie Foxx is the man, but this
joint has no potential of ever reaching number one.Number One – Jamie Foxx ft Lil Wayne
The-Dream f/ Lil Jon
Let Me See That Bootay
The-Dream can do better than
this.
Keri Hilson f/R. Kelly
Shake it Like a Dawg
Again, gotta use those three
words. Wiggedy, Wiggedy Wack! This song should forever just be a leaked track
on the Internet that never ends up as released material.Shake It Like a Dawg – Keri Hilson ft R. Kelly
We had some good ones and
some bad ones in 2008. I cant wait to see what 2009 has to offer!
West Coast rap star E-40 is speaking out regarding his role in a recent shooting, following a sold-out performance at a Denver, Colorado nightclub.
According to his manager, Chaz Hayes, E-40 and his camp were uninvolved in the unfortunate incident at Club Vinyl in Denver on Dec. 27, 2008.
Neither E40 nor anyone traveling with him was in the venue at the time. In fact, E-40 had concluded his performance and been back in the hotel room, Hayes told AllHipHop.com via a statement as he noted the reception the rapper received from his visit.
During his time at the venue, and in fact during the trip to Denver as a whole, he encountered nothing but love and gave nothing but love back. E-40 had a crowd pleasing and peaceful show,” Hayes said.
E-40s statement is the latest development following Saturdays shooting, which occurred at 1:45 a.m. in front of Club Vinyl, as concertgoers were leaving the venue.
One person is currently in critical condition following the shooting, while four other people were released from the hospital after being treated for minor wounds at the Denver Health Medical Center.
At this time, police are continuing to investigate the shooting.
The Denver Post reports that no new information was made available to the public regarding a motive or suspects in the shootings.
Although E-40 certainly regrets that this incident took place, Hayes stated that his client and his camp are unable to control the poor and tragic choices that other adults choose to make.
News of the shooting comes as another mark against Club Vinyl. The club, located at 1082 Broadway in downtown Denver, has been the site of various incidents over the years.
Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams was killed in a drive-by shooting after an altercation two years ago on New Years Eve that took place across the street from Vinyl.
Denver city records reveal that 14 criminal incidents have taken place at Vinyls location from January to November, with three of those cases happening around closing time.
While the East Coast awaits a new crop of emcees to emerge in the national spotlight, the veterans continue to hold down the fort. This year saw mainstays like Nas and Jay-Z continue to make moves on the music and business front. Although several stars didnt release albums, many like Fabolous, 50 Cent, and Jadakiss remained on the national radar through mixtapes and various guest spots.
Even without a unified front due to various cliques and infighting, the East has been able to lay the groundwork this year for anticipated new projects from Jay-Z, 50 Cent, Busta Rhymes, Fabolous, and Jadakiss.
Nas
Nasir Jones kept his name ringing in 2008 with the novel concept of simply making a great album. The first half of the year saw the Queens lyricist polarize the Hip-Hop world by naming his album N***** and dropping a controversial video for the street single Be A N***** Too. Def Jam initially supported the project but pressured Nas to compromise after major distributors such as Walmart threatened to not carry the LP.
Nas relented and simply left the album untitled, utilizing a powerful album cover image of his back whip-scarred into the letter N to symbolize the projects true name. The Untitled album was released in July to near universal praise from critics for Nas exceptional critique of race on economic, historical, and social levels. The positive buzz earned Nas his second consecutive and fourth overall album to debut #1 on Billboard, knocking off the cultural phenomenon that is Tha Carter III. In October, Untitled was certified gold.
Already seventeen years deep, Nas continues to prove elite emcees can remain potent without making juvenile compromises to their art to appease fleeting trends.

Jay-Z
Still riding the success of his return to form on American Gangster, Shawn Carter used most of 2008 to build anticipation for the long-awaited Blueprint 3.
Vacating his president position at Def Jam in December 2007, Jay kicked off 2008 with a memorable headlining performance at the British, normally rock-leaning Glastonbury Festival. The Brooklyn native used the slot to take a pointed jab at outspoken Oasis front man Noel Gallagher, who criticized the Jay-Z selection.
Jay went on to strategically place verses onto most of the big Hip-Hop records this year: Rosss Trilla, Wayne Tha Carter III, T.I.s Paper Trail, and Ludacris Theater of the Mind.
In August, anticipation built further for Blueprint 3 after the summer leak of Jockin Jay-Z, and the announcement that Kanye West would serve as co-executive producer.
On the business end, Jay-Z further lived up to his claim of not being a businessman but a brand all to himself. He finalized a hundred and fifty million joint venture with concert promoter Live Nation to have the organization finance Jays investments and split the profits fifty / fifty. The deal is one of the richest contracts ever given to a musician and gives Jay the distinction of being the first Hip-Hop artist to sign with Live Nation.
In addition, Jay-Z partnered with powerhouse Norwegian producers Stargate to launch a new label, Star-Roc. The company will handle recordings in-house at Jays Manhattan Roc The Mic studio, and sign all new artists to three sixty contracts covering their record sales, endorsements, concert revenue, and other ventures.
The likely most important event this year for the Brooklyn emcee was his marriage to longtime girlfriend Beyonce Knowles. The private ceremony was made public at the end of April, and the new Ms. Carter was seen sporting a five million Lorraine Schwartz-designed wedding ring. For Jay-Z, 2008 was business and politics as usual.

Brooklyn (Go Hard), Jockin Jay-Z
50 Cent
Curtis Jackson again proved hes one of the hardest working artists / moguls in Hip-Hop, first by dethroning Jay-Z on Forbes annual Hip-Hop list with earnings of $150 million.
Southside Jamaicas favorite son lent his brand to TV, film, and video games. In September he co-starred alongside movie legends Robert De Niro and Al Pacino in the crime thriller Righteous Kill. In November he premiered an MTV reality show entitled The Money And The Power. On the gaming front, he finalized his second multi-platform video game in 50 Cent: Blood In The Sand for release in January 2009.
On the international front, 50 is in the process of securing an equity stake in the mining business of billionaire tycoon Patrice Motsepe. Musically, 50 Cent spent the majority of the year laying the groundwork for this fourth studio LP Before I Self-Destruct.
His G Unit camp returned to their underground best with several well received mixtapes in Return Of The Body Snatchers Vol. 1 and Elephant In The Sand. In October, he released the Scott Storch produced Get Up, the lead single for the new album.
Despite several setbacks in the G Unit album flop, high-profile baby momma drama, and the infamous taped Young Buck conversation, 50 Cent shows that even in a slow year, hes still too far ahead for most to compete.
Jim Jones
Two years removed from his biggest hit in We Fly High, Harlems own Jim Jones continues to makes moves on the microphone and behind the scenes. Jimmy kicked off the year with the Dame Dash-hosted Harlems American Gangster. Powered by the lead single Love Me No More, the album / mixtape hit number one on Billboards Top Independent Albums List.
In July, Jones put together a six-man roster and released M.O.B.: The Album, the debut studio LP from his 2006 formed Byrd Gang.
To conclude 2008, Jones hopped on the Ron Browz club smash Pop Champagne, which will also be featured on Jims upcoming fourth album Pray IV Reign (January 2009).
Even with a highly publicized and sometimes violent feud with founding Byrd Gang member Max B still ongoing, Jim Jones has learned in 2008 to put business first.
Standout Songs- Love No More, Pop Champagne
Busta Rhymes
A veteran emcee that will celebrate his twentieth year of releasing music in 2009, Busta Rhymes has been able to bounce back from a public split with Interscope / Aftermath.
Things looked good in early 2008, as Busta released a signature raucous single in Dont Touch Me (Throw Da Water On Em). A memorable all-star remix soon followed featuring The Game, Nas, Spliff Star, Reek Da Villian, and Big Daddy Kane.
Busta built more momentum with the Linkin Park assisted We Made It, which cracked the top fifty on Billboards Pop chart. The song was prominently featured in Madden 09 and served as the theme song for the NBA Western Conference Finals.
The work was stifled momentarily when the Long Island emcee was dropped by Aftermath / Interscope after an alleged heated conversation between Busta and CEO Jimmy Iovine.
Undeterred, Busta closed out the year with the controversial club hit Arab Money. The remix drew the ire of Muslims worldwide for using revered Islamic verses on the nature of Allah in a song emphasizing extravagant materialism. Busta has since apologized and edited the song.
The controversy and consistent musical output has kept Bustas name in the mix throughout 2008, and hell get the chance to capitalize in early 2009 with the release of Back On My B.S..
Standout Songs:
Dont Touch Me (Throw Da Water On Em), Arab Money (Remix)
The Verdict:
While most kept to the usual fair of big money and others lost their identity by following the trends set forth by their protégés, Nas challenged the game with Untitled. Yes the album title was changed but that did not stop him from creating a work of art that not only skillfully tackled the much argued subject matter, but also his added to his legacy.
