Vivendi Entertainment has announced a September 15 release date for the highly anticipated documentary titled Big Pun: The Legacy. The documentary tells the life story of the Grammy nominated rapper, who died from a heart attack due on February 7, 2000 due to obesity. The documentary uses unreleased concert footage, videos and interviews with rappers like Snoop Dogg, DMX, Jim Jones, Method Man, Xzibit and others to tell the story of Big Pun, born Christopher Rios. “I hope that the fans will get a chance to remember their idol while watching the film,” said director Vlad Yudin. “All those who are not entirely familiar with his story will get an opportunity to discover the legend.” A CD release is also planned featuring music from the film, which includes an unreleased track from Big Pun.
Wyclef Jean is using technology to keep in touch with his fan base. The rapper/producer recently recorded remixes to his latest single “More Bottles” with eight winners from his “More Bottles Remix” held on his Twitter page. Wyclef Jean held a contest in which fans submitted “Bubble Tweets” (a message with a video), in hopes of appearing on the remix. Jean invited the eight winners to his Platinum Sound recording studio where they put the vocals down for the upcoming track, which is due to land in stores this August. The songs will also be featured on an upcoming Gangsta Grillz mixtape Wyclef is currently producing with DJ Drama.
Chicago rapper Common has been selected to replace Michael Franti at the Wanderlust Festival in Lake Tahoe, California. Franti and his group Spearhead had to cancel the gig due to an emergency surgery last Thursday (July 23) to remove the singer’s ruptured appendix. Common will perform Saturday night during the Wanderlust Festival, which takes place from Friday (July 31) to Sunday (August 2) and also features Girl Talk, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings and others.
The track listing for Slaughterhouse’s self-titled debut recently hit the Internet. The group, which consists of Joe Budden, Royce Da 5’9, Joell Ortiz and Crooked I, will release their first effort on E1 (formerly Koch). According to Amazon, the album lands in stores on August 11 and features guest appearances by M.O.P., Pharoahe Monch, Fat Man Scoop, Novel and others.
