Hip-Hop Rumors: WHA? Rick Rubin Didn’t Work On Magna Carta?

Rick Rubin is the man. He’s THAT DUDE! He’s that dude so much that Kanye West utilized his talents to pull together Yeezus and it was still bad. Imagine if Rick didn’t put his magic on it! Well, Rick Rubin has been prominently pushed and active in promoting Jay-Z’s new album MCHG, but now it has been revealed that he didn;t work on it! LOL! He’s actually been speaking on the album. It seems like the dream team consists of Timbaland, Pharrell and Swizzy! Rick was just in the room. Peep the scoop from XXL Mag:

“The point of me being in the commercials was that he was filming a documentary and he asked me-I imagine he’s just comfortable talking to me-to come listen to the songs with him and just talk about the songs. Just listen to it and talk about it, and that’s what we did. It was fun.” He went on to divulge what he initially thought of Magna Carta, saying, “I liked what I heard, but it was a little difficult-after just coming from the Kanye sessions-to listen to Jay’s album, because they’re so different. I was in a very alternative and progressive headspace, and Jay’s record is a more traditional hip-hop record.”

This doesn’t matter much to me, but I do feel a bit hoodwinked.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Illseed’s Quickies: Future, Tim Dog, ASAP Rocky

I know some people may be getting sick of Tim Dog, but HEY, I’m getting new information all the time. I’ll update ya. I’m starting to think that Tim Dog is either dead or hiding from everybody. And when I say everybody, I mean everybody. That includes his friends like Kool Keith of Ultra Magnetic. I’ve been told that investigations show that Keith and them have no idea where Tim is and if he’s alive. Also, they weren’t with him when he recorded that new song.

On to the next…FUTURE

So, it looks like Future may have a tough future if there is any truth to the rumors. Now, remember I told you there is a price for safety out there in the West Coast. Pay and you get that pass. Seems like the boy Future may need to pay his dues and fast.

“Sunday night in L.A., they almost got him at Greystone night club. The Crips ended up beating up dude’s security ‘Rasco,’ and the club helped Future to escape.

Future has to pay his hood taxes and he doesn’t want to. He can’t go to Chicago because they’re looking for him out there too.”

ASAP…SLAP…

A$AP Rocky has been getting some flack for apparently slapping fire out of a fan that hit him on the top of his wig piece. Nothing formal has a been announced so I think he’ll be OK, but check the vid.

This was in Sydney, Australia.

Preacher’s Wife Meagan Good Explains That Super Sexy Dress At The BET Awards

After the BET Awards, which was a raucous success for BET, Meagan Good took a bit of a hit in the public eye. The starlet took her sexiness to a whole new level at the show and the social media world pounced! See, Meagan is now married to Sony Pictures Executive and Seventh Day Adventist pastor Devon Franklin and she presented the Best Gospel Artist award at the show Sunday. Meagan explained her position without retreat. See the unedited reply to a twitter follower below.

… That’s the thing Girl- is that I don’t feel convicted about this at all .,my spirit is saddened that our people only know one way to think and process things.. I’m not any less holy because the dress I wore -I may not be who people think I should be -but I’m morphing into exactly who God wants me to be.. My excuse is never “I’m going to do me” and I don’t feel that I need to make an excuse or defend or what I wore .. I know I have a responsibility -and I’m working daily to fulfill the full potential of all God has created me to be.. A dialogue was started about my character, integrity, my walk with God and my Husband -simply based on a dress that I wore.., Of course I’m going to have a reaction to people saying negative things… It’s just sad.. Makes me sad not regretful.. My heart and spirit is always open to whatever my Father would want to share with me… And my spirit tells me to be exactly who I authentically am -because that’s what’s going to reach who I was authentically designed to touch.. people like me who are often misunderstood and told their cut of God’s promise -because they don’t look the role …when God doesn’t care about us “looking the role”..he is always cared about bringing us in -and us being whatever we need to be to bring Those left out in .. And it just makes me sad that us as Christians can’t see beyond our initial reaction and don’t seek God before the attack other brothers and sisters …and never think for one moment that: God knows what he’s doing and he uses everything for his glory .. and he has a plan for every specific situation.. I had intentions on anything .. Merely picked a dress I saw and loved … God knows my heart and that I didn’t do anything wrong .. And he will use even people’s thoughts to bring him glory.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Ace Hood Explains How His Watch Broke Up!

“Daughter love me.”

ace-hood-430

Damn, I was looking at the TV and saw Ace Hood’s watched just go to pieces. And I thought, “Damn, that boy just got the set back of a lifetime!” Remember all the hate he used to get back in the day? With “Bugatti,” he’s back like a MF. But, on national TY…damn. Well, he explained what happened to LA Leakers.

“When you spend a certain amount on a watch, certain things aren’t supposed to happen. My jeweler, I had to fire my jeweler. He’s definitely going through it. I spent $60,000 on that watch, man. I was just as shocked as everybody else was when it did happen. It never happened to any of my other watches or anything. I looked up. I ain’t even know what it was. I figured it was my bracelet. It wasn’t no thing, though.”

Ace continued:

“I ain’t even look at the footage. … For it to happen right then in that moment, I was like, ‘You could have happened anywhere else. I just performed. I just ripped down the stage, everything. But you chose to let it be there.’ That’s how I know the Devil be working. He be working. But we good man.”

When in doubt, blame the Devil.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Why’d “They” Pull The Plug On Jay-Z’s Secret Concert?

According to the NY Post, Jay-Z’s permit for his secret show has been mysteriously denied. It was approved and then later denied. The thing is, this denial isn’t confirmed, but it seems so. See below:

Jay-Z won’t be making a marquee appearance at the Ed Sullivan Theater after all.The city suddenly yanked approval for the mega-rapper’s planned concert Monday atop the Midtown marquee for the “Late Show with David Letterman,’’ sources said.“The mayor’s office approved it, and then just like that, it got denied,” one police source told The Post yesterday.Reps for Jay-Z, Letterman, the city and the NYPD had planned to meet at the “Late Show” offices yesterday to work out concert details. But the meeting was abruptly canceled — and everyone involved was told that the event was now a no-go, sources said. The police source speculated: “It’s because of the holiday weekend. They were concerned about fireworks and terrorism.”Another source suggested that the music gig was cancelled for the same reason given the last time Jay-Z and Letterman tried to plan the event in 2010 but were thwarted.Details about the performance were leaked to The Post beforehand, creating a logistical nightmare for cops given the hordes of fans such an event would draw. The mayor’s office refused to comment, as did Letterman’s people. Jay-Z’s rep didn’t respond to phone and e-mail messages.

CodeBlack: Jeff Clanagan Shares His Rise from Hip Hop Concert Promoter to One of Hollywood’s Most Powerful Producers

Kevin Hart is on fire these days, but that doesn’t mean the funny-man is doing all of the hard work by himself. He’s got a team, led by Codeblack Entertainment’s Jeff Clanagan – a man who got his start as one of Hip Hop’s first concert promoters, and later, Master P’s No Limit Films.

In the last decade, Clanagan has been behind some of black comedy’s most successful specials – including those from Shaquille O’Neal, Mike Epps and Steve Harvey.

As Hart’s new film Let Me Explain hits theaters, New York City radio show “Pillow Talk with Kareem The Dream” caught up with Jeff to talk the new film, to find out more about how Clanagan got his start in the game and how others can get started, too.

Here’s a few snippets from the show:

Jeff Clanagan his relationship with Kevin Hart:

“Our role is we produce the film with Kevin, we’ve been involved since the inception. Everything from the documentary segment in the film that shows him when he travels overseas. I was on the road with him in Canada, I was on the road with him in Europe, so we’re his producing partner. We not only just distribute and market stuff, but we also co-produce with Kevin.”

“I don’t want to put out any numbers, but obviously the last one “Laugh at My Pain”, did really good business. We’re expecting a large turn out. We’re taking a chance with the Fourth of July weekend, which is the biggest weekend of the year, but we’re programming it. Kevin’s hot, and the time is right, I think we’re going to do exceptionally well.”

Jeff on his new partnership with one of Hollywood’s biggest studios, Lionsgate:

“In the past, Codeblack has been primarily focused on the DVD market, and home video market. Our new partnership and relationship with Lionsgate now moves us in a whole other direction where we now focus on theatrical movies. We’re going to do less movies, but higher quality movies. Whether it be through an acquisition or production, you’ll see our business start to change and we’ll start doing a lot more theatrical.

Up until this point, there’s never really been an African American company or division at any of the major studios. The timing was perfect for me to make this move because it now puts me in a position where I’m inside the studio, where I can focus and provide outlets for filmmakers, directors, producers and writers. I can focus on making movies for our market.”

On how he got his start in the business:

“I was a concert promoter for 15 years. I actually started promoting parties while I was in high school. From the entrepreneur standpoint, I’ve always worked to achieve what I wanted. In the ’80s I was one of the first Hip Hop promoters. I did the first NWA tour. I did Def Jam tours, Ready for the World, Def Comedy.

If you know anything about live event promotion, as a concert promoter, you got to wear ten hats. You’ve got to book and negotiate groups, the marketing, street teams. From that standpoint, I developed a lot of skills by necessity.

I wanted to get into the film industry, so I used all my music relationships, and I started doing music videos. That’s how I learned how to produce and I pulled a film director, who was in film school at Berkeley, and I started managing him. His name is Dave Meyers, who went on to be a very big music video director, and now a big commercial director.

From there, I went on to run Master P’s company, No Limit Films, when he was blazing hot. We were the first ones to do the independent movies and the distribution, all in one.”

#NewerRules: 6 Creative Ways To Promote Music In The Future

An album can go platinum without a single fan purchasing it, a music video can be premiered on a building and listening sessions are held in movie theaters. These are from 2013 yet on paper look like they should be from 2023.

While we can’t see into the future we can infer what it’d be from the present. Here are six creative ways to promote music in the future that have not (really) been used.

Limited Edition Phone With Album Preloaded

jasonzedd

Have album preloaded onto custom phone.

Before you scream “Jay-Z’s already doing this” let me elaborate further. This idea would essentially take Jay-Z’s Magna Carta Holy Grail app and transform it into its own edition of a cell phone manufacturer. HTC Jay, Samsung Holy Grail, Apple iHov.

This phone would not simply come with the album preloaded similar to the bloatware from companies preloaded on smartphones. The phone would have custom wallpapers in the phone’s Picture Gallery, an app to stream the artsit’s discography, customizable phone covers and more. The functionality would include getting news updates and songs sent direclty to the phone similar to over-the-air updates of smartphone’s operating systems.

Pop-Up Museum

DSC_0047-e1359827014693

Not entirely sure on how renting out a museum (or section of a museum) works but with the emergence of pop-up shops in hip hop promotions, a pop-up museum of this sort with the album playing would be feasible. But if Jay-Z can debut his album cover at a London cathedral, renting a space to put up crumpled up rhymebook papers and in-studio selfies shouldn’t be too difficult.

The best footage of of any artist is behind the scene video of their creative process when making an album. Kanye’s making of Late Registration for MTV was visceral and are the stuff of legend. What if you could crystallize those moments and shape them into a museum dedicated to all the work put in for the album. Kilo Kish did a variation of this at the Clemente Soto Vélez Cultural and Educational Center in support of her mixtape k+. The walls were plastered with papers of handwritten lyrics, photographs and even projected behind the scene footage.

Reveal Album Details With People On Album In Vine’s.

The video above is not a vine, does not include actual people but is the beginning. There could be a quick snap shot of the album title then quick snapshots of every person involved. Here’s the kicker, the video does not  reveal wht each person’s involvement is. Kanye had 17 different people produce and write on “New Slaves”. Imagine the level of anticipation that would have built if images of Daft Punk, Lupe Fiasco and Kanye West flashed quickly on a Vine with the words “New Slaves” preceding them.

This would appease the instant gratification while additionally creating endless conversations which would strengthen any promotional attempt.

Stream Listening Session To Fans’ Phones

Spacebar-App

Kanye West and Lady Gaga agreed to stream a few of their upcoming shows through this app Spacebar which allows fans to listen to a live concert straight from the mixboard. The app prompts fans to agree to not record the show and Spacebar leaves no archive of the show.

Artists have already begun streaming their albums for free prior to their release on websites. The next step is to stream the album listening session directly on listener’s phones. The technology to provide this exists and what it does is allows for the artist to  stream their listening sessions and connect with fans through the their phone to people with the app at studio quality as opposed to Ustream sessions.

Scavenger Hunt For Projections of QR Codes That Lead To Song Downloads

This idea was inspired by both Lupe Fiasco and the idea of interactive art. With the introduction of the MP3 player and online music outlets allowing fans to pick and choose which songs from an album they prefer to stream and/or buy, the most concise and applicable description of the past decade is the Playlist Generation.

Imagine if an artist sent out coordinates, clues, smoke signals (not really) to locations where QR Codes(new age barcodes) would be projected which can be scanned by cell phone to download a song from the  album. Fans could then choose to either find all the songs (a la Dragonball Z) or pick and choose which they want but downloading music will become an actual event. A feat Jay-Z has said he wanted to create with the Samsung/Magna Carta Holy Grail release.

There’s projectors that cost less than a pair of Yeezy’s so aspiring MC’s can stunt on a budget.

This is not only doable but is an evolution of a previous promotional attempt. Lupe Fiasco projected a QR Code on two buildings in New York City’s Union Square during promotion for his album Lasers and attracted a sizeable crowd.

Video For Each Song on Album Premiered At Movie Theater

timthumb (1)

Video for every song on album that are shown in sequence at a movie theater –like listening session.

Imagine an artist leaking no information about their upcoming album besides track titles (as is the recent trend) and then holding a listening session in a movie theater (Similar to J. Cole’s Born Sinner listening session). Only this time, every song will be shown in its music video form thus revealing the collaborators and producers in dramatic fashion.

The marketing strategy of making a video for every song on an album has been around since 50 Cent decided to do this for his 2005 The Massacre album. In 2013, high definition quality video can be achieved by even the most common digital camera and rappers have taken notice to this advancement in technology with acts like Rick Ross, Wiz Khalifa, Curren$y and others releasing videos at a rate that would make early 00’s rappers seem lazy.
