NBA Player Jason Collins: I’m Gay

(AllHipHop News) The times they are a changing. The NBA has it’s first openly gay, active player — Jason Collins of the Washington Wizards.

In a recent interview with Sports Illustrated, the 34-year old center revealed that he never intended to break the barrier but didn’t want to hide either.

I’m a 34-year-old NBA center. I’m black. And I’m gay.”

He continued, “I didn’t set out to be the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport. But since I am, I’m happy to start the conversation.”

Collins and his twin brother were ranked as the top players in the country and went on to play at Stanford University.

Now that he’s out, do you think more players will follow suit?

Hip-Hop Rumors: A Wrap For Juelz And Kimbella?

These guys have been pretty quiet as of late, but maybe that’s what happens when the reality show scene dries up. But, the word on the street is that Juelz Santana and Kimbella are done. It just occurred to me that Kimbella hasn’t really been seen since her last foray on Love and Hip-Hop NY. Here is what a source told HSK:

“Juelz couldn’t take Kimbella’s nagging anymore — she was tired of his promiscuous ways. He doesn’t think Kimbella is pretty anymore, she’s starting to look like an old hag. He misses Bria.”

And who the hell might be Bria? This is Bria:

And this too.

Yep. Bria Myles is Juelz’s ex as well as his first baby momma. What a lucky guy. Apparently, Bria didn’t nag him the way Kimbella did and he’s over it after three years.

“It’s a real special record,” says Brianna. “It’s my first time doing this kind of record…giving my aspect on certain kind of females who experience these kinds of problems, they let these dudes trick them and lie to them an they sell themselves short.”

Brianna also touched on working with T-Pain “T-Pain is so wild an crazy, you never know what to expect and he’s also very talented , I loved what he did on the record.”

Seems like Brianna left a great impression on T-Pain as well.

“She’s a great artist, dope rapper. Rap doesn’t have a Gender, we’re just basically elevating the whole rap game right now with good lyrics and lyrics that actually make sense right now. She actually has bars.”

Hip-Hop Rumors: Kanye Wants Kim to Stop Reality Shows

This comes as no shocker. Kanye West supposedly wants Kim K. to end the lovefest with reality shows. I guess this has to do primarily with their kid coming, because Kanye has seemingly been cool with the show before. I’ve never watched, but I do believe he’s been on the show. And the one time I did watch, KK did nothing but talk about Kanye and his fashion the whole time. But, now that they have a baby coming, I can imagine that Ye wants no parts of the kid being all on the TV. I know this is probably driving Kim’s mom crazy since she’s looking to get all that gwop selling to the papz and whatever.

Anyway…there’s a lot going on with Kanye. Too much for me to type right now. But a lot.

Surviving Members Of The Beastie Boys To Release Memoir

(AllHipHop News)  Michael “Mike D” Diamond and Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz of the legendary New York Hip-Hop group the Beastie Boys have announced they will be creating a memoir focused on the band’s career. According to The New York Times, the book will be a “multidimensional experience” that features prominent pictures, snarky pop culture references, and contributions from other writers.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees had apparently been in talks about doing a book deal for several years, but the group was focused on the declining health of third member Adam “MCA” Yauch. Yauch died from cancer in May of 2012 at the age of 47.

The currently untitled memoir will be edited by Sacha Jenkins, co-founder of the 1990’s Hip-Hop magazine Ego trip and a creative consultant on The Boondocks television show. Jenkins has also written for Vibe, Rolling Stone, and Spin magazines.

The Beastie book will be published by Random House’s Spiegel & Grau imprint. Spiegel worked with Jay-Z (Decoded), Ta-Nehisi Coates (The Beautiful Struggle), M.K. Asante (Buck), and Wes Moore (The Other Wes Moore) to publish their autobiographies.

Spiegal & Grau plan for the Beastie Boys’ memoir to be an unconventional approach to telling the story of their lives.

“There is a kaleidoscopic frame of reference, and it asks a reader to keep up,” Julie Grau, publisher of Spiegal & Grau, told The Times.

The Beastie Boys’ book is expected to hit bookstores and tablets in the fall of 2015.

Man Responsible for Las Vegas Shootout Indicted; Potentially Facing Death Penalty

(AllHipHop News) A man named Ammar Asim Faruq Harris, accused of shooting up the Vegas strip in February, was extradited to Nevada just a week ago and has now been indicted on murder charges.

Harris was arrested by a fugitive apprehension team of police and FBI agents on Feb. 28 in Studio City, CA, and faces 11 felonies for the Vegas Strip shooting and resulting crash.

Police say that Harris is accused of killing aspiring rapper and pimp Kenny Clutch, born Ken Cherry, after an argument on the at the Aria Hotel and Resort led to fatal shootout in the streets of Las Vegas.

According to an aide of the Clark County District Attorney, Harris was to be returned to Nevada from a Los Angeles County jail by May 10, but Harris was indicted before the end of April and if convicted is facing the death penalty.

The crash on Feb. 21 also killed two people in a taxi, who were struck by Cherry’s car after Harris, a self-described pimp, reportedly fired shots from a Range Rover SUV into Cherry’s Maserati sports car.

The Clark County District Court grand jury also indicted Harris, 27, for robbery and three felony sex assault counts from a 2010 rape case that was thrown out when the victim refused to testify.

Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson is considering the death penalty for the Las Vegas Strip incident, but had not made a decision and was unavailable for comment.

With both the rape and robbery charges alone, Harris is facing a potential 25 years in prison, not including the shooting on the strip that killed the cab driver, 62-year-old Michael Boldon, and the passenger, Sandra Sutton-Wasmund, 48, of Maple Valley, Washington.

Run DMC’s Reverend Run Continues Push for Diabetes Awareness

(AllHipHop News) According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), every 17 seconds someone in the United States is diagnosed with some form of diabetes.

Even more startling, projections from the (ADA) say that by the year 2050, 1 in 3 Americans will suffer from the potentially fatal disease that costs our country over $200 billion each year.

But fear not Hip-Hop fans, ordained Pentecostal minister and avid family man, Rev Run is doing his part to spread awareness about diabetes by taking part in speaking engagements similar to last Sunday’s Detroit Greater Grace Temple Church sermon.

Sponsored by the multi-billion dollar Danish pharmaceutical company, Novo Nordisk, Rev Run has been hitting the road to spread the word  via the “Ask.Screen.Know.” campaign.

Rev Run is looking to tackle the disease that seems to have had a greater impact on African-Americans than other ethnicities and that impacted his own life as Rev Run’s father also battled diabetes .

“Life has given me this opportunity – to educate and empower people at risk for diabetes to get screened.” Rev Run said on the Novo Nordisk website.  “Just the thought of diabetes can make me nervous. But I know I can’t ignore it. And knowledge is power. That’s why I’ve talked to my doctor about my risk for diabetes.”

According to the Office of Minority Health, a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, African-Americans are twice as likely to be diagnosed with diabetes as non-Hispanic whites.

In addition, they are more likely to suffer complications from diabetes, such as end-stage renal disease and lower extremity amputations.

Although African-Americans have the same or lower rate of high cholesterol as their non-Hispanic white counterparts, they are more likely to have high blood pressure.

“If you don’t get screened, you don’t know. What you don’t know, you cannot fix,” Rev Run told The Detroit News.

Take a look at Rev Run’s  message to fans and those at risk of facing diabetes below, and for more information visit: Ask.Screen.Know.com

ASK

At this stage in my life, I had to ask myself the tough questions about diabetes. My dad had it, and, just like millions of Americans, I’m at risk for the disease. I am the man I am today because of my dad. He inspired my music, he inspired me to be a better father, and his fight with diabetes inspired me to take responsibility for my health. That’s why I’m working with Novo Nordisk on theAsk.Screen.Know. campaign. I’m asking people to be accountable for their health — ask the questions, listen up, and take action.

SCREEN

Life has given me this opportunity – to educate and empower people at risk for diabetes to get screened.

Just the thought of diabetes can make me nervous. But I know I can’t ignore it. And knowledge is power. That’s why I’ve talked to my doctor about my risk for diabetes.

KNOW

You have to know if you’re at risk. And you can’t know if you don’t ask. Take the first step by learning more and getting screened. I know I’m at risk for diabetes and I’m working on it. I’m trying to eat better. I make time to exercise, and I’m doing my best to lose a few pounds.

My kids, my wife, my fans, and my friends are all watching out for me, too. Knowing that I have their support gives me the strength and motivation to take responsibility for my health.

Now that I know, I can continue on a path to better health.
