Claressa Shields vented online after losing the 2025 BET Sportswoman of the Year award to Angel Reese, calling out critics, defending her résumé and shutting down a wild rumor involving Remy Ma.
The boxing champ took to Twitter shortly after the results aired.
“Still don’t know how I didn’t win the Sportswoman of the Year for the @betawards,” she wrote. “But Congrats to Angel Reese and all the other Nominees. I just thought accolades mattered.”
Shields, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and multi-division world champion clarified that her frustration wasn’t aimed at Reese but at the award process itself.
“Ain’t nobody saying Angel Reese don’t have accolades or she not good…. I’m saying I thought the person with ‘THE MOST’ accolades & accomplishments would win the Award. I’m team Angel Reese!”

When a Twitter user chimed in to defend Reese’s accomplishments, Shields responded, “Yes she does but who has more accolades…. More success in their field. Please use google before responding.”
Things escalated when someone joked that Remy Ma—estranged wife of Papoose, Shields’ boyfriend—used her influence to sway the outcome.
“Get yo goofy ass off my s###,” Shields fired back. “You sound dumb. It’s a popularity contest dumb ass. I won an ESPY! People actually vote slow ass. This is ain’t that.”

Despite the online back-and-forth, Claressa Shields made it clear she wasn’t bitter toward Angel Reese.
“I’m not joining in on any hate train when it comes to Angle Reese, I have mad respect for her and all the other female athletes that excel in their sport. As for my earlier comments I am allowed to express my feelings, I was shocked I didn’t win, I was under the impression the category was graded on accolades of your sport. It’s ok to be a competitor.”

Reese didn’t directly respond to the drama but reposted a cryptic tweet that read, “Always remain humble. One minute in life you can be up, one minute you can be down life comes in seasons. Don’t let that go over your head.”
