Kobe Bryant and LeBron James

Non Hip-Hop Rumors: Could The 2012 Olympic Basketball Team Beat The 1992 Dream Team? Kobe And LeBron Think So!

Kobe Bryant caught a firestorm of flack after he admitted in a recent interview that he thought that the 2012 Olympic team could beat the brakes off of the 1992 Dream Team. Now, LeBron James has added in his two cents and agrees with his teammate Kobe, that they would beat the team that made headlines 20 years ago as the best team to ever play together. Check out what Lebron said below:

“Kobe is a teammate of mine, and I support him,” said LeBron. “As a competitor, you never want to say that you will lose, no matter who you’re going against. The ’92 Dream Team paved the way for all of us. The set a standard in the Olympics and basketball in general that’s very high. As a competitor and as a fan of those guys you try to live up to that. You try to be better than them so people start talking about your team, the 2012 team. So we understand what they did for our game, but we also are big time competitors as well. So if we had an opportunity to play them, in a game, we feel like we would win too.”

The 1992 team was the first U.S. Basketball team to consist of active NBA players, and was made up of 11 future Hall of Famers, including Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Patrick Ewing, Charles Barkley, Scottie Pippen, Karl Malone, David Robinson, John Stockton, Clyde Drexler, Chris Mullin, and legendary coach, Chuck Daly.

The 2012 USA Basketball team is made up of Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Durant, Tyson Chandler, Anthony Davis, James Harden, Andre Iguodala, Kevin Love, Chris Paul, Russell Westbrook, Deron Williams, and coach, Mike Krzvzewski.

So, which squad do you think would win if there was a way to time travel and pit these two teams against each other?

Make sure you check out the USA Basketball team’s first Olympic game against France tomorrow (July 29).

  • A loss for the 1992 Dream , meant winning by 25 pts as opposed to 45-80. They swept the Olympics, as a team. Big names don’t make a team…teamwork does.

the international players 20 years ago were a lot worse than they are now. There were only 6 NBA players in 92 that played in the Olympics not on team USA. Currently there are approximately 40 this year. in the last 20 years the rest of the world has gotten better. that has to be taken into consideration.

      • Indeed, which means their record will never be duplicated. Neither will the team spirit. Today’s athlete is all about them, not the team.

  • 2012 could definitely beat the dream team.

    • toreal

      You must smoke crack?

    • GregSki86

      Delusional ass nigga

  • AK

the competition international wise has went up dramatically just the last 10 years, the dream team wouldnt have blown those games out like that in todays basketball. As far as what team’s better thats something will never know cause they cant play each other without a time machine. They should all sit down for a game in 2k with everyone controlling their own player and settle it haha

    • True point, but based on their contemporaries, the 2012 team will have to do the same & I doubt they will. Competition has stepped it up a notch, along with the talent, so things are equal.

Malone, Bird, Jordan, Magic, Ewing, Barkley, Pippen, Robinson, Malone / Stockton, Drexler, etc., all had mad experience, which will played a factor. IMHO

  • ccwaterbound32

sydney you really are on that soft arent you?

  • Hell No! The Dream Team had players that could actually play defense.

    • therealjjohnson

Jordan and Pippen where their only perimeter defenders. Who else could guard the wings?

  • Jahb1911

This team can’t even beat the 08 team.. Can’t we stop the madness with dream team comparisons.. Shesh..

  • WRONG ANSWER NIGGA!!!!!!! @ LEBRON

  • HipHopStalker

Like Jordan said. Not only could they play defense when has there ever been a team that ended up having 11 out of 12 players become hall of famers. Not all stars but Hall of famers ? Christian lattener was the only one to not make it in and he almost got his spot taken by a young Shaq while he was at LSU

    • TupacLives

christian laettner took Isiahs spot cuz most of the people on the team had beef with him. Jordan said if Isiah played he wouldn’t.

    • therealjjohnson

But you are looking at the totality of their careers…the argument is in the year 1992 specifically could those players beat the current team.

      • Yep!
“Off the defender, off the back board, three bounces…nothing but net!”
        >> Jordan / Bird McDonald’s commercial.

  • how about they win 1st *shrugs* fake ass espn….

Keep in mind we are not talking about the 1992 team in their primes. we are talking about them in 1992. Bird had back problems and didnt even play again. Magic didnt even play in the NBA that year. Jordan was still in his prime, Barkley was on the end of his prime. These guys not are bigger, faster, and stronger.

Look that the winner of the 92 Olympics in the 100m dash. The winning time would not qualify for the finals now. Its not taking anything away from past greats but our bodies, training, supplements, conditioning, style of play has changed over the last 20 years.

There is an answer for every player on the 92 team with the exception of Robinson and Jordan with the current team. You can argue that Joran and Kobe would go head to head. (not saying Kobe is better than Jordan)

I think people are looking at the entire carreer of the 92 team vs this team and not the 1992 year specifically. Not sure who would win but it would not be blow out like some suggest.

Who would Latener check? Who would Chris mullin check? Is drexler better than Kobe? Lebron James is the same size as carl Malone but moves like a PG. Will Scottie pippen lock down Durant? If so then whos gonna check Melo? Id take CP3 over the 1992 version of stockton. See what im saying? Its debatable. not a given.

    • Most of the players on the dream team weren’t the biggest, fastest, or strongest even in their prime, yet they still became legends. Most of the players on the dream team lead their respective teams to the finals in the following years, even on the downside of their prime. The current teams basketball IQ doesn’t begin to compare to that of the dream team. Chris Paul may beat John Stockton in a game of one-on-one, but would you really rather CP3 running your offense than John Stockton or Magic? The dream team’s advantage is in the paint. You can’t depend on one mismatch on the perimeter when you have to worry about 3 problems inside

    • Magic could play PG or center.

    • Bird could still shoot ya’ eyes out!

      • therealjjohnson

bird could barley move because of his bad back. he sat out most of the games. the 1992 bird would not be effective at all against the current players in that state.

  • Bumpy Johnson

Lebron would just say “im taking my talents to the 92′ Dream team” after not beating them and getting shamefully beat everytime. He is acting like he is competitive

  • verywellingdowd

2012 is getting shut down by defense. Malone, Barkley, and Ewing got the paint on lock. Bird, Stockton and Mullin are on the wings. Kobe and Lebron might come off but Melo would get smothered. The Dream Team takes this, taking Team 2012’s heart in the process after a meltdown by 2012 much like The Thunder’s meltdown in this years finals.

  • hoeyuno

I may be old school and might not be educated enough on current basketball stars but when the nba we’re aloud to play in the 92 olympics it was huge.

  • mike malarkey

and coach, Mike Krzvzewski. smh damn sydney lace.
