Dark Skinned J. Cole May Not Have Been As Successful According to J. Cole

(AllHipHop News) Light-skinned Jermaine believes we are still mentally shackled to the idea that “light skin is better.”

In an interview with BET.com, J. Cole spoke on how race affects the success of himself and President Barack Obama:

Barack Obama would not be President if he were dark skin. You know what I mean? That’s just the truth.  I might not be as successful as I am now if I was dark skin. I’m not saying that for sure, I’m still as talented as I am and Obama is still as smart as he is, but it’s just a sad truth…

Cole framed his comment with a story of a recent run in with the law in New York City’s Time Square. According to Cole, he was stopped by police while driving because the officers believed his front window was too tinted.  Cole even hinted at ulterior motives of the the police during the stop:

I had my hat low and I think I was looking “suspicious” just as a Black man with my brim low, when I was really just trying to cover my face. They came to my window, pulled me over. I feel like if I was a white man driving, they wouldn’t question me about my tints. They told me to roll down my back window; they look in my car as if they’re looking for something. I feel like that was the real thing, they were trying to catch somebody slipping.

  • Dubz

I agree with him on that Obama reference. The darker you are the more thuggish you look…that is the mindset of majority of white america.

    • RichFromBX

right, because black people themselves don’t give each other sh!t on the whole dark skin/light skin thing…

      • NEWSKULL

        Well Said!

      • MindFire

Are you saying that Black people don’t care about dark/light skin?

      • RichFromBX

sarcasm – I’m saying that black do care

      • MindFire

(Claude from Family Guy voice) Awwww you said they don’t care when they do cuz its funny lol….ohhh

      • #SchoolDaze

    • Poof

Right cuz black people dont do the same shit, right?

If you’re darker you’re more “masculine”, right? “lightskin niggas is soft”, right?

As far as J. Cole, stop it.

Kanye West, Kendrick, Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, DMX, 2pac, Biggie, Rick Ross, Meek. Scarface etc?

Thought so. Stop trying be the victim. Its not slavery days. Yes, i’m black.

      • Dubz

I agree we (Black people) use the victim card to much…but if you don’t think there is a problem then you are blind or naive. If Obama was darker he would not be president. Dark skin black people scare white people. That is something you can see everyday. I don’t use that and cry and complain…doesn’t mean I ignore it either.

    • acapwn

Where are you gettin that from? You represent all the white people out there, so you can speak on it? That’s really ignorant.

      • Dubz

You can look back at the study they did before Barack 1st term….they interviewed over 400 students and gave them different pictures of Barack and asked “Which Barack are you most comfortable with” Picture of him light and dark and they pick the lighter version. I can’t post the link here.

    • NEWSKULL

I mean…I believe that’s your view not “white America” … My guess is “thuggish” means “threatening” to you…Who in his right mind can make a relationship between skin color and behavior?… I will go more for physical traits than skin color…

Kendrick Lamar doesn’t scream “thuggish”… But Mike Tyson does although his skin is lighter… shit even Mark Wahlberg look more “thuggish” than Kendrick and he is white…
now if we are talking marketability, skin color is one of the factor but it is not as important as your talent and your personality… if Gunplay could spit like J Cole, he still wouldn’t sell shiznit!!!… cauz he is “thug-dopefiend-ish”

now I don’t believe in that subconscious stuff… what is aesthetic is aesthetic… personally I will pick a red apple over a green one and I will chose a Gabrielle Union over a Nicki Minaj….

  • when the interviewer asked about kendrick using his govt name, he replied no comment…..

  • jacksjus

Kanye is dark skinned and way more successful. J. Cole sounds ridiculous when comparing himself to Obama.

    • Ready Owens

If Kanye is dark skinned then what in the world do you call Akon?

      • jacksjus

Don’t scrutinize the point. By the way, Akon is far more successful too.

      • Ready Owens

The point is that Kanye isn’t dark skinned. Akon is what one would consider a dark skinned person so…stop reaching. There is plenty of truth to what light skinned Jermaine said.

      • jacksjus

The point is he’s 5 shades darker than J. Cole. Again you’re missing the point and you wanna talk reaching. FOH!

      • John Q. Public

So if kanye isn’t dark skinned but we know he aint light skinned… what is he?

    • MindFire

He’s not comparing himself to Obama…he’s using two examples himself as one of them…and exceptions to a rule are still exceptions to a RULE…overwhelmingly, light skinned people are accepted, sought after, and privileged more than dark skinned people…its obvious

      • DeeWilli_85

Im not the Darkest brotha. Milk chocolate myself. But by now it should be known that it is no accident, that lighter complected Black people appear more often in popular media as opposed to our darker skinned brothers and sisters. Soledad O’ Brien, light of complexion said the same thing.

      • I remember stepping to Jet magazine about only having light chicks on the cover back in 1990.

    • j_pullia

I think you missed the entire point. This is not absolute, just more often than not. There are by far more successful light skinned blacks than dark skin blacks. This is a fact! Why So? Think before you answer that. Im gonna show you why you are still a slave.

  • just_some_bastard #ALCOHOLIC

I think as a whole we focus too much on skin color and tone. I don’t agree with Cole here because there is many examples of dark skinned people being successful in whatever field they are in.

    • Dubz

I think he is right when it comes to being President….but everything else not so much.

      • jacksjus

That’s not true at all. It has nothing to do with Obama’s complexion as much as it does the type of brother that he is and how he carries himself. Malcolm X was also a light-skinned brother but was far too militant or problack. Him being married to a Black woman also refutes that claim. I may have agreed had he had a White wife.

      • Dubz

Just ask Herman Cain and Alan Keyes how hard it is to become President. We were so desperate at one time we even named Bill Clinton the first black president.

      • John Q. Public

herman cain and alan keyes had a hard time becoming president bcuz they are idiots

      • Dubz

Herman Cain had more Republican values then Mitt Romney. I think the Tea Party are idiots as well…but if you look at what it is they stand for and then he would have been their guy over Mitt Romney….Alan Keyes worked with Ronald Regan (a favorite among Republicans) and didn’t get the votes needed…Colin Powell would have gotten the Republican vote if he put his name out there….but he is light skinned though.

      • John Q. Public

Herman Cain fucked it up for himself when he forgot what Libya was… plus his political adds were so over the top they were laughable. He was a cartoon, wit his cowboy hat too

      • Dubz

Sara Palin said she can see Russia from Alaska….they all say dumb stuff from time to time….Barack said he visited 57 states…they all make mistakes when a mic is in their face.

      • True, what matters is that they get their handler’s policies correctly implemented on the mindless masses.

    • acapwn

I agree. Plenty of successful rappers with dark skin. He needs to fix his mental about this.

      • j_pullia

How many successful women are dark? This colorism things affects black women far more than men

      • acapwn

I can name a few right off the top of my head…

Oprah, Sheryl Swoopes, Toni Braxton, Condoleeza Rice, Grace Jones, Lauryn Hill, Cicely Tyson, Yolanda Adams. I could go on and on..

      • j_pullia

1st of all, all of those women aren’t dark. You need to know what dark is 1st! 2nd, half those women are primarily used in black genres only. 3rd, try contrasting that number of so called dark women to the number of lighter women and see what you come up with. This nigga said Grace Jones. LMFAO!!! She was the only one from her era and maybe Whoopi. Damn, you had to go waayyy back.

      • j_pullia

Sheryl Swoopes is an athlete and still isn’t dark. This doesn’t apply to athletes. Athleticism is an advantage in itself.

  • FREEfromslavery

white people trained us black amerikkkans over the centuries to divide our race into having light skin and dark skin complexes. it is a scar that has never healed in our community. is it some dark skinned people who break through this racial cycle, sure. sometimes true talent and skill cant be denied. your living in a fantasy world if you think light skinned people havent had a clear cut advantage. the job force, entertainment, and sports pretty much tell the story. yall know damn well that whitey was not about to let some ashy black ass negro become president over a smooth, wavy haired light skinned negro. this will always be the case until black people hit the reset button and start thinking for themselves and get off the white mans nutsack.

    • j_pullia

No one could have said it better! You’re absolutely right!

      • FREEfromslavery

j_pullia i appreciate your response and glad to see someone else in this lost world has common sense towards a problem that has gone on for too long.

  • MrNoName2K

    in a way..

  • John Q. Public

Obama being darker or lighter would not matter. The same ppl who voted for him would vote for him and ppl who hate him would still hate him. A lot of ppl hate him right now and that list would not be any bigger if he was darker skinned. If u got a problem with dark skinned vs light skinned, u prolly got a problem with a black president no matter the shade.

    • JerZeBoy

Exactly! WTF sense does it make how dark? That’s like saying if Faat Joe was a darker Latino he wouldn’t have made it so far…….I someone is racist they aren’t going to vote orlike you period.

The sad truth is the darker you are the more of a threat you are to society. The cats you see in prison movies never look like Boris Kojoe. The tend to look like deebo

These blogs get paid to see how many niggas sit and debate some shit that’s relevant to ones life. Stop commenting and feeding in to this racist bs they have no choice but to reach for another “black problem” to write about

  • Wavpin

    truth …

  • Rakim, Pac, and BIG weren’t light skinned, yet they are widely considered to be the greatest the world has ever seen in Hip Hop. It’s all about being true to yourself. When you’re true, your complexion won’t prevent you from excelling and reaching YOUR greatness.
