Macklemore Says Kendrick Lamar’s “Good Kid, Maad City” Should Win Rap Album Of The Year

(AllHipHop News) An artists probably cannot get a better endorsement for winning an award than having one of his fellow nominees announce that their work was the best. That appears to be the case with Kendrick Lamar’s nomination for the “Rap Album of the Year” Grammy.

Kendrick’s 2012 critically acclaimed major label debut album good kid, m.A.A.d. city is up against projects from Jay Z, Drake, Kanye West, and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, and according to Macklemore, K. Dot should take home the trophy.

“In terms of [that category], I think it should go to Kendrick,” Macklemore shared with The Source. “I’m not trying to compare albums; I think you can make an argument for both. With that being said, I am a huge supporter of what Kendrick does. And because of that, I would love to win in a different category. We obviously had massive success on commercial radio, and I think that, in ways, The Heist was a bigger album, but Kendrick has a better rap album.”

Macklemore made the cover of The Source’s current issue. The publication named the Seattle-based rapper as its “Man of the Year.” While he has earned that title from the long running Hip Hop magazine, Macklemore expresses his belief that rap fans may not be too accepting of his The Heist taking the rap album Grammy over Kendrick’s GKMC.

Macklemore_The_Source

“We’re up against Kendrick, who made a phenomenal album. If we win a Grammy for Best Rap Album, Hip Hop is going to be heated,” states Macklemore.

Besides facing off in the best rap album category, Mack and K. Dot will also compete for the coveted “Best New Artist” and “Album of the Year” awards as well.

The Source‘s January 2014 issue featuring the cover story with Macklemore is available now.

I don’t even like the fact he’s labeled hip hop..

All blacks are brain washed to say i’m not mad cause he is white and
rapping..think about it if slavery never happened we would be in
Egypt/Africa making hiphop and rap, so today if you did say i don’t

        this NEW WORLD.
Listen to me man i have traveled all around the world
and can you guess what type of music and the only type of music they do
in these foreign country’s HIPHOP AND RAP….but they hate us all i am saying is think about it.

      • Jared

I’ve traveled myself but I did not say anything about his skin color nor do I care about his skin color for that matter. His music is corny to me that’s all. He is not the first rapper to talk about what he talks about. I think Nas could do amuch better job anyway.

      • P€OpLé hAte Me

True i don’t care about his skin color at all either i just want to make people think a little deeper in life in general but Eminem is one of my favorite rapper’s top 5 maybe even 3.Mack is actually Irish and if you listen close to his music you can hear the accent i believe that is another reason why his music sound’s corny besides the message.

  • ItGoesDownINtheDM

lets be honest black hip hop fans will be mad lol … but as far as impact macklemoore def killed the game … kendrick killed to but using the same forumla thats been used since snoop was first introduced into the game … and thats come from under that jimmy iovine dr dre umbrella …. macklemoore altho musically his stuff is more mainstream he also impacted the industry in away that is new and fresh wether it be the videos to the actual song concepts to the way he rolled his project out … the entire package …. we might be dissappointed but if he gets that award imo he def deserves it …. either 1 album of the year or best new artist …

    • Guest

Hell nah I completly disagree with your view that macklemore should get the awards, GKMC annihilates the heist from every angle unless we’re looking at it from a commercial viewpoint and the way you degraded kendrick lamar rather falsely and inaccurately to make macklemore appear superior is laughable, macklemores music appeals to a demographic that isn’t neccesarily a majority of hiphop fans, I’m sure even you know that.

    • Lil B’s 13th Disciple

Hell nah, I completely disagree with your view that Macklemore should get the award, GKMC annihilates the heist from every angle, unless we’re looking at it from the comericial viewpoint. The way you degraded kendrick lamar to make Macklemore appear a superior MC is laughable, Macklemore’s music appeals to a demographic in which majority of it does not consist of hiphop fan, thats one of the reasons and a significant factor as to why his career received such a phenomenal catalyst to propel him and ryan lewis towards success, Im sure even you know that bruh.

    • Truth Powell

How did he kill the game? Sure I see him all over magazines but he only gets played on Pop mainstream radio, not the urban stations down here and I’ve never heard any real kids say they’re a fan. Its all media created hype.
No one that’s a real hiphopper or from any kind of hoodish enviorment(that isn’t in the industry ;)) is a fan of this cat. If he announced his retirement today and never made another record again no one would care.

      • Jonathan Bacher

maybe because he has no label backing ?

  • pauleyPee

I think that some of Macklemoore’s work is pretty good… But not “goosebump” good. Kendrick Lamar’s album was/is “goosebump” good. Drake’s album has “goosebump” moments… Same with Jay-Z’s. But true, Macklemoore’s album was a commercial success. But we also know that it was the commercial success that it was because aside from it being of what consensus says is good quality, he’s the prototypical white guy. I’m not mad at that at all. It’s not his fault he’s white – and that shouldn’t be a handicap, per se, anyway. But we should always consider race when having debates that concern urban music and commercial success.

Bottom line: Kendrick Lamar had probably the best rap album (though I really thought Drake’s album was a success)… He should take that category. Best new artist? That probably should go to Kendrick Lamar, too, but not a chance. Macklemoore should get a spot in his mancave ready for that trophy.

    • hoeyuno

      Nice unbiased comment.

      • pauleyPee

Biased? All Kendrick Lamar got out of me was a month of objective listening. I’m not a fanboy, dude. I’m as objective as they come.

    • Dubz

I don’t understand how people can call the Drake album “hip hop” but then say Macklemore’s album isn’t hip hop?

      • pauleyPee

I don’t understand how people tell anyone of any color that because what they do is not what has necessarily been done traditionally, it’s not hip-hop. That’s an even better observation.

      • P€OpLé hAte Me

yea i agree with that i find it weird that thank me later and take care were hot but this nwts shit was ass i don’t know what to call that shit like some hipster rnb love rap crap, worse album of his career.he should stick with his old writer’s cause they all have writer’s.

    • ItGoesDownINtheDM

so why didnt mack miller or if you wanna go more commecial appealing why didnt hoody allen blow lol ijs its not always about color but not saying it doesnt factor in … but its not the end all be all .. there other factors that have to surround that “color” in order to reach those levels of success

      • pauleyPee

Why are you asking me why those artists’ careers didn’t take off? As if I said “if you’re a white rapper, your viability was built-in from birth”. I think I was pretty clear in what I said – and what I didn’t say.

In fairness to Mac Miller, what the fu** are you talking about? In addition to his own respectable, albeit young, body of work, he was just the feature on Arianna Grande’s 2x platinum single “The Way”.

  • Reblogged this on HUEY mix wit RILEY.

  • BibatheDiva

I admire Macklemore’s humility and appreciation of true hip-hop culture. Kendrick should win Best Rap Album, Lord willing and the creek don’t rise.

  • ladynamor

2013 was the year Corporate America tried to change the color of Hip Hop. We get Obama, they get Hip Hop. Or so they thought. They shoved all kinds of anglo rappers down our throats and had plenty of Uncle Tom’s to back that “movement”. It is what it is, call me what you want. The industry is on some fu(k black people sh!t, and so are the white kid fans that used to support it. We are polarized, period.

    • RichFromBX

what white rappers were shoved down you’re throat in 2013? This is dude and Em were the only white rappers that made any serious noise in 2013 and maybe Mac Miller but he did his thing strictly independent.

      • atlantahiphopshop

are you kidding? they pushed action bronson, mgk, yallawolf, iggy azalea, kreayshawn, aesap rock, asher roth, macmiller, even miley cyrus was rapping. need more?

      • Don’t forget Riff Raff.

      • RichFromBX

everyone should forget Riff Raff and I wouldn’t say that dude was receiving a major label push to be a star in the game

      • P€OpLé hAte Me

you should feel like a racist for even mentioning riff raff seriously that’s just a mercy shout out man.

      • stackzscrilla

They even tried to toss Bieber into the Pyrex jar. This dude had a 16 and said Ni33a. I guess he thought he had a pass since he was kickin’ it real tuff like with LiL Twist from YMCMB

      • P€OpLé hAte Me

        ahahahahahahhahaah lmfao true

      • RichFromBX

Mac, Action (both independent with no major label support) and Yela all have the respect of real artist so they shouldn’t even be in the conversation and no one you mentioned has had a real success, may be a song that was a little hot but nothing that would be a white washing of hip hop – also, if the artist pool in general wasn’t so weak there wouldn’t be room for anyone to come in.

Future, Keef, Trinidad James, Tyler, Joey BadAss, J Cole, Kendrick, ASAP Rocky, 2 Chainz and many more had bigger years than of those people you named combined…

      • atlantahiphopshop

        You said:

Mac, Action (both independent with no major label support) and Yela all
have the respect of real artist so they shouldn’t even be in the
        conversation

Speak for yourself. People I know see right through these dudes and don’t respect them lyrically at all. What NEW have they bought to hip hop? They are clones of previously successful black rappers. I don’t care what you or they say, ALL OF THEM have an advantage of being white in today’s polarized society. The fact that Keef and Kendrick did better than most of the wiggers just shows that the major label agenda didn’t work. And Mac is major label. Jews hiding behind him funneling BIG money. Rich from BX? Yeah right. You are some white dude from the mid west, stop it.

      • P€OpLé hAte Me

True man action brons is a wash up of wutang mac and yela are eminem wanna be’s with a little bit of wigger juice

      • P€OpLé hAte Me

macmiller is lame dude the only fully white rapper i respect and is inspired by is eminem end of story every other white rapper act’s like a wigger em is em he can wear a du-rag and J’s and it work’s because you know that’S who he is and who he was man he doesn’t try hard it’s just him….mack’s music to me just don’t click im sorry but rap and gay just don’t mix man thats some wierd shit and he put’s it out there in his music but maybe that just his life and who he is.

      • RichFromBX

if Em is the only white rapper you’re inspired by then you’re a hack – you need to check R.A, Apathy, Celph Titled, Action, Ill Bill, Goretex and most of all, Vinny Paz…those are the guys I thought of when it was said that white rappers were being push down that chicks throat because none of those dudes weren’t getting any type of push…as far as Mac, check the joint he did on ’80 Blocks from Tiffany pt 2’…I wasn’t feeling that dude at first but the joint he did on there changed my mind.

      • P€OpLé hAte Me

The verse on 80 block’s was weak man the song in general was wack Megan Good come on man, but i have heard some of action bronson to me he is better than mac miller but he does sound like a missing member from the Wu-Tang Clan you can’t lie about that, mac miller came out young man he still need’s to grow i’ll check out the others you mentioned.

    • P€OpLé hAte Me

yea i agree man.but that shit won’t last give them grammy’s it might.

    • P€OpLé hAte Me

  • stackzscrilla

Macklemore really needs to fallback and stay in his own lane. This dude is nothing close to Hip-Hop. He got shine in 2013 but we are now in 2014 with a fresh perspective on the culture. No hate or shade tossed his way but this dude is one of many reasons why hip-hop is in the state of decay.

    • Jonathan Bacher

Not really. Its the rappers without substance doing that.

      • stackzscrilla

I can half halfheartedly agree with you on many levels but to point the finger at all hip-hop artist is preposterous. There is a sound, style and lane for each listener. The audience is being fed by the machine to dumb down the culture. It’s no longer about lyrical content in the modern generation of hip-hop. It’s about catchy hooks, beats that slap and swag. Macklemore is gimmick and reminds me of a Bourgeoisie version of Riff Raff. #HANGITUP.

      • atlantahiphopshop

Dont forget image and the ability to relate to the stans based on your culture, story etc. “Hey he looks, talks and acts like me, and he can rap”theory.

      • P€OpLé hAte Me

yea the one’s who say hey i can make money out of this rapping thing i’m gonna go make a track today, they have no passion there favorite rapper’s were like soldier boy make’s me sick.

there are plenty of other reasons that can be named before you get to this guy…

      • stackzscrilla

Pop off… Name a couple then. Enlighten me?

      • RichFromBX

Keef and Trinidad James for starters…

      • P€OpLé hAte Me

hell yea they are horrible man..

    • P€OpLé hAte Me

That’s exactly what i mean it shouldn’t be called hiphop-rap to me it sounds like hippy-grove tunes.

      • stackzscrilla

Hippy grove tunes huh? You a clown. Hip-Hop will forever be the birth of the term Rap or Rapper.

      • P€OpLé hAte Me

If i’m correct this discussion is about Macklemore right….so before you jump the gun on me take the time to read the comment’s i posted to you i know you have read atleast 3 or 4 from me directly to you OOk……..finally my point was Macklemores music sound’s like hippy-grove tunes it should not be called hiphop or rap i was agreeing with you, please don’t be a typical black guy and attack me cause i’m black…

It sounds like your trying to turn this into a Black and White thing my G. New World (My nuts). Macklemore is not that dude! He had his moment now it’s time for him to take a long nap.

      • P€OpLé hAte Me

Nope just want you to think a bit deeper about the root of how and why this is all tide up like this in the world we live in now.

  • hoeyuno

When has real hip hop gave a fucc about the grammys?..really?? Mainstream rap music isn’t selling so this is them with a different formula..who cares. doesn’t effect the core….I think if anything people should be opening up to the talent the northwest has to offer.

    • P€OpLé hAte Me

Lol doesn’t respect the core that doesn’t make since man i think you mean doesn’t effect the artist you like cause you like that artist do you know what winning a grammy does to one’s carrier if Kendrick or Mack win they will be a staple in the game bro they will have so many more song writer’s and beat maker’s bring them more material, company’s will be trying to sponsor them for there products and there fan base will grow because of that man the core is dying man.

    • P€OpLé hAte Me

Im not a fan either but, exactly he does respect it and real hip hop is about rapping about your life

  • i’mreloaded!

I haven’t heard too much of Macklemore’s music except the Thrift Shop song bcuz my son liked that song. But from what I have heard he has his own lane in the hip hop game. He’s not a pure lyricist or anything like that but he does have a message in his music and it’s not the typical smoke weed, fucc hoes, eat puzzy, throw money, buy cars, shoot guns, fucc more hoes, shoot a nigga for nothing, spend money on name brand clothes, shoot more niggas, go to da club, count the rooms in my imaginary house, sell dope, oh yeah, shoot more niggas and go to jail. I think that sums up every rap song this year. I wouldn’t mind if Kendrick or Macklemore won, but if you gon hate on Macklemore becuz he’s white and doesn’t talk about the brainwashing bullshit that’s in every song, you sir or ma’am are not a fan of hip hop. You are a fan of the lifestyle that they are falsely presenting. Ya bish.

    • atlantahiphopshop

stupid ass comment is totally off mark. so people have to like it or else they dont know hip hop? GTFOH DAWG! people don’t hate him because he is white BUT they know he is so successful because he is white. sh!t Mcklemore even knows that.

      • i’mreloaded!

If you were listenin, HE said that the hip hop community would be upset if HE won. Why else would he say that? So YOU GTFOH DAWG! If you don’t like my opinion or what I said PAY IT NO MIND then. Thank you.

      • i’mreloaded!

I neva said you had to like chit. I just said I myself haven’t heard anything from the guy. But the cliché rap songs that have been comin out don’t usually win Grammy awards unless the artist is nationally known like a Jay, Drake or someone like that. I never once said that you don’t know rap if you don’t like Macklemore. That was YOUR statement sir.

      • P€OpLé hAte Me

True and he supports gays and they support him.why do you think drake and eminem are so successful because they are white and white people are the one’s buying most of the album’s like it or not, and there going to support there kind drake’s my dude but he is half white so that equals bigger fan base like it or not.

My favorite part of this comment was the break down of the not the typical. I don’t care for McLemore just not my era. People that love him. Love him cause of his Good Will store shopping, gay love song making, and pay homage. I feel you dawg on your comment. I said that a long time ago. Everybody knocked me. All that never gone happen never been done movie script stuff is why McLemore is popular. Is why a lot of White rappers is popular. Cause they just spitting relevant stuff. Nobody buying these rappers no more. Prodigy whole album every time he spit I just kept thinking back to the Book beef and how none of that stuff he was spitting was real. Lot of the big songs of the year were ANTI-HIPHOP Misogony, MATERIALISM, AND VIOLENCE. You guys can keep sleeping but the message is ringing true. LODRE got famous basically dissing hiphop. Nobody caught it. Keep sleeping and acting like what my man saying up here ain’t really whats going on but that is the reality of music today. That’s why these hiphop acts can’t get off the ground. Sucking for beats. Begging Def Jam. Crying about Def Jam and everythings changed. Having to drop MixTapes. Its cause the machine has burnt people out on the cookie cutter. ANYTIME GANGSTA GIBBS AIN’T SIGNED YOU GOT A PROBLEM. SERIOUS PROBLEM. Can you imagine Gibbs 10 years ago with his music and buzz and story line not getting a Jeezy Deal. NOPE. Alot of your biggest hiphop acts can’t get radio spins. CAUSE NOBODY WANT TO HEAR IT OUTSIDE A SMALL SEGMENT OF HIPHOP HEADS.

    • P€OpLé hAte Me

true i wouldn’t say mack shouldn’t win because he is white but his message is lame it is different tho and i bet you can relate to it some way also but it’s just corny to be under the genre rap-hiphop seriously, even eminem has rap tracks
then he has that corny side for the true white america examples..guess who’s back,hi my name is.drake has already changed the game in some what of a way same with eminem…e-40 i think it was him saying there planning to take hiphop-rap away from blacks he could be right even tho that’s not what it should be about but if mack does win well not even that, him just being nominated is showing that now in todays hiphop world any one can do it cause he does rap about his life im not a fan of his music but he does talk about his life the game has changed.

    • ItGoesDownINtheDM

      lol good 1

    • GSEVEN

Actually he is a pure lyricist, I think you need to do your home work. the kids been putting in super dope lyrics since he was 14…. Heist is commercial, he done strait strait HipHop…go do altitude re search and come back with that comment.

  • i’mreloaded!

Let’s get my statement clear. Everyone here knows the Grammy Awards are somewhat culturally biased which means Macklemore has a good chance of beating Kendrick. Kendrick has a better album but Macklemore is more commercially accepted right now than Kendrick(not by much though). If Kendrick doesn’t win, a lot of people will say the decision was made on color, and it will probably be people who haven’t heard Macklemore’s album. And in all probability, the people who voted for Macklemore haven’t heard anything from Kendrick’s album besides what were singles.

    • stackzscrilla

Corny… But even based on those Singles, Kendrick straight RIP Macklemore.

      • i’mreloaded!

        I can agree wit dat.

      • P€OpLé hAte Me

your right i have heard Kendrick and i heard Macklemore this guy he is somewhat lyrical in his own way but he just make’s music whites can relate to and it’s lame in my opinion like sthe song about shoe’s but this is a huge wake up call for hiphop/rap if guy’s like macklemore are getting nominated for Grammy’s what is the state of hiphop/rap man.

    • P€OpLé hAte Me

Yea man that’s true very true it’s a fucked up world for us here were so talented and they don’t like it, if they have an opportunity to take our shine away best believe they will do it just like day to day life especially for a black man,the statement you just made shows the concealment of racism in America/the world….Obama or no Obama that will never die.

    • P€OpLé hAte Me

Kendrick just never got that huge mainstream pop hit, people are buying GKMC because of who Kendrick is, and ‘what Kendrick means to hip-hop’, not because of a hit single. Macklemore has 2 or 3 mainstream pop singles, but people are buying Heist because Youtube, not because of ‘what Macklemore means to hip-hop’. So it’s apples and oranges. They shouldn’t be in the same category. It’s like putting Rage Against The Machine and Marvin Gaye against each other for ‘Best Album’.

thats real spill right there homie. well put.

Yes, you are right. The evil that has been perpetuated in movies, television and other forms of music as seeped its way into the underbelly of hip hop. So… now what? You’ll continue to listen.

You’re right… Crowley is not hip hop. I applaud you for recognizing who he is and the devilish deeds he carried out. His teachings, however, continue to be respected today by the people who entertain you. I believe it was the great poet Dwight Grant who said, “Get down or lay down.”

      • William Witherz

Well you know a lot about Crowley, so you should also know that those who respect him are in powerful positions in the music industry. Those in such positions are most likely responsible for a good portion of the entertainment that you absorb, unless you only listen to rappers who have never been signed to a major label. If that is the case, I again applaud you. 85% of the music lovers will unwittingly support his teachings, however.

      • 84stickupkid

And what do you think of the 85 percent unwittingly supporting his teachings…

      • William Witherz

What is there to think? On one hand I think the same way that I think about most of the people who watch reality tv shows all day whilst real sh!t is going down including but not limited to: NSA spying on US citizens, the war in Afghanistan continuing as a front for seizure of poppy fields to increase CIA involvement in the heroin trade, the ongoing left/right conservative/liberal Republicratic mire that continues to play itself out in the media causing Americans to believe they only have two choices… in a nutshell on one hand I think there is no hope.

On the other hand, I think maybe there is a shot at waking people up.

I wish I could say I felt a certain way at all times… but unfortunately I am more complex than that and have different feelings about subjects depending on when you ask me.

Well I never said I was down with him. I’ve been coming to AHH for years and just decided to pick a polarizing figure such as him for my new avi so that I could spark and engage in discussions like this. Honestly I wouldn’t have known his face instantly as you did, although I have done my research on him.
I confess that I only picked this avi for the same reasons Eminem rapped about killing his mom and baby mom, the same reason Brotha Lynch Hung rapped about frying baby testicles and the same reason 50 Cent went to DJ Khaled’s mom’s job: for shock value.

    • ItGoesDownINtheDM

yeah but look @ cube today hes more vanilla ice than what vanilla ice was lol

      • stackzscrilla

No disrespect but Cube might very well be CB4. I might catch some flack for that but how do you go from NWA to staring in Cop/Bounty Hunter roles in Mainstream Movies? #FoodForThought.

      • ursocalledgod

do your homework on the homie Cube. he said it a few times in his lyrics. he will forever be gangsta rap as far as his movies go he know where the getting is good at. its called versastility homie. none of his shit is radio friendly or mainstream. from day one he still spits that raw when it comes to his music.

      • stackzscrilla

Like I mentioned before. No disrespect to Cube. Trust and Believe i understand crossing over to get that bread the Long Way. When was the last time he spit that raw though?

      • ursocalledgod

You didn’t peep that Raw footage album? Homie had some dope on there for real.

      • stackzscrilla

Naw, But good lookin’ out though! I will peep that joint and see what it do.

      • William Witherz

Yes, please check every album he has put out… I actually liked Laugh Now, Cry Later more than Raw Footage… but why speak on his music not being ‘raw’ if you haven’t actually listened? I think War & Peace may have been his worst album(s)… but when he went back independent, he was again spitting that undeniable, political, supreme gangster sh!t.

    should be:
    Skyzoo: A dream deferred
Kendrick Lamaar: Good Kid, Maad City
    J Cole: Born Sinner
    Earl Sweatshirt: Doris
    Chance the rapper: Acid Rap

    • John Q. Public

Doris had way too many features, was a letdown for me. Earls dope tho

  • JerZeBoy

Kdots album is dope and so is Mac’s – Kdots is a bit more lyrical, but Macs got a bunch of different songs painting different pictures/scenarios. Some will hate Macs just cause he is white, and others will hate Kdots just cause he is black. Truth is the Truth

    • stackzscrilla

  • you damn right…but macklemore is just positioning right now cuz if he didn’t want that award he wouldn’t have a double sided front page ad in the recent grammy voting members billboard magazine issue that i just got in the mail

  • I don’t like this white rapper, but he is right, lamar should win, whites want hip hop so much, eminem is cool, but being used with “rap god” tee shirts, to once again label a white person in another black created genre as the king of god of the genre, whites are, or generally cold blooded vicious race of people, if you call country black singer king of country, whites would have a fit
