Mark Cuban Apologizes To Trayvon Martin Family For "Black Kid In A Hoodie" Comments

(AllHipHop News) Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban created a stir this week with comments he made during an interview with Inc. In the aftermath of the Donald Sterling controversy, Cuban addressed the issue of race and bigotry in the video Q&A. He suggested everyone prejudges others, including himself.

“If I see a black kid in a hoodie and it’s late at night, I’m walking to the other side of the street,” said Cuban. “And if on that side of the street, there’s a guy that has tattoos all over his face – white guy, bald head, tattoos everywhere – I’m walking back to the other side of the street.”

While some praised the Shark Tank star for openly admitting his own prejudices, the statement also drew criticism for what was seen as an unbalanced equivalency of being fearful of an African American child wearing an article of clothing as compared to a white man with face tattoos.

The comments also upset others, because it seemed to reference the sensitive subject of the tragic killing of Trayvon Martin. Cuban took to Twitter to apologize to Martin’s family, but stood by the rest of his statements.

I have mixed feelings about this fiasco.

    • Live Well

Mission accomplished. Cuban’s whole purpose was to conflate the issues so people feel conflicted. Remember, he’s got skin in this game.

  • Sean Taylor

Well time for the NBA to fine Cuban and make him sell the Mavericks.

And why did he feel the need to apologize to the Martin family…Trayvon wasn’t the first person to wear or get killed in a hoodie.

    • trapzilla

Fine him for what, cuz he spoke the truth? And he did apologize but he still stood on his statements and he also said something about whites too.

      • Live Well

That wasn’t the truth, those were his feelings and opinions.

      • trapzilla

What I meant by that was we as human beings, no matter the color of our skin all have stereotypes about other races. Hell us black’s have stereotypes about our own damn race. Now am i lying?

      • Brooklyn Stoop

black people dont have stereotypes about our own race, we share the same stereotypes whites have about our race and think us believing the stereotypes about our race makes us “honest” about our race. its called a trick

      • Phatt Killah

Smart! Divide and Conquer. And Americans(blacks) feed into it.

      • Live Well

No, you’re not lying. In a vacuum, Cuban’s statement is truthful but in the broader discussion he’s conflating all the issues. He was using criminal profiling as a way to make us all look like hypocrites for objecting to Sterlings slave master mentality. He made two entirely different issues into one. Let’s not forget how this whole “honest” reflection came to be. He was asked about Sterling and decided to change the focus and accuse everyone of having glass house syndrome. It’s a slap in the face.

      • Troll_E_G

U are brainwashed by media if u believe in stereotypes….smh.

I’m with it 100%…I’ve been hearing/reading/watching people, (black, white, etc) talk about how we try to brush this under the rug and that we need to come out and be honest with each other. WELL HERE IT IS! (Clap, Clap,Clap) I salute this man and i think that there will be other people who are HONEST about this subject. Only through honesty, patience, and understanding will we be able to put a huge dent in ingnorance, racism, bigotry and prejiduce. SALUTE! I’ll be #2
    1. I saw this guy in a turban getting on a plane to ATL and I immediately though, “Man I hope they scan this ninja!”…Talked to him on the plane as was cool as hell. He watches old school Martial arts movies like i do (venoms cast, gordon lui, etc). And he didn’t blow the plane up lol
    2. I used to work with this white guy with a bald head and a long goatee. Where i’m from, SC, that means run or protect your neck. Come to find out this cat is cooler than a fan. We use to talk sh*t about people daily
    3. If i bought an oldschool martial arts movie, and saw ANYBODY other than an Asian in it, there was no way that i’d buy that. I bought a movie called Marco Pollo and it was dope as hell.
I can’t really think of anymore. I’m a pretty open minded person and accept people as they come. I think the media/devil uses this to thier/his advantage to divide us then conquer us. Mark Cuban, I think, has possibly started a revolution to battle the evil minds of the higher ups. Please reply and tell me what you think.

    • Brooklyn Stoop

what did you think about lord jamar comment on homosexuality and whites being guest in hip hop?

      • Phatt Killah

Well he was false on that one. Blacks, puerto ricans, and whites all started it. Blacks and Puerto Ricans with the graffitti, bboy(ing), and rap and Whites with bringing it into the mainstream for everybody to be a part of and enjoy (embrace) Blonde (white) along with Fab Five Freddy had the first rap video. Gays have been around since the early 80’s in hip hop. If i’m not mistaken they were called Botty Boys. So they are definitely not guests. If you think of what rap is it’s poetry to a beat. they’re old folk songs that did that. Rudy Ray more used to do that honestly. I don’t really agree with being gay but that’s on them. I also don’t agree with how these minorities have been b-boying for years but as soon as whites get a serious hold on it, they performing for the queen of england lmao!! such is life though. We’re all one in the same. F*ck it.

      • Troll_E_G

        Whites didn’t create shh

      • Phatt Killah

yeah but honestly Hiphop is a borrowed art form. Where do yo u think pop-locking came from” Mimes, that kid and play kickstep was introduced by fred astaire(sp) and like i said poetry to a beat was folk songs back in the day. I could go on. Now the mixing and shit like that is all Jamaicans/American Blacks(I refuse to use African American)/Hispanics. It’s like gumbo. You put a lot of stuff in it to make that delicacy.

      • Troll_E_G

Hip hop and music in genral came form Africa and it was all borrowed from thr original brothers and sisters….folk songs came from blacks as well, the banjo was brought here on the slave ship called Jesus…..but the question i have for u is y do u refuse to call blacks Afican americans

    • Realist4200

Thank you for speaking sense among the cesspool of paranoia and stupidity.

    • Troll_E_G

Your comment just shows U have racism n pre judging in your heart…nothing more or less….I never think like that

      • Phatt Killah

No racism, prejidice. If i was a racist, then i wouldn’t have a white father in law, a white brother, Korean neighbors who’ve been to my house and are more than welcome to come back. i got all kinds of friends and smashed all types of chicks. As far as the prejiduces, i was just being honest. And those were ones that i USED to have. If you read the entire comment you’ll see that prejiduce that i had and what made me change my mind.

      • Troll_E_G

U were and possibly still are brainwashed by media…funny how bigots have all these views on blacks, ricans etc yet be on everything involving us ….if u feel a certain way about someone…y philander with them

    • Live Well

Cuban has changed the entire issue with this, “we all have prejudices” crap. Yes we do but in the context of Donald Sterling, this is nothing more than a tactic to muddy the waters to protect the “higher ups”. What Cuban is doing has nothing to do with a revolution against discrimination or bigotry and more to do with protecting the NBA owners against personal world views being a used against them to threaten their franchise ownership.

  • Live Well

Mark Cuban thinks people are stupid in general, and he’s probably right. To say he never thought about Trayvon Martin when he used that example is an insult to the public’s intelligence. And to equate the fear of being a crime victim with the slave master complex that Sterling has is a slap in the face. Cuban is a very calculated businessperson with a lot at stake here and this was nothing more than a way to try to lump racism and out of context prejudice all under one umbrella to make us all feel like hypocrites for crucifying Sterling. The real question is why?

    • Troll_E_G

To keep the system going, that’s y… Whites deflect and sway attention and this is no different…u seem intelligent from your comment so its hard to believe u don’t know y

      • Live Well

You’re right and I do know why, bro. I was just asking a rhetorical question really. It seems like Cuban has successfully changed the discussion to something that isn’t the issue. Deflecting like you said.

      • Troll_E_G

White controlled media is helping sterling

      • Realist4200

i like how we vilify the ones who are so called anit semetic, homophobic, or cruel to animals but we intellectualize when someone say disparaging remarks about black people.
why “we all are prejudice or a bigot in some way or form” is NEVER applied when someone is anti gay or jew’ish?
why “we all killed a animal in some shape or form” isnt used when Vick was accused of dog fighting.

I don’t see it as Tom’s. Firstly, Uncle Tom’s cabin was an Anti-Slavery novel and was a best seller in it’s time. I forget the time frame. It helped the civil war come into fruition as well. Just because someone doesn’t agree with all other black he shouldn’t be labeled if he’s spittin right and wrong. I do agree with you about the double standard. just last night i was asking my girl. If a retared person laughed at me, shouldn ‘t i be able to laugh at his ass back?? If we treating everybody the same, I’m firin his ass up eff that lmao!! I agree with what mark cuban says though. i just think that people that don’t agree with him are either ignorant(not in a bad way..you just don’t know or keep your ear to the ground) or just lying to themselves which is a battle i”ve waged against myself in my teens and came out victorious. Racist are just people that are insecure and fearful ….y is a grown man hollering he will cross the street if he sees a black kid with a hoodie when it was politicians, cops,n bigots in white hoods killing n terrorizing….anyone agreeing with him is a victim of brainwashing and a vagina ….blacks cause each other due to aftermath of slavery…its misguided anger and that’s whats scares white folks….the thought of one-day blacks destroying them plagues there mind so they keep this rawkus up

    • Realist4200

You said “Racist(s) are just people that are insecure and fearful.”

Then go on to say “One day blacks will destroy whites”

Why are you so insecure and fearful? Have you tried counseling? Or maybe writing your feelings down in poetry?

      • Troll_E_G

U surely didnt comprehend my comment if thats all u took from it….whites are scared blacks will destroy them one day physically, economically and mentality so they have to keep my people down in many ways ……if u seen American Gangsta, it was a scene when Crow told Denzel he represents progress for blacks and thats why he must be locked up so things can go back to “Normal”

      • Realist4200

Oh, so American Gangster is prophetic? Do you substantiate all of your stances with Hollywood quotes?

      • Troll_E_G

  • soyhiphop

This is ridiculous I mean come on! I guess every one is a saint people love pointing fingers but they’re just as racist or prejudice as these two..every body a bit prejudice so ok if you see a bunch of chief keefs infront of your local bank and need quick cash out the atm..but across the street there’s a 7 11 with some square looking dudes in front of it..you perfect n not prejudice right? Lol you gonna go to the chief keefs side and get robbed ..wake up

    • Phatt Killah

HHAAHAHAHAHAHAHA this is the honesty i’m talkin bout. Get this sh*t out in the open. WHo’s # 3. list your prejiduces

      • Brooklyn Stoop

so honestly you think blacks…………i mean “cheif keef” at a bank are more of a threat then the suits that robs us every sec of the day?

was the italian, jewi’ish, irish, russian mob less “threatening”

like i said in a early post
black stereotypes of black people come from white stereotypes of black people

      • Phatt Killah

Oh Hell naw!!!! but the top execs/big banks are the ones who run the country. They put out rhetoric to divide us and to keep our minds on each other so that we won’t pay attention to what they’re doing. we can definitely agree on that righ kila?

      • Brooklyn Stoop

so then why play into the white stereotypes of black youth, if you know the biggest thieves wear suits not saggin pants

      • Brooklyn Stoop

the reason why the black youth are vilified in the media and disenfranchised is because the black youth starts revolution. it was the black youth who created the music in this country, style and dances, and it was the black youth that started the civil rights movement as well as the Black Panther Party For Self Defense

      • soyhiphop

You stoopid..lol so i should be concerned with the suits that robb me on some corporate shit more than the goons who could possibly kill me? Italian irish mobs had morals yes..they whent after other mobsters probably a little extortion here and there..these young n!ggas have no morals no ethics they will robb your granny you seen it before you will see it again kids hit by strays old folks robbed n assaulted..so should I really fear the suits my brother!

      • Brooklyn Stoop

“talian irish mobs had morals yes..they whent after other mobsters probably a little extortion here and there..these young n!ggas have no morals no ethics”

        MORALS?????

your right, what am i thinking. your right, we should fear our own unmoral youth cause other races of thugs have MORALS when they exploit us.
if only our thugs had moral…………..smh

      • soyhiphop

They don’t….in puerto rico in the housing projects this is also practiced in brazils favela slums and jamaica..if gangsters set up shop in the hood there cant be no crime other thsn selling drugs in the hood..no purse snatching no robbing old ladies no child abuse or molestation..morals street ethics..you break them rules they gonna find your body bound and gagged with 77 shots..niccas here tho? No morals no ethics they robb old folks commit random crime on innocent people 24 7 and than tell u stop snitching..unorganized and uncivilized blacks and latinos in the u.s make it hard for your moms to go to the grocery store..

      • Brooklyn Stoop

“.if gangsters set up shop im the hood there cant be no crime other thsn selling drugs in the hood..no purse snatching no robbing old ladies no child abuse or molestation”

so there IS crime. which means the cops will pursue these gangsters correct? they are allowed to sell drugs right, and who are they selling drugs too? the persons in they community or no one in the community is allowed to take that poison either? drug addiction causes robbing old ladies and purse snatching. drug addict parents causes molestation and child abuse/neglict as well as purse snatching. but hey, maybe that ish only happen to drug addicts in america.

in america it used to be like that too. drug dealers would show respect to the elders………..did you forget bout that? they did have street codes of ethics………did you forget that?

the difference between america and other countries
america have a thriving slave indust……….opps my bad PRISON industrial system that feeds off the chaos that your calling immoral

      • soyhiphop

Ok you talking bout some 1970s frank lucas shit that whent down the drain with the reagan crack infested 80s..this chaos and prison business means nada nobody forces a gun on your hand we have freedom of will….nobody forces hood chicks to have 5 to 6 kids on section eight..all these thugs are a product of broken homes and absent father’s oh wait you gonna blame whitey for that too? That excused is played out we as a people need to do better..stop kids from being influenced by these hood rappers and big time drug dealers..last time I check it was blacks who glorified these detrimental things..its 2014 not 1914..your worst enemy in real terms is a hotheaded n!ggaa with nothing to do..godforbid and I wish you long life but if you get merked it will most likely be by a heartless man of color and not them thieves in suits you speak of

      • Brooklyn Stoop

I was actually explaining how we got to this state. but now all of a sudden the past or how we got here isnt important. no doubt

so your telling me in 2014 in brazil gangsters run the favelas and keep crime low…….same as jamaica and PR. there is NO immoral crimes going on in 2014 jamaica, PR or Brazil in areas controlled by their moral gangstas? your speaking CURRENTLY correct?

      • soyhiphop

There’s inmoral crime everywhere..but in those hoods you can’t commit them in their neighborhood..they pay folks rent pay for school supplies feed kids im not exagerating..and yes these guys are evil and far from saints but they do this so the community has their backs its all game.. christopher coke leader of jamaicas shower posee was defended by his whole hood when the fbi try to apprehend him they died for him cause he did more for them than the goverment..long story short blacks n latinos in the states terrorize their neigborhoods and have people feeling like hostages in they own neighborhood

      • Brooklyn Stoop

Dudus shipped drugs to who? and where? and when it goes to who and where it goes into neighborhoods that do not have the same (for lack of a better word) police crack down presence as america. so in jamaica dudus money can create the atmosphere to where he can do that. the same thing cant happen here cause the chaos is food for the prison system. america locks up more of its citizens then ANY country in the world. and you didnt say it was a game, you said it was MORALS and you justified they wicked acts by saying they are MORAL and condemned the wicked acts of black americans for NOT being MORAL. now your saying they ARE evil and ARE NOT saints.

in Brazil the police is busting up the gangs in the Favelas? why? because the crime rate dropped? and dont say cause of the Olympics cause imma say so the only time they bust up the gangs in these hoods was cause of the Olympics.

it just seem to me you have a white person view of your own people. as for the part about the hot headed naga killing me……….nah…….with my views and the way i talk to brothers in these streets where ever i go……….im more then likely gonna get killed by someone in a suit. and i be around some looney tunes……….but knowledge of self is clean water to a thirsty man, and from my experience when the topic is NOT about black issues arguments come in to play. but when these same lonney ass knee grows hear me talk about black power knowledge and overstanding…..we all end up building. and thats my experience

Blacks and people of color can

Dog, that was the FIRST thing that came to my mind when I heard those examples. And for the record, that hoodie reference was calculated too. His apology is BS.

One thing I got from Cuban’s example was that he thought George Zimmerman was right to be afraid of Trayvon Martin. Maybe he should have “crossed the street” instead of pursuing him with a pistol but it was normal to think he was a criminal. I’d guess Cuban didn’t think Zimmerman was a racist either, just stupid for not walking away. Phukkk Mark Cuban.

black people stereotypes of black people are white people stereotypes of black people. so black americans outlook on other black people is based on white racist views. which is why we call our self neggers. and when you use the word to “take the power away” your repeating something jim jones the cult leader said. you dont want to call your self black………….now you say we are brown, why? because webster dictionary defined the color. some of us look away from africa because of white views of africa and i can go on and on. black americans are white americans with darker skin. People keep saying black people are sensitive or whatever and Cubans comments wasn’t serious it was the truth. What truth is cuban saying? I wore a hoodie yesterday I didn’t think I was gangsta or invisible it was chilly out sh!t. Black people are hardly even talking about this go on yahoo cnn etc all you going to see is white people commenting on how sensitive blacks are when blacks haven’t said nothing. Many people feel the way Cuban does so why is everyone ignoring that there’s a REASON for this kind of profiling? It it right, no….but is it justified, yes. I’m black and live in the hood and it’s a well known fact that hoodies worn at night (no disrespect to trayvon) alerts to POSSIBLE crime potential. I’m black and live in the black community and that’s standard criminal attire worn to conceal identity as much as possible. That’s no secret. Same thing with his other example of the white guy….the tattoos and bald head looks menacing to some people and MAY make them think of a hate group or something. No matter what example Cuban used for the black guy, blacks would’ve had a prob with it. Cuban is not wrong for being honest and expressing the thoughts of MANY others (all races included) who feel this way. If we as black people want to be looked at differently, then stop doing the dumb shit that puts us in this stereotypical view. I saw Stephen a smith on FT this morning and he hit the nail rt on the head about the whole situation. People so simple minded and get caught up on the race card and fail to see the big picture.

    • Troll_E_G

He spoke at Harvard last year and the topic came up. he said as a black man walking around New York at night people treated him different then during the day. But he also says when he walked around at night he would be more relieved to walk by 2 white dudes then black dudes in hoodies.

    What Cuban said wasn’t racist.
And shouldn’t he need to apologize to bald white people as well to be completely fair.

      “Hyper-sensitive people”

let me ask you this, cause your on allhiphop a lot.

you do remember the macklemore situation right? he had a wig, a witch nose (according to him) and was called anti semetic and never said anything anti-jew’ish……….never done anything anti-semetic. but he caught flack, apologized AND the ADL got in contact with him as well as Kanye for saying we dont have the connects like the jew’ish people. i didnt see anyone commenting about how hyper sensitive they are…….but when black people feel offended then we over sensitive and need a thick skin. FOH

      • John Q. Public

are u askin my opinion or askin why nobody said “they” were being oversensitive?…

More people hate Black people than Jews and that’s why in a debate like this black people will always have more haters. especially over the internet when people feel anonymous.

        …did that make sense?

      • Brooklyn Stoop

it make sense. i just hate that………….aight, check it. i feel like black people are fair to a fault.
we will say macklemore is wrong for dressing like a stereotypical jew’ish person in one breath then defend someone anti black views (for lack of a better word). and that bugs me out. we should be upset with mark cubans comment just like jew’ish people was upset with macklemore costume

and what happen was i lost my train of thought lol. but i was basically asking you to compare the comments when macklemore offended the jew’ish people vs the comments when mark cuban made his comments.

cause like i said, it trips me out that black people speak out against wrong against others and when we are wronged then we wanna play semantics

      • John Q. Public

I wouldn’t say (all) black people are fair to a fault. On this website alone I see a lot of comments from black people with anti-jewish views on some Farrakhan Nation of Islam type stuff. There are racisits in every color.

And Macklemore, I just don’t get what the hell he was dressed up for in the 1st place, on some Rap Game Lady Gaga ish.

      • KOOL KING K

So what you saying….that the NAACP needs to get involved or sumn?

      • Brooklyn Stoop

im saying the ADL got involved about macklemore costume and other jew’ish people got at macklemore via twitter. black people are attacking each other and rather us shut up and get over the comment then take a stance FOR the race like everyone else do.

      • KOOL KING K

The situations are different. Something comparable to what Macklemore did would be if a rapper from another race came out with props like a afro wig on with a pick in it and fake gold teeth etc. that’s something to be outraged about the same way the Jews were. Petty shit like a hoodie pales in comparison.

      • Brooklyn Stoop

” Petty shit like a hoodie pales in comparison.”

well get to this statement in a minute.

“Something comparable to what Macklemore did would be if a rapper from another race came out with props like a afro wig on with a pick in it and fake gold teeth etc.”

the wig macklemore had on was not distinctive to jew’ish people, the ONLY reason why your comparing that wig to a afro is becuase the jew’ish people got hot and your trying to explain it if it was another race (even though macklemore and the jew’ish people are the same race)……..but what you fail to realize is the wig was no way “jew’ish” or can single out a group or a race like a afro or dread locks. a pick? there was no jew curl in the wig. fake gold teeth? there was no hasidic jew hat or yamica on the costume. your trying to compare a PERCEIVED stereotype (a white guy in a black wig with a big nose) with a real stereotype (a white guy with a afro with a pick and gold teeth).

        now to this

” that’s something to be outraged about the same way the Jews were. Petty shit like a hoodie pales in comparison.”

when was the last time a jew’ish person was killed cause of a perceived stereotype like a wig or a big nose? and when was the last time a black person was killed cause of a stereotype of us in a hoodie? so the hoodie thing is petty or pales in any comparison when death comes from that perception

J Cole is a weak dude for saying that.

      • hell yeah!
        Str8 Pussified!

The ill ‘chet is though, take J Cole & put him out in some suburbabian area, everyone making 1mil + a year, where he’s the only Black face….late at night, with every Chuck in sight, legally strapped, and has no clue who he is, not only would he be scared ‘chetless, them 2 Black hoodied faces would send such a sigh of relief through him, he would have an orgasm.

      • Live Well

Without a doubt. That’s the biggest disgrace of this whole attempt to talk about racism as if it swings equally. Black folks in this country are the ones who have a history of being victimized by white males with guns, not the other way around. The kid in the hoodie should be afraid of Mark Cuban walking down the street at night.

      • Ninjaz is!

Automaticlly, they stay out of all white hoodz & get scared to find themselves alone and unarmed in one. The “better / whiter” the area….the scarier it is.

$tr8 off the muscle you know you getting stopped by the cops…..and that alone could be fatal!

      • Live Well

That’s right. Black folks who live in poor black neighborhoods are more scared of the cops than they are each other.
