Radio Stations Were Required To Play Iggy Azalea & Other Artists' Songs At Least 150 Times

(AllHipHop News) “Fancy” by Iggy Azalea is the biggest hit of the summer. The song has dominated Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, and it broke the record for the longest running Number 1 single by a female rap artist. According to a report by the Washington Post, “Fancy” got a some help from the largest radio outlet in America.

Clear Channel started a program called “On The Verge.” The initiative was designed to help rising acts get more exposure on their 840 stations. Program directors from across the country vote on a song and the winning tune is committed to get at least 150 spins on all the stations for about six weeks.

Azalea was selected as an “On The Verge” artist, and her chart smashing single benefited from access to Clear Channel’s 245 million monthly listeners via radio and its iHeartRadio streaming app.

“On The Verge” does not guarantee an artist will have the level of success of Azalea, but it does give the chosen singles a huge push out the gate. Other songs selected for the program include Tinashe’s “2 On,” Jhené Aiko’s  “The Worst,” and Anthony Lewis’ “Candy Rain.”

“I think it’s good for everybody when we can break more artists,” said Clear Channel Radio’s president for national programming platforms Tom Poleman. “The listeners win; we win as a company that relies on music as our lifeblood; and our artists certainly win as well.”

Poleman added “On The Verge” is not meant to give certain artists or labels an unfair advantage. He insists the acts picked to participate are based completely on the quality of the music and not on label pressure.

New York City’s Power 105.1 and Hot 97.1, Miami’s 103.5 The Beat, Los Angeles’ Power 106, and Atlanta’s Kiss 104.1 are some of the stations available through iHeartRadio.

Illuminati in full effect here. That’s how they brainwash you into believing that song is really hot?

    • Carlos

exactly, i personally don’t like the song but its playing in my head right now as i write this, Not because its a dope song, but because every where i go they play that sheet.

    • B.U.

That ain’t Illuminati, that’s just good old fashioned corporate payola.

  • No….after reading the article, I totally support it…They are supporting new artists by forcing radio stations to play there songs not because of the name but because of rewarding an artist on the come up…This is great because fans are tired of the same old Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Drake, Jay-Z, Kanye, Beyonce, and Rihanna. It’s like a contest for Indie artists and if they meet a certain standard then the prize is guaranteed spins on the radio. Great formula, I like it.

      SMH………….

    • Carlos

the problem i see with this is that none of the artists mentioned in the article that were picked for this are indie. I bet if we do the research, all of them, iggy, Jhene, etc, are signed to majors. It seems to me that they have created a loop hole for that payola.

      lol

  • Twonpass

    Pure bullshit…………..
    Watch the trend..
and in today’s view hot = terrible rambling repetitive content, no originailty

LMAO!!!!!Classic! Downloading data into the human hard drive? Programmed by a Board of Program Directors? Through radio waves and into your earhole? Constant commercials (songs) over and over? The last 10% of brain matter that can filter b.s. is numb from repetition. This is art? This isn’t even business. This is dangerous really!

In essence this Poleman guy is saying, we pick the hits for you. This literally destroys the whole concept of women lie, men lie, numbers don’t lie. LMAOOOO!!

HE is actually bad for the artist. He is literally telling you that HE made them hot, NOT YOU! LMAO This is getting fun. Couple this with labels and artist buying their own records and they may have only really sold 100 cd’s to legitimate “fans”. Quick money has no artistic value. No publishing in the future, but the labels don’t care anymore, they want the money NOW. LMAO! #CLASSICINDUSTRYFILTH
If you look like you are selling, you get more shows, which they get a percentage of in your 360 deal. And so on and so forth, This is slavery. Whew! Classic!

  • TheAfroRican

    “On the verge” = payola

  • Markus

Iggy Azalea is not the best female hip hop artist ever. Therefore she shouldn’t be recognized as the best female hip hop artist ever. The powers that be want hip hop represented by Azalea and Macklemore and Lewis. Hip hop is dead. Real people turn the radio off.

  • Brindle

this is payola all over again, the brain washing of horrible music continues

  • B.U.

Isn’t this how all these mainstream artists get their spins? Why single her out?

  • kurt_kobane

THIS IS A NEW FORM OF PAYOLA!!!!!!!! THE MAJORS GIVE THE PD’S INCENTIVES TO VOTE FOR THEIR ARTIST!!! ITS THE SAME OL TRICK NOTICE THEY SAID PROGRAM DIRECTORS VOTE..NOT THE PEOPLE THIS IS NOTHING NEW PROGRAM DIRECTORS BEEN PICKING THE SINGLES WITH GIFTS AND ARTIST APPEARANCES AT THEIR SUMMER JAMS….I CANT BELIEVE THEY TRYNG TO PUL THIS ONE….IM A MUSIC INDUSTRY EXECUTIVE IM TELLIN U PEOPLE..DONT DRINK THE KOOL AID….ALL THESE ARTIST ARE NOT NEW AND COMING UP THEY HAVE MAJOR LABEL DEALS…..THEY ARE NOT NEW AND INDEPENDANT

    • Ipullcards

U r absolutely correct! It’s ok this too shall pass if we as hiphop work together and keep our culture safe from the vultures and opprotunists

  • atlantahiphopshop
