Study Shows Lack Of Racial and Gender Diversity Among Writers For MTV, HBO, Disney + MORE

(AllHipHop News) Men lie. Women lie. Numbers get it right more often than not. A recent study conducted by the Writer’s Guild of America, West (WGAW) reveals a huge lack of racial and gender diversity at TV stations such as MTV, HBO and many others.

WGAW is the labor union that reps US writers for TV, movies and a variety of other media lanes. For the 2011-2012 TV season, roughly 30% of the writers were women and approximately 15% of the writers were minorities.

The study broke down the racial and gender diversity among 28 television networks and revealed that BET had the best diversity with 55% of their writers being women and 95% being minorities. For MTV, 42% of their writers were women and only 22% were minorities.  HBO, Cartoon Network, Comedy Central, Starz, Fox, USA Network, Spike TV and FX had under 25% of their writers being minorities and/or women.

TV shows such as Showtime’s “Homeland”, NBC’s “The Big Bang Theory” and ABC’s “Modern Family” were nominated and/or won Emmys at the 64th annual Primetime Emmy Awards in September 2012. None of those three shows mentioned above had over 25% of their writers being minority and/or females with “Homeland” having 0% of their writers being minorities.

You get hired based on skill and ability.
AKA why the majority of football players and basketball players are black.
They’re better at it and have devoted their lives to it.
Or do you think every starting 5 should be Black, White, Hispanic, Asian, Indian to satisfy this liberal diversity agenda?
Fck outta here w/ this bull shit article.

    • i agree with you but what does the “liberal agenda” has to do with that.

    • hoeyuno

Id say good point but your a homo.

    • Chase Pryor

      Exaclty. Great commentary MarshallVick

      • ccwaterbound32

great white supremacist commentary you meant.

    • ccwaterbound32

sooooo…if talent is the key then how come the majority of programming is European themed and demeans other cultures?

  • JimJames29

Twenty percent doesn’t seem that bad imo. At the same time it seems BET clearly has a racist recruitment policy.

    • ccwaterbound32

      how?

      • JimJames29

You really think only one in twenty people who apply for a job there are white?

      • Twonpass

        say it with me
        BLACK ENTERTAINMENT TELEVISION
exactly what does a white person know about black entertainment. Just saying.

      • Embassy

I dunno maybe ask Rick Rubin or David Guetta or Eminem…

    • ladynamor

Yeah like white people are knocking down the door to work at B E T with all those black people.

      • HATER PROOF

they are! people will do anything to brake into the entertainment business!

  • Philippe Therrien

That kind of article seems to be more oriented to create racial tension, than to encourage minorities to get involved into writing…. I’ll do like this article and ask you a question: 95% OF MINORITIES at BET, is this racism against white? Or they only get the best people to do it? The line can be thin, because racism can go both ways.

    • ccwaterbound32

^^^^^^^^ take notes to the white supremacist rhetoric being spewed….

      • Philippe Therrien

The white supremacist rhetoric is to bring us to racial tension. DIVIDE & CONQUER… I don’t want to be part of the sh*t. Mankind is greater than colours, Please! Take notes 😉

      • ccwaterbound32

until the black man is respected like the white man there will always be division…

      • $36424596

Then how about the black man stop committing crimes, raping children, neglecting education and being uncivilized savages?

      • Philippe Therrien

you are going to far… the problem is not colour, it is poverty.

      • Troll_E_G

The problem is white supremacy nothing more or less.
.u just ignorant to how the world works

      • ccwaterbound32

Europeans speak as if thought patterns and cultural norms particular to Europeans, are “Universal.”

Their arrogance is world-renowned. “World History,” for example, is told from the perspective of the Europeans’ encounter with the World. How in the hell is a European more-qualified to teach on Navajo Culture, Language, or History than the Navajo himself? This is pure European Arrogance, based on their cultural narcissism.

Nature did not create the “I.Q.,” tests. Europeans did, and it’s used to measure the compatibility of a person with European Cultural Norms.

White Supremacy is ABNORMAL, but European society considers White Supremacy to be “Human Nature.” What is true holds no high value in the European mind. He is eternally aware of his abnormal state, relative to the rest of Creation, and is in a constant state of war. The European efforts to reduce the world to his level, so that he can finally feel “normal.”

His skin is incompatible with the sun, and thus the high rate of skin cancer.

His women’s narrow hips are not conducive to child birth, hence their need for drugs during the delivery process.

Their blood has a high count of White Blood Cells, hence their high rate of blood disorders.

Their intestinal lining struggles to process raw fruits and vegetables, hence their need for processed carbohydrates and animal flesh.

Their technology is inefficient in its use of energy, thus the high rate of pollution from their “inventions.”

They are unable to harmonize with energy, and thus their constant conflict with nature and people.

I could go on, but you get the point.

Truth is never the most-important component of White conversation. They only concede truth when their intent to deceive proves no-longer viable.

Do not let the European confuse you, keep your heart searching for truth. Their banal philosophies and standardized tests are no match for Truth.

        Balance is Health.

        Imbalance is Disease.

Everywhere the European is, Imbalance is his champion, and Balance is his eternal enemy.

He pushes EVERY social PATHOLOGY as if it were “normal,” but nature in EVERY way speaks otherwise (homosexuality, processed foods, sunscreen, pharmaceuticals, etc.)

      • Philippe Therrien

you sound like a black supremacist…. that is waayyyy better than a white supremacist… but I’mma call you a SUPREMERACIST

      • ccwaterbound32

there is no such thing as black supremacy the word “supreme” means no higher than… the only kind of oppression that exists in america is white supremacy…because the majority race is predominately white…

      • ccwaterbound32

a black person cannot be racist because blacks do not have institutions to ENFORCE LAWS ON WHITES blacks have no political power which is why whenever they get murdered by someone within the dominate society the taboo subject which is never discussed is white privilege and how there are special laws in place to protect those within the dominate society from those of the minority group…. your argument is completely fictitious and misleading….

the ball is in all black men & women hands. Poverty is the problem and I know it is hard to get rid of it, but it is not impossible. 1) Stop playing the victim. 2) Work hard (study or start a business) 3) become an asset to society and more specialy to your community 4) don’t vote for crooked politicians 5) Teach your kids good values 6) be a “real role model” (don’t say how, do it) 7) stay out of trouble and out of jail (if you know or think that cops or judges will act diffrent with black people, fine, be smarter than them and try to trick them into their game)

      • Philippe Therrien

We need to stop playing the race card on everything… Unless if you want to f*** the society up. Because, if I play that card I will be saying a ton of BS on the NBA, the NFL, the rap game, R&B, & the list goes on… Do you know why I won’t play that card, because I love the NBA, the NFL, music… Instead of playing the race card, I will shoot a 100000000 3pointers a day with only one objective, to make the NBA…. If I don,t make it; it’s OK… I had a plan B (i made studies)…

BULLS**T… white supremacy is the main reason why blacks can’t get ahead…. let’s see 1. blacks are PURPOSELY MADE INTO VICTIMS due to economic disadvantage, the prison industrial complex, and the FLAWED judicial system which RAILROAD black men into the prison industrial complex, the educational system which is all fucked up and creates a disconnect from the rest of society due to lack of knowledge. a f**ked up system which allows bad products and food to flow freely into our communites and give us things like i don’t know cancer diabetes, etc etc…2. we work harder then you problem is we aren’t supposed to and should not have to. 3. when you say society im more than certain your referring to the dominate white society so yeah.., 4 politicans are about money and black people unfortunately generate large amounts of it but cannot keep it within their community due to white supremacy majority of their earnings are siphoned out which causes poverty which in turn causes crime. 5, black people already do that your basically generalizing an entire group of people of not teaching their kids anything i mean if your going to talk about values then maybe you should stop allowing white kids to shoot up schools so f**king much… or fornicating with farm animals, or even go so far as fornicating with your parents and brothers and sisters….6. your kind killed most of them 7. how the f**k we’re gonna do that when people who look like you craft up “custom” made laws to put us in jail? i live in the state of Louisiana “lawmakers” made a law for sagging pants you sag your pants you go to jail…in the 1950’s black men wore their pants up and STILL GOT LYNCHED so what’s the difference? sweep in front of your door before you go speaking on mine sir.

Create racial tension? The funny thing is that out of all the comments..no one has commented on the fact that the article also talks about GENDER disparity. Everyone went straight to race…and that’s the article’s fault. The same article that laid out how women are misrepresented as well?

Just look at the show “Veep”. Female lead about a female vice president and there isnt ONE single female writer. THAT’S what this article is getting at.

  • Chase Pryor

Are humans really this stupid? First of all, the goddamn percentage of minorities are far lower to begin with so obviously it would carry over into percentages of people in companies. If it’s 25%, that’s probably about normal based on the percentage of minorities in the country to begin with, if not a higher percentage. Plus, even if that was not the case (although it is) all that would tell me is that less minorities are going to school to become writers, and even less actually continue and excel in the field. Same reason there’s not a lot of black doctors, just because this is a career that you are likely hired into your job it’s now different? Trust me, jobs like that are based on skill, if you’re a great writer no one is gonna give a shit what color you are. Writers who work for places like that are from Ivy league schools usually, people who have dedicated their young lives to intense education to get high level degrees, there’s just far less minorities doing that with their lives that is why they aren’t writing for HBO or AMC or whatever. It’s very simple.

    • ccwaterbound32

      BULLSHIT

    • John Q. Public

true. it like if black people only make up 12% of population, they cant make up 50% of the writers for a tv network (except for BET)

you know what? when I turn the TV on, I see a lot of black men and women… In every movie there is a black police chief, a black mayor, a black president and there are 98% a chances that Samuel L. Jackson is in that movie… But, I know, there is only jobs for white… All my friends who are black (africans, haitians, etc.) have parents who are working for decades, but it is probably an illusion, it can’t be real…

70 millions americans on food stamps… they are all black, because you live in Louisiana … Reading your hate, I understand that no black person has a job or a chance to live where you from. You know, if all 70 millions black persons on food stamps get together they could change the face of america, because 70 millions is approximately 20% of the USA population… Wake Up and make a black country in the middle of the USA, so you will thrive and you will not have to blame the white man… But, you know, I’m bad with stats, maybe I got it all wrong 🙂

What about the black writers who get robbed of their material. What about black people that get robbed of anything they create period. HipHop,Rock etc. What about the stereotypes being consistently portrayed by the (JEW owned) Media,Music,Movie,Sports and Fashion industries. The Jews Marched on washington for civil rights along with black folks but shitted on Black folks once they infiltrated the US gov.
Also why don’t our prominent Blacks speak out about it. hmmm.. And why is every industry that is fueled by black dollars and labor owned by a Jew? They play the White man and black man against each other and cash out from it. check out the Protocols of Zion…the Jews say this is a book of fiction and propaganda but it seems like they all follow it to the letter.

This article/study may sow racial division on its surface, but it has sparked some interesting convo so I feel like chiming in. I won’t address the guy who a) doesn’t like black people yet b) spends all day on a hip hop site, because he’s clearly losing at life, and reflects that reality publicly with his words/actions. I think the new racism is assuming entire races are racist: white people that think all black people are racist; black people that think all white people are racist. In reality, true racists are a vast minority, because most people have more pressing issues to deal with (bills, family, relationships) than the entire groups of people. But when I hear (some) white people talk about race issues, their words come from a place lacking empathy. The Phillipe guy below says, “If you don’t like where you’re living, move”; I guess he could never imagine sitting in a bank for 3 hours waiting for the mortgage officer, who sees a black face and says “I’m not dealing with him.” He says, “don’t play the victim”; what would you call Trayvon, Sean Bell, Amadou Dialu, etc? And when a black victim is automatically assumed to be ‘guilty of something’ (“lets check through Trayvon’s twitter after he’s dead”), Philippe can’t imagine being victimized by a murderer AND victimized by the media post-mortem. He says “stay out of trouble”; he can’t imagine having your car searched for hours every time he’s pulled over for speeding. He believes the media’s portrayal of food stamp statistics, when white people are the majority of food stamp users (they make up half the US population and are the majority of everything, duh). This is why it’s easy for me to approach ‘race relations’ with a level head; white people can’t possibly imagine what its like to be black in America and the s*** we have to deal with exclusively, any more than I can imagine being white in America and automatically being lumped in with racist trolls like Marshall Vick down there. It’s tough. And equality will be tough to ever fully realize; if blacks are 15% of this country’s population, equality would mean blacks would be 15% of US presidents (currently, 1 out of 44), 15% of US sports team owners (currently, 0%), 15% of Fortune 500 CEOs (currently, 0%), etc and blaming blacks for those stats is blissfully ignoring the reality of this country and its history.

In short: “Everybody wants to be black… until they have to apply for a loan.” And also, “Racism is dead? Must be nice to be able to think so…”

    • Immortal

Good Post I read farther down and saw what you’re referring to but he has a point. A lot of problems start with us and end with us. At some point we have to ensure that tomorrow is better than today (I’m talking about our kids). Are we doing that? How many of us tell our kids that Mr. Academic is better long term than Mr. Sportsplayer? This article could’ve been better by showing the majors of Blacks in college in regards to jobs and job potential. There are quite a few that folks take that just don’t pan out in real life.

      • RazaBladeKing

I disagree. I dont think that anything an “African American” does starts or ends with us, because the “African American” has always been at the mercy of the system, a system that always has and currently does treat us as 2nd class citizens. Thats not to say we dont have a responsibility to strive for better (or that the hard work towards progress hasn’t stalled out on our part over the last 2 or 3 decades of complacency), but everything we have done and will do is derivative of how the “African American”‘s story began. We wouldnt be more prone to crime if the CIA hadnt brought high powered weapons and high grade drugs into our neighborhoods in the 80s (you think anyone in Harlem or southeast DC had a Nicaraguan connect back then?) We wouldnt be more prone to poverty if white people didnt have a systematic advantage via slavery for 100 yrs. I’m sure we’d have the same traditions of valuing education, family, etc, except we didnt even have Civil Rights of a US Citizen until 50 yrs ago (one generation), allowing us to attend better schools, own property to set up households, etc. My grandfather wasnt born with the right to own a home… he literally built his own. My dad was a teenager when he got that right. Now I’ll agree to an extent, that our generation (the first black generation born with Civil Rights) haven’t done a whole hell of a lot with those rights. But that’s where it ends for me. All I was saying is, I don’t by-and-large blame today’s white people for a system created hundreds of yrs ago to give them a head start, nor do I blame them for continuing to have those advantages, and I don’t blame them for resenting the fact that we a) dislike our 2nd class citizenship and b) dislike their 1st class citizenship. I understand that they cant see the world through our eyes. I just refuse to blame “us”, either. As played out as it sounds, its “the system”‘s fault.

      • Immortal

I look at things as a country. We were brought here. We are here. Yes were held down by an oppressive society that and in some cases treats us as 2nd class. But are we not partly responsible for what is portrayed? Are we taking advantage of what others fought to give us? My parents were of the same kind as yours, but both knew education was key (we were rich by no means). Sports was secondary. I believe that if you cannot do a check up from the neck up in the mirror and ask yourself “what have you done to better yourself or your family” then you have failed. There has to be better than what we’ve allowed for ourselves, there is better than what we have, but we have to want it. I don’t expect anyone of another race to see what is going on through my eyes because they’re not walking my path nessicarily and I can’t see theirs. But I can expect those of my race to understand where they came from, where they are, and where they need to be. I’m not disagreeing with what you’re saying at all, but as a race there has to be personal accountability or we are never going to progress.

      • RazaBladeKing

Absolutely. Personal accountability is one of the main things black people as a whole (generalization) are lacking. We need to do better with what we control, but understand that we really dont control much. Said another way, riddle me this: even if this generation of black people magically started valuing education, employment, and family… do you really think that would have any effect on the racist cops, judges, employers, money lenders etc? I don’t… the empirical evidence says we’ll still be portrayed to the masses as jocks, criminals, and buffoons, cuz thats the image of black people that the system has effectively been able to portray. The system is reactive, not proactive. More to the point, do you think the powers that be would suddenly support positive music? Again, I don’t. Talib Kweli would still get one video every 3 yrs (and no platinum plaques), and they’d still push Lil Durk and French Montana, cuz thats who the empirical evidence shows will draw money. In the current climate (especially the economic one), the powers that be will “go with what works.”

      • Judah Nazayar

ALLHIPHOP.. U NEED TO HIRE THIS GUY RIGHT HERE. HEs Intelligent and is not fooled by esaus BOOLSHET..like the Nigga failures ..who eat all the boolshet the system feeds em.
        Shalawam ahki.

      • Immortal

I’ll take your riddle; could we change the attitudes and misconceptions that plague this generation due to inaction, selfishness, and overall lack of caring? NO. The damage is done, and they will reap what they’ve sown. Some will try and break out, but it’ll be a futile although valiant attempt. Do I think the mindset of others in authority will change for this generation; NO. Again when style, music, and technology gives credence to a thought faster than that thought can be properly evaluated, the task just a LOT harder. For style and music I’ll use the baggy pants thing. Serves no purpose, and in prison it’s frowned upon, unless you fit a certain type. Rappers took this to the next extreme not telling those with younger minds what it meant and now we have everyone regardless of race doing it looking stupid as hell. Do I think the powers that be will ever support positive music again? That is up to us. If the masses truly wanted it, wanted quality music over quanity those in power would have no choice but to make it. Now the flip side to that is when it was popular in the black culture alone, we supported it, but rap has moved on to “bigger and better” things into all races, and for some reason I do not think some races want to really hear about black positivity or power. Timbo said it with “see a white man scared; from a black mans power”. Problem is in using that the “white” (or other) man isn’t worried. They’ve dumbed some of us down to the point that we’ll accept anything with a big booty and a smile, or a decent beet. There’s NO WAY 90% of todays rappers would’ve made it in the golden era of Hip Hop. So until we as a mass (not a whole) reach another level of consciousness and want to reach and get better, we’re stuck where we are.

Minority writers are scarce on the networks partly because minorities are scarce on the television programs on those networks. Really the only time it seems that a minority writer’s talents would be desired is when there’s a minority character on a show that needs dialogue the show runner feels that writer can capture because they may share the same ethnicity. It usually ends up being the same stereotypical nonsense one would expect from someone who thinks they know how that person of color would act. The minority writer usually has their hands tied from voicing displeasure about the direction of that character because then their job becomes in jeopardy. It’s not fair out here in just about all facets of life.

You mustve missed that they’re the only channel with over 50% of their writers being female and/or minority. Minority isnt ONE race…it’s multiple races..hence the plural version of “minorities”.

let get break down of all minorities working at bet

Bet is a blk station owned by Jews . .seems like u just wanna bitch

The amount of stupidity is too high.

First of all, people should be judged by their skill and ability to get some work done, not by any other factor, especially not something superficial like skin color. If I want writers for a show, I wouldn’t get the satistics data from the population and be like ”Well, I definitely need 78% of white people, 13% blacks, 5% asian.. because that’s how it is in the population based on the latest statistics”. No, a business man says: ”who can write a good damn show, stand forward, the rest of you go home”.

    Ayo.

I think this isn’t as bad as it first appears.
The good news is we ARE making progress.
Considering 40 years ago this chart would have been Zero for both Blacks and Women.

AHH commenter’s need to put things in CONTEXT.
