New York Mayor Renames Bronx Street To ‘Hip Hop Boulevard’

IT ALL STARTED ON SEDGWICK AVENUE IN 1973

(AllHipHop News) Earlier this week, the birthplace of Hip Hop was officially honored by the mayor of New York City, Bill De Blasio. According to HYPETRAK, De Blasio passed a law that changed several names of streets in NYC, including the original place where DJ Kool Herc first invented the popular genre, 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx borough, in 1973. The street’s named was renamed “Hip Hop Boulevard” in honor of birth of what is now one of the most prolific music genres in the world. Herc, his sister, and Afrika Baambataa were all at the event to show love.

Mayor De Blasio also managed to diss the West Coast indirectly for during the official renaming, stating:

“If you have friends on the west coast, remember to tell them it all started here, okay?”
