The movie, which stars Denzel Washington as Harlem crime boss Frank Lucas, topped the box office upon its release in November and has grossed over $100 million dollars.

American Gangster, which was directed by Ridley Scott (nominated for Best Director), also stars a number of Hip-Hop artists, including The RZA of Wu-Tang, Common and Atlanta native, T.I.

Jay-Z’s chart topping American Gangster concept album was inspired by and released in tandem with the flick in November.

I don't know about plus 1 for black america, but it was a good movie from start to finish. Glad Denzel's follow up movie was something positive and inspirational. I'm tired of this over glorification of being a gangster. If that's what you aspire to be, grow the f@ck up, but it is what it is, a good entertaining movie...

+1 for black america...that film doesnt do anything for black america but shine sterotypes. I enjoyed the movie however, i saw the bootleg, i kept me entertained but it was a masterpiece or anything. It didnt show a wide range in emotion as far as the acting tip, but wasnt bad at all. Now he should have got a golden globe for John Q, malcom x, richochet for that matter...

I think he means plus 1 because we winning more awards. I think Denzel should have way more awards for his roles though. Inside Man was a great movie, he shoulda got something for that. Still through and through, good look for black america.

Wow J Johnson, you lost all cred when you said you caught the bootleg.  Thats what makes me sick about black folks.  We're all about supporting shit ass music, but when it comes to someone entertaining the masses with real quality entertainment(Denzel), we're quick to catch the bootleg.

Acting is tough.  Whether its a role in AG or a role in Jon Q.  Denzel is a true actor.  He researches, probably does character analysis, and really lets himself become that character which always produces a grand job.  I will say though that overall, I definitely enjoyed this film.  I'd give it an A because every actor on film did what an actors job is...

To make each other look good.

And did you REALLY just complement his performance of Remember The Titans over AG?  THAT was a good performance(Im not saying its not)..but NOT a performance im sure thats not hard to pull off.

i watched the bootleg cause i didnt want to spend my money to support frank lucas story. I also watched it in the barber shop waiting for a cut so i didnt pay for that either. Im tired of all the gangsta bio pics. I felt like "they" were forcing this american gangsta down our throats. I mean it was the show by the same name...that plays on BET, the album by the most famous rapper, and then they get the most famous black actor for american gangsta. I feel we get shoved all the negative stuff but none of the good.

American gangsta over remember the titans as an overall movie...i would pick titans.I wasnt speaking of denzell in particular, but the movie in general was pretty much the same tone. Its easy to shoot someone or play like you mad, the other films had much more meaning and depth through them. Thats just my opinion though. Where was that one emotional scene where you was just like...damn...i didnt see it. Now there were things in the movie that were like damn, but not because of the acting, but because of what happened.

I want to see hollywood push denzel new movie about having the first all black debate team win a national tournament like they did american gangsta...you can bet i pay to go see that. Has anyone even heard about this film? Its called the great debaters. I dont support "shit as music" and i dont support :shit ass movies" either...will the rest of the young community run out for this film like they did his last...probably not...will you?

WE WILL ALWAYS BE GIVEN AWARDS FOR MOVIES WHICH GIVE VIEWS OF HOW AMERICA WANTS US TO BE AND BE SEEN! REMEMBER THAT. NEGATIVE, SUPPORTING OR SUBMISSIVE ROLES.

1.HALLE WON AN OCSAR FOR LETTING A NASTY LOOKING WHITE MAN FUCK HER ON SCENE IN "MONSTER'S BALL" WHEN HER BETTER ROLES WERE "JUNGLE FEVER, BOOMERANG, STRICTLY BUSINESS, SAVING ISAIAH", ETC.

2.DENZEL WON FOR PLAYING A "BLACK" DIRTY COP, IN "TRAINING DAY" WHEN WE ARE TRULY GETTING BEATEN AND GUNNED DOWN BY BIGOTED OFFICERS WITH ITCHY TRIGGER FINGERS.

NOW THEY WANT TO REWARD DENZEL FOR PORTRAYING A MULTIMURDERING, COMMUNITY KILLING, DRUG DEALER.

NAH, I'LL PASS.

GIVE THE MAN AN OSCAR FOR MALCOLM X, REMEMBER THE TITANS, GLORY, HURRICANE, COURAGE UNDER FIRE, ETC.

THESE ARE MOVIES PORTRAYING POSITIVE BLACK HEROS. THEY NEVER GIVE AWARDS FOR THESE ROLES. WHY? HMMMMMM

WINNING AN AWARD FOR A NEGATIVE ROLE OR IMAGE, IS NEVER A PLUS IN MY OPINION.

IT'S A MINUS BECAUSE THAT IS NOT WHAT DEFENDS US AS A PEOPLE BUT IT'S WHAT THEY DEFINE US WITH.

SO WHAT'S NEXT?

PROSTITUTES TEACHING SEX ED?

PIMPS AS BIG BROTHERS?

COME ON YALL. LOL

I FEEL YOU BUT I YOU MAY NOT SEE HIS POINT. RATHER THEN TO GIVE HIS MONEY TO HELP THIS IMAGE OF US PROSPER, HE VIEWED IT ILLEGALLY BECAUSE HE STILL WANTED TO VIEW THE MOVIE. LOL

I DON'T SUPPORT BOOTLEGGING BY ANY MEANS. BUT I  THINK HIS POINT MAY BE NOT TO FINANCIALLY SUPPORT THIS IMAGE.

Ok, for the record, violence and sex sells. Wether you are a black actor or a white actor, if you do a very good job portraying a real life gangster, you are going to get praise. There isn't a company called Hollywood that says we are only going to show black people as criminals. We all make our own decisions. Nobody decides shit for us. If American Gangster makes good money at the box office, that's because alot of people made there own decision to see it. To say that america, or Hollywood is forcing us to watch movies that glorify criminals, is as stupid as blaming television for our own actions...(ei. blaming Doom for Columbine)

And saying that he is only getting praise for negative roles is a very stupid thing to say. LT Brown mentioned him not getting credit for Glory, well....do ya research, Denzel won an Oscar and a Golden Globe. He was also nominated for Oscars in The Hurricane, Malcolm X, Cry Freedom and not to mention Training Day which he won. But here's the kicker, he's won Golden Globes for Malcolm X and The Hurricane! So all the complaining about him not getting praise during his positive roles is bullshit.

Yung Chri$ said:

I co-sign with that. We shouldn't hear anything else about us as black people gettin praised for only negative roles. We got plenty of postive role awards and nominations. And don't forget we have a smaller percentage when it comes to entertainment, or well the movie industry really.
