(AllHipHop News) No looking a*s n*ggas but Nicki Minaj’s use of an iconic Malcolm X photograph has some very important people looking. Yesterday (February 14th), members of Malcolm X’s family and estate sent statements denouncing her use of the historic photo of Malcolm X looking out the window holding a gun.
Calling Nicki Minaj’s use of the photo that was featured in a 1964 issue of Ebony “disrespectful”, Malcolm X’s daughter Ilyasah Shabazz disassociated her family from Nicki’s actions. In a statement obtained by New York Daily News, Shabazz spoke on the controversy:
Ms. Minaj’s artwork for her single does not depict the truth of Malcolm X’s legacy, is completely disrespectful, and in no way is endorsed by my family.
Nicki Minaj responded to the controversy the day before Shabazz (February 13th) by removing the photo from her social media pages. She apologized to Malcolm X’s estate and then responded by addressing the hypocrisy in the treatment of the term “n*gga” in a statement on her personal Instagram account:
The word “n*gga” causes so much debate in our community while the “n*gga” behavior gets praised and worship.
