(AllHipHop News) Debut album aside, there definitely is something about Remy. During an interview conducted weeks before Remy was released from prison, the former Terror Squad 1st lady spoke on meeting Big Pun for the first time, hearing about his death and her early days in prison.
Remy Ma first appeared on a son with Big Pun on his 2000 sophomore album Yeeeah Baby for the solo track “Ms. Martin”. According to Remy in an interview with The Fader, the “Ms. Martin” verses were the first lyrics she ever rapped for Pun. Remy recalls first hearing about Pun’s passing in February 2000 on the radio and attempting to call him to prove he was alive:
I found out that Pun passed in a cab. They were saying it on the radio, and I’m sitting there, like, “Pun is gon curse them out like a dog when he hears them saying he passed.” I had just seen him, and he was fine. He was actually talking about how he lost mad weight and showing old pictures of when he was c### diesel. So I called him and didn’t get an answer. I couldn’t believe it.
Remy’s final two weeks of her prison sentence at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility for Women was in solitary confinement after she engaged in a fight with a fellow inmate. Remy admits that her first few days at the prison was filled with disciplinary infractions:
I just wanted to be by myself, but people were like, “So how is Jay-Z? What is this person like? Is it true that that person is pregnant?” I wished I could just be regular and anonymous. And of course I was getting into it with people. If only you could see my list of disciplinary infractions from those days. People try you, like, “Oh word? She’s a rapper?”
